designerbaby - not sure about the stretchmarks, I was extremely lucky not to have a single one with ds1, am now 27 weeks in on this one and still none

muppetgirl · 02/07/2007 11:54

Hi db
I was secretly smug about my lack of stretch marks on ds1 right up until 34-35 weeks (I think) but my appendix scar had other ideas!!! One started then a whole load joined in and then it did look like a network of motorways on my tummy. Also then around my tummy button started showing stretch marks, and underneath my boobs I found when I stopped b/f. They have/had gone silver but even though I went back down to my size 10 (nearly 8 last year with pnd) I still had to tuck my tummy in when I was wearing, say, jeans....

I think I hate them more than dh does he doesn't seem to mind and points out that I've had a baby what should I expect? (He is of the ilk that when I worry about getting my hair cut he alsways says -why? It'll grow back.....)

He did rub cream into my tummy everyday for months before and it still didn't work....

BUT you may be one of the lucky ones who just don't get stretch marks

designerbaby · 02/07/2007 12:00

Ahh... well I think the general consensus is "wait and see..." and not to get to smug 'until the fat lady sings' - or screams obscenities (as I'm sure I will...)

I heard these things are hereditary, which probably means 'll be struck eventually...

I know babies already - and I don't have a single item of baby stuff. Not so much as a nappy...

S**t...

BTW if I was to post my shopping list for this weekend, would some of you second (or more) timers let me know if there's anything I've missed or anything that's on there which is completely useless?

Er... it's quite a LONG list...

DB

MrsFish · 02/07/2007 12:03

Go for it. #

Oh and regards the hereditary bit, my mum is covered in stretchmarks on her belly, but as of yet I don't have any

lisad123 · 02/07/2007 12:04

designer if you want to post your list, do it, it will give me something to do

lisad123 · 02/07/2007 12:17

Any newborn toys?
Change bag
do i see nappy wraps on your list?

I think you are pretty much set.

Lisa

MrsFish · 02/07/2007 12:22

Blimey - I forgot how stuff you need

I would add Infacol - if baby is colicky give before every feed, it helps

Other than that it looks like you have everything covered.

Mumpbump · 02/07/2007 12:23

Okay - am putting my comments where not necessary or purchase can be deferred next to the items on the list...

Clothes (in newborn size):
6 vests
6 sleepsuits
6 onesies (daytime babygrows with feet)
2 cardigans/jumpers
3 lightweight tops
2 pairs of scratch mits - Wait to see if you need these. We never did with ds.
1 Bunting with attached gloves - don't know what this is!
2 hats - wait to see how big babies' head is - I'm not joking either! Newborn headgear tends to be REALLY small
6 bibs - not really necessary until you're weaning if you get muslins
1 coat - wouldn't bother if you're getting a snowsuit
Snowsuit - wait to see size/rate of growth of baby and how cold it gets how soon
6 pairs of bootees or socks - wouldn't bother if all your babygrows have feet
Muslin squares
Muslin cloths (bigger than muslin squares?)
Terry toweling square nappies
Sleepsack - do you mean grobag? You might want to think about swaddling with a cellular blanket for the first couple of months...

Changing:
Dispoable nappies - 2 packs in new born size
Cloth nappies
Nappy liners
Fragrance free baby wipes
Cotton wool
Nappy sacks/bags - not strictly necessary. We folded ours up into little parcels which keeps the smell in and bf nappies aren't that offensive. We just use carrier bags to bag up offensive nappies.
Nappy rash balm/cream
Nappy pail
Nappy bag - do you mean changing bag? You can manage with a normal bag, but good excuse for a nice accessory!

Equipment:
Travel system (which lies flat)
Car seat (part of travel system?)
Baby Carrier/Sling (baby bjorn?)
Cot/cotbed
Moses basket?
Travel cot
Mattress
2/3 Waterproof mattress covers
Bouncy chair
Chest of drawers
Changing table
Change pad
Wardrobe
Toy box/chest - can be deferred
Flat sheet - get fitted sheets instead
3/4 Fitted cribsheets
3/4 light/midweight blankets - not necessary if you get a grobag.
2 heavyweight blankets - I would put two light blankets on and not use heavyweight at all.
Baby Monitors (movement monitor?)
Cot mobile
Car seat mobile
Long (5ft pillow)
Baby thermometer

Feeding:
Breast pump (Medela Swing?) - wait to see how you get on with bf. Expressing is not easy!
Bottles,
Teats for new born,
Steriliser
Bottle brush
Poss combined in: Avent bottle/breast feeding package - includes bottles, teets, steriliser, cups, spoons, dummies, bottle warmer, descaler, bottle brushes perfect for expressing??

Bathing:
Baby Bath
2 Soft Washcloths
2 Terrycloth towels with hood
Mild Soap and Shampoo
Baby Oil - I would get almond oil to apply to dry skin. 100% natural with no additives
Baby Comb and Brush
Baby Nail Scissors - definitely - their nails grow surprisingly quickly...

For mum:
3 Nursing bras
Maxi pads
Ice packs
Nipple cream
Few boxes of breast pads (tommee tippee?)
Nursing tops
4 packs of maternity pads

I would also get lavender and tea tree oil to add to bathwater and promote healing plus arnica tablets to help with bruising. Other than that, looking pretty good!

muppetgirl · 02/07/2007 12:26

What about a couple of cartons of milk just in case?

Did I see dummies? Always good to have even if you don't intend on using. You never know how you'll feel at 3 in the morning!

OP posts:
lisad123 · 02/07/2007 12:27

forgot baby themometer (i cant spell).

Mumpbump · 02/07/2007 12:27

Oh - I don't think you need a wardrobe. Baby stuff is so small, a chest of drawers is more than adequate.

muppetgirl · 02/07/2007 12:31

The best thing that was ever given to me was a sheepskin. (yes really!)

I used to put him on his front with a muslin cloth under his head, just in his nappy and he LOVED the feel of the soft sheepskin against his body. He used to wiggle his feet into it and work his fingers into it too. If dc messes it it can go in the wash (on a wool wash!!) and as long as you brish the wool it dies last.

I will definately get another one for ds2.

I agree about the wardrobe...We just bought a chest of drawers and that did.

OP posts:
muppetgirl · 02/07/2007 12:33

'.....and as long as you brish the wool it dies last'
wtf!?!?

It's already dead!!

Sorry I meant brush and does

OP posts:
designerbaby · 02/07/2007 12:33

Muppet - do you mean formula milk or ordinary milk so DH can make me a nice cuppa when we get woken up!?

muppetgirl · 02/07/2007 12:36

What am i on today?????

Sorry I meant formula -I know you want to breast feed but i am a firm believer in being prepared.

...and no I was never a girl guide, scout, cub or anything my friends were...

alicet · 02/07/2007 12:41

Db ? I never had stretch marks with ds1 and don?t have any yet this time either. Think genetics has a lot to do with it ? my mum didn?t get them either ? but I use bio oil on my bump every night to try and ward them off!

I have cut and pasted your shopping list in and will add my comments ? hope they?re helpful!

Clothes (in newborn size): I wouldn?t buy any clothing in any other sizes (unless your baby is predicted to be huge) as you will be gobsmacked at how much you are given!
6 vests ? would say 6 is min. Fine to start with and you may be fine if your baby isn?t sick a lot. Can always send dh out for more if needed!
6 sleepsuits
6 onesies (daytime babygrows with feet) - I never got these. Didn?t change ds out of his sleepsuit / vest combi for at least 4-6 weeks. Anyway someone will probably buy you newborn outfits so proba don?t need this ? you can always buy later
2 cardigans/jumpers
3 lightweight tops ? again not sure you need this ? see comment above
2 pairs of scratch mits
1 Bunting with attached gloves ? don?t know what this is?
2 hats
6 bibs ? I never used bibs for first few months. Just muslins. Most of my mates were the same
1 coat - I don?t think you need this as well as a snowsuit. Would def get that though!
Snowsuit - I bought 0-3 months thinking it would last longer. Don?t do this ? it was HUGE!!!
6 pairs of bootees or socks ? only if you?re getting outfits ? don?t bother if just going to use sleepsuits.
Muslin squares ? YES! Buy LOTS!!!!
Muslin cloths (bigger than muslin squares?) - not sure what the diff is. I bought some that were about 10 inches square. Don?t think you need diff size ones
Terry toweling square nappies ? are you using real nappies? I didn?t but I bought these anyway. Used wet cotton wool to clean his bum but dry cotton wool sticks. So I used these as his bum towels. Even if you have put these down for nappies I would get some for bum towels too.
Sleepsack ? I bought grobags (beware some are only for use from 10lbs) but didn?t use them at first. I used miracle blankets which is a kind opf technical swaddling blanket and it was FAB. Tiny babies love being swaddled (although not actually having it done if you see what I mean) as it gives them comfot and reminds them of being in the womb. Could just use a sheet but they get out of it. Can buy in mothercare. Whatever option you decide on buy 2 so you have 1 to use and 1 to wash

Changing:
Dispoable nappies - 2 packs in new born size
Cloth nappies
Nappy liners
Fragrance free baby wipes
Cotton wool
Nappy sacks/bags
Nappy rash balm/cream
Nappy pail ? I didn?t bother with this. Just took them out and put them in our wheely bin. Prob would make life easier but could do without if you wanted to save some pennies
Nappy bag

Equipment:
Travel system (which lies flat)
Car seat (part of travel system?) ? make sure it fits in your car ? get the shop (somewhere reliable like Mothercare / Halfords) to actually check it is safe and to show you how to do it.
Baby Carrier/Sling (baby bjorn?) - I had a baby bjorn ? you can get them pretty cheaply on ebay if you?re into that.
Cot/cotbed ? just something to think about ? we have just had to get ours for ds2 early (and might have been able to get ds1 into proper bed if not for this) because ours has fixed sides and with my bump I can?t now get him out of the cotbed!!! Drop sides are useful if you want another baby when your firs tis about 2 ? younger and you would need 2 cots anyway so irrelevant and older and they would prob be in a bed anyway. Not the biggest factor but worth baring in mind
Moses basket? ? we borrowed one
Travel cot ? wait and see if you will need it. If you get a pram with a carrycot this will do up till they are about 6 months so I wouldn?t buy one now unless you know you will need it asap
Mattress
2/3 Waterproof mattress covers ? didn?t bother with these.
Bouncy chair - get a vibrating one ? ds loved it and they?re not much more expensive. I would also get one with a head hugger as ours didn?t have one and he looked really uncomfy when he was tiny
Chest of drawers
Changing table
Change pad
Wardrobe
Toy box/chest ? could wait for later if you wanted to save time / money now.
Flat sheet
3/4 Fitted cribsheets ? can use these in the cot after so if lo vomits / leaks through onto bed you don?t have to change whole bed in middle of night
3/4 light/midweight blankets ? if you buy grobags or similar don?t think you would nee dthis many. I would go for 2 midweight ones personally and no others. Of you are using sheets / blankets of course this is different and then I have no idea how many are a good idea
2 heavyweight blankets
Baby Monitors (movement monitor?)
Cot mobile ? we got the tiny love one ? it was great. The fact that it is battery powered means it lasts for 15 mins. Which bought me time to go for a shower, to the loo etc while ds was happy
Car seat mobile ? again got tiny love one which has an attachment to put on pushchair to. Great buy
Long (5ft pillow)
Baby thermometer ? ours is a waste of money (got from argos). Its readings are so variable its pointless. I would get the strips you put against their forehead rather than fork out money on anything else

Feeding:
Breast pump (Medela Swing?) ? I had an avent isis uno battery / electric one. Its expensive but great. Most of my mates who started with hand pump ones upgraded to an electric one early on but I guess this depends on how flush you are after the rest of the list and how much you plan to express
Bottles,
Teats for new born,
Steriliser ? I would get a microwave one not an electric one. They are much faster and although they don?t take as many bottles the time to do the same number is less. Plus cheaper. Our electric one was a waste of money
Bottle brush
Poss combined in: Avent bottle/breast feeding package - includes bottles, teets, steriliser, cups, spoons, dummies, bottle warmer, descaler, bottle brushes perfect for expressing?? ? I would NOT get a bottle warmer. It was a waste of money. Boiling water in a flask with a pot to put the bottle in in their room can be as convenient and good. The bottle warmers don?t turn off when it reaches the right temp so carry on heating it up. So unless you are watching closely (they don?t have an alarm unless a new one has been invented!) the bottle can overheat massively and you are lulled into thinking it will be ok. Dangerous and pointless in my view but would be interested to hear what others think? Plus ds wasn?t bothered about having warm bottles anyway!!

Bathing:
Baby Bath
2 Soft Washcloths
2 Terrycloth towels with hood
Mild Soap and Shampoo ? not sure you need this to start (but no harm). I was told not to use anything other than water for first 6 weeks or so
Baby Oil
Baby Comb and Brush
Baby Nail Scissors
I would add a bath thermometer. Can get disc that sits in the bath while you?re filling it for about £3 in mothercare. Great for when your sleep deprived babybrain is incapable of rational thought!!

For mum:
3 Nursing bras
Maxi pads
Ice packs
Nipple cream ? LASINOH!!!! Marvellous stuff
Few boxes of breast pads (tommee tippee?) ? I found the washable avent ones more comfy and not that much hassle
Nursing tops
4 packs of maternity pads ? At least!!!!

Hope that is helpful ? remember just my experience so if I sound a bit like a dictator I don?t mean to!!!!!

Ejt ? good tip about word ? did that this time and its so much easier!!!

alicet · 02/07/2007 12:44

And just reading through other comments made while I was writing my mamoth post - if you want to be prepared get nipple shields. Bf hurts like mad and I got really grazed / cut nipples and was on the verge of giving up when I discovered these. Convinced he was latching on OK too. Since found out he had a tongue tie which often causes this prob....

They are cheap too so no harm having one pair in case....

alicet · 02/07/2007 12:44

Agree about wardrobe too

honeyapple · 02/07/2007 12:52

OMG that is the biggest list I have ever seen. Sorry... I feel like I am crashing the conversation cos I havent read it all.... but surely half of that is unneccesary?

alicet · 02/07/2007 12:52

Ditto the infacol! I would also get sudocrem but only a little pot as it lasts AGES!! I bought an enormous one and a little one for the change bag - will never get through it all unless I have about 10 children!!!

alicet · 02/07/2007 12:54

And looking back - I mean that flat crib sheets could be used after in big cot.

designerbaby · 02/07/2007 13:02

You guys are great - Alice & Mump that was awesome...

And no, I don't mind anyone being dictatorial - I haven't got a bloody clue so having people actually TELL you what to do rather than all this "see how you feel" "it's up to you" stuff is actually quite reassuring!

I was even starting to enjoy Gina Ford for exactly the same reason - but we're not allowed to talk about here on here, are we? .

Right going to copy and apste all that and add it to my "MASTER FILE" to review my list this evening...

HUGS to all you lovely people

DB

muppetgirl · 02/07/2007 13:06

I agree about the vests -you'll be amazed how many 'up the back' poos you can have!!

Ditto the muslin square, we didn't know what they were before we ds1!!! But we used them for EVERYTHING bibs, burping cloths, shoulder cloth, wiping cloths, even as a substitue nappy when we ran out. I now use all the old ones as they do get a bit manky as cleaning cloths in the house -3 years after I bought them.

Also don't buy to many newborn clothes, just stick to sleepsuits, until after little one has arrived. We did and ds1 was 9lb 1oz and was too big for a lot of the newborn stuff. I live very near an outlet centre so are currently buying sale stuff that's been reduced and reduced in 0-3months onwards and putting them in chest of drawers. Always good to have a little of the next size as we got the 'hang on, this fitted him yesterday!'

My little ds had very long legs and big feet and never fitted the right sized for his age babygrows. I should have cut the feet off (the babygrow, not ds!) and hemmed them as he never filled them so this time are buying a lot of feet less babygrows.

OP posts:
