Due March 2008 - another teeny tiny thread for dial ups and mobiles

Welcome. It seems that when we get to over 400 hundred posts then dial ups and mobiles can't handle loading the threads well. Sweetkitty, I hope this helps. xx

Hi there E14! I grew up in Beausejour, outside Winnipeg in Manitoba . I left in 2000 and was living and working in Italy for a few years, since 2004 I've been in England studying and last year was in Colombia doing research...tired now so may stick around for a while. Actually this Christmas I spent a whole month in Winterpeg which was wonderful!

The scan thing...I had a scan at 8,4 weeks in Colombia and they made me have a full bladder and sit around freezing cold in a hallway while waiting for someone to show up, if it hadn't been for my partner cheering me up and racing me in the wheelchair they had plopped me into I would have gone crazy! My mum just told me she never had a scan (27 years ago) and doesn't want me to have another one here but they didn't give me anything to show the dr. here and all they said was "development is fine, is at 8,4 weeks" and that was it! I had been in the hospital 10 hours, just found out I was pregnant and was hungry, tired and cold so I guess I was hoping for a more positive and planned experience

hannahmary · 21/08/2007 13:59

oh yes...what do widwives do? is it like your contact person instead of the dr?

yardette · 21/08/2007 14:03

Hi all
Papaya - your doctor is being an arse. Honestly, the NHS is so annoying. Hope you get seen to, privately or not. I'm sure it is just a case of too much rumpy pumpy tho...

Timmy - you poor thing having to worry about this, but as you say you've got 43 chances out of 44 that everything is okay. Fingers, legs and everything crossed for you, and sending positive vibes your way.

HolidaysQueen - I get this too, and have told myself not to worry. I get intermittent twinges from time to time, but if I ever sneeze or cough I get a stab/pulling type pain down one side (not necessarily the same). Had it since the beginning, and reckon it must be due to stretching. Read it up in a few books as well, who all said it was normal. Get yourself that cuppa and bar of chocolate love.

Brazilian, Imjin, and all others who've had your scans - congratulations on your scans!
xx

e14mum · 21/08/2007 15:01

HQ- I get that sometimes when I cough laying down. Then I move positions and cough again and it doesn't happen. Hope you had a nice cuppa!

glammamarjoram- I am indeed in E14 and I'm going to be at the Royal London too for scans and such- but hoping to go to the new TH Birthing Centre opening in December. Have you heard of it?

derah · 21/08/2007 16:53

Hannah - in the UK, doctors don't have much to do with pregnancy or childbirth (thank goodness!!) and you'll be taken care of almost 100% by midwives. Your local GP clinic should have a midwife who will see you thoughout your pregnancy. Or if you're getting your antenatal care through a hospital, the maternity unit will have a team of midwives and you will see them for your appointments. Doctors just can't be trusted with babies and pregnant women (as evidenced by the crap treatment so many of us on here have had from our doctors) so it's great that we have midwives instead!

victoriagirl · 21/08/2007 17:22

Haven't posted for a couple of weeks as have felt too sick. Just got back from our 12 week scan and found out why- we are expecting identical twins!! Read one of the posts this morning when someone wondered about twins. Never in a million years expected to see two little things in there! And identical- it doesn't run in the family. They also revised my due date to 29/2, but if all goes well, would be delivered several weeks before then anyway. But hope its okay if stick with this thread as am the people on the other thread would be much further along than me.

derah · 21/08/2007 17:32

Ooh, Victoria, our first twins! How scary and exciting for you. Of course you should stay here....

winemakesmummyclever · 21/08/2007 17:45

Wow VictoriaGirl! Hope you are feeling better and over the moon about your pair of beans! Will be honest and say, I really don't want to see two little fellas on the screen next week . Just one healthy little jumping bean will be enough.

MerlinsBeard · 21/08/2007 18:02

victoria, congratulations oin your double beans (god i hate that word but have found myself using more often now)

Do you have children already?

victoriagirl · 21/08/2007 18:19

Thanks for your messages. We are still in shock and cacking ourselves. These will be our first children, but we had always been adamant that we would only have one- guess that isn't our destiny!! But we do also realise it is a higher risk pregnancy- so twice as many things to worry about as before as well as things particular to twins. Great. Was amazing the way everything started happening so quickly as soon as the pictures came up on the screen. Funnily I have twin nephews so have a fairly good idea of the nightmare/pleasure ahead of us! But the twins were IVF so not natural twins. We really don't have natural twins in our side of the family (and I thought it was the female side they come from). Dp's side is full of twins. I think I'll blame him!

imjin100 · 21/08/2007 18:20

our first twins, I feel myself taking great pride in everyone's pregnancy so delighted - and identical - goodness me! Well done you guys, and how terrifying too. Hope you're doing ok, and you should definitely stay here. There seem to be a few of us who are officially 29th Feb but sticking here, i'm keeping my due date as 1st march, if not later so we don't get harrassed by eager family and friends at the time.

I'm smiling just at the thought of how it must have felt seeing two jumping beans....nature - the miracle continues!

HolidaysQueen · 21/08/2007 18:28

Yay victoriagirl! So excited for you!

I think fraternal twins run in the female side because they develop when two eggs are released and that can be genetic and is clearly all down to the woman, but I think identical twins are a bit more caused by chance as it is just about whether the embryo splits or not and that can be because of either the egg or the sperm or just something that occurs when the two come together.

There are fraternal twins in two places on my side, so my parents are expecting twins from me... I think we'd think it was fab but be absolutely petrified at the same time!

cricri · 21/08/2007 18:47

Congratulations on your twins Victoriagirl!
DH's mum is a twin so we keep joking that we could have them, but like you I think we'll be cacking ourselves if we see two of them on the screen at the scan. 3 weeks to wait...
There seems to be a lot of support for multiple births (websites etc) but I can imagine that it feels really daunting at the moment! I can barely get used to the idea of one, never mind two.
We'll all be following your progress with interest!

HolidaysQueen · 21/08/2007 19:39

Thanks yardette and e14 mum - I went off and had a cuppa and choccie instead of worrying

glammarjoram · 21/08/2007 22:05

Evening all,
Hurray, twins! That is so exciting victoria. E14, I'm very pleased to have a local mumsnetter as I don't know anyone else in rl who is pregnant. I have heard of the birthing centre, at the Barkantine. Sadly, my midwife has ruled me out as my labour with my daughter in 2000 was rather long and stressful in the transition phase and I have a retroverted uterus and cervix. Plus, you can't get an epidural at the birthing centre and right now, that's top of my wish list!
I was thinking that London mumsnetters on this thread should perhaps meet up for a nice piece of cake in a few weeks. What do people think? Obviously , due to my, ahem, diet, I will only be looking at the cake (although I have just snaffled a meringue- they're just air really )

turtle23 · 22/08/2007 07:18

Victoriagirl...congratulations!! I have to admit I'm jealous, have always wanted twins!
Did somebody mention cake? Me! I'm in!

c4it · 22/08/2007 09:12

Hi All, scan went ok - only 1 thank goodness. They have revised my edd to 22 March so I'm now 9+4.

Brazilianmum - I'm o neg too. You do not have to have the anti D - it only becomes an issue if you have a bleed during your pg (in which case they would give you the anti D then) and at birth, when they can test the baby and give the anty D if necessary (ie if the baby is possive). I was luck with DD as she is also o neg therefore no need for injection at all. I will be asking not to have inj again this time unless needed. Its up to you.

c4it · 22/08/2007 09:15

BTW is anyone else on this thread based in Yorkshire?

derah · 22/08/2007 10:11

I'm sure there was something very important I wanted to talk to you ladies about this morning but my brain has turned to swiss cheese and darned if I can remember what it was. Much like how I poured my OJ into my cereal bowl instead of my glass this morning. D'oh!

e14mum · 22/08/2007 11:31

Hooray for 1 set of twins!

I'm totally up for a London meeting. I work in Central London and live in East London, so am happy to meet anywhere. I will happily eat the cake too as long as nooone offers me coffee.

Glammarjoram- as a (naive?) first-timer, I really like the idea of the birthing centre if I can go there, but I am keeping a very open mind because I am quite aware that I may change my mind and put epidural at the top of my list too!

Were you at RL for your first?

It's only 11:30, and I'm so hungry! Hope you're all having a good morning.

glammarjoram · 22/08/2007 11:54

I really should be working but this is so much more interesting.
E14, I had my daughter at the Homerton as I was living in Hackney at the time. So this is my first experience of RLH. I agree, an open mind is very important. My birth plan for DD involved no drugs and the birthing pool. Ended up having tens, gas and air, pethidine annd an epidural along with syntocin to speed things up a bit. I would love to think I could rely on my inner strength to get me through but I'm not so sure. Let's have this conversation a bit later on!!
I work in E14 at the Town Hall but I travel around TH every day for my job. I actually live next door to the RLH so it is very handy. Actually there is a rather nice cake shop and a new coffee shop with Movenpick ice cream next door to the hospital on New Road. Can you tell why my midwife has said I need to go on a diet?
In terms of meeting up there is a very nice patisserie in Islington and west london called Ottolenghi. yummy
Otherwise, any other ideas are welcome.

derah · 22/08/2007 12:43

Ah, I've remembered now.... I wanted to tell you about my inspired idea this morning. When I went mad on eBay buying elasticated trousers, they're mostly cropped ones and the few longer pairs I got didn't fit. So I don't have any comfy long trousers and it's COLD today. So I put on my old stretch cords, which are wonderfully comfy otherwise but too tight in the waist now. Then I tied a piece of elastic through the button hole in a circle, and looped it around the button. Also left my zip a bit down, and suddenly my trousers fit again! I have to wear a long-ish top over them but thought I'd share this short-term solution to tight waistbands!!

timmyinatizzy · 22/08/2007 12:59

Congratulations Victoriagirl. You'll have so much fun with identical twins. I've got twin id step daughters. They are utterly gorgeous. Just don't do what their mum did, and dress them alike for the first 6 years of their life. They need to develop their own personality. They have to wear the same school uniform at school so why make them wear the same at home. Even now the mum gets confused when looking at old photos and can't tell them apart!

MerlinsBeard · 22/08/2007 13:01

ah derah thats what i did in all my pg's

hair bobbles work better as if they snap it hurts less! if you get a boob tube you can wear that over the button holes, it does the same job as a belly belt

preggersagain · 22/08/2007 13:10

mom- i was just going to add the boob tube tip! i've already dug out various different coloured boob tubes for the next few months!
