jooseyfruit · 03/10/2007 15:42

she the one who boinked mick jagger?
she really is quite hatchet faced.

anyone else have any "hilarious" pregnancy brain stories??

I went swimming with the kids yesterday, so shaved my legs in the shower yesterday morning.............or so i thought! Imagine my surprise when i finally got in the pool, only to discover that i'd only shaved one leg! oh how we laughed.

rozzyraspberry · 03/10/2007 16:28

Sorry some of you aren't feeling so hot right now!

On maternity leave I plan to finish up around the 20th of January which is 3 weeks before due date. I then have 3 weeks holiday to use so will officially start my mat leave around my due date. I worked up to 4 weeks before with ds1 and ds2 with no problems. It does depend on the individual - I've been lucky with problem free pregnancies (so far fingers crossed) and I have a desk job so not on my feet all day or anything.

Also with already having 2 pre-school children I only work 3 days a week and think being at work is more relaxing than being at home in some ways - definitely quieter!! I want to have as much time at home as possible after babys born which is why I plan to work later. Going down to part-time for a few weeks seems a good option as that'll give you time to get organised and then when you start maternity leave proper you can just relax!! It's so hard making the decision at this stage though - there's just no knowing how we'll all be feeling by then!

violeta · 03/10/2007 16:56

Re maternity leave - yes, it is difficult having to plan it out more or less with work at the moment. I've said I'll be starting mat leave on 1st Feb, so 3 weeks before due date. I really do have no idea how I'll be feeling in Jan though (first baby!), which is why my boss (more experienced in these matters presumably) was actually quite surprised and expected me to be starting at Xmas! We've left it quite open for Jan though - like the OP, I may well go part-time, miss rush hour (in London) or work from home. We'll see.

tyaca · 03/10/2007 17:36

jooseyfruit - preg moments here...

went to turn up gas when boiling potatoes, and rather than turn up the right knob, turned a dif one on completely without igniting! THEN when i started smelling gas, i sat there for quarter of an hour thinking that i hadn't realised being pg made you smell strange things....

dh could smell the gas before he walked thru front door......

just walked out of opticians with contact lenses while my card was still in machine to pay. assistant thought i was bonkers as she chased me down street, thought she just meant i'd left my card, didnt realised i hadn't evn finished actually paying

ho hum

jooseyfruit · 03/10/2007 18:07

happens to the best of us!!
shaving leg incident comes hot on the heels of me only shaving one armpit about two weeks ago.

step away from the razor!

Any more pregnancy swiss cheese brain stories!

Amy78 · 03/10/2007 19:46

I'm thinking of starting my maternity leave after the Christmas break. That's about 5 weeks before my due date. It seems like a long time before - especially as the latest bump would arrive is the 1st of March! However, I've quite a stressful job (SEN Teacher at a residential school) which involves very long hours so it seems to make sense. That and the fact I can take my year and go back after the following Christmas hols.

It's certainly not been easy working out when to start - especially when you have a boss who carried on til her waters broke (in the staffroom!)

I guess at the end of the day you just have to do what feels right for you and the baby. Must admit though I'm mightily impressed at those who can carry on right up until the end (I'm feeling bloody knackered now and dread to think what I'll feel like in another few months!)

Anyway, away for a long soak in the bath and then early to bed to see if I can get any sleep (much too excited about scan tomorrow). A bit upset that DH is offshore but hey, my mother is delighted that she's getting to go in his place!!

Take care x

manamana · 03/10/2007 21:27

Hi all
I've been away for ages as we've had no internet at home, have managed to catch up on bits and pieces while at work but never enough time to post as well. So, hopefully over the weekend I'll get a chance to read through some of the old posts - in the meantime I'll hog the space and update you on all my news!
Have had my 20 wk scan and all is well, and another little boy so quite excited but did have a tinge of sadness thinking won't have a girl (after this pregnancy definitely stopping at 2!).
Have also seen consultant and have decided on elective cs after major damage last time which required further surgery. Feeling very relieved, and have also told work that I'm going to finish at christmas so feel like all major decisions have been made. Very excited about idea of maternity leave. Last time I planned to have 2 and a half weeks off but left work Friday and waters broke that night - not even one lie-in, I am STILL bitter so no messing this time!
Off to see the midwife tomorrow for a routine check but really suffering from aching hips and pains in my groin and legs so hoping she'll be able to reassure me that its just ligament pains and not something sinister like SPD.
Anyway, off to try and catch up. Take care all.

Bessie123 · 04/10/2007 10:46

Urgh, I've been off work all week with SPD and a twisty dermoid cyst that has ballooned on my ovary - it's been no fun at all. Just back at work today, but still have a v sore hip.

Tell me nice stories to cheer me up.

bovrilsarnies · 04/10/2007 11:11

Hello all,

Amy - I have got my 20 week scan today too!! I'm V excited - it's at 1pm and I can't stop clock watching. What time is yours?

Work have let me "work from home" today - but haven't managed to get much done so far - have been distracted by stuff like MN and of course the fridge contents!!

Violeta - I too suggested I might start my mat leave end Jan / beginning of Feb - and my boss laughed at me saying he would be surprised if they saw me after xmas!! Mind you, this is my first LO and my boss has kids so he has seen what the last couple of months of pregnancy can do to a person!!?

Jo9977 · 04/10/2007 12:09

Ooh, ooh, all the best for scans today!!

Let us know how you get on!

Soz you're feeling so rubbish manamana and bessie. Hope better soon.

Bessie123 · 04/10/2007 13:16

Thanks, Jo. Am feeling lots better, just painful lower back and hip. Naughty baby.

gingermumi · 04/10/2007 16:33

Good luck with scans today and congrats to manamana.

Haven't felt baby move much today, anyone else have days when they can't feel much? Perhaps he's facing backwards?!

bovrilsarnies · 04/10/2007 17:32

Hello everybody,

Thanx for all the good luck wishes - they obviously did the trick coz I have had my scan, and there are no anomolies!! ! ! !

DP managed to wangle a long lunch break too so he could meet me at the hospital.

The loverly sonographer - Salli - asked if we wanted to know the sex....... so we said yes please...... DP was rooting for it to be a boy......I was rooting for it to be a girl........... and .........it's a girl!!!

My DSD texted me this morning before she went to school (she is 11 years old) and wished us luck at the scan, and said she would text later to see how we got on. She phoned at ten past four desperate to know if she had a little brother or sister on the way and was thrilled to find out it is a sister!!! (she was jumping up and down with excitement apparently!)

I will see her tomorrow, and can't wait to give her a scan picture - she will love it as it looks even more baby shaped than the last scan picture she had, and she framed that one!! bless her cotton ones!

Bessie123 · 04/10/2007 17:44

Bovrilsarnies - congrats on a good scan. Have you started choosing names yet? So exciting...

bovrilsarnies · 04/10/2007 18:11

Thanks Bessie - no names yet, but at least we only have to find a girls name we agree on! tee hee. Still hoping to find a Welsh name though, in keeping with DP's side of the family.

Amy78 · 04/10/2007 19:25

Hi

Just back from my scan this afternoon. Everything looks well but I have to go back next Friday as bump was too fidgity to get a clear view of the heart. Not to worry though. The lady doing the scan said she'd never seen such a wriggler! And it's about 2 and a half weeks bigger than it should be! May be closer to the original date of the 3rd after all rather than the 16th.

I kept trying to see if it was a girl or boy (they don't tell you in Aberdeen) but no luck. Maybe next week will shed some more light!

Glad to hear everyone else's good news.

alkar · 04/10/2007 19:28

Congratulations to manamana and bovril on your scans

I am thinking of leaving work on the 14th December. I never get a chance to sit down at work and I think 6 weeks before m due date I will appreciate a slower pace. Everyone wants time of over christmas anyway so I know they would just leave me on my own - do not fancy that at all its too hard now!

mutha2beagain · 04/10/2007 21:09

Hi all,

Love hearing the baby brain stories. I put the cordless handset from home in my handbag thinking it was my mobile. ... doh!

Just had private scan and all is in order thank goodness it seems except that they said that one renal pelvis was slightly dilated which may mean that babs may need antibiotics when it is born. They suggested it be monitored and I get rescanned at 28 weeks. Any ideas anyone - they didn't imply that anything was anatomically wrong, just that the measurement was on the large side for the gestation of baby.

Also thought with no one else being around I could secretly find out flavour of the baby but sonographer wouldn't play ball!!! Anyway 3d pics look very little boy like... shall just have to wait another 17 weeks to find out for sure!!

The main thing is that I can now take DS to NHS scan knowing that they aren't going to spring any unpleasant surprises on us so it will be a happy family event hopefully. So exciting to see pictures - it really is a miracle of life isn't it???

We're all having huge laughs about the Bringing up Baby programme at work .... I work for child and parent/infant psychotherapists who have a few opinions of their own in these matters...!!!!

I'm thinking of knocking work on the head definitely before Xmas. I at least want to have the luxury of waddling round the shops doing my xmas shopping far from the madding crowds of the weekend, then leave all the baby shopping and full on nesting mode (not too much anyway) till January.

K27 · 05/10/2007 11:15

I am also thinking of working up to the 21st of December. With hols left over, my maternity leave should start in Jan, which leaves me about 6 weeks b4 the baba should arrive.

Quick q, I am almost 22 weeks and have felt no moving at all. Not even this fluttering sensation that people have described. Anyone else the same as me? In my scan last week as I watched the baby it would not stop moving, its a right wiggler.

KTx

gingermumi · 05/10/2007 12:08

K27 - if it's your first baby it is not unusual to be a bit later feeling the movements. I would check with MW or doc if you're worried - how long ago was your scan?

SallyInYorkshire · 05/10/2007 17:06

Hello everyone!
I had my 20 week scan and everything was fine! yay!

Suddenly this week I am looking a lot more pregnant (ie people are commenting on how much my belly has grown in the last week!).

Also I am feeling REALLY tired this week - wonder if those things are connected.

3madboys · 05/10/2007 17:12

i have my twenty week scan next week i am excited but nervous.

re mutha2bagains post about renal pelvic dilatation, ds1 had that on both his kidneys at the 20wk scan, i had a further scan which showed the same and after birth he was put on a very small dose of antibiotics to help prevent him getting a urine infection etc, he then had ultra sound scan at 6wks, which showed no change so we carried on with the antibiotics, and then at 3mths he was scanned again and given the all clear it is very common apparently, esp with boys. and is generally nothing to worry about, i got in touch with the british kidney association who were very helful with info etc and they sent ds1 a little cuddly bear he is now 8 and has had no problems at all. hth xxxxxx

lljkk · 05/10/2007 19:34

DS had dilated renal pelvis, and to be honest they bandied words like "chromosone disorder" around quite a lot. I had about 6 extra scans in the end; it's a condition almost exclusive to boys. It was very stressful, I would be braced in case the NHS interprets it differently, Muhta.
Antibiotics were not mentioned or prescribed for DS... and while DS has turned out to be a selfish little hothead, it isn't down to any chromosone problems.

Well, not unless you count the Y-chromosone, obviously .

3madboys · 05/10/2007 19:54

actually we were given a photocopied hand out which mentioned chromosomal problems etc and a whole host of things that really upset me, i went to see my gp who was great and did some research for us and then we got in touch with the british kidney association who were also very good.

it is a very common thing for them to pick up on the twenty week scan apparently. did they say how much it was dilated by? we were given measurements in milimiteres, one of ds1's was two mils to big, the other was 8mils too big . when he was a few months old there was talk of putting a catheter in and inserting dye etc to have a look for blockages, but in the end that never happened. i think there is another thread on mumsnet with a lot of similar stories, if i can find it i will post a link for you

93pjb · 06/10/2007 16:50

Hi K27,

I wouldn't worry I only just figured out the difference between kicking/fluttering and wind! Even then it was only because I was worried about things and went to the doctor who checked the heartbeat with a sonic aid. When the kick and the heartbeat were in the same place I finally put two and two together! Now I can tell what they are I notice it more but find I have to be sitting still to notice. hth
