@woollycat The risk is still so low though, I know it’s all over the news but the number of people catching it is still low and the number of deaths also relatively low (as tragic as those deaths are of course). I’m trying not to let it take over my thoughts, but it is hard not to be concerned.

AlmostAlwyn · 28/02/2020 20:45

I don't think you should be any more worried about it than flu at the moment. Obviously, use sense when you're out and about, wash your hands thoroughly and regularly. The media is really going crazy. No one is asking anything about brexit any more!

woollycat · 29/02/2020 08:33

@sazzlerazzle @Pastnowfuture @AlmostAlwyn which Poang rocking chair did you go for? There are two, to me they look identical but one is £215, the other is £145.

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/poaeng-rocking-chair-birch-veneer-robust-glose-eggshell-s29861013/ - this is the £215

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/poaeng-rocking-chair-birch-veneer-hillared-anthracite-s19201027/ - this is the £145

woollycat · 29/02/2020 08:35

Oh, I think the more expensive one is leather.

AlmostAlwyn · 29/02/2020 09:15

@woollycat I don't have the rocking chair version, just the regular poang armchair (in a design with green leaves that they don't seem to have at the moment!). The way it's designed it has "bounce" to it without being a rocking chair, which I liked!

Similar to this one:

sazzlerazzle · 29/02/2020 09:44

@woollycat yes that’s right, it’s the leather one. I’ve got the first one but in Lysed Grey for £135. Super comfortable. Because you pick the frame and seat pad separately, you can always put a different colour pad on it in the future if it moves rooms or you change colour schemes.

Sunshine8888 · 29/02/2020 10:16

@almostalwyn I totally agree. The media are just scaremongering. Coronavirus is just like flu and it’s really only seriously affecting older, vulnerable people. Just be more aware of your own personal hygiene - sadly some people don’t think to cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing and those are the ones who will be spreading the virus and putting others at risk 😔

Emmacb82 · 29/02/2020 10:47

I’m a paeds nurse and we haven’t even been told anything about Coronavirus or what we are supposed to do if we have a suspected case! I think a lot of what we are hearing is media spreading rumours and until the outbreak is officially here then try and carry on as normal. I’ve added some extra bits to my food shopping just to have a bit of a supply as we are very bad and shop as we go most of the time. I’m really hoping that I’ve started mat leave by the time it hits the hospitals though, the swine flu year was bad enough, this is going to be a different scale I think!

facevalue · 29/02/2020 11:46

@emmacb82 that's concerning that you will be looking after kids ( our kids maybe depends where you work) and you don't know what you are supposed to do! are you sure you don't have an email from your hospital saying what you need to do if you come across someone! please speak to the head nurse or your manager

@AlmostAlwyn the virus is not just " the simple flu". young people also can die- there is no vaccine! the fuss is real - it is so real that the government will have a cobra urgent meeting/ planes cancelled/ meetings cancelled/ borders closing/ stock markets are crashing

i am NOT saying we should live in a state of panic but the risk is real and the concern is valid

i received 3 update emails from my DD's nursery telling us what to do and what to expect.

@Sunshine8888 when you are pregnant - your immune system is lower than normal so like old people we are at risk of complications. obviously if you catch it and you are at the end > 34 weeks pregnant the baby is more likely to do better when delivered but earlier it's more risky - it's unknown

GinUnicorn · 29/02/2020 11:53

Hey all. Hope everyone is doing well.

I hear the names dilemma. Have chosen a girl but have a few possible boys names. I think it’s a girl though.

I’m not too worried about Coronavirus in honesty. There is nothing we can do about it other than take sensible precautions and extra antibacterial wash so no sense in stressing which is good for no one.

Anyone else suddenly have a return of morning sickness? I thought I would be over this at 29 weeks. Sad

facevalue · 29/02/2020 12:10

@ginunicorn i have noticed this nausea ( but also feeling over hot) for the last 10 days i'm 29 weeks too.. i took a couple of antisickness tablets- i'm glad it's not just me ( sorry i know sounds horrible ). i also feel a little more vague lightheaded ness even when i'm sat on a chair 🙄

GinUnicorn · 29/02/2020 12:16

@facevalue I’m always hot at the moment too! I’m usually always cold. Let’s hope it passes soon. I really thought sickness was over

Pastnowfuture · 29/02/2020 12:34

@woollycat I have the cheaper one just because I generally prefer fabric to leather.

Emmacb82 · 29/02/2020 12:39

@facevalue the chances of us having a child just wandering into our department with the virus is actually quite slim. We have to take referrals from GP or A+E so they are the first port of call. And I’m very sure that those departments have indeed already got Coronavirus protocols in place. I’m sure there are plans being put in place, I’m just saying we haven’t had any specific training yet (our ward, Im sure a+e, it’s etc have had more). We are not daft though, we are very hot on infection control etc and actually managing the disease itself won’t be much different to the flus/pneumonia’s we get now. I was just making the point that the media have stirred everything up to near hysteria when they don’t need to at present. I’m not going to wandering about it the corridor wondering what to do 😂I’ve been a nurse for a very very long time!

Pastnowfuture · 29/02/2020 12:46

My OH previously studied the control of infectious disease. He hasn't studied the corona virus specifically but based on information available publically he has said it's impact is significantly worse than flu because it spreads more easily and has a higher mortality rate. I know he is worried about me and his elderly parents but in reality life goes on and until it spreads further there is nothing we can do other than follow basic guidelines. With this in mind I just try not to think about it as I'm prone to anxiety.

AlmostAlwyn · 29/02/2020 12:47

@facevalue you using quotation marks like that implies that's what I said, which isn't the case, nor did I say that concern wasn't valid. I said you shouldn't be any more worried than you might be about flu (which can have serious complications in pregnancy). You are currently much more likely to get flu than coronavirus, but coronavirus is getting all the attention because it's new and a more unknown quantity, not to mention the crazy media hype.

You say you're "NOT saying we should live in a state of panic", but also then saying that it's "concerning" that someone working in health care hasn't received additional instructions and suggesting they've somehow missed an important communication doesn't really foster a sense of calm.

At the moment, it's important to be alert, but not anxious.

Pastnowfuture · 29/02/2020 13:44

@AlmostAlwyn I think alert but not anxious sums it up perfectly.

Sunshine8888 · 29/02/2020 14:19

@facevalue I am completely aware that pregnant women have lower immune systems. I just don’t think this mass hysteria and scaremongering is necessary. Of course people need to be much more vigilant and follow the guidance but panicking people about it is not going to help

Sunshine8888 · 29/02/2020 14:22

On a different topic, I have now started the digital hypnobirthing course and I’m really enjoying it 😊

facevalue · 29/02/2020 14:53

@Emmacb82 ofcourse you are sensible and generally good with infection control. you also know that all infections are not the same that's why u do get trained on how to deal with a kid with chickenpox, hand foot and mouth, multi drug resistant TB, HIV etc they are all completely different. we expect the police to have specific training if there is a terror alert which will be different than a bomb alert etc. i still would encourage you to find out what u r expected to do if u r faced with a kid or their parents/ grandparents etc ( you don't only see kids) if they say we have symptoms and we returned from a risky area- no shame in learning more

@AlmostAlwyn i'm sure you know the difference in what the difference in the meaning of panic vs concern so it's clear what that comment means. and all nurses and doctors and healthcare professionals be actively checking what they should do in these situations as it's their duty of care of us the patients/ public so no more explanation is needed about this point either ( ofcourse you can disagree etc but that's just a common expectation/ acceptable understanding)

@sunshine8888 i really don't know where you live but there is no sense of hysteria or scaremongering when you walk the streets of london - being sensible and concerned is a good thing.

@Pastnowfuture i completely agree- the problem is that this virus is extremely contagious and it's not as simple as someone coughing on you when they don't cover their mouth!

facevalue · 29/02/2020 14:54

@Sunshine8888 one of my best friends ( not hippy at all) she swears by hypnobirthing- she literally uses very little gas and air. highly recommends it x

Emmacb82 · 29/02/2020 15:06

I think let’s bring the thread back to our lovely babies and not complicate it with Coronavirus. I will do exactly what I need to for my patients, I don’t need to be told what to do. There will be training, I’m sure they are just prioritising the essential areas first who are most likely to have first contact with people.

Has anyone used a baby carrier/sling before or have bought one for baby? I keep looking at them but they are either stupidly expensive or too cheap?! Any recommendations?

Raindancer411 · 29/02/2020 15:10

I downloaded a free hypnobirthing mp3 but I cannot take it seriously and have no clue how it is meant to help. I mean one of the statements is I am enjoying my pregnancy (but I am not lol)

facevalue · 29/02/2020 15:13

@emmacb82 i wish someone told me about the baby sling library before I had my DD. we went to mothercare and tried 3 of what they had. after we had the baby i saw other mums with better slings and i ended up not using mine ( my husband used it) because i found it bulky but it was nice for my husband because he's taller and stronger. i think if u google baby carrier / sling library near me u can go a try many options x good luck

facevalue · 29/02/2020 15:16

@Raindancer411 hehe i think it will be hard but hypnosis is not for everyone, but it is scientifically proven that you convince yourself/ brain to feel / cope with training- like prisoners learning to escape by daydreaming and imagining being outdoors. i would love to try it but i already know i'm having a C section so no point 😑
