Re: toilet training -
I work with the continence team as part of my job and they work with families, particularly with children with autism, who are struggling with toilet training (children with autism typically don't know when they're wet) and the children are often in nappies until about 5.

Their advice is - you can toilet train a child from the point where they have a vocabulary of at least 5 words and they have an understanding of at least 5 words.
Give the child 150ml to 200ml in one go and put them on the toilet 15 minutes later. Repeat! I've seen this used successfully with many children with autism I've worked with; they recommend this for neurotypical children too.

One of the continence nurses was telling me that in schools we encourage children to sip water, but this is counter productive as the child's bladder never gets full and so doesn't learn to stretch. The same is true for adults - we sip water when actually we should be stretching and working our bladders by regularly drinking 250ml - 300ml at a time.

@LauraLovesLuke my DS is 4 in March and still in nappies. He is autistic with sensory difficulties so your post was really useful to me as I've been worrying and had no support on the potty training front. He doesn't seem to know he has done a poo let alone a wee, is non verbal and cannot follow instructions yet unless they have been learned over months and months via routine. I haven't attempted potty training yet, especially as he can't pull his trousers up and down (although we have some work and lots of encouragement he can pull his nappy down now Grin) so found your post reassuring that I'm not the only one with an almost 4yo still in nappies! Good tips for when I do start, thank you, though think at the moment he is just not ready.

Nausea is starting to ease at last, but still get strong waves of it especially in the morning and at dinnertime. Snacking is still the only thing helping really!

Reastie · 22/12/2018 07:22

Laura thanks for that, it’s really interesting, I’d never heard of that technique before. We tried potty training dd and things just weren’t going well and dd didn’t want to use the potty. We tried everything. Ten I gave up and tried a few months later and it just worked straight away so I think they can click with it when they’re ready.

KoalasAteMyHomework · 22/12/2018 07:23

@Fabuluce not sure if ours is different because of the different hospitals, and the reasons why you're having it, but our scan with fetal cardiology is separate from our 21 week one, but they have booked it on the same day so we only have to go to the hospital once. So we are having the cardiology scan and then the usual 21wk anomoly one is an hour after the cardiology appt.

Fabuluce · 22/12/2018 07:48

Thanks @KoalasAteMyHomework it feels like a long time since the last time I was doing all these things and I was hoping they might have actually got things in the right order for me but seemingly not! Will chase them up 1 thanks for the heads up.

Good luck to all those attempting potty training soon. I did both mine at about 2.5 when I knew I had a few days where we could be at home. Let them have the potty wherever they wanted at first before moving it permanently to the bathroom then onto step and toilet seat adapter.

Had both in nappies for a time when DD was born so feel the pain there! At least this time around it will be just the one.

I had my 16 week appointment yesterday where we heard the heartbeat and have my gender scan this afternoon !!! Feeling nervous! Have attached my 12 week scan if anyone has any last minute guesses! Grin

@MadeinCornwallx3 I really don’t know but I’ll guess girl!

It’s crazy how early the sales start now! I still haven’t made my first baby purchase, just waiting to pay off my Christmas spending credit card bill first!

Kescilly · 22/12/2018 09:24

@MadeInCornwallx3 good luck for the scan today! I'm no good with guesses so I'll just wait and see. Do you have any preferences?

You're all making me jealous, I don't have my private scan until Monday!

coastergirl · 22/12/2018 09:46

@LauralovesLuke I've screen shotted your advice and I'm going to give it a go!

@KoalasAteMyHomework my little boy will be 4 in March too, and is also still in nappies. He has some speech and language delays. He's extremely (EXTREMELY) strong-willed! He sees a speech and language therapist. We currently don't think he has autism, but not sure. I've been working with autistic children for 14 years and have a masters degree in autism, but it's so hard to tell with him! I've tried potty training a few times with no success. He definitely knows he's going, and prefers to poo on the potty but just wees in his pants! Little monkey.

LauralovesLuke · 22/12/2018 10:01

Good luck! The other things the nurses have said are that some children become frustrated/annoyed when sitting on the toilet waiting to wee, so they've suggested that if that happens, have things like bubbles nearby to distract them while they wee. Also some children with autism don't like the noise wee makes when it hits the pan so again bubbles can be used as a distraction. And obviously lots of rewards!!

KoalasAteMyHomework · 22/12/2018 10:14

@coastergirl I remember all the agonising over not knowing with our son. Turns out he actually presents quite obviously, just hard to tell for us as we didn't know much about autism before. He is also massively stubborn, everything on his own terms and to his own agenda. But also the happiest little boy. So much harder with strong willed toddlers! I find autism fascinating but very tricky, as everyone is so different so even with a degree in autism and all that experience I can understand why you still aren't sure. Hope the therapy helps his speech and language delays - that will probably help in a lot of areas!

We'll need a new thread soon!

lstef · 22/12/2018 10:16

I switched to new multivits this morning thinking it was the same thing as my previous ones but no within 10 mins I threw it straight back up. won't be trying that again! getting just plain vitD instead. Strange how I tolerated Sevenseas ones but not Wilko own brand. Havent been sick in a few weeks so cant be anything else.

fee1234 · 22/12/2018 12:33

@MadeInCornwallx3 I'm guessing girl! Hope the scan goes well.

CrazyCowLady · 22/12/2018 12:34

@Blondcat Thanks for H and M heads up, just got some shopping done!! Wink

Any one else in a weird phase of 'fat or pregnant'? My tummy is starting to get in the way of things (like kneeling or leaning on the kitchen counter) and is definitely bigger, but somedays just looks like I have started to pile on weight around my middle, rather than a bump. I've got a few dresses that make it look more bump like, but tops and trouser look terrible. I have always had quite a wobbly tum, it is just getting wobblier!

CrazyCowLady · 22/12/2018 12:36

Also, good luck on scan today @MadeInCornwallx3!

@lstef sounds like you are having a hard time at the mo. Hope things get easier for you asap x

fee1234 · 22/12/2018 13:40

@CrazyCowLady I'm the same!! Mine's not a rounded bump yet and just looks like I've gained weight. My boobs are bigger and full of blue veins! Thinking about putting on some fake tan to see if it makes them look better

Kescilly · 22/12/2018 13:43

I’m both fat and pregnant so I’ve really been struggling with body image the last few weeks. I’m 17 weeks and feel like I look like I have a huge bump because all my extra weight has been pushed out.

I actually feel really embarrassed and want to hide in huge T-shirts and stay home. I don’t know what to wear to my in-laws and we are with them for several days.

Sosie91 · 22/12/2018 15:02

Hi everyone we’ve just had our gender scan. We are having a baby girl. I have two very excited big sisters.. the gender scan was fab!! They spent so much more time on the baby and we even got to see her beautiful face in 4D xx

fee1234 · 22/12/2018 15:39

@Sosie91 congrats on your girl! Amazing news 😀
