I’m working about reduced movements again especially after poking myself in the stomach yesterday although I think I know that’s unlikely to have caused a problem in itself

I am now lying on my left side after having eating a small tub of Ben & Jerrys(!) to see how much she is moving

If movement doesn’t pick up and I go to the hospital. What would they actually do if there was a problem?? I mean they would monitor but what do they do if movements don’t pick up??

Yakadee · 09/12/2018 20:02

@AliceRR - they do like to worry us don't they! Hopefully you'll be worrying for nothing. I don't have any experience but I imagine they'd keep you in for monitoring and try and find out what the issue is. Maybe try looking on NHS (although might just worry you more?).

Let us know how it goes - Hopefully they'll start wriggly soon x

AvoidingMarking · 09/12/2018 20:07

@AliceRR my daughter regularly climbs, occasionally jumps when she forgets and runs into my stomach. They have a lot of padding there so sure that's not the cause.

The hospital would do a c section if they thought there was a problem with the baby but I'm sure it won't come to that. In my experience the baby waits to be plugged in and then does the river dance just to make you look stupid.

Do call if you're worried and if you don't feel anything after eating the ice cream

Alicejj8x · 09/12/2018 20:24

@AliceRR have you got any fizzy drinks? I would try a coke or something then lie on left side xx

Alicejj8x · 09/12/2018 20:26

I'm in Reading Berkshire for meet up but I think it may be abit too far from everyone

Since2016 · 09/12/2018 20:26

They’ll strap monitors on your tummy and monitor with a CTG to assess heart rate and movement. There are thresholds for them to be worried. When I went in last week it took a while for her to move but heart rate was fine, they extended the monitoring to be safe and then movements picked up. No harm in checking if you’re really concerned or ring and ask. Depends how long ‘no movement’ is though.

Lookingforadvice123 · 09/12/2018 20:27

AliceRR sorry you're worried. They would refer you for a scan if they're not happy with your trace. As others have said though chances are as soon as you're on the trace, baby will start moving loads! Fingers crossed you're happy with the movements before having to go in.

Since2016 · 09/12/2018 20:27

Ps. My toddler regularly whacks me. So does the dog. And the midwife will manipulate your tummy to assess you. Often I poke mine to get her moving / that also works!

sickmumma · 09/12/2018 20:38

@emalady DH Dad lives in east grinstead - we are in Surbiton, Surrey so it's about a 20 minute drive from us - we were hoping to go to Brighton but I just wasn't feeling upto all the walking and fancied going somewhere a bit different and wanted to check out the big smyths toy store (which was fab!!)

@Lulabell1 Aww lovely!! I bet she is so excited! I haven't even thought of DD birthday yet but I should really! The boys birthdays were sept/October and baby due Feb we haven't given this much thought haha! We needed a summer baby really!!

@Surprisedmom That must be awful! Is there a way they can hire one in? Such a shame that you don't have that option! I had a water birth with my daughter and would really recommend it! Although not the be all and end all!

To those saying about an epidural - I bet you will surprise yourselves! I thought I would def need one but somehow managed each time on gas and air! I bet the worries will go in the moment though! I was induced with my first and had to have an episiotomy-
If you had asked me beforehand would I have wanted one it would have been a firm
No but in the moment and with your baby at risk you do whatever and just deal with it and actually it was nowhere as bad as I
Had have expected even recovery was straightforward in fact I recovered better than I did with my second where I had nothing!

@AliceRR I hope little ones starting to move! I always find just laying really still and rubbing my belly gets my little one going!

I'm 28 weeks now so know I should be thinking about movements but she still doesn't seem to have any set pattern! Kicks are all in different places too!!

I am also suffering with indigestion! It awful every time I eat I feel bad! I have found sleeping a little more upright helps too! Still managing to get through most nights without a mid night wee bit I find myself waking because baby kicks like crazy when I lay on my left side!!

Camsie30 · 09/12/2018 20:50

@powkin I'm at the Homerton too. Live in Wanstead, East London so not too far. They have been so brilliant so far, love the midwifery team there. Have a 32 week scan on 21st then midwife on 8th Jan to discuss my birth options. Really hoping to have a water birth again, but this time I'd love to actually deliver in the water.. we'll see what this chap decides!

powkin · 09/12/2018 21:08

@Camsie30 ahh very nice! We wanted to live nearer Forest Gate and the flats but couldn’t afford it so we are a bit further south in West Ham.

My next scan isn’t until 36 weeks - is that normal? Are you have an extra one? They booked it after my 20 week scan... maybe I’ll ask my midwife on Thursday.

I would also like a water birth, I was a bit despondent when I saw only 12% of births happen in the birthing centre, but it’s hard to your own personal odds as that percentage includes all high risk births and elective c-sections where they would never have even had that on their birth plan. I’d love to have the raw data so I can drill down myself, ie how many people who elected for the birth centre managed to give birth there. % where there was not enough space, % where it was decided prior to labour that it shouldn’t happen there, % where they were moved onto the ward or surgery. Such a geek, but feel like it would make me feel more prepared for what might happen to me personally!

AliceRR · 09/12/2018 22:30

I went into to Maternity Assessment Centre. They monitored me for half an hour. MW came and looked and then said looked like she was asleep but has woken up now so will leave it a bit longer. Then at the end she said everything looks normal but asked if I’m happy with movements as if I’m not they’d ask me to come back in tomorrow. By then I think I was happy with movement but found it odd that I’d gone there and been monitored only for her to say it was still a matter of my judgment...

I work 5 mins away from the hospital though so if I was worried again tomorrow I think I’d just call again...

Camsie30 · 09/12/2018 22:35

@powkin I'm having a scan at 32 weeks because I'm "geriatric" and because I had IVF... Last time I had far fewer scans.
I was in the birthing unit with my daughter but had to deliver out of the water as there was meconium in the waters... Honestly I wouldn't stress about statistics too much. Aim to have the birth you want but be open to change if it's in the best interest of you and your baby. I had a terrific experience with my daughter x

@AliceRR they rely on you to tell them what's normal for you even when they're doing the trace. Dd never moved much so when I went in for monitoring they were happy with minimal movement but ok heart rate. This baby is a massive wriggler so if they ever started moving like dd did that would be a huge worry. 'Normal' is different for every baby.
@powkin I did give birth in the water with dd and it was great. Getting out afterwards was a bit undignified though. 😂 I have a friend who wanted to give birth in the water and was in a room with a pool but didn't manage to and feels absolutely fine about her experience. It didn't happen but she had a lovely baby and everybody was well. It's difficult when you've got something in mind to imagine differently until you're in the situation. I expected to be in the MLU for ages before dd was born. I ended up pushing before I went in there and only just had the pool run in time. You end up going with the flow a lot!

@AliceRR they will rely on you to say if it’s normal. They can monitor heart rate but you’re the one that can feel the movement although the CTG can pick it up. If you’re not happy still today you can go back in and ask for a medical review - i.e. a dr but you’ll probably have to wait. Generally it’s instinct on the mothers part combined with a protocol they follow about other indications and base heart rate to determine if there’s anything to be concerned about. Hope you feel better today.

AliceRR · 10/12/2018 09:17

@lanalawr @AliceRR Thanks. I find it really difficult. She does move some days more than others anyway sobum trying not to get too worried but then I know yesterday someone was saying that it’s the strength of the movements too. But then I also think I’ve read the movements will feel different as baby gets bigger but not sure. I did have some bigger movements yesterday while at the hospital and later on so felt better.

magdela · 11/12/2018 16:42

@powkin @camsie30 I'm in East London too, in Forest Gate so about half-way between you two! Have been lurking quietly on this forum since about 8 weeks so thought it was about time to make my debut. It would be really great to meet some other local mums if either/both of you are up for it :)

powkin · 11/12/2018 16:50

@camsie30 @magdela - I’d definitely be up for that! I’d like to suggest somewhere other than Westfield but it feels a bit inevitable! Feel free to PM me x
