I think I'm starting to get a bit of energy back and haven't really felt sick the last couple of days so fingers crossed I'm over the worst now.

I was with a friend of mine a couple of days ago when she got a phone call telling her that a relative of hers had had a baby, the only thing is this relative didn't even know she was pregnant! Apparently she hadn't been feeling right for a few months and the doctor had done tests on her but no-one realised she was pregnant. Then she had bad stomach pains on the weekend, the gp sent her to hospital saying it was probably an infection and when she got there she was told she was having a baby and it was born the next day! She had also been bungee jumping recently!!

walkingwomb · 01/11/2007 11:21

Indigo blue - i am never sure when I hear stories like that if it is real or not. Did she not have a bump or anything? it is amazing. What a shock!

I have been told by several people since i announced I am preggers that they want to have a good old poke of my tummy (even though it is just all squishy at the mo). Now they are very good friends and i don't really mind. But the problem is that my tummy is getting a bit hairy below my belly button. I am very dark so very paranoid about body hair. Should i wax it? leave it? Any advise appreciated!

Wolverina · 01/11/2007 12:56

Hi everyone
Would anyone be able to give me some advice regarding the 20 week scan? The situation is, I live in Singapore and my am 20 weeks pregnant on Xmas Day, but we will be back in UK from when I am 18 to 22 weeks, so will have to have to have the scan back there, and will have to have it done privately as am no longer resident of UK.

Has anyone had a scan done privately? If so, how easy was it to book, eg did you have to give a lot of notice or could it be last minute, and were they pretty flexible about the dates you are available? ( The thing is me and H both have big families so there will be a fair bit of travelling around visiting!)

Apart from this, all's going well. Had my 12 week scan yesterday - it was awesome! I got really embarrasingly choked up, because the baby looked so perfect, with arms and legs that s/he was waving around frantically, and I couldn't believe that s/he is only 5cm long..small but perfectly formed!! I don't get sentimental very often, but I was just thinking, this is such a miracle and I am so lucky. Ah well, I can just blame those pesky hormones whenever I start to get sappy!

Hope you're all feeling well x

Coolmama · 01/11/2007 12:58

I have to agree with WW - having had a baby, I am a little sceptical of people who claim they did not know they were pregnant!
I have to say that also, you will probably be fine with people touching your belly now, but I absolutely hated it when I was bigger and strangers just assumed they could pat your tummy - used to irritate the crap out of me - and you will be amazed at how many people do it!
With regards to the waxing, I also found that my skin was a little more sensitive so waxing (which previously have been almost painless for me) was not really an option and the line from belly to pubic bone will still develope and be visible anyway, but is entirely up to you - I don't think it's harmful at all.

Coolmama · 01/11/2007 13:02

Hi Wolverina - have the same problem with my 20 weeks scan - also needs to be just before xmas - if you are in London, then there are places where you can have it done privately although you will need to book at least 10 days to 2 weeks in advance (just to be on the safe side and if you want your choice of dates). If you leave it any later, you may still be able to get a scan, but it will be taking whatever is offered rather than choosing yourself. Can't help if you are outside London, though. Am sure one of the other ladies will be able to make suggestions.

IndigoBlue · 01/11/2007 13:09

I know, I've always been sceptical about people having babies and not knowing they were pregnant but as it's the family of my friend I do believe it especially as I was there when she got the phonecall. The whole family is shocked - she just didn't look pregnant apparently, and the baby was under 6 lb so it wasn't that big i suppose.

Wolverina, I had a private scan done with my last pregnancy and I booked it a couple of weeks in advance but I think you can pretty much get one straight away so I don't think you'll have a problem but I'm sure others who've have private scans more recently will be able to advise you.

seaturtle · 01/11/2007 13:14

Hi everyone. Had my first scan Tuesday, at exactly 14 weeks (I keep very good personal records!) Couldn't believe how much the baby was moving already. Absolutely amazing. My official due date has been moved forward from 1st May to 26th April. Or maybe I just have a big baby.

I've started to buy little things to. I have a friend witha 9 month old, whose first piece of advice, when I told her I was pregnant, was that it was never too early to stock up on baby wipes.

walkingwomb · 02/11/2007 14:09

Hi Seaturtle - welcome and congrats!

WW

Hayleyandbaby · 02/11/2007 15:34

Walkingwomb- I've just shaved mine. DP wouldn't stop going on about it and I was shaving my legs when I decided to 'slip' with the razor and shave my line of tummy hair off. It was very blondish anyway and so soft and glittery I actually liked it. DP did not.hehe. He'd taken to calling me werewolf. It's not come back stubbly at all and the skin underneath is incredibly soft, so I'd recommend it even though everyone says not to. That's just me tho.

Good God, imagine not knowing you were pregnant, you couldn't use your hormones as an excuse for being a cow! And to just have to have a baby without any of the stuff must be terrifying. Altho a nicer option than an infection.

Seaturtle- is 14 weeks your first scan?I had mine at ten- eleven weeks and it was wriggling, i'd love to see it at 14 weeks. Glad it went well for you.

walkingwomb · 02/11/2007 15:47

Hayleyandbaby - my DH is very unimpressed with what a cow I am being, especially as my brother in law told him that my sister was sweetness and light from the moment she conceived (not normally!)

ColumbosWife · 02/11/2007 22:00

Hi Everyone,

I'll be saying Goodbye.

I finally had my scan today - decided against the nuchal one in the end, just went for the standard NHS one - but it's all academic because they think the baby died at 7 weeks. They could see a tiny fetus and a huge sac of fluid but no heartbeat. Now I have to decide whether to go for a surgical miscarriage or a medical one, a grim prospect in either case.

It's funny, because I'm always paranoid that the worst will happen and now it has.

Am in shock.

But also feeling so lucky that I already have two kids; I think this would have hit much harder if it was my first.

I've just had a large gin and tonic and am looking forward to drinking an entire cafetiere of coffee tomorrow for breakfast, after cutting down hugely on my daily caffeine fix for the baby.

Good luck everyone. Will be thinking of you all in May - and before.

xx

slim22 · 03/11/2007 01:21

Congratulations to all, initial posters and newcommers alike.

Been lurking since begining and was waiting for my 12 week scan to relax.
Was completely naive and on a rosy cloud with DS1. This time round, could not stop worrying.
Sending my sympathy and best wishes to Columboswife and others who've left this thread.

{{{{{hugs}}}}}} to those still suffering from MS. Did not have any first time, hit me this time. Yuk!
But better now. Good thing is my weight is still steady!

Special note to Wolverina....I'm also in Singapore! I'm 11+6 so EDD should be about 16-19th may. I'm seing Dr Shirin Jacob at the Camden medical/gleneagles.
Maybe we can share notes/questions on ante-natal care here and if you fancy walk in the Botanical gardens?

With regards to private scan in UK should not be a problem but do book ahead.
Had DS in London privately and was scanned at the foetal medicine centre in Harley street. They have a very good reputation.
Try the royal college of obstetrics website, they might have a full UK list ?

I suffered from SPD last time and can already feel some pain creeping back. Anyone else ? (not that wish it upon anyone).
I'm starting to feel some occasional shooting pain in the pubic bone but also pressure in the buttock/hip area wich I do not remember having last time.
Anyone familiar with this?

take care of yourselves.

torres · 03/11/2007 10:18

Colomboswife- am so sorry to hear your news. When you feel up to it, there's some great support on the ttc after mc thread. I found it invaluable, you can pour out all your emotions and they completely understand. Take care of yourself xxx

Bad timing in light of above, but I had my 12 week scan yesterday and all was fine so I finally feel able to join you properly (had a mc in Feb and this has made me even more anxious this time round). Baby was measuring a week ahead so I've been redated and due 7 May now.

Wolverina · 03/11/2007 12:57

Hi Slim22 - nice to see another S'pore resident here! At the moment I am seeing my GP at International Medical Clinic, but after 20 weeks will switch to TC Chang at Thompson Medical Centre. I had my scan with him the other day and really liked his approach; seems very easy going and 'unmedicalised", ie less eager to intervene than some I've heard about here. I recognise the name Shirin Jacob, is she from A Company For Women?

How old is your son? Mine is turning 5 in November, so will have a nice easy age gap. Would definitely like to meet up, don't go to Botanic Gardens very often (we live on East Coast at Katong) but I love it there and hear the new playground's really nice.

Hi to everyone else. Thanks to those who responded to my scan question, but amazingly will be able to have it done on the NHS at a small hospital near my parents (will have to pay, but not very much).

Columboswife, I was really sorry to hear your news. Please take care of yourself x

Hayleyandbaby · 03/11/2007 13:39

Columboswife- so sorry. Take care and definately take to the gin and coffee for a while- you deserve a treat.

walkingwomb- I had that problem for a while, but I was a bit of a cow when he met me, it's just magnified through pregnancy now, so I just say he knew what he was in for. Ooooh I hate lovely people who r sweetness and light, clearly they haven't cottoned on that it's the only time you can actually get away with being MEANNNNNN hehe

I was really worried last night because after some 'ahem' bedroom based rumpy fun, I had really bad cramps, and this carried on through the night. I've not had any bleeding and I've not been cramping today. Has anyone else had this?

I had terrible dreams last night that a polterguist was pressing on my tummy and trying to harm the baby so I grabbed our godson out of his cot and we ran downstairs to try and get out of the bulding. When I woke up I was still having cramps and so I think it must have been the cramps that had me dreaming that. I've had the craziest dreams since pregnant!!

Hayleyandbaby · 03/11/2007 13:51

Actually, there were a couple more things I needed to ask you all.

The first is, I've had severe headaches, weird pains in my legs, I'm sort of past the MS but started being really sick every now and again randomly- mostly in the middle of the night, and had my cramps i mentioned in the previous post, and I've been very dizzy. My pregnancy book sites these things as cause to 'see your doctor or midwife immediately'. I am inclined to think these are just a collation of pregnancy pregnancy niggles, but my partner is very worried (as I explained a while ago his cousin died shortly after giving birth last year due to pre-eclampsia). I don't want to bother the doctors with something insignificant, but I don't want to leave something I'm assuming isn't alittle more serious only to find out it is. What does everyone think?

The other thing is, we live in a flat (not a skanky one), and there are stairs down to the front door. There is one more flat (it is a converted house) and the other tennant leaves the front door open all the time as she's an irresponsible teenager, and if I leave my pram at the bottom of the stairs it will probably get damaged or stolen. Can I leave the baby in the flat alone whilst I drag a huge pram down a flight of stairs every time I want to take the baby out? I can't see how it will work.

Sorry for the two very long posts.

podglet · 03/11/2007 19:35

Hi,

Columboswife, so sorry to hear your news. Have a large gin for me and a lovely coffee tomorroe.

Hayley - I lived in a 2nd floor flat until 2 months ago. We had a shed downstairs for the pram - do you have anything like this? Then all you need to do is carry the LO down. If not, I used to pop DS in his cot, lock the flat up tight and RUN downstairs to sort it out before going back up to get him. This is probably classed as being a bad mummy but I found it was the only way when struggling up and down stairs.

As for weird dreams - me too! Had a VERY odd dream the other night about Dog the Bounty Hunter - please don't ask

Chuffed · 04/11/2007 22:18

Jacobandlysette - the triplets will probably be born in March too but I would like to stay here as well.

Glad all the scans are going well - so sorry Columboswife to hear your news...I think it is everyone's nightmare to find out that way.

All good for us, still feeling grim at night but am better through the day as long as I get enough sleep. The 12wk scan went well and it looks like everything is there. 2 of them were wriggly and 1 slept the whole way through so going by dd and ds that would make 2 girls and a boy but we'll see at the next scan. We had our appt at 1pm and after scan and appt with obstetrician and physician we left at 4.45pm . Lets just say that neither of us were very pleased with the amount of time taken.

I had a really good weekend and worked the parent child show in Auckland last weekend and got paid in Bamboozles (I got one in each colour). Is anyone else planning on using cloth. I am slowly accumulating the nappies I might possibly need, luckily I have lots from when ds was born.

Hayley I lived in a first floor flat when dd was born and we couldn't leave the pushchair in the hall as there wasn't enough room. We had a mountain buggy and I just put dd in and bumped down the stairs each time I wanted to go out. It wasn't too much problem but probably would be if it was more than that floor.

{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}

hayley i would def go to the drs, I am there all the time at the moment

blobsmummy · 05/11/2007 09:38

ColombusWife - sorry to hear about your news

Slim22 - I got SPD last time - agony! Am starting to get the odd niggle but nothing much. I've got my very sexy length of tubigrip from last time, so will be putting that on in a couple of weeks to nip any problems in the bud.

Hayley - I also tend to get cramps after the event which are quite painful, but not harmful - if you're worried though, get yourself checked out. I passed out so many times with DD whilst I was at work, that they've now set up the medical room for me in preparation this time around!

I'm sleeping about 2-3 hours at night now and am feeling utterly shattered. DD seems to have put on quite a bit of weight and gone through another growth spurt so am really struggling to lift her in and out of the cot - maybe it's time to put her in a bed for that reason alone!

Chuffed - tried cloth nappied with DD but she cried the whole time she was in them so in the end I sold the lot. I did try to do my bit for the environment and household budget, but she really didn't get on with them no matter what I did. (My mum says that my sister was exactly the same as a baby) I have other friends whose kids had no probs though, so good luck.

Oh, by the way, result on the lack of chair situation whilst on the library counter - boss has backed down and the chairs have been re-installed!! (Think it was my threat to faint that had something to do with it!)

bobsmum · 05/11/2007 12:47

Sorry to hear your news columbo

Slim22 - I've been wondering about niggles over the last week - especially after pushing a shopping trolley. I was definitely into 20 something weeks last time, please, please don't let it be sPD gain

Chuffed - I used cloth on both ds and dd and will do so again on no3. Bamboozles are lovely, but I don't recommend the Tots wraps (unfortunately, cos they're v cute) - they leak all the time. Motherease are unbeatable or wraps, but I don't rate their nappies as much as totsbots. Saved so much money and had no leaks using washables, but have never foud a disposable that doesn't leak. Washables have always prevented those minging leaks up the back and down the legs - eurgh!

I've had cotton, bamboozles (old style) and fluffles in the past and this time I'm going for fluffles because they won't need tumbling and stay soft.

The Baby Show in scotland is the weekend of my due date, so I'm planning to go, if I'm still in one piece and huff and puff around the stands hoping for freebies and cheap nappies. And if I do go into labour, then I can nip to the midwife stand and cause a bit of excitement

I am hating this time, because I still can't feel baby (although I'd felt the other 2 by now) and I don't see my m/w for another 2 weeks. 16 weeks on Thurs!!

blobsmummy · 05/11/2007 13:34

It's odd Bobsmum, but I found that Motherease leaked like a sieve on DD (she was very slim - I wonder if that made a difference) and the only nappies I've never ever had a leak from is Pampers disposable. I suppose all our LO's are different shapes and sizes!

Hope you're feeling kicked soon!
