princessllama · 15/10/2007 10:49

finally managed to wangle some time on my dad
s computer. it's horrible not having internet access. our scan went well and we think it's a boy from what we saw, but didn't ask. which would be great as dh is really desperate for one of each and i am not prepared to have a third. decided to call it ferdie if it is a boy, not sure the family will be thrilled as that's the name of my dad's cat-never mind!
dd has a snotty nose and heaps of teeth coming through so no sleep over here, a killer as i'm on the same sleep pattern as the rest of you.

Egg · 15/10/2007 10:52

Ohhhh, sorry can't remember are you likely to go into premature labour (more so than normal with twins)? Were your others early? Sorry, brain like a sieve... Hope it didn't sting too much!

All ok at midwife, no sugar in wee today, but have to have full glucose intolerance test in four weeks, which means NO FOOD FROM 10PM THE NIGHT BEFORE UNTIL AFTER TEST IS COMPLETED ABOUT MIDDAY!!!!!!!!!! How will I get through the morning?

Where is everyone today? Not chatty this morning????

Egg · 15/10/2007 10:54

Hello Princess! Didnt see your message before I posted. Great news on scan. Think Ferdie is a very cute name, better than my parents' cat's name, he is called Reg so we wont be using that one (sorry to any Reg's out there, but it is a dad / granddad name not suitable for a baby!).

Gill79 · 15/10/2007 11:26

Hi everyone - thanks for the posts about movements. Maybe it's cause I've got anterior placenta and have to be sitting still and conentrating to feel a lot of them. Was awake from 4am this morning and felt loads then so possibly it's also just active when I'm asleep.

Any other first-timers feeling completely bewildered by the whole "travel system" thing? I feel like I've never had to make a more complicated or important purchase in my life - way more difficult than a house or a car! The problem is just don't really know what priorities are - offroading, shopping bags, buses, folding up and putting in a car - I don't know what's going to be most important to me. One thing I do know is I want it to have a carry cot that faces me. And also that dp has vetoed throwing money at it in the form of a chameleon or a stokke... My cousin's offered me a complete system which is fantastic but it weighs 17kg.... I'm no weakling but I'm not that tall and can't imagine myself folding that up with one arm and chucking it in the back of the car (if it fits....) Sorry for moan everyone.... and I have looked at the reviews and end up more confused!!

Egg · 15/10/2007 11:32

Hi Gill. I remember when we were looking for a travel system for DS, we were also looking to buy our first car, and so DH was spending weeks on end researching cars while I did the same for pushchairs etc. Might be worth taking the travel system you have been offered, and see what you do and don't like about it, and then if you are not keen on it you know more what to look for without having wasted any money.

We had a Jane Slalom Pro (3 wheeler) with Matrix Pro Car Seat that lay flat and clicked into frame like a carrycot (facing me). Was fab for walking, good basket, very smooth to push etc, but was heavy and took up entire boot of our Golf. Was lovely to take sleeping DS out of car and click straight onto pram though, without waking him.

Bessie123 · 15/10/2007 11:34

Egg - I'm having a GT test next week. Apparently, they make you need to go to the loo lots and lots (number 2s) afterwards.

Gill - I am having exactly the same problem re travel systems. I had previously vetoed the bugaboo cameleon as being a huge waste of money but I had a look at one at the weekend and I think maybe we will get one now (if we can afford it). It just seems easier to pick something you know is good, even if it costs more money, rather than trying to research every little thing and then getting it wrong (that's the pressure I'm feeling, anyway).

Egg · 15/10/2007 12:04

Oh goody, can't wait for the test now !!!!

I never liked Bugaboos but my two friends who had them when DS was born have sworn by them and I must admit I did kind of regret not getting one as I like the way the seat sits so upright for when the baby gets bigger (same style as City Twin I am hoping to get as double). I ended up spending as much on my travel system anyway as the Bugaboo...

Gill79 · 15/10/2007 12:18

hmmmm....it is after all very important. Will use it every day for a couple of years at least (and then maybe again). When you look at it that way they money is not such a big deal... any other good arguments to present to dp would be gratefully receieved! It's just bad timing we are buying and furnishing our first house at the moment..

Anyway here's the link to Stokke Xplory in case anyone wants confusing a bit more. Think it is priced somewhere between the cameleon and the cheaper bugaboo.

Thanks for the tips Egg - will have a little google for those. Was originally thinking of just getting my cousin's to start with and then see how it works out - but then would innvolve a 4-hour drive and really have doubts about the car - they have a huge merc and we have a 3-door focus! At least we're not buying a car at the same time- what a nightmare that all must have been......

miniandme · 15/10/2007 12:26

Well steriods on board, second lot done tomorrow. No risk of premature delivery or previous prem deliveries,no one seems to understadn why im to have these steroids, none of the midwifes none of the consultants have heard of it either apart from my own apparently.

OP posts:
Egg · 15/10/2007 13:11

Hmmm, have seen them give steroids to mums who are in danger of prem delivery. No-one has mentioned it to me. Midwife seemed to think I would get to at least 37 weeks going on current way pregnancy is going. Who knows though, I think my biggest chance of going early is if they get too big as I am not very big myself.

Forgot to say Gill, City Twin comes in single as well (called City Elite I think)and is very like a bugaboo but cheaper (and prob not as good of course)...

Right, must get DS to bed, he is hyper...

Jo9977 · 15/10/2007 15:43

Welcome back holidayers!

Good news re scans and stuff. I've got a GT as well, thanks for the warning bout number 2's!

I'm confused about which pram/travel system to buy as well - I almost wish there wasn't any choice - and everyone has a different opinion and advice! There's so many factors involved!

What are people's thoughts on nappies? We were going to go for re-usable but are now veering towards disposable. I read an article about how society are keeping babies in nappies till 2.5, whereas it used to be 1.5 years - surely going back to that would be a much better way of educating people to be more environmentally friendly???

widgetsmummy · 15/10/2007 16:20

On the prams thing - I feel like a bad mother already as I'm considering getting a 'not true lie flat' pushchair on the basis that if I don't keep LO in it for more than 2 hours at a time its no different from a car seat...

Also - not to rant but depending on where you look at the details, the Buzz pushchair is either suitable from birth or suitable from six months! How does info like that help clueless and impressionable first time mums?

Shocked and horrified looks from everyone?????

Gill79 · 15/10/2007 16:26

check it out Jo - ECing although I think I find the prospect a bit scary. There is an entire blog on this page about a poo....
I'm planning to use washable most of the time but disposables from time to time (and to start with!). If you can combine washables with early potty training I suppose that's the most enviro friendly option (and there's an argument that they're more likely to potty train if they can feel they're wet which would be less likely with a disposable). Although tbh what would I know!! Absolutely nothing and am prepared to stand corrected

leesmum · 15/10/2007 16:38

Hi everyone.

Being a twin myself i asked my mum about her pregnancy, and she said that as there was no scans then they strapped her down with a big band over her tummy and X-RAY'ed her!! to check how many were in there!!

Anyway by her dates my sis and i were a week over and she had a nice natural birth what lasted about 2 hrs altogether.

One of us was 5lb 2oz and the other 6lb 2oz which is very good for twins, what i was wondering is what all those of you expecting twins think about being induced early and possibly having a cs? Does the prospect of going full-term and delivering yourself seem a bit daunting or are you just leaving it in the hands of mw's and doctors.

I find it really fascinating, not that i'm wishing for two more myself!!

Gill79 · 15/10/2007 16:41

don't think that's bad widgetsmummy - the reason I am keen on a proper flat carrycot is so that I can leave it to sleep in there when we're back from the day's adventures.

miniandme · 15/10/2007 17:28

Leesmum im hoping to go to at least 34/35 weeks which there is no reason i shouldnt apart from the babies getting too big and folling my body into thinking its time to get rid.Im 24 weeks now and measuring 29 so body already 5 weeks ahead of itself.
For me its paramount that i haev a natural delivery as i have 3 other kids at home 2 of whom have special needs, one quite severe so i need to be in out and mobile asap after delivery.Consultant knows this and will work with me on avoiding cs,im a large lady as it is so again a cs poses even more risk to me so to be avoided at all costs. Was told by consultant that they are happy to go for natural delivery of both ,but we shoudl have almosy definate gameplan by 30 weeks scan as unless masses of fluid they tend to stay put after that gestation,so if we haev at least one head down its a go for natural delivery- then we just wait lol

MERLYPUSS · 15/10/2007 20:17

I am having a c-sect for my twins as I have epilepsy and physical stress causes me to flip (have a seizure ).
I am also thinking of going down the washable nappies route but will start with disposables til I get in the swing of things. I think I have to formular feed due to my drugs so I will need that off pat before I start anything new, also will need help loading the washer when I get home.
Buggies. Argh. I am going to have a look at the out and about nipper. Can't get travel systems (that I know of) for twins so that was one less choice.

princessllama · 15/10/2007 20:38

ahh buggies! my friend told me on no account to get a fancy pants one last time as she'd tried and tested with no. 1 and found useless. she highly recommended maclaren that lies flat from birth. it's brill, way cheaper than lots so you don't worry about it being trashed on planes or if you have another baby again and have to change buggies. also you really can hold the baby on your hip and fold the buggy with other arm-massively useful for loads of situations, like in and out of car, on a bus...
if you really want to find out, stop mums in the street/playground and ask them what they think of theirs. they're usually really keen to help. also, i don't know a single mum who has not gone out and bought a simpler buggy after having been seduced at antenatal stage by buggaboo type. just buy a good car seat that can stay in car so you never have to huff and puff putting it in or out. (apart from 1st out of hospital!)
re nappies-i have been using reusables for whole of lo's first year -except going away on holiday/overnights at other peoples etc and def. first few weeks when there is just poo everywhere and you're knackered and first week its very dark and horrible...(the poo that is)
sympathy on the gt test doesn't sound good, would really struggle to go without food that long.

tyaca · 15/10/2007 22:24

egg and minime -- so good to see pics! i will take one of mine and add it the moment i get one. had a bit of a spurt a couple of weeks ago, but still barely there

sleep - i find it impossible to stay awake at weekends then am wide awake every weekday night at 1am.

scan tomo!!!!! am more scared than i thought i would be. before pg, you assume you will have a healthy baby, but now i feel like i have to prepare myself for things not being 100% perfect. dh doesn't get it and even me saying it upsets him, but i feel like i need to be prepared.

re buggies etc, my mum just bought me a second hand silvercross travel system. about to go google, cause haven't heard of it. anyone know anything about it?

SH gutted 'cause my parents had promised to buy us a travel system and he had been eying up the bugaloos! me, i'm not so bothered and am happy to redirect their generosity towards some Stokke nursery furniture.....

tyaca · 15/10/2007 22:25

edit ** DH not SH....

what would SH stand for i wonder....?

Egg · 16/10/2007 08:27

Hello just a quickie to say that the Buzz is suitable from six months as a pushchair, but you can put the maxi cosi car seat on it so can use it from birth with that...

Back later .

samsmam · 16/10/2007 09:14

PL- Which Maclaren is it that lays flat for from birth? I guess you are talking double?

Does anyone know of a cheap way of accomadating a newborn and will be 16 month old buggy wise?

Egg · 16/10/2007 09:22

MacLaren Techno XT here (and maybe also Techno Classic...) are suitable from birth. They have more padding than the cheaper MacLarens and lie flat, and also the wheels are better so makes for a softer ride. Always worth looking at Kiddicare (in the link above) as they tend to be a lot cheaper than most places. You can go to Mothercare etc to actually see the prams in person, try them out etc, then buy from Kiddicare - hurrah!

Have had to put DS back to bed two hours after he got up (he normally is up until 12:30ish) as he has been sobbing all morning after coughing all night. He doesn't cough in day. Going to see docs tomorrow. He will miss his music thing this morning and swimming this afternoon (unless he perks up for swimming but don't think I will take him). He has missed FIVE swimming lessons in a row due to being ill before hols, then being away for two weeks.

Got so much to do, the house has not been cleaned for weeks but just don't have the energy...

Egg · 16/10/2007 09:27

Samsmam, not sure what is best for your two. I think you will definitely need a double, as my DS is 20 months and has been walking since 11 months but am worrying about him not having a buggy at 23 months let alone at 16, he would not have been able to walk everywhere, mainly because he goes wandering in the wrong direction. Maybe a buggy board but have not tried one yet, although will wait to see what others say as 16 months might be a bit young. I am planning to get a buggy board for my DS as will not entertain the idea of a triple buggy! I reckon you are prob best off with something like Phil n Teds here that you can convert back to a single when your DD no longer needs to go in, but they are expensive. Always lots going second hand on MN though, so am sure you could get a good deal, if I was having one baby this time I would definitely have gone for P&T.

Sorry, I sound like a real buggy geek, you want to speak to someone like Misdee, she has tried them all!!!!
