Thought we had better start a new thread - wonder if we'll see some (more) babies arriving on this thread...

@thedust nice pushchair, hope they get the rain cover out to you soon.
We are planning on trying out cloth nappies (much to my mother's horror). We have a couple of starter packs of different brands. What types do you have and in what quantities? Please let us know how your nappy library meeting goes, I've just checked and it's a bit of a drive to our local one so would love to hear how your experience is.

Have a lovely long weekend all 😎

thedust · 25/05/2019 07:34

@twickersmumtobe I've got a right mixture because I've heard different types work better for different babies so it's a bit trial and error. I initially got the bambino mio ones Aldi sold earlier this year, I've got 14 of those. They are birth to potty, but then I read they may be too big for newborns. So then I got a mixture - a 2nd hand set of 10 close newborn pop-ins off.ebay, 5 baba & boo newborns and 6 little lamb newborns (a mix of bamboo and microfibre). I've just ordered some more baba & boo ones in some nice prints they didn't have when I made the first order. I think it might be enough now...

The Nappy Lady group on Facebook is really good too for any queries.

Giraffe888 · 25/05/2019 13:49

Are any of you going to nhs ante-natal classes? Did you with your 1st?

We’re booked to go next Saturday but unsure whether to bother. My best friend was telling me this morning that she thought it was a waste of time when she went and didn’t learn anything she didn’t already know.

Both DH & I have a lot of experience with babies, I read all sorts online daily and don’t feel there’s anything in particular I really want to gain from going x

Capybaras · 25/05/2019 17:53

We've been going to hypnobirthing classes (offered by NHS). We were advised by the midwife that as we are going to these we don't need to do the antenatal classes, however we've found out that what to do when the baby gets here/breastfeeding isn't included in hypnobirthing and now we're too late to book on to the antenatal classes! Found the hypnobirthing really good though and feel we've got a good grasp of it now from the classes and positive birth company etc! Just need to find out how you care for a baby...

Don't think that really answered your question but maybe if you feel you know a lot about birth/caring for baby then it isn't worth your time!

twickersmumtobe · 25/05/2019 23:04

@thedust - wow you have a really good selection there, we have 2 different types, but just trial packs so not enough to get us through fully, I thought we will try it out and buy a few others based on what works for us and baby. I will definitely try put the nappy lady Facebook group, thanks for the recommendation.

@Giraffe888 - I've not done the nhs antenatal classes, but a friend of mine did, she said it was helpful reminder of what happens when you arrive at hospital and how they deal with you.

@Capybaras - we've been looking at getting the online hypnobirthing package from the positive birth company, is this what you did? do you recommend it? For breast feeding support / advice our hospital does a separate, free, session on infant feeding, we've not done ours yet (they recommend from 32 weeks) but might be worth looking into.

TwinkleDay · 26/05/2019 04:32

Thanks for those with the - you need a fit note to work the last 28days - advice.

Well I rang the gp and they said that they don't get involved with any of the pregnancy ask the midwife. Spoke
To the midwife and they don't do sick/fit notes... yes it's not a legal requirement either I work in the kitchen on a factory site so thats a n active job but I only have 6 days left!

I keep waking up around 3am for a while and baby is very very active . Anyone else ? It's like my body is preparing me for broken sleep!

Going to play with pram today as
When it was delivered last week mum and dad took it straight to there's as it's 'bad luck' to have it in the house ... what a joke . What if your on baby number 2 ffs

Yukka · 26/05/2019 08:56

Morning, @thedust and @twickersmumtibe on the nappies we’ve decided to stay with disposable ones but found a brand called kit an kin that are all non chemical and biodegrade in 2-5 yrs, unlike pampers that biodegrade in 500 years ...I think some mums are using these alongside cloth ones when convenience calls for it. They do other environmentally clean products too, wet wipes etc

@Giraffe888 we’ve done a private antenatal class and it’s all been about the birth, natural vs high risk, pain relief etc, everything I’ve read in books... next week is last session so hoping to learn a bit more about the first few hours and days.

@twinkleday yes work are totally in the wrong there. You should remind your boss about pregnancy discrimination...I had the 3am wriggles for weeks and weeks, and its just calmed down in the last two weeks I think because baby is running out of space and sleeping pattern is starting to join mine. Enjoy 😩

thedust · 26/05/2019 13:33

I've got a few disposables for those first few days/weeks but one of the bonuses for us of using cloth is not having a wheelie bin full of smelly nappies when we only have fortnightly collections. I know that's something my sister struggled with and I see my neighbour always has an overflowing bin too. Also the cost saving in the long run, I don't want to be having to add nappies onto my grocery bill every week. Of course we are fortunate in that we can afford to invest in the cloth nappies now, I know that puts some people off trying them. But even using 1 cloth nappy a day can make a big difference!

We've done NCT antenatal classes. Out next session is on breastfeeding which I'm hoping will be useful. The NHS ones were weekly and midweek evenings which just weren't convenient for us. It has been useful, yesterday we went through what happens in a cesarean birth and lots of stuff about risks/benefits of interventions which I hadn't read about. Lots of us to discuss with regards to the birth plan and birth preferences.

cravingmilkshake · 26/05/2019 13:58

Hi all, just tested our pram and it is all up and running! Will try out the car seat this afternoon as that is still boxed! X

I want to give cloth nappies a try but DH thinks it's too much faff. Although we've just had a sort out of the nursery to try and find homes for things and he seemed to have a moment of realisation of how many nappies we're going to go through and that despite buying quite a few packs already they will barely last us a month!

We've really enjoyed NCT - we've got one more session left to go which is covering practical baby care. The breastfeeding session in particular was very informative and it wasn't as pushy about breast is best as I thought and heard it could be - she covered the essentials but it was more on feeding in general and what to look out for if baby isn't getting enough and so on. I've also found that although the initial sessions were about 'natural' birth, there has been decent amount of time spent on inductions, assisted delivery and c-sections too.

So a while back I found out about a friend trying to plan a surprise baby shower and it did get scaled down quite a bit- well today was the day and it was really lovely. My three best friends and their babies/toddlers and just chatting about all sorts over afternoon tea. Then spent the rest of the afternoon sorting through a whole load of stuff one friend has given us so think we're pretty much set... 34 weeks on Tuesday! And only four days of work to go! Roll on June!!

Hope everyone is having a fab bank holiday! Love seeing all the prams! We went for the Joie Chrome Dlx in Cranberry. Can't seem to attach a photo using the app though unfortunately!

TwinkleDay · 27/05/2019 11:41

Loving all the prams! We're going to hold off on getting ours out for a couple more weeks because we're still having some work done and I don't want it absorbing dust. Exciting to see them all on here!

Jxtina86 I remember the whole baby shower saga! I'm glad you had a lovely time.

Finally found a bit of time to look into cord blood donation. In case anyone is interested - private donation (to me) isn't really that useful, yet expensive, donation to NHS (again to me) seems very much worth it and saves lives. You can still do it if you opt for delayed cord clamping or an ELCS or whatever. But you have to be in one of the following hospitals - Barnet General Hospital, Luton & Dunstable Hospital, Watford General Hospital, St George’s Hospital and University College Hospital. If interested you need to go on the NHS Blood and Transplant Service website and do a short form (comes with Q&A to read so you can give informed consent). Then they visit you before you give birth on the day you arrive for the birth to have a chat, and collect the stuff after the birth. You can change your mind at any time too, incl just before they do it.

Perhaps controversially, bought some dummies today. I know they are to be used sparingly and can be a problem to take away, but I'd rather have a couple in the house than not in case things get very desperate. Seemed sensible to her a niplle shaped "orthodontic" one and a cherry shaped one, which is a bit fuller and might not fall out as easily. But what do I know, last time I used a dummy was on my doll aged about 5! 😂

StargazyDrifter · 27/05/2019 17:39

Also, a big wave at Kentishgal who should be coming to the end of a long weekend with her in-laws. Hope you're feeling better too! Almost there! 🍰🍇😁

BeckyButterfly · 27/05/2019 20:37

@TwinkleDay my friend who had her baby in March has that pram and she absolutely loves it! 🙂

BeckyButterfly · 27/05/2019 20:38

This is our pram. We've had it sat on our landing for months now! 😂

Oh, they did attach. Sorry for spamming the feed there guys! 😂

Kentishgal · 27/05/2019 21:01

Lovely to see the prams!! Thank you stargazydrifter but actually my husband cancelled them because I was so poorly last week. Feeling better now but still got a hacking cough / snotty etc. Unfortunately they're now coming down on 7 June instead! I know my husband is looking forward to seeing them but I just absolutely dread it! Hope everyone had a lovely bank holiday weekend? Still got another 6 weeks left at work - I kind of feel like I've finished already though because my heart is definitely no longer in it!

@BeckyButterfly your pram is lovely, but also... what shade of yellow paint is that? I tried for ages to find a nice shade failed. Yours is gorgeous!

BeckyButterfly · 27/05/2019 23:12

Thanks @DianaBlythe! It's the Valspar paint you get from BBQ, the one they make up in store. It was pretty expensive but I love it! I can't remember what the shade was called 😕

BeckyButterfly · 27/05/2019 23:13

I've just asked the hubby and for some reason he remembers it was called ochre mountain (he thinks!)

blueeyedviking · 28/05/2019 07:34

Morning all
Lovely to see all pram photos! My DH was playing with it yesterday saying that he loves the suspension on it... 🙄
I'm back from a weekend away to celebrate the DMIL bday in France. Was lovely but super tiring. SIL etc where there too and although a great few days it was so loud and shouty (kids on too much sugar). My back is getting worse so I'm really glad I'm off work now. Housewife it is!

Only 6 weeks to go now 🙈

cravingmilkshake · 28/05/2019 09:04

Morning all!

Any tips on how to get the baby's foot out from under my ribs/ that's what I am assuming it is- so very painful!

StargazyDrifter · 28/05/2019 14:23

Kentishgal glad you've had a bit of a break. Perhaps overall better to have them over pre-baby, silver lining? Totally with you and blueeyedviking on finding things tiring, even social things. I'm a bit of a hermit at the best of times, and really need "down time" sometimes, but pregnancy seems to have made this more so.

I accidentally clicked on the June thread earlier today, not long til we're talking about final appointments and pre-ELCS consultations. 😬

cravingmilkshake I've read online something about getting on all fours and crawling backwards, but then my baby moved so I didn't research whether there's any actual truth or benefit to this. Maybe a bath, too? Just thinking about water in and out of the belly... though I'm no physicist!

Kentishgal · 28/05/2019 14:44

stargazydrifter I know I should look on the bright side...but it's the in-laws...😂 I've been reading the June thread too (not accidentally) - babies all arriving v early! blueeyedviking can you treat yourself to a pregnancy massage to try and help relax your back? - otherwise put your feet up and enjoy the peace!
