Re ultrasounds I think it depends on your weight and how far along you are. At approx 5 weeks my nurse tried an external ultrasound first on me and when that didn’t work she tried an internal (although it was too early for that even!). They couldn’t even find one of my ovaries on the internal ultrasound so not sure what was going on there!

@Kescilly an internal ultrasound is much more comfortable than a smear test as it’s just a small wand. It was fine! Whenever I’d have smears before I would wear a long skirt as it made me feel more comfortable than having to take trousers off completely. Although now I’ve had a few I don’t really care anymore as they see it all the time!

@Spun I think the majority of early ultrasounds will be internal anyway and I don’t think it’s any trouble so I wouldn’t worry about it!

JBCG · 22/10/2018 18:10

@stellarfox totally agree. The internal I had today was absolutely fine and I always think doctors have seen it all so I doubt mine is anything too unusual! I was very nervous first internal one I had but now they're fine, not painful at all. Smears on the other hand I find hell!

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 22/10/2018 18:20

@Kescilly you have nothing to worry about! I had a BMI of 34 in my last pregnancy and had an external scan at 8+2 and saw everything nice and clearly. I had 2 internal scans with my MMC last year and they're nothing to worry about either - it was a white wand with a rounded end and I would say it was slimmer than the average willy Grin

Kescilly · 22/10/2018 19:01

Thanks for all the reassurances everyone, not sure how I'd get through my anxiety without you guys!

I'm going to see if I can find a skirt to wear to the scan so I can be prepared either way. Or maybe a tunic with leggings?

Tryingtoswallow101 · 22/10/2018 19:05

Hello! Happy news in the swallow household. Bean and heartbeat have just been seen!

Measuring at 6+1 so been put back 6 days with EDD now 16th June!

toasterstrudle · 22/10/2018 20:15

Congratulations @Tryingtoswallow101 ! So lovely to have some scans and heartbeats on the thread!

mindthechaos · 22/10/2018 20:25

@Tryingtoswallow101 congratulations! Glad you got some great news!

Fabuluce · 22/10/2018 20:44

Congratulations to those with successful scans and handholds to those who have to wait.

Kescilly, as others have said, internal scans are really nothing to worry about. I had a hideous coil fitting which left me in tears and pain for months and felt pretty stressed about my first scan at the fertility clinic but my lovely specialist reassured me it would be fine, and it totally was! They may have to wiggle around a little but there really is no reason to worry. I don't even know how many internals I've had now (6 rounds of IVF and one successful pregnancy means the world and his wife have looked up my foof) so I can definitely say I'm experienced in this particular arena!

Tryingtoswallow101 · 22/10/2018 21:00

Thanks all. Pleased as punch we are.

You can’t see much but here is our little bean Grin

jacquejacque · 22/10/2018 21:01

Oh @Tryingtoswallow101 that is FABULOUS news!!!!

Fabuluce · 22/10/2018 21:06

What a relief that must be Swallow!

Kescilly · 22/10/2018 21:10

Oh how wonderful! Congrats on your little bean!

Tryingtoswallow101 · 22/10/2018 21:24

Thanks ladies!

Yes much more relaxed now - starting to actually believe it. I’ve been in denial.

It took a while to get a clear picture because the lady kept complimenting me on my ‘fantastically full bladder’ which made me laugh. (I’m a nervous laugher). She said it about 6 times, in an eerily calm voice.

DH spent the whole time like this Confused

stellarfox · 22/10/2018 21:54

@Tryingtoswallow101 congratulations!

I’m considering just booking a private scan for the day we get back from holiday (weds). Although I might get back and have a letter with an appointment for an nhs scan next week. I feel like I’ve waited ages already though and I just want to know if it’s ok and actually happening!

jacquejacque · 22/10/2018 22:29

@Tryingtoswallow101 literally the same thing happened to me! I feel like we are living the same life in different towns

curlyrebel · 22/10/2018 22:39

@SassehMonsta that's good to know you can opt out of the glucose blood monitoring. It all seemed so long and I remember having to starve myself! I had the all clear last time so should be fine if I eat well again during this pregnancy.

Regarding changing midwifes, I live in London and I don't remember seeing the same mw more than once with pregnancy 1!
In fact, according to my GP I'll be lucky to see anyone before 12 weeks! No examinations or scans as yet. Still just going on those two red lines!

Reastiepeace · 23/10/2018 07:16

Re the glucose fasting test. Just to warn you I refused mine last time as my nausea was so bad that I had to eat fequently and I know fasting and then drinking the sugar solution would make me so sick. I got a ticking off from a nurse who gave me a huge guilt tri about how I was putting my babies safety in jeopardy Hmm Confused Shock . I said I would not take the test but I was happy for then to treat me as if I was diabetic for the rest of the pg, so I had to take multiple daily blood sugar pin prick readings and see a diabetic nurse. All my readings were always perfectly normal apart from once I had a slightly high reading after a very sugary breakfast (think it was 8.3 and normal is 4-7) and they were very Confused about this one random off reading and said it proved I was diabetic but it was barely above normal. I’m glad they take these things seriously but be aware you may have to effectively be treated as if you were a diabetic if you refuse the test which also means every year for the rest of your life they get you to do a boood test to check boood sugar —although I don’t bother with it every year and they don’t chase it up—

coastergirl · 23/10/2018 07:57

I had GD in my first pregnancy and the only follow up test I've had is the standard repeat GTT when he was six weeks old. Never been asked to have anything else.

I'll obviously be having the test again this time. Last time they didn't test me routinely. My BMI was slightly above the NICE guidelines for testing, but in my area they use a higher cut off point. When I was 34 weeks, I had a scan to check my low-lying placenta and it was noted that baby had a large tummy. I was using the one-to-one midwife service, and my midwife had come to the appointment with me. She questioned the consultant about why I hadn't been tested, and they still refused, so she tested me herself. It wasn't easy to control, and it terrifies me to think what could have happened if I hadn't been diagnosed. The risk factors for baby are way too scary. The test itself was horrible. My veins are rubbish and I was feeling particularly crap that day, so she was rooting around under my skin with the needle before giving up and going to my hands. I can understand why people would avoid it, but it's worth it for me.

pollykins151 · 23/10/2018 08:07

I had GD last time and likely to again this time. I personally didn't mind the test though the drink was fairly vile and the waiting around boring. I only had the standard blood test 6 weeks after the baby also

I personally didn't mind the extra checks etc after the diagnosis as got extra scans and appointments so was always sure baby was fine.

The blood sugar monitoring was a pest but made me eat really healthily. So much so 6 weeks post baby I weighed 4 stone less than at my booking in app. 🤷🏻‍♀️

annihall · 23/10/2018 08:47

Had a horrible morning of being sick, went to work anyway because I was at home yesterday (employers don't know yet) and on my way a lorry pushed me off the road into the field and didn't even stop to see if I'm ok. Sat there crying in the car for 30 minutes, eventually made it to work but sitting here now being miserable and feeling sorry for myself. I just want to hide at home for a couple of weeks now :(
Sorry for the rant!

SassehMonsta · 23/10/2018 08:51

Anni! What a shit morning! How are you doing? Have you told work about the lorry incident?

I have agreed to blood glucose monitoring, as last time they weren't happy with my 6 week results. They asked me to go back yearly but never actually invited me back at all! So I'm aware of it, but will happily just test my blood sugars and avoid white bread and fruity breakfasts - back to granola and plain yoghurt!

Last time with GD, I had a 6lb 8oz baby. It was well controlled!

SassehMonsta · 23/10/2018 08:52

Though until I'm testing my bloods I will continue to eat chocolate in the car on the way to work.
