Hi everyone! Let's have a rousing chorus of PELVIC FLOOR!

Loucee I'm not doing the course but read the hypno-birthing book. Not convinced it's my kind of thing but if you can get into the right frame of mind I imagine it would be good.

Had my first ante-natal class the other day (just the normal midwife ones, not NCT or other). I think it may be a bit of a waste of time and the midwife who led it was a bit too ditzy for my liking. The first thing we had to do was tell everyone our name, who gave it to us (?!) and what it means! How the frig should I know??! A physio was supposed to come for the second hour to start telling us how to get our pre pg bodies back but she didn't turn up, nice. But we are going to look around the birth suite on Monday, so that should be good.

I've forked out £200 for my NCT classes and am going to have to miss half of them because they clash with my evening course. Stupid college didn't arrange the day of the week my course would be on until the last minute . Hope the NCT ones are worth it - if only to meet people. I'm sure mumsnet will help with any advice I need, and of course there's our mumsnet meet up too to look forward to.

Does anyone think I'm crazy opting for a home birth for my first one? Since telling MW on Tuesday that's what I wanted I'm now worrying about it.

mimicakey · 28/09/2007 12:41

MrsWizz - the more I learn the more I think home birth is the way to go. I'm not going to have one but am going to stay at home for as long as I dare.

I think NCT classes are worth it to meet people, like you say. Mine are full unfortunately.

Mrswizz · 28/09/2007 12:42

Thanks Mimi

mixedmama · 28/09/2007 12:51

Mrswizz - i think as long as you are confy with the idea then go for it, you can change your mind at any point nobody is make you stay at home if you dont want to in the end.

Mimi - very jealous of your classes being so early - last time didnt start mine till I think 36 weeks (may have been 340 but then the class gradually dwinddled as people were off giving birth before it ended. It was pretty rubbish tho... just lots of talking from a very experienced MW but with the drearyest voice ever...

mimicakey · 28/09/2007 13:04

hehe! Mine was nice enough but I'm glad she's not my actual midwife.

I think I'm going to get annoyed with all this choice stuff e.g. when to cut the cord. I learnt that if you leave it until it stops pulsating then more good blood etc will have gone into the baby, which makes sense I guess. But then someone else pointed out that if the baby is above the level of the placenta, the opposite will happen, again, makes sense. So what's the point of me putting on my birth plan that I want to do xyz, why doesn't the midwife just do whatever is best? Same with skin to skin contact - if it's pretty clearly the best thing to do, why do you have to specify that's what you want?

I don't mean to sound prickly but they (hopefully!) know a lot more about this stuff than me!

suey2 · 28/09/2007 13:09

housemum i found the wrap top great in the earlier stages, but now it is v difficult to not get gaps! I always give up.
I really love their ruched sid t-shirts, though- v flattering and v comfy.

Just to let all those lovely people who gave me advice and asked, a while ago I applied for another job which was the next step up for me in this wonderful field of data analysis - I've got an interview!!
But thinking I might not go for it, as I don't want to want to lose my maternity package here....??

kerioke · 28/09/2007 13:16

afternoon! how is everyone?

am envious of all your mat clothes... i am so uncomfortable i am dossing in brown maternity tracky bottoms and dp's boxers!! (underneat trousers of course!) am really starting to look forward to 'after baby' now.. sounds awful, but everything seems put on hold until 'after baby' lol

if anyone has any spare time today one of our december girls AWEN has posted over int he pregnancy forum title says about being 26/27 weeks with spotting and BH's... she could do with a bit of 'december support' if anyones up for it?? i think we have all felt down some days and she is stuck in a rut alone with post op ds and these new pregnancy worries.. really feeling for her.

got scared last night cos BH's went into overdrive (have had them since 22 weeks) but were coupled with really severe back ache... think i am sitting around too much due to SPD and now causing back to join in... lol i do sound sorry for myself ay?

MotherofZ · 28/09/2007 13:18

kerioke
men's boxer shorts are fantastic aren't they??

mimicakey · 28/09/2007 13:25

Hooray! Well done MotherofZ! I would definitely go to the interview; you don't have to decide anything until they offer you the job.

claraq · 28/09/2007 13:32

Hello good afternoon.

Motherofz - congratulations on getting an interview - go for it! It'll be good practice if nothing else and I think I said when you were wondering whether to apply or not, they will at least know you are interested in case another job comes up later. Or you might decide after the interview that it is not the place for you - but at least you would know....

Whoever was asking about NCT - it's definitely worth it to meet people. Around here, you have a "class supporter" (which I have done myself); you meet at their house for coffee after the classes have finished until the youngest baby is about six weeks old and it is a brilliant way to get to know a group of women going through exactly what you are. Most of my group of six still meet up most weeks two years on, and many of us are on to our second now!

I can't remember who else on here is hoping for a VBAC like me but I am getting a little panicky. I spoke to a friend this morning who had had a c-section first time and natural birth the second time and said she would chose the c-section every time. Gulp. Am I making a huge mistake????

Finally, maternity wear, don't go there! I have about two and a half pairs of trousers which are suitable now and terrified they are not going to fit by the time the baby comes. But really don't want to fork out for more when I only have 9 weeks until my due date and not planning to have any more babies....

mixedmama · 28/09/2007 13:34

Congrats MoZ... that is great. Whatever you decide at least you know you are the kind of candidate that these sort of jobs / employers will want to interview. Good luck with your decision amking.

Mimi - I see your point regarding why bother make those decisions on the birth plan. You dont have to - just include the thingsa that do matter to you, doesnt have to be everything. I think some people prefer for baby to be cleaned up etc before being given to them so they would specify in that instance, some people may want to donaate cord blood. I only put specific info in mine.... not stuff that I am not bothered about.

mixedmama · 28/09/2007 13:35

meant to say equally you could just decide that your birth plan says

"would like to go witht he flow, be given information when asked for and then make a decision"

mixedmama · 28/09/2007 13:37

I bought a great ppair of maternity trackie bottoms from Next - not particularly lovely but so comfy towards the end of pregnancy.

My British geography is soooo bad, that I dont actully know exactly where most places are.... I actually thought (up until about 6 months ago) that Manchester and Liverpool were on the Eastern side of England.

Mrswizz · 28/09/2007 13:47

MotherofZ, I think you should deffo go to the interview. Many congrats for getting one. You can decide afterwards if its worth taking any further.

My birth plan is to try a home birth. If I can't handle it then I'll get the midwife to get me to the hospital. Most of all to get the baby out safely. That's it- I don't know or care about the rest until it happens. So I agree with your post Mixedmama.

MotherofZ · 28/09/2007 13:55

If i was to go to the interview should I be bold and proud of my bump or discreet?? I know it's illegal, but it doesn't stop employers from thinking against you, after all they are looking out for thier own interest.
Oh so confused!!!

becklespeckle · 28/09/2007 13:56

Hi all! Maternity clothes are a real pain, I am not too bad for bottoms at the moment and have got some mat jeans from Next. The under bump ones need a belt to stop the builder's bum (just holds it over my hips) and the over bump ones need a safety pin to make them a little tighter so they stay up! Tops are another matter though! Even though I am very short in the body I keep having to pull the tops down where they are riding up over my bump! I am looking for some jumpers now but according to DH I look like a whale in most stuff, he says its because all of me is small apart from my belly and boobs .

People also can't believe that I still have 3 months to go either! I was an 8/10 before baby, roughly 34/27/32 - am now 38/40/36!

I don't see why people are against Epidurals really. I don't fancy one but that is because the thought of a heffing great needle in my back is not too appealing! As for birth plans, I had a couple of shots of Pethedine with DS1 and the second one really confused me so with DS2 I put that I wanted as little pain relief as possible, they took me at my word and it hurt like hell! Hoping for somewhere in between this time!

MotherofZ, sorry you have been feeling rough hun, I would probably go for the interview - if you get the job could you not negotiate a start for after you have had LO? All interviews are good practice and it is good to know you have the right stuff going for you to get that far!

mixedmama · 28/09/2007 14:00

A girl at work who I have met twice today declared that i am "huge", just smiled and said my last one was 7.5 lbs and she said "this one is much bigger". Must not be feeling so irritable tho now as i didnt feel the urge to hit her...... What makes people who dont know you say things liek that??

The thing is i am not actually overly huge.

Mrswizz · 28/09/2007 14:00

MoZ, how big are you? I couldn't hide my bump now if my life depended on it ( unless on the tube, then it's invisible). You'll have to tell them at some point I guess, so just dress smartly and professionally and if your bump shows then it shows.

Mrswizz · 28/09/2007 14:02

Mixedmama, I think people just say things for the sake of it without thinking. It gets really boring when people say the same things all the time. You're probably not huge, but people either have no experience or they're just trying to find something to say. I wish they'd shut up and say nothing.

Mrswizz · 28/09/2007 14:04

Becklespeckle, I use a bump band if my tops are too short. I've got a black one from topshop and a flowery one from Jojomamanbebe. They fill the gap and are nice and cosy.
