@hidcat really good news, hope you & baby take care of yourselves!

@villagefete and @badbadbeans thanks, but I'm in a really fortunate position compared to others and my situation also isn't unique. I've got the perfect life other than this so I'd still much rather have my life than most people's!! (Not that I think you all have awful lives, haha)

One of my close friends found out she has cancer in late October and they wanted her to start chemo straight away, and her chemo is also one of the most aggressive ones when it comes to your fertility. She had to beg with them to delay for a few weeks to salvage what eggs she could so that they've got even a chance of getting pregnant in the future. We've had 2.5 years to plan the treatment into our lives and to get our heads around it. I'm really really lucky that we were able to have this baby.

@villagefete we've got the Chicco next to me dream. It was recommended by lots of friends but obviously haven't used it yet! We price watched it since June and recently bought it for the cheapest we've since it since, so are happy.

@gronk27 glad you enjoyed the tour. We are booked onto one in Feb sometime. Where would you need to go if you did want an epidural when it came to it? Our midwife led unit is just on a different floor of the hospital to the doctor led unit so they just trolly you to the next floor if you get into complications. I've got no choice but to go in the doctor led one but would definitely opt for the midwife led one of that were an option.

Epidurals are an interesting one. I never intended to have one, but after 6 odd hours in labour I was pleading for one... Only problem was there was no anaesthetist available so I ended up just having Paracetamol and gas & air.
I will try the same tactic again but also have a code word with DH again so if I ask for and epidural and really mean it he knows!

@cardboard33 I’m not really sure with it being Birmingham Women’s Hospital I think they are only two hospitals like it that are just for women’s health, fertility and birth. You have 4 options, home, birthing suite (as I described and no epidural), delivery suite-a more β€˜traditional’ room with a bed in the middle and all the medical equipment, caesarean. Apart from home obviously, it’s all under one roof so if you need intervention you get moved.

Good morning Ladies.
Yesterday was an interesting one for me...
Popped out to get some baby bits and a car tried to over take me on a round about and smashed into the side of my car. All the impact went into the drivers side door so I was a bit stunned. Luckily there wasn't too much damage to the car so could drive it away. Got home and that's when the panic set in so called the maternity helpline who told me to come straight in. Spent the night having the babies heart monitored and they were concerned that it wasn't elevating when I changed position or when the baby moved. I then started getting tightenings which they were even more concerned about (I felt none of them but apparently they were quite strong). So I had to have an internal to check if I was dilated at all. Luckily I wasn't. They also did a test to see if I was going into early labour which was negative and we were finally allowed home. The midwife just said we've got a lazy, sleepy baby so I'm hoping it stays that way once it's born!
The midwife and doctors were lovely so I'm a lot more at ease now when I do finally have to go in to give birth.
It's just bloody typical. I've been driving for ten years and never had a knock and the 10 months I don't want anything to happen some douche tries to run me off the road!!

That must have been scary all round @assumeitwassomethingclever. Glad to hear all is OK though! Hope they get less lazy by labour though for you!

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever oh dear. Glad that all seems well. If you feel at all funny in the next few days I would head straight back in. Bloody stupid other drivers!!!

@SquirtlesMumAgain that's very true!! She also said it's a little back to back. So at the moment I've got a breech, back to back, lazy baby!!

@Miami81 thank you 😊. Yeah they've given me quite a list of things to look out for.

Do you have a gym ball @assumeitwassomethingclever?
Might be worth starting sitting on them as it's supposed to encourage movement if I remember rightly!!!

@SquirtlesMumAgain oh really? Thank you! I'll definitely get one. Thank you

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever bloody idiot drivers! So glad you're okay though that's the main thing. Rest up over the next few days as much as you can.

I did read that gentle movement (like a gym ball) can encourage baby to shift position. Baby might well do by them self before labour (fingers crossed!)

@assumeitwassomethingclever so glad you and baby are ok - sounds like you've both escaped unharmed.

This is a bit of a long shot, but I know people have discussed Little Green Sheep on here in the past. Does anyone know if they regularly send out discount codes/have sales? Basically, it feels finding sheets and mattress protectors for the next to me crib is a nightmare unless you want to pay full wack for the Chicco own brand sheets... and it doesn't look like they even do a mattress protector? I've found a mattress protector that will potentially fit on LGS but it's quite expensive so hoping that if I hold out I'll be able to get some kind of discount on it if I leave it in my basket. Have just signed up for their mailing list etc.

Whilst writing this post I've also found this:
www.mothercare.com/mattress-protectors-and-covers/chicco-hygienical-terry-mattress-cover/241238.html?cgid=nursery_mattresses_sparecovers

So I don't know now :( .... why is finding sheets for all of the various sleeping things the hardest part of the process to date?!

@assumeitwassomethingclever so glad you go checked out and all ok, what a shock!

@cardboard33 I managed to randomly find some Chicco next to me sheets for Β£5 off in the Mothercare sake apart from that they are Β£20 everywhere. The nattesss cover isn’t especially rated but I can see how another layer would be handy! I think my friend has given me a couple with the next to me itself. I’m going to be getting a new mattress from Chicco spares. There doesn’t seem to be any discounting going on!!

@HidCat I'm really glad you're okay.

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever Bloody hell that sounds horrible. So pleased you and baby are okay. Rest up - sounds like a real shock.

@cardboard33 firstly, I'm so sorry to read about your friend. What a situation. I'm glad she has been able to salvage a few eggs. Obviously a different situation, but I have a family member who had testicular cancer as a teenager and had to have sperm frozen before treatment. He and his wife have just had a gorgeous baby girl through IVF. Regarding Little Green Sheep, I've bought from them a few times and have never seen a sale or discount - mind you I am not on their mailing list. Just to warn you that their ordinary sized cot mattress protector is a teeny bit smaller than the cot mattress - I assume that is so you can fit a sheet over the top easily. This hasn't been a problem for us for 2.5 years... until two nights ago when DS leaked out of his nappy overnight and was lying right on the edge of his bed! Protector caught most of it but the mattress still got damp at the edge! Doh! I must say though I am so impressed by the quality of their mattresses. They are just gorgeous.

@assumeitwassomethingclever glad you and the baby are ok. that sounds so scary.. I had a car accident just before I found out I was pregnant because of a speeding motorcyclist.. going 50 in a 20 zone! Angry scary to think what can happen because of another driver. I've been so scared to drive throughout the pregnancy so have just avoided it. Need to get my confidence back before baby arrives.

Boots and Tesco are doing a few deals on hospital bag stuff. Got maternity pads, breast pads etc on 3 for 2 and newborn nappies were BOGOF but all gone in my boots store!

Gronk27 · 13/01/2019 18:57

When you say mattress protector do you mean another layer or an actual waterproof one to save the mattress after leakages? The Chicco one is apparently neither water proof or a β€˜topper’ just a thicker sheet for wear I think.

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 13/01/2019 20:18

Thanks everyone for your support. Means a lot! Trying not to let it get to me and knock my confidence in regards to driving. We've got better things to spend Β£300 on rather than our excess! Been trying to get ahead with finances and have a a few thousand saved before baby comes but it seems to be one thing after another.

Report
SquirtlesMumAgain · 13/01/2019 20:32

@Gronk27 not sure the exact protector that they are talking about but I would highly recommend a removable waterproof protector for whatever baby sleeps in that can go through the wash and buy two... When they throw up you want to just be able to strip it off and then put it all in the machine

Report
cardboard33 · 13/01/2019 21:17

@badbadbeans & @gronk27 I mean this mattress protector which says it's waterproof etc? Struggling a bit with the mattress sizes as I've measured the mattress which came with the Chicco crib and it's definitely 53x83cm but EVERYWHERE (including the Chicco own brand stuff) is 50x83cm, so I'm assuming that this must be the right size.

@cardboard33 ah yes I’ve seen that one on Amazon, I can see how waterproof would be very handy! We have a bullet proof one on our own bed with a guarantee and a friend with a 6 month old asked if we had one because of boob leakage, night sweats, etc.

Is anyone looking at the gro snugs for straight away?

Report
Gronk27 · 13/01/2019 21:34

@assumeitwassomethingclever meant to say, people always forget about the hidden costs of being in an accident. Of course the fact you’re both ok is topmost but like you say a dent in finances when you think you’ve got everything worked out and an increased premium are so frustrating! I feel for you.

Report
toastfiend · 13/01/2019 22:09

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever - goodness, how scary for you. So pleased you and baby are both OK. Very frustrating to have to spend out on the excess at this stage, though. Other drivers frighten me, I've become hyper aware since being pregnant and the number of near misses due to other people's impatience/lack of awareness/downright road rage terrifies me. I've always been a really confident driver so it's a strange feeling. So pleased you're OK.

@Gronk27 I've bought a couple of gro swaddles and a gro snug off Facebook Marketplace. They seem to come up a lot. I didn't want to pay full price in case the baby hates them, but for Β£5 or so each for brand new ones still in the packaging they were worth trying. Planning to use them from the off (with a blanket over the swaddles when the snug is in the wash) and then graduate to the gro bags (another Facebook marketplace bargain!) when baby is big enough.
