@Badbadbeans if it feels tight and uncomfortable it quite likely is a BH. They’re not necessarily as strong as contractions so your uterus may still β€˜give a little’, unlike with a strong contraction. But it will feel a hell of a lot tighter/tenser than normal. Usually they last around/up to 60 seconds then relax again.

Loving the stories from those of you who already have kids. I was 6 when my brother was born and was convinced he would come out like a toddler that I could play with (like all of my other friends babies) and was so so so disappointed when he just slept all of the time. On the day we bought him back from the hospital I sat next to the moses basket for what felt like hours and then was like "well when is he going to DO something?! He's so boring!!" ... Which my mum frequently reminds us about.

@angelmiracle I recall waking up at about 5am to get my mum to the hospital and then we arrived at about 6am. My dad and I left pretty much as soon as we'd arrived as I had school but he was born before we got back home and my mum waited until she knew we'd be back to call, so the labour was very quick once she was at the hospital although I don't know how long she was doing it at home for... But I'd imagine she can't have felt she was that far along because she cut it so fine. Lots of my colleagues also had very quick births the subsequent times around... But everyone is different and they're more likely to tell you those kind of 'happy' birth stories than tell you they were at it for a really long time again.

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 16/01/2019 09:39

@cardboard33 I was a similar age when my sister was born so was exactly the same as you. I was really disappointed when I realised they didn't actually do anything. Apparently my mum went for a bath and came down and I was trying to teach a 2 month old how to pick her own nose... hopefully I'll find better things to teach this baby!

Sictransitgloria · 16/01/2019 13:00

Got a stinking cold and every time I sneeze my ribs hurt 😬 I haven’t been this sick in ages and it’s so annoying you can’t take anything. Just paracetamol and vicks atm. That combined with no sleep has been truly joyful.

SquirtlesMumAgain · 16/01/2019 13:31

DS asked me if baby was going to singing happy birthday to him in the car this morning!
If all goes to dates she will be less than a month old so to be fair if she isn't screaming at him it'll be a win!

We are going to buy a new sleepsuit for her with DS but not knowing if she is small or not means that will have to wait!

Was having fun planning my terms activities with my brownies this morning and realised I'm a bit scuppered come March! I could really do with her hanging on until her due date!

babycatcher411 · 16/01/2019 15:17

Own anyone else struggling to find a comfortable bra? It doesn’t seem to matter what style I go for, it feels saggy/hot/uncomfortable/to tight/all of the previous!

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 16/01/2019 15:25

@babycatcher411 I've given up on the hunt for a good bra! I'm quite big any way (32E) luckily they haven't got much bigger.. but I'm struggling with the lack of support! Non wired ones just don't cut it!

Gronk27 · 16/01/2019 15:49

I got some Mothercare bras on the sale but I have fairly small boobs C/D cup and a wide back. The nursing bras on Jojo Maman are super comfy but not supportive!

babycatcher411 · 16/01/2019 16:18

I was 34c/d dependant on the shop, and only ever wore balconette bras pre pregnancy as hate my boobs touching in the middle.
I’ve now gone to a 38e, and even that feels too tight, but if I go any bigger on the chest size, it’s basically no support as it’s actually too big, and I can’t cope with underwire anymore as that feels tight regardless of the size/digs into my little fat roll I’ve got going on on the top of my bump when I sit down πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆ

Harley8888 · 16/01/2019 16:40

@babycatcher411 it's been tough finding a bra! I was a 34DD before pregnancy and when I was in my 1st trimester I went to get measures at M&S and somehow showed up as a 38DD! She got it so wrong! It was so badly fitted and the cups are huge eventhough it's the same cup.size as before. I.went and got measured again at 3rd trimester and it's stil.38DD but I know that's not the right size! The extra material gathers at the bottom.of the cups.. It's horrible. So I've just taken out the wires of my old 34DD bras .. no idea what to.do about nursing bras!

babycatcher411 · 16/01/2019 17:01

That’s a good idea about taking it the wires, I might try that, as I’ve found the maternity once’s also gather/found at the bottom regardless of whether they β€˜fit’

SquirtlesMumAgain · 16/01/2019 17:23

Please all go and look up Boob or Bust!
The discomfort is most likely from too big a band not offering any support.
I have 32K boobs but for years wore a 38f.... They never fitted well!
For nursing bras measure with the BoB calculator around 36 weeks and run manicly away from anyone in m&s or mothercare who offers to measure you.
Mothercare are truly dangerous.... They tried to put me in a 40DD when I was 3 days PP and desperate for help and someone else to just tell me what to wear... So far off I cannot explain!

Oh and as for cup size - a DD isn't a cup size, it just means the overbust measurement is 5" bigger than the band (which if you think about it over 2 boobs is only 2.5" projection each boob from your chest wall, which isn't a lot) so a 38DD is a 43" overbust and a 34DD is a 39" overbust.

Bras are kinda my thing, sorry!

Gronk27 · 16/01/2019 18:12

Oh yeah the woman who measured me in a Mothercare was absolutely useless. I asked her to check the fit on a bra and she said usually the way to tell is if it’s comfortable-erm no! You should check the straps, the band, how it fits in between the boobs, if you’re filling the cups, etc.

Hermagsjesty · 16/01/2019 18:28

Just catching up and sorry to hear about all the aches, ailments and insomnia.

Went and bought the first batch of baby stuff today and it’s all starting to feel a bit real now!! Had forgotten for completely teeny, tiny newborn clothes are.

My pram is totally trashed from my older DC so, going to go shopping for a new one next week. Also, think I’m going to need to replace all car seats to fit all 3 of the kids across the backseat - cheaper than buying a new car I suppose!

Only 6wks to go and very much hoping he’s on time. I agree with everyone else, the third trimester is HARD!!

BadBadBeans · 16/01/2019 21:20

Oh dear. Just got the old Moses basket out and had a look, and it's so squashed and sad-looking, with broken bits. To be fair, it was squashed before we got it, and I had to stitch some of the basket back together in places, and I still used it for DS... But then I just went on the Little Green Sheep website and they have beautiful new baskets with knitted liners and brand new mattresses for Β£80. I was planning on buying a new mattress for it anyway, which would be Β£40 alone...

Oh, sod it. I'm buying a new one. I just showed DH the state of our current one, and even he had to admit it looked a bit awful.

That takes my spend on baby no. 2 to a grand total of Β£104.95, which is this and the extra Cheeky Wipes pack. Going to buy a pram for Β£50 next week; still need to get a changing mat and bouncy chair... Will I really get all the non-disposable baby items I need for less than Β£200 in total?! Surely I must be forgetting something...

@babycatcher411 Gosh it's nice to have a professional on here! I reckon they are Braxton Hicks, then. I will pay more attention next time I have one and see how long it lasts!

@cardboard33 I was 4.5 when my brother was born and remember vividly that he had 'gone out to get me a present' - which was a My Little Pony at the bottom of his hospital cot (ahh, child of the 80s). I also remember the midwife coming to do the heel prick test on him at home. I didn't like it and went upstairs to get my teddy. Fainted coming back down the stairs and tumbled down half a flight, to lie unconscious at the bottom. Midwife apparently screamed: 'Oh my god, she's dead!' Not terribly helpful for my poor mum! (Obvs I wasn't dead, but I did get an overnight stay in hospital to check I was okay. My mum, unbelievably, came with me, leaving tiny baby brother at home with my dad!) Am hoping DS's reactions won't be so eventful...

I also had a truly rubbish experience with Mothercare bra fitting when pregnant with DS and will never, ever go back for a bra there. They didn't have my size so just went up a band and down a cup. I was so desperate that I agreed and bought it. I was fleeced! @SquirtlesMumAgain thanks, I will def use that site to calculate bra size nearer my due date. Although I've been living in the JoJo sleep/nursing ones already, plus a couple of crop top type ones from Urban Outfitters.

BadBadBeans · 16/01/2019 21:42

Anyone getting a lie-flat carseat, by the way? I am almost certainly not going to do this as I can't justify the expense, but my SIL and BIL have one for their new baby and it does look amazing! I think the guidelines have significantly changed since DS for how long you can drive a small baby in a car seat without a break... When he was born it was 2 hours, then while he was still tiny it changed to 1 hour. I've heard it's now 20 minutes - is that true?!

WhatALearningCurve · 16/01/2019 21:58

@BadBadBeans the one I've got is a lie flat and it came in a bundle with the pram. It's suitable for planes and with two long haul flights coming up it seemed the best bet. (Plus - I'm a sucker for sales feature)

Angelmiracle · 16/01/2019 22:02

@BadBadBeans we were looking at car seats and prams on Saturday and of course got shown a lie flat. Kiddy - Which recommended. It looked fab. He said they're normally Β£400 but they could sell them for over Β£300 &something. Apparently it's 30mins max for newborn then 2 hours for all babies maybe someone can clarify from what age.

Would be tempting but you'd still need to buy a pram with wheels to attach it to and an isofix base - soon adds up!

OP posts:
Angelmiracle · 16/01/2019 22:02

What brand did you get @WhatALearningCurve if you don't mind me asking?

OP posts:
babycatcher411 · 16/01/2019 23:33

We’re getting the Cybex Cloud Z which is lie flat.

Professionally we recommend 20-30minutes as a newborn is the ideal. Obviously long journeys are unavoidable at times, but it’s best if an adults sits next to babe during those journeys and you take a break as often as is convenient/necessary.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the lay flats negate the need to consider these recommendations, but they definitely give you much more leeway. And a little bit of common sense can be applied really.

The advise is based around 2 things, car seats tend not to be very supportive of tiny backs, they’re usually relatively curved and from a physio point of view baby’s shouldn’t spend extended periods in anything that’s not completely flat- I.e car seats and bouncy chairs.
And that sadly there have been a few incidents of baby’s suffocating in car seats because they can’t control their heads properly and there is a risk of blocked airways.

WhatALearningCurve · 17/01/2019 06:48

@Angelmiracle the pram is the Mutsy I2 and the car seat is a Kiddy Evolution Pro

SquirtlesMumAgain · 17/01/2019 08:12

I sat in the back with DS on the way home from hospital - wouldn't change it for the world, only thing I would pre-warn everyone... If you can, get whoever is driving to avoid pot holes and speedbumps! We all know they are felt more at the back and when you are post birth and feeling very delicate it is even worse!!!!

Angelmiracle · 17/01/2019 09:47

@WhatALearningCurve thanks! Lovely pram 😊
