@PurpleFlower1983 Is it attached to a hospital of a separate building?
I wanted to go to our midwife led unit last time but my waters went early so prevented me going but with hindsight I’m glad I didn’t as I would have been blue lighted to the hospital as it is in a separate town.
This time I am going to choose to go to the midwife unit that is in the hospital so just a short walk down the corridor to the birth suite or theatre if needed.

LittleKitty1985 · 19/11/2018 20:34

@PurpleFlower1983 I may be. I initially told my midwife I wanted to be in the hospital so I could have ALL THE DRUGS but she advised that as I'm low risk I should start off in the midwife unit first. The hospital is on the same site if needed. I've got tours of both booked for January.

Hermagsjesty · 19/11/2018 20:40

Both my two were born in the midwife led unit, it’s right next to the hospital though.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/11/2018 20:48

We have one in our town that is a 13 minute ride away from the main hospital then there is a birth centre at the hospital.

SquirtlesMumAgain · 19/11/2018 20:56

We missed their criteria last time but a friend gave birth there and said it was great.
Don't even know if the hospital here has one now we have moved but know it wouldn't be an option with the worries about a small baby.

HidCat · 19/11/2018 21:03

@melissa112 I'd get onto your midwife for a referral ASAP, I can't imagine how hard it is with such high anxiety levels. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum and pray it's positive news sooner rather than later.

@march19 congratulations and welcome. PEP does not sound like fun - I hope you've been able to manage it.

@cardboard33 sounds like you had a very honest rep at JL. Makes a refreshing change!

@PurpleFlower1983 my local midwife led unit is lovely and I know several people who've laboured there. I'm choosing to go to the hospital though as it's 25miles away and having had a quick labour ending in assistance last time I'd rather not take the chance of a late transfer. Two friends who were low risk and having home births were blue lighted during labour and I'd find that too damn stressful.

Marmite2018 · 19/11/2018 21:12

@PurpleFlower1983 my intention is to go MLU. At Frimley, the MLU is attached to the main labour ward so that helps. It looks amazing on the website, I'm quite excited about it... maybe a bit odd!

TheWanderlust · 20/11/2018 07:29

I'm the same as @Marmite2018 ... the MLU at Frimley gets lots of positive feedback and I have been fortunate to meet some of the midwives when in for checks as they were helping out due to the unit being quiet.

In an odd kind of way, being in and out a couple of times is helping me to prepare for labour because I've been up to the ward so know what it looks like... very helpful for my anxiety!

Kee80 · 20/11/2018 07:57

Morning all. Can I ask your advice on prams/travel systems. Do you know of any where the actual pram base converts into a carry cot, not a separate carry cot. Nothing to expensive?
Also I have quite a small boot (Vauxhall's corsa) so something that's folds quite compact to.

cardboard33 · 20/11/2018 08:59

@melissa121 with the which membership you get 1 month for free anyway before you have to commit so if you decided it was too much money (I think it's about £11 a month) you could read up on everything (or just download it.. they download quite well into Excel) and then go back to it in a few months when you need it. I think it would help having a starting point where you know it's impartial and they also have a lot of information about the different types of the same product.

@purpleflower1985 I'd be going there if it weren't for my default high risk set up. Our local hospital has 2 units on site and the default for low risk births is the MLU and then you're only automatically put into the "traditional" one if you're difficult and high risk like me. Then they just transfer women who need the extra input from doctors/extra pain relief between the two. As I said it's all in the same maternity part of the hospital which is maybe why their default is MLU.

@kee80 do you mean where the pushchair bit also lies completely flat so negating the need for a separate carry cot? I think a lot of them we looked at did (again which have a filter for that on their search tool, although we found it wasn't 100% accurate) but we decided to get the separate carry cot too as then the baby can sleep in it when we visit our parents etc.

Kee80 · 20/11/2018 09:05

@cardboard33 yes just like that. We've seen one in mothercare it's the mothercare journey. It's a nice pram but not sure of the quality and how long it would last. May have to do some more research. There's so much choice out there. Will give the which a try thank you

Hermagsjesty · 20/11/2018 10:11

@kee80 I think we’re going to go for a Bugaboo Bee this time - which is suitable from birth without the carrycot. I tried it out in the shop and it feels light and zippy, which is good for me as I’m in the city and on public transport a lot. We had an Oyster (with carrycot) for my older two, it was okay but is now completely trashed!

SquirtlesMumAgain · 20/11/2018 11:00

@Kee80 out chicco urban seat is a seat and carrycot in one (using some zips). I know a friend who got a stroller type that laid flat, which was another option.
We have a Corsa and we have to take a wheel off the urban to fit but wasn't too much of an issue (just had a bag in the car boot for it if it was muddy). Boot size was an issue with most of the ones we tried as we had ruled out any with a carry cot

Gronk27 · 20/11/2018 11:05

We’re about to go and try out the five prams at the in laws so I’ll report back!

Kee80 · 20/11/2018 16:17

@SquirtlesMumAgain thanks for that I will have a look at those.

Good luck have fun @Gronk27

melissa112 · 20/11/2018 18:29

@cardboard33 oh yes I'll definitely give the £1 trial a go then! Thanks for the heads up. I can see myself spending a lot of time on there Grin

I haven't checked if the hospital I'm going to has a midwife led unit. That's something I'll pop on the list for next time I go.

How are people finding the time is going? Sometimes I think it's going really slow, like I think back to when I had bad morning sickness and it feels like so long ago. Although was reminded of it today as threw up everywhere at work for some reason and still feel sick now. Hope it's not coming back! 16 weeks to go and feels like ages away!

Gronk27 · 20/11/2018 18:42

So we’re having the icandy pear 2 apple for when she is a bit older and a Cosetto for new born/car seat/carry cot. We didn’t see the Baby Jogger.

Didn’t like the Silver Cross (an old version) Maxi Cosi or the Jane Nurse Dakaar as much.

Murphyrocks · 20/11/2018 18:50

@melissa112 yes I'm finding it quite slow too - and also found the morning sickness has crept back at 23/24 weeks although it's remained pretty mild and intermittent (currently 25+2) so havent bothered doing anything about it. If anything I'm finding it's just making me a bit less piggy which is probably no bad thing! 🐷🤰🏼

Marmite2018 · 20/11/2018 19:02

That's reassuring @TheWanderlust. Sorry you've been in there a few times already though!

fanks · 20/11/2018 19:19

Hello everyone!

I've had 2 home births (loved them) one labour ward birth (induced not so nice) and then one born on MLU (fantastic) would definitely recommend as the next best thing to a home birth!

We had a Phil and teds which lays flat with cocoon if needed rather than carry cot. Currently using bugaboo donkey and bee! In fact bee has a cocoon and doesn't need carry cot either.

None of mine have had cots so can't help there.

WhatALearningCurve · 20/11/2018 19:31

@melissa112 I feel like time is massively dragging. On the one hand it doesn't seem like February (when I'll finish work) is too far away, especially when it's so close to December, but on the other hand - each day feels about three times as long. On the way back from work today I genuinely thought it was Thursday. (I also woke up thinking it was Wednesday). I don't think it helps that I leave the house at 7am and get home at 7pm from work.

Basically I am just counting down the days till I finish work now ha

Wineandchoccy · 20/11/2018 19:40

@melissa112 it seems to be going really fast to me but I have dd who is 3 1/2 and excited about the baby and Christmas and from next week I am using some annual leave so only working 4 day weeks until January then I only have 6 weeks left so the end is in sight.
When I was expecting dd time seemed to drag especially this middle bit once the 20 week scams are done it seems a while until midwife appointments start filling your diary.

SquirtlesMumAgain · 20/11/2018 20:31

I think having gone through it before at the same time of year (roughly) has helped - dont know if you have found the same @wineandchoccy.
We went on a babymoon in the Feb before having DS... Don't think we'll have that luxury this time though!!!!

Wineandchoccy · 20/11/2018 20:41

Yes @SquirtlesMumAgain I think with Christmas as well it kind of makes the time speed up.

We are having 1 night away together @SquirtlesMumAgain which is not quite the same the same Grin

Wineandchoccy · 20/11/2018 20:42
