I don’t know how you do it @napssavelives

I’ve got my dial of emotions on “high” anyway as I find this time of year exhausting and all over the place - and I work in a boring corporate office environment.

I am gently announcing the departure of my nausea. Nowt for 5 days. This is great. 15w today.

BethlBuck · 13/12/2018 09:15

We had our 12 week scan yesterday! EDD of 28th June so currently 11+6, one day behind what we thought. I was so nervous before hand but seeing the little one wiggling their arms and legs and move around in there was just the most amazing thing! It's been so lovely to start telling wider friends and family and begin to get properly excited

toomanyflatwhites · 13/12/2018 10:27

Lovely scans!

Like Paul I'm wondering how on earth you do it Naps, I don't remember being emotional last pregnancy but this time I've also got my dial up to max. I work in a hospital (though actually for a university medical dept, so just based here) and find it hard enough seeing people in the lift and corridors, let alone actually working with them.

On the subject of flu jabs - i couldn't get it at work this week because they don't know if it's the right strain to give to pregnant women, so I called GP to try and get it booked. They told me they "don't have a clinic right now" and don't know when they will...so I asked where else I can get it. They not fucking helpfully suggested I go to the pharmacy near the surgery - I asked if it's the right strain, and if it's free, and they said they didn't know - so I had a bit of a grump and after telling them this was a useless response I hung up - thank god I didn't give my name first 🤣 Am never normally so grumpy as this when I'm not pregnant!!!

stellarfox · 13/12/2018 10:45

Lovely scans @BethlBuck That looks like a good nub shot if you want an idea of the gender!

@toomany Are flu jabs not all the same? When I had mine at the doctors he asked if I were allergic to egg as apparently there was raw egg in there. I did think that was strange to give to a pregnant woman but they knew I was pregnant so hopefully it was ok! I think it’s worth it if you can find somewhere to go - my partners been quite ill the last few days and I don’t seem to have got it (touch wood!)

My new job is essentially starting right away which means I’m signing my own work off eek! Bit scary!

Blondcat · 13/12/2018 10:48

@toomanyflatwhites I went to asda for mine they filled in details knew I was pregnant and then sent letter to gp to tell them I had it. No charge and assume was correct strain.

Also pregnancy grump I normally get a little road rage when driving but have chilled out since feeling so rough cba to get annoyed just want to get a to b without feeling to sick but yesterday good job no one could actually hear me... Idiots on the road is all I can say I did realise I was being a bit grumpy and was restrained enough not to use my horn or gestures just grumping to myself.

coles85 · 13/12/2018 11:45

emily1511 I wondered this too so I asked the lady who does my nails who said it was fine (it's the soak off bit that has a teeny bit of risk, but they can file it off if you want) but to be sure she asked a client who is a nurse who also said it was totally fine. So I will be shellacing through my pregnancy, since it's the only thing about me that is pretty at the moment, as I feel like an elephant!

MauisLeftNipple · 13/12/2018 13:16

I've never heard of an appropriate strain for a flu jab for pregnant women. As far as I am aware, there is only 1 injectable jab available, and it contains the 4 most likely strains to be circulating this season. I have had the jab in all 4 pgs, the earliest at 7 weeks, and never been told I might need a pg-friendly alternative. I think your occ health dept doesn't know what they're talking about toomany.

In other news, I am definitely feeling movement. I am 11+6 today and have had tiny flutters for 3 or 4 days. It is very much like wind, but having had 3 others babies I know it's a very little person. I don't actually find this reassuring because I am awaiting Harmony results and am so scared they will come back high risk. This (and my ongoing nausea) is all I can think about.

MauisLeftNipple · 13/12/2018 13:33

Ok, so the quadrivalent jab (4 strains) is recommended for people aged 16-64, including pregnant women. This is the one most pharmacies (and occ health depts) would stock I imagine. There is a trivalent jab for 65+.

KoalasAteMyHomework · 13/12/2018 13:35

Sorry all, I dropped off again didn't I?! Making it an early new year resolution to keep up with this thread!
Had our scan last Wed, put us at 13wks so about 3 days ahead. New due date is 12th June - don't suppose someone could add me to the list, its DC2?
Bit of a worrying 24hrs after the scan. On3 of the measurements was indicating a higher risk of a chromosome issue so they rushed my bloods through and said they would call the next day - and then the bloody o2 network went down and I couldn't make or receive calls!! Luckily it came back as low risk which surprised me as assumed with my age etc it would be at least intermediate (my hospital does low intermediate or high. Intermediate means you have the bloods sent to america and high means you can have that or the needle procedure for a definitive result). We do have to have an extra cardiac scan for baby which is just before our 21wk scan but baby was moving around fine and all looks great at the moment so not too worried.
Having a very tough time with DS who is 3 (nearly 4). He is autistic and now his schedule is all different with Christmas festivities instead of his usual play sessions and preschool, he is really struggling. Really worries me how I will cope when I have a newborn in tow too but I suppose I'll manage somehow.
Welcome to the newbies that have joined recently and great scan pics from so many of you :-)

KoalasAteMyHomework · 13/12/2018 13:40

Did anyone hear how @spottypyjamas scan went Mon? Not sure if I missed something. Hope all is ok x

mindthechaos · 13/12/2018 14:11

Thanks for the talk of the flu jab, finally remembered to book mine. Got my scan tomorrow at lunch time and I’m excited but so nervous. Saw the heartbeat at about 6 weeks, but doesn’t stop the worry

JBCG · 13/12/2018 15:29

@mindthechaos I've got a scan tomorrow too at about 2pm. I've found I'm more nervous for this scan than any of my others. I think it's because I've suddenly recovered from my nausea and have now convinced myself I have a complete loss of symptoms. I'm 12+0 today and although everything was fine at 11+1 .. they wanted to do another scan as it was too small to do all the checks etc. I trying to convince myself I'm being silly and should be thankful that I'm not being sick anymore but I am scared.

Curlywurly3 · 13/12/2018 15:31

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I disappeared for a few days, we got back from Iceland late last night. I have never been so cold in my life!!

I had my 12 week scan this morning and was pushed back a couple of days so 12+3 and 24th June. My Nuchuel measurement was 2mm and I've had bloods as well so need to wait for that... All this is new to me! The baby looked happy though which was so lovely to see :)

They also gave me my flu shot this morning.

I'm looking forward to telling the rest of the family and friends over the next week:)

lstef · 13/12/2018 17:17

hey everyone, dropped off for a few days while processing the whole twin thing. The stuff we need is so expensive! I guess I was naive to this before TTC as didnt have any reason to google car seats etc. Two isofixes, a bigger car that has isofix (my car is too small for two plus double buggy), car seats, cot(s), double buggy. I am buying the minimum stuff to get by cos money. But wow. oh and possibly moving house too at end of Feb as getting out of our flat with twins (the flat itself is big enough, the access to it isn't unless we rely on a twin carrier), especially on my own. I live in a small town and poss moving further out so being carless is not something I want to face...

Yikes.
But yay I'm so EXCITED, happy and feel so blessed :) Ive started collecting vests and babygro's cos am mostly relying on hand me downs and charity shops - the babies are likely to be tiny so will need to get preemie stuff new (or maybe I'll find bundles on ebay etc)..

oh and going to knit/crochet stuff too!

Ive started worrying again that theyre not growing, and waiting another 5 weeks for the next scan feels agonising. A scan is only good evidence on the day that its done though, so gawd so much time to worry whether theyre ok!! Im guessing a lot of you have the same worries?!? I cant wait to feel them move...

Hello to new joiners and glad to be able to write this stuff out with people who get it!

:)

KoalasAteMyHomework · 13/12/2018 17:43

@Istef it must be very overwhelming with all that to think about. Try not to worry too much and good that you are excited Smile
Have they given you any information regarding twins groups/support? I think our local childrens centre had a group for parents of twins so maybe there is some sort of group near you where they can help you out with how to go about buggies and car seats etc?

MauisLeftNipple · 13/12/2018 17:59

Istef you don't NEED isofix. It certainly adds to the expense of car seats, and it's no safer than a seatbelt. Fwiw, we have a maxicosi cabriofix and have never used it on an isofix base in our main car (our single base stayed in mine; didn't want the expense of two). I actually prefer to fit it with the seatbelt because you get a better recline. If your rear seats are sloped at all, then the isofix base will also be sloped, meaning the carseat sits quite upright. If you have any friends with older babies I'd ask what they plan to do with the baby seat when it's outgrown. Nearly new sales are fab for bundles of clothes (and toys!). You might find you are given lots too.

You can do this!

lstef · 13/12/2018 18:31

Koalas - thank you :) its totally overwhelming but exciting too. I haven't had any input/info/chats with any health professionals since last week and sonographer was only there to do the scan, I have next midwife appt on 28th so will ask some questions about twin groups and support. have joined a twins group on fb which is about 40 min drive away :S but they recommended the twin carrier and seem helpful so will ask what they did re: car seats and buggies etc.

Mauis - cool, my friend yest said isofix is much safer but Im open to considering both. I just havent had much exposure to this stuff as only have seen car seat in operation once (when i took friend and baby out - we used the belt). Interesting about the recline of the seats.. I'd love to be able to see car seats fitted into a car, or even try it myself but not sure where or how.

have heard about some nearly new sales so will google those too. If Im having a girl my "SIL" (im not married) said shes got loads of clothes. We thankfully have a fair few people/family around us (these babies will have 7 grandparents! and 4 great-grandparents!) so I'm sure it will all work out somehow!

:D

BethlBuck · 13/12/2018 19:36

thanks @stellarfox I was thinking that too!

@istef my mum always said she relied entirely on hand me downs, gifts and charity shops for me and my brother when we were little and didn't have many toys-just lots of imagination! And honestly we had such a fun child hood-none of it matters, I'm sure it'll all be fine!

In our scan yesterday the sonographer mentioned I have a heart shaped uterus and showed us it-super obvious! She then just moved on but I google it (silly me) out of interest and am now panicking about 2nd trimester miscarriage rates and having to have a C section. Is it totally ridiculous to call my widwife to chat about it as she didn't even write it on my notes??

spottypyjamas · 13/12/2018 19:39

@KoalasAteMyHomework thanks for asking I hadn't gotten round to updating. Carried on bleeding all weekend but scan on Monday showed all was still ok. They could see a haematoma this time so it may bleed again or may be absorbed. I'm rhesus negative so had to have a massive injection in my bum, owww, forgot they weren't nice! X

MauisLeftNipple · 13/12/2018 19:46

Istef isofix isn't safer, however it reduces the chance of incorrectly fitting the car seat (the seat base will show a green light if it's installed properly). Definitely consider belting only - once you get used to it (and are confident of the routing) it's an absolute doddle and doesn't really take much longer than clicking a car seat onto a base.

KoalasAteMyHomework · 13/12/2018 20:05

Yes Istef as MauisLeftNipple says isofix isn't safer as long as you belt the car seat properly- I am useless at stuff like that and still managed it with my son. My friend has twins and she used to sell on her clothes when outgrown as bundles on ebay and use the money to pay for the next lot of clothes. So may be worth checking facebay, eBay etc and as someone else mentioned, nearly new sales.
My Dad was a twin and I think its such a lovely bond. Plus sometimes they entertain each other and gives you a break haha!

spottypyjamas thats great news. Glad baby was ok at the scan.

Pigriver · 13/12/2018 21:33

@istef
2 of my friends have just had twins within a week of each other !
ISO fix are handy but we bought our base second hand for £25 and used SIL infant seat as I was confident it hadn’t been in an accident etc. Double buggy’s are often pretty cheap second hand too.
One of my friends is using her single pushchair from her first and a sling for now so don’t feel you need to rush out and buy. We were given so many hand me downs and gifts (our families are small and not big gifters but it adds up so fast) that we only bought the pushchair, a million muslins and a new cot mattress.

12 week scan on Monday....still so long to wait!

beardotdo · 13/12/2018 21:44

Hi @lstef
I’ve got twins who are 3 now, they were my first and it is so overwhelming! As for baby equipment I’d say stick to as minimal as possible until they’re here and then see what you need. My two shared a cot in our room until they were 7 months and slept in a travel cot or bouncy chairs when downstairs, so no need for Moses baskets. We bought our pushchair second hand and most of their clothes second hand (or bought by family) too.

Twins are absolutely amazing (albeit bloody hard work)! Now they’re older I’m definitely reaping the benefits as they play together and entertain each other constantly. And it can’t be that bad because I’m doing it again; admittedly it is only one baby this time, but still.

Don’t hesitate to message me if you’ve got any questions. There are some great FB groups for twin parents out there too.

lstef · 13/12/2018 22:49

@beardotdo - awesome thanks. yeah we are going to have them in one cot in our room for first few months, we got given a travel cot so glad to hear that was useful for you - Im not bothering with moses baskets or anything that lasts only a few months. Clothes seem to be fairly easy to come by, and I can knit/crochet some with the abundance of yarn I have - that paired with a babygro will be their outfits for the first while. I am totally keen on going as minimal as possible, I don't want loads of unnecessary stuff. I am pretty set on getting a buggy that can go off road (e.g. out n about nipper double) - but I think there are other brands and yeah second hand is an option if we can find one plus the carrycots that attach to it - but who knows whether theyll actually want to go in it! I want to try the carrier too as if we are stuck in this flat for a while I can't actually get out of here with a buggy (awkward narrow steps) especially if just me - fine if family or DP are here.

@pigriver - thanks for tips - we have a fair few very excited family members (albeit not all in UK) who will undoubtedly buy stuff for us.

@koalas and @mauis good to know about the isofix, Id never even heard of it until a couple of months ago and always assumed the seats would be belted.

Definitely doing my research and wont rush to get anything, we dont have the money to be frivolous with what we buy. Plus I also enjoy exploring different ways of doing things and making do with minimal stuff - does make me think/wonder how people did it 50-60 years ago!

Thanks everyone for the replies, feeling a lot more positive about all this - we can do it! hehe. :)
