For the gender, me and OH have chosen to find out at the 20 week scan which is in just under a couple of weeks now. It was an easy decision for us to take as we both really want to know, this being the first time around for us both. I'm already referring to baby as 'he' for no reason whatsoever so will have to change that depending on what we're told on the day. I think for me it's about making it a little more real and just being a pragmatic person. I'd like to buy some gender specific items before the birth perhaps, but also when I do talk about baby or to baby I'd like to be able to use 'he' or 'she'

Wineandchoccy · 17/10/2018 11:07

We didn’t find out with dd and haven’t found out this time although I do have a 33 and 36 week scan so it may be hard to hide at that point. @AssumeItWasSomethingClever.
I had a tough labour and the not knowing helped me get through it and I was the one to announce that it was a girl when she was placed on my chest and the feeling was amazing, although I would have been elated either way after 59 hours in labour Grin
I feel like this one is another girl and I would be happy with either sex but probably would like another girl.

wordsmithereens · 17/10/2018 11:49

Similar reasons to others on here, I wanted to avoid gender wistfulness (love that term!) and felt it'd be easier to bond with the baby. And we're already struggling with names so having only one set to focus on will make it a lot easier.

@badbadbeans glad you've reached a compromise with dh that works for you.
@toastfiend hope the scan is a positive experience for you!
@bluebelltulip congratulations on making it through with the PhD, what a massive achievement. They do take over your life, so it's understandable the transition will be odd - good thing you've got the next thing lined up that will take over your life?

ballanj · 17/10/2018 11:55

Quick question although I'm pretty confident I know the answer. I have a mild case of thrush thanks to a commando treadmill run on Monday (sorry for tmi) and want to nip it in the bud as the itching is so annoying. I normally treat with an internal cream/pessary and then cream around the vulva. I believe this is okay, should I check with a GP or midwife first do you think?

Nightmanagerfan · 17/10/2018 13:34

Afternoon all. Still on holiday in Greece and unfortunately had a bad bout of food poisoning last night - was up from 1am with d&v. I think it was some chicken - we were in a super fancy restaurant but it didn’t taste right to me so I only ate a few mouthfuls.

I can keep fluids down now and have been drinking Powerade and water and eating crackers. Could the baby be hurt? All the advice says listeria can cause miscarriage/early labour etc but I don’t want to overreact especially as I’m keeping fluids down now.

Nightmanagerfan · 17/10/2018 13:35

@ballanj a pharmacist could probably tell you I expect?

Miami81 · 17/10/2018 14:06

@ballanj if you have the midwife number I would just give them a buzz?
@Nightmanagerfan I am sorry. What a pain. Worst food poisoning I ever had was in Greece, in Athens on the way back. It was awful. 4 hr flight.
Anyway sorry I am waffling. Loads of liquids, it sounds like you have gotten off lightly. Hopefully you will be back to normal soon.
Maybe something salty if you can stomach it.
My sister had awful 4 day food poisoning when she was preggers, she managed to keep drinking water, baby was all fine.

wordsmithereens · 17/10/2018 14:19

@nightmanagerfan Oh no, how awful. I had a really bad bout of stomach sickness a few weeks ago, although I think mine was viral. Midwives weren't overly concerned, told me if I couldn't keep water down for longer than 24 hours or if I had a fever for longer than 24 hours, or one that didn't respond to Paracetamol, that's when they'd want to see me go to hospital to get checked out. Otherwise liquids, rest, self care. I asked about listeria as well and they said if what I ate was cooked, it should be fine. It was really worrying, you feel so awful anyway with d&v and the idea of baby sitting amidst that wasn't great. But baby was happy as larry at scan yesterday, so no negative consequences. Hope you feel better soon! Xxx

SquirtlesMumAgain · 17/10/2018 14:50

@wineandchoccy we had late scans last time but still didn't find out. I think at the 34 week the sonographer said to just look away at one point as that was where she was heading but nothing at 36 weeks as everything was just too big.

@Nightmanagerfan sorry you're suffering. Just keep drinking and resting. Maybe mention it to your midwife when you get back. Cooking should kill listeria so as long as the chicken wasn't pink hopefully it was just another bug causing it.

Wineandchoccy · 17/10/2018 16:37

I have just had a pregnancy massage it was amazing Smile

toastfiend · 17/10/2018 16:48

Sorry to hear you're not well @Nightmanagerfan. As others have said, if it was cooked I wouldn't be too concerned about listeria. Maybe give your midwife a call if you're worried and just try to stay as hydrated as possible. Hope you're feeling better soon!

Just back from our 20 week scan, all looked fine. Baby was facing us so we have a couple of fairly terrifying face on pictures, which look pretty appropriate for upcoming Halloween decorations! πŸ˜‚ Also one nice profile one though and a cute one of its little feet. It was so active in there, playing with its toes and bouncing up and down. Made it difficult for the sonographer to get some measurements as it was moving so much, but managed in the end. Very, very relieved and feel like I can start to get a bit more excited now as it all seems a bit more real!

Angelmiracle · 17/10/2018 17:06

@ballanj yes safe to use I keep getting thrush. I used canestan.

BadBadBeans · 17/10/2018 17:19

@toastfiend hope the scan went well

@Bluebelltulip so you were writing up your PhD with morning sickness then?! Hats off to you!

@Nightmanagerfan how absolutely horrid for you. I know little about food poisoning and pregnancy but others here seem to have given you some sound advice. Really hope you feel better soon. And on holiday too! So frustrating.

Yes I feel much better having agreed with DH that we can both have what we want regarding finding out the sex! Added bonus is that it has galvanised him into discussing names as all conversation about names will be off once we've had the scan. We have a girl's name picked out already, and I came up with a boy's one out of nowhere last night that I LOVE and that DH rather liked, and somehow I feel far more excited now that there are potential names floating around!

Angelmiracle · 17/10/2018 18:04

That's fantastic news @toastfiend πŸ˜€

@Wineandchoccy I would love one of those how nice!!! My sister treated us both to pregnancy facials I was only 9 weeks with a bit of head shoulder and arm massage it was bliss.

ballanj · 17/10/2018 18:08

@Angelmiracle thanks for that, thought it would be okay to use. Went into boots and asked a pharmacist to check and they said they couldn't give me anything anyway as I've told them I'm pregnant so they can't give out anything to me grrrrr. I'll nip into another Boots and pick up a tube.

Nightmanagerfan · 17/10/2018 18:23

@wordsmithereens @toastfiend @squirtlesmumagain thanks for the advice- still feeling grim but have drunk almost 2l of water/Powerade and eaten some crackers I’m between sleeping most of the day. Such bad luck on holiday. I ended up working the first few days here due to a crisis and then got sick. Best laid plans and all that... thanks for putting my mind at rest about listeria too. I do still have a slight temperature but will keep an eye on it. DH has been v worried about the baby.

ballanj · 17/10/2018 18:50

Congrats on a lovely scan @toastfiend can we see some pics? I ask because I've heard about these terrifying 'face forward' pictures and I'm just sheer intrigued as to what they look like πŸ˜‚

ballanj · 17/10/2018 18:51

@Nightmanagerfan you poor thing, hope you feel better too. I don't think you have to worry about listeria by sounds of it and you're keeping well hydrated that's the main thing. Hope it passes real soon.

toastfiend · 17/10/2018 19:31

Thanks all!!

@ballanj just for you, try not to have nightmares, it's genuinely terrifying. To quote my brother in law: "This picture will haunt my dreams..." πŸ˜‚

HidCat · 17/10/2018 20:29

@Nightmanagerfan I hope it settles down for you soon.

@toastfiend I live that picture! Ours looked straight on at the 12 week scan and it was freaky. It's like they're peeking into the camera and posing lol.

LittleKitty1985 · 17/10/2018 20:46

@toastfiend Actual LOL

SquirtlesMumAgain · 17/10/2018 21:08

@toastfiend that is one amazing picture!!!!

BadBadBeans · 17/10/2018 21:25

@toastfiend So glad your scan went well. And thanks for sharing the pic - that is pretty hilarious!

I double-checked names with DH tonight and he loves them both. So we are done! How easy was that?! (Except for the nightmare that is choosing middle names, of course.)

ballanj · 17/10/2018 21:30

Oh wow @toastfiend πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I see what you mean now!! That's made me chuckle, it's a full on bold stare!
