Sorry - that was a bit of an essay Confused
Have a day off today so just caught up on several pages which prompted the random waffle...

Tbh I don’t think it will have occurred to her that she will be sent home without baby but I know they won’t let her stay if it’s for 6 weeks - tbh at 4 days they tried to discharge me and baby was in for a week. Reassuring to hear that it might not be 6 weeks I couldn’t imagine going home without my baby tbh. I think it’s because he was so small anyway and then being born early as well. Just feel so sorry for her! She’s also in the midlands (I’m in london) so can’t even visit!

@Since2016 tell her to look if it is a unicef baby friendly hospital. The rules around keeping mum and baby together are more enforced and protected. Espesially if shes nursing too.

Hope the new hospital isnt to far away for her.

What a fright Flowers

Whew, I'm so relieved! Our midwife unit has been closed due to staffing recently so low-risk women have had to give birth in the attached labour ward instead. I was worried it would stay closed, but it's now reopened! Hoping I stay low risk so I can give birth there as the rooms are much nicer!!

What's everyone else's plans for the birth?

Since2016 · 31/10/2018 09:50

@notquiteagandt thanks - am holding back for now as I think she’s probably feeling quite overwhelmed. Have told her to ask if she’s got any questions though.

Re birth plans - I’m opting for an ELCS. Did a scout around for opinions on here earlier this week and general consensus is it should be agreed no issue. Hoping I get a date at my cons appt in December!

@Since2016 wishing your friend and her little one all the best. Like lots of others here have said let’s hope they’re out sooner than 6 weeks.

@Celebelly they have closed lots of MLUs by me too but i’m still planning to give birth in one it’s just further away from home (though nearer to the hospital if anything goes wrong which does make me feel a little more relaxed).

Fredthespider · 31/10/2018 10:29

One of my trusts midwife led hospitals (4 beds - 1 birth a day apparently) has shut temporarily until the end of Feb, I hadn't planned to go there but everyone who would have used it is now being sent to the smaller midwife led unit (3 beds - 2 births a day) that I was hoping to use. So that may mean it's full and I can't get in which will be really disappointing. They've said if they manage to recruit enough midwives it'll reopen early but we'll see, they only planned to close it for about a month or so :(

Lulabell1 · 31/10/2018 11:07

@since2016 They tel everyone 6weeks they told me the same while i was in labour and I went home next day because DD was 7.11lb

Lulabell1 · 31/10/2018 11:12

Never done a birth plan i just really hope I dont end up having Csection have a deep concern about epidural and I just no I will have a panic attack but you cannot plan these things unfortunately

twiglet · 31/10/2018 11:21

@celebelly I originally was looking at waterbirths but with a low lying placenta everything is on hold until my 34 week scan to confirm if its moved and if its moved enough to be in the midwife unit rather than the connecting consultant led unit.

I have a feeling we have the same hospital choice of Aberdeen although the area it covers is massive!

emalady · 31/10/2018 11:21

@frowningflamingo are you on the PMGUK Facebook page? It's quite handy for overly anxious Dr's who have seen more worst case scenarios than is helpful. My midwife was really good and is coming to my house on my day off so I don't have to cancel clinics but guess that varies a lot depending on the midwife /area.

@Celebelly I'm probably being induced if not delivered by 39/40 weeks so will have to be on labour ward. Probably better for my anxiety but more likely to have instruments etc so not ideal.

FrowningFlamingo · 31/10/2018 11:29

Yes I am @emalady - and in one of the PMGUK winter babies groups (I think there's accidentally two groups).
That's helpful, I said to my midwife that I was worried about time off and she rather sharply told me I was legally entitled to it. Work have been lovely though to be fair, it's all in my head. I think I just need to relax about it. I had to leave early at very short notice yesterday to get to the GP and they were great at talking work from me to make sure I got there in time.

@lulabell1 I suspect it's not a universal thing but my trust run an antenatal workshop for women who are concerned about anaesthetics, it's run by the head anaesthetist and she goes through it all and discusses your concerns as a group. I'm def not sure it's a common thing but it's worth asking I guess!

Celebelly · 31/10/2018 11:32

@twiglet Yes, Aberdeen! I live in the Mearns so I could also use the Arbroath MLU but it's not attached to a hospital so I'd have to be transferred to Ninewells if I needed anything and that makes me a bit anxious so think Aberdeen is best option as everything is on site there. Not really looking forward to the drive while in labour tho! Especially in early Feb 😬

twiglet · 31/10/2018 11:51

@celebelly 😂 I had looked at exactly the same thing as South Aberdeenshire before finding out about low lying placenta as Arbroath have more birthing pools.

But the A90 can be bad enough with cold weather let alone the A92!

lanalawr · 31/10/2018 12:02

@Celebelly I'm planning to use the MLU again this time and be in the water again. I'm lucky that I live less than 10 mins drive from our hospital and the MLU is attached. Will see how it goes though because I only got there half an hour before DD was born and they say subsequent babies are usually quicker. I toyed with the idea of a home birth but I don't want my parents in the house (they'd be looking after DD) and I don't want to send DD away for the night. I don't think DH would be comfortable with DD being around for the birth although it wouldn't bother me (and I can't see a 2.5 yo being concerned either).

bubblybrit · 31/10/2018 12:50

Just wondering if anyone has advised their work of when they want maternity leave to start? I’m hoping to use some annual leave beforehand but this needs signed off by management. My manager is off sick so doubt I’ll be able to confirm this date before Friday (which is 15 weeks before baby is due).

What will happen if I confirm the date to them at a later stage as this will be outwith the required notice period?

twiglet · 31/10/2018 13:03

@bubblybrit check your maternity policy mine you can change the date as long as you give 4 wks notice also if off sick with pregnancy related in the last 4 weeks prior to the start date then maternity leave automatically starts

Fredthespider · 31/10/2018 13:03

@bubblybrit I had to officially tell work I was pregnant, which I did ages ago so I could get the time off work, but the form I needed to fill in to tell them when I planned to take AL and then start maternity leave just needed to be with them no later than 28 days from when I "intend to commence your leave". So you might have more time?

lanalawr · 31/10/2018 13:19

@bubblybrit our forms have to be in 15 weeks before the due date but we can change the start date of maternity after that if we give 28 days notice. I'd double check your policy. Is there another manager you could go to?

bubblybrit · 31/10/2018 14:09

Thanks ladies. I’ve emailed HR to check. I have already given them my Mat B1 form but I also need to complete an online leave notification which I can’t do without confirming dates. Would be great if I could complete with a provisional date for now but I’m sure that they will keep me right. They are just so slow in coming back to anyone!

We all work in different teams so it’s only my manager that can confirm how much annual leave I can take upfront. Very frustrating x

Lookingforadvice123 · 31/10/2018 14:18

Since2016 sending lots of good wishes and positive vibes to your friend and her little boy. Hope he's not kept in too long.

A friend had her baby at 31 weeks in February, he was kept in until 37 weeks so 6 weeks. No idea if this was standard or if it was depending on his condition. He's over 8 months now and such a sturdy, lovely little thing. You would never guess he was so early. My friend wasn't able to stay beyond her being discharged as a patient, sadly.

Alicejj8x · 31/10/2018 15:06

24 weeks today and a big viability milestone 😍

Never ever thought after 2 MMC I would be preg again let alone 24 weeks!!

Have got a horrible sore throat so a cold is on it's way, boo. I've dodged so many recently, was bound to happen.

Is there anything we can take for a cold bar paracetamol? I know lemsips and night nurse are a no no (shame as I love night nurse!).
