Hello mums-to-be!

I'm Kate, and I'm looking for a generous London-based pregnant woman who may be interested in helping me with my infant observation course, taken with the British Psychotherapy Foundation, by allowing me to observe her & her baby for an hour once a week from birth up until his or her second birthday (excluding holidays). Day-to-day I am a therapeutic practitioner in Great Ormond Street Hospital, but I would be coming to your house as a student and learner about baby development.

Offering to be an observation family is a very generous gesture and many mothers find this to be a rewarding experience. Beyond agreeing to a regular, weekly time-slot of one hour, there are no obligations on your end and baby and family are encouraged to continue about their ordinary lives during these hours.

If you are interested in helping me, I would really love to hear from you! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you!

Kate

How is everyone doing?

December2019 · 01/10/2019 13:26

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver hey there momma!
I'm good, just really tired & sluggish at the mo, I have been feeling really emotional too lol crying all the time 😂
I have my 28 week midwife appointment tomorrow can't believe how quick the days are moving! 1st October came round quick
How are you doing?

JayDot500 · 01/10/2019 14:32

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver I hope you're well, and I hope all the mummy's here are happily getting through the days and weeks. You've given me license to have a good moan Grin

30 weeks now and my body is suffering. I think I have SPD and honestly my days if finding any comfortable position is over until I birth this kid. I've begun to wake during the night to pee and turning in the bed is the worst! I've got a fairly active job and I'm having to take breaks due to breathlessness. I'm very lucky I have a forgiving team.

Baby seems fine, very active and yesterday DS felt it kick me. He said 'mummy does the baby hurt you?' and I said no since I don't want him to think badly of it. It does blooming hurt at times. He found the kicks funny afterwards though and the bond is forging hopefully

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 01/10/2019 14:49

Thanks @JayDot500 and @December2019 I'm ok, I'm technically due the end of November which is now next month, freaking out a bit. I joined this thread as I was sure I would be overdue with this being my first and I would have a December baby but they want to discuss induction so November might be more likely.

@JayDot500 that does sound like SPD, I've had it from 10 weeks. Try sleeping with a couple of pillows between your legs, one at your knees and another near your ankles so that your hips and knees can't turn out. I also have another under my waist to help keep my spine aligned a bit better. You can get support belts just make sure you get one the right size or it will make things much much worse. I was also told not to hoover and the motion makes things worse. If you can ask to be referred to physio, we can self refer, they have loads of good tips and managed to put a bit of my pelvis back where it came from which made a great difference.

JayDot500 · 01/10/2019 15:06

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver Thank you! I'm due early December but i too could end up having a November baby! The thought of this being over next month is a good one, although I've got none of the baby goods I need!

I need to get better at having a pillow between my legs. I have a support belt but it's so tight I don't want to risk it being the wrong size. I've been so casual about it but I do think I should go see my GP about a physio referral. I have my midwife appointment this Wednesday so might be able to get something sorted that way.

Sorry to any woman here who is suffering this/other ailments too. The finish line is not far ahead!

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 02/10/2019 12:53

I know some ladies on here have had babies before. I've been asked by the hospital to take part in a research trial. They're looking at the outcomes of early induction vs normal care in relation to women having big babies. I'm not sure what to do to be honest? Does anyone have any experience?

Funnybunnyfluff · 02/10/2019 14:36

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver

Interesting you say that while I was waiting to see the consultant last week the two women in front of me where approached about the same thing... I was never asked and I was thinking in my head what would I say.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 02/10/2019 17:44

@Funnybunnyfluff I'm just not sure what would be for the best? I've been in pain with SPD for months but it feels selfish to agree to a possible induction if he'd be better off if I waited? Also I know induction is often a lot more intense.

smitch82 · 03/10/2019 08:40

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver My midwife told me that they are doing a study on babies/mums measuring in the 95th percentile. It is called the big baby experiment, which she said was a bad name!

I am measuring around 50% at the moment but my sister in law is measuring 4 weeks ahead at the moment!

How is everyone doing? I am having a really good pregnancy so fingers crossed it continues. Since having iron tablets I am now less tired as I was anemic which I didn't realise. I am having pain in my bum at night which is weird, but my new pillow is really helping. Anyone who is suffering the BBhugme pillow is expensive but I think totally worth it!!

CourgetteAndCrisps · 03/10/2019 08:59

@smitch82 I've got that pillow too! It's worth every penny. I took it to my mums house on a recent trip home and she ended up buying one too 😂

Lovely to hear that you're feeling less sleepy and things are going smoothly. I'm also in a similar boat. Are you doing any preggo yoga for aches and pains? I started several weeks ago and it helped hugely. Xx

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 03/10/2019 11:01

@smitch82 thank you! I saw a poster when I was at the hospital last but it didn't say much. They're sending me out some info and I have an appointment with my midwife today so I'll speak to her and see what she says. I'm obviously getting impatient to meet him but I don't want to rush into doing the wrong thing.

aliensprig · 03/10/2019 16:52

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver I think I am having a relatively easy time of it, though people keep telling me I'm big for 27 weeks which isn't worrying at all Hmm it's like, erm I KNOW I'm big, none of my clothes fit!! Sad still, we bought a pram finally so I don't have to cry on the phone to Mothercare again!

aliensprig · 03/10/2019 16:59

Is there a private MN FB group for this chat by any chance? Think I'd find it easier to follow as I'm always forgetting to catch up on this one!

smitch82 · 04/10/2019 05:12

@CourgetteAndCrisps I have been doing yoga and Pilates alongside aqua aerobics for the past few months to help. Think I just need to do more at home too!

I am back home and couldn't fit the pillow in my suitcase (I am on the train so packing light) I miss it soooo much!! My husband is happy though he gets to sleep with it!

zlargeIO · 05/10/2019 10:27

Hi there,

I hope this message isn't again the rules of the thread - please feel free to delete if so.

I am a student in South East London, studying child development as part of a Masters at the British Psychotherapy Foundation (jointly run with Birkbeck). Part of my training involves learning about the very beginnings of human life by observing an infant once a week at a regular time, within a normal family setting.

I am currently looking for a baby to begin observing in November/ December and would be very glad to hear from anyone who is interested in hearing more. I have an enhanced DBS check and would be able to put you in touch with my course leaders.

The aim of the observation is to learn about how a newborn baby comes to relate to its surroundings. Taking part would involve weekly visits for an hour, over a period of about 18 months, ideally at a regular time (although of course this could be changed during holiday periods or when important things come up).

The only requirements during the visits would be that your baby is at home with you or another adult when I visit - my aim would be to act as unobtrusively as possible so that you can get on with family life, so you could generally behave more or less as you would if I wasn't there.

Any notes I write would be made after I leave, and I would remove any identifying details before sharing reflections on the observation for course purposes. All details would be fully confidential.

I live in Camberwell and would be able to visit anywhere within travelling distance of London. If you are potentially interested in taking part or have any questions, please do get in touch and perhaps we can arrange a time to speak further. Thanks so much for reading.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 05/10/2019 11:01

@aliensprig being big doesn't necessarily mean a big baby though. My bump has actually shrunk this week, he's turned back to back. He used to be butt out. He is however giant. I'm freaking out but no decisions can be made until after my next growth scan and consultant appointment which is the 24th. I'd been keeping on top of my anxiety quite well but it's spiralled out of control in the last few weeks. I tried to tell my midwife I wasn't coping but she kind of dismissed me and said everything will be fine which actually want all that helpful.
I'm glad you got your pram, it was one of the first things we did so we have a huge list of things we haven't done but that's not one of them haha.

MissingCoffeeandWine · 07/10/2019 18:59

Hi all,
Hope everyone’s as well as can be?

@aliensprig I hear you re the big comments but I’ve the opposite! I’ve had HG and been so unwell I’ve not put on much weight and EVERYONE comments on how small I am. I’m all bump, and little one is growing fine, but it activates all my worries...I hate it nearly as much as the un-asked for touching!!

I’d also love to know if there is a Facebook group still going? Know there was one in the early days but I didn’t feel ready to join it then!

Due mid-dec and after several MC’s finally starting to believe this one is real and getting excited! Still have to purchase everything though! Anyone going to the baby show in London on the 19th/20th?

MissingCoffeeandWine · 07/10/2019 19:01

Oh and I’m also now googling those pillows and REALLY want one. The hip pain of third trimester is not fun. I’ve been living in my bath most evenings!

DamnitCharlie · 08/10/2019 02:09

I'm late to the party, I'm due Dec 23rd with my second. How prepared is everyone feeling? I have a spare room full of baby stuff from the loft but I can barely even get into the room as I just have bags and bags everywhere! I wanted to be more clutter free this time around but it's not happening!

Anyone getting their hospital bags ready or car seats in the car yet? I'm scared of being induced early as I'm having growth scans so want everything ready soon.

December2019 · 08/10/2019 08:53

@DamnitCharlie your my due date buddy! 😊 and it's my little boys 1st birthday too
I've got a clutter room instead of a nursery lol I have started on the painting though (well my DP has I stood and watched) 😂

Funnybunnyfluff · 08/10/2019 10:29

I love the royal "we" 😂!

We have a clutter room also. I think end of this month will get things out the box that leave us 6 weeks.

Scares me thought as my aunt had both her girls 6 weeks early.

December2019 · 08/10/2019 10:52

@Funnybunnyfluff I'd maybe get stuff out early just to be on the safe side 😂
I've got a feeling I won't make my due date and I'm also quietly hoping I go a couple of days early.. as far away from Christmas as possible would be nice 👍

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 08/10/2019 11:25

Glucose tolerance test 2 done. Let's see what they say. I really should get my hospital bag sorted. All you organised people are giving me the fear a wee bit.

DamnitCharlie · 08/10/2019 11:51

I have stood and watched my partner do lots of diy and painting as well! 😆 We aren't touching the nursery but did move our almost 2 year old into a different bedroom that needed sprucing up. Now it's down to me to unpack and wash all the clothes and stuff 🙄 Need another mad nesting urge.
