Is everyone getting the free flu jab ? Weighing the pros and cons as I've heard a few friends got really ill after having it. Iv never had the flu myself but I run a pub so I'm more than likely going to be exposed to it at some point during the pregnancy

MissSmith80 · 11/10/2018 19:52

@Amolly
I am getting mine tomorrow. I always have it - not to protect me really but to protect the vulnerable people I come into contact with (I work for the NHS). But this year I have the added incentive of wanting to protect little bean. The couple of days I might get of feeling a bit groggy will be worth it, after all I've felt pretty rubbish for a few weeks now, a couple of extra days won't cause me any harm!!

SurfingOwl · 11/10/2018 20:34

The flu jab, like the whooping cough one, passes to your baby and provides them with protection as well.

MynameisJune · 11/10/2018 21:14

Yes getting the flu jab, this years is supposed to be very effective and they’re expecting flu to be quite harsh this year plus I’m asthmatic so have it anyway.

@sprinkleofsunshine a private scan won’t inform your NHS date. They’ll measure baby and give you an indication but the NHS will pretty much ignore it until you’ve had your dating scan with them. Also the foetus is so small at this stage that accurate measurements aren’t easy to get. That’s why the NHS wait until 12 weeks to avoid unnecessary worry and further scanning. Fingers crossed for you.

sprinkleofsunshine · 11/10/2018 21:38

Thanks @MynameisJune this was an nhs scan not private but I have heard it's hard at this stage to measure effectively given how small it is still.

MimiSunshine · 11/10/2018 21:42

@Amolly I’ve already had the flu jab at 10 wks. Had my booking in appointment at 8 wks and the midwife referred me straight for it as my GP was ruining a clinic soon after.

No symptoms for me other than I did feel really tired that afternoon but that could have just been pregnancy tiredness.

However I’ve had flu twice and it’s not like having a bad cold, it’s awful, last time I had it I couldn’t move as my body ached so badly it was like I’d been in a car accident. I was crying in pain.

Some unlucky people do get some symptoms but often they’re coming down with something anyway

TooManyBooksTooLittleTime · 11/10/2018 21:59

I was offered mine straight after my booking in appointment, I just had to join the queue for the drop in jab appointments. I haven't felt any different since having it (still sick and tired as before!). I've only had flu once and I'm keen to avoid having it again, particularly while pregnant.

Amolly · 11/10/2018 23:30

Thanks very much all. I'll book in for mine then.

zoClueless · 11/10/2018 23:42

I also had my flu jab just over a week ago. No effects here that were noticeable over the general pregnancy tiredness. My arm was tender later that day and the next but nothing extreme.

fadgadget · 12/10/2018 11:53

I have also had the flu vaccine, it doesn't hurt though my arm was a little sore the next day. You shouldn't really be unwell after it as it is not a 'live' vaccine, so maybe just coincidence/pregnancy sickness when people are.

Beckyv88 · 12/10/2018 13:11

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well and not suffering too much with the nausea and other symptoms.

It’s been a while since I posted since being quite busy with work and travelling. Travelling was the worst! Was so nauseated the whole time then got really sick, freaked out and went to the doctor (in America £££££) but they ended up scanning me and saw a heartbeat which was very reassuring.

Has anyone else gained weight already? I’m about 4 pounds heavier and only 8 weeks :/

HalfBloodPrincess · 12/10/2018 14:00

I’ve put on a stone already!

Dimblebimble · 12/10/2018 14:14

@Beckyv88 I'm 8 weeks and I've gained about 2lbs. I read somewhere that you're meant to gain a maximum of 5lb in the first trimester. Having said that I just ate an entire small dominos pizza to myself, it was the only thing I fancied.

I'm having a really bad day. Completely lethargic and beginning to realise I can't keep up with everything. I'm an academic and often come home and work on research projects in the evening, but increasingly I leave work with the intention of doing so but but by the time I sit down and have dinner I'm ready for bed ☹️ feel crap and like I'm letting my colleagues on various projects down but I can't explain to them why I'm being so rubbish.

Floofsquidge · 12/10/2018 15:37

I've gained 5kg Confused
I know why though so I'm not too stressed. I am normally quite active at the gym and do weight training, but I just haven't had the energy so the weight is piling on. Hoping if I can at least get back to yoga that should help.

Beckyv88 · 12/10/2018 15:48

@dimblebimble yes I’m almost at the max. already, need to really watch myself with eating - though I feel I’m hardly eating more than before!

Oh I know how you feel. I was yawning non-stop in a meeting early and could see a director looking at me. And when I was travelling my colleagues were out drinking every night - I skipped so much and they probably just think I’m boring now. Oh well!

rosettesforjill · 12/10/2018 17:18

I've put on quite a bit but not sure exactly how much as I wasn't weighing myself beforehand! BMI 25 at booking in at 11+2 today though so not too bad, and I no longer feel like I want to eat EVERYTHING, so hopefully I can keep a bit more of a handle on it from now on!

Filouise · 12/10/2018 17:51

I had my flu jab on Monday and was completely fine afterwards...
Is anyone else feeling really dizzy and lightheaded? My midwife said it was normal but I can't get anything done with it 😣
I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure I've gained weight everything feels tighter but I suppose that could be to do with constant bloat 😂

UntilTheVeryEnd · 12/10/2018 17:54

I’ve put on a heap of weight - not sure exactly how much in Lbs but my knickers don’t fit so that says a lot about the size of my butt. I have embraced the fact that I’m going to gain weight. My DH has just been weighed offshore and he has gained 14lb so it’s not just me hehe!

tinyradish · 12/10/2018 17:58

I've gained a fair bit of weight due to eating being the only thing that can help with nausea(sometimes)& the fact I've gone from fairly active gym goer to barely moving. Would be very interested to know how much but we don't have scales at home!

I'm guessing around 5lbs at 11 weeks - gonna have to go & use my mums scales because I so want to know now.

Popsalot15 · 12/10/2018 18:07

Ditto with you all! I’ve gone from can’t keep anything down and losing weight to carbs all day every dayyy. Just want plain food and unfortunately they are all potatoes!

UntilTheVeryEnd · 12/10/2018 18:29

I just LOVE bread! Bread should be king. I genuinely had a ham and salad sandwich for breakfast today Confused don’t know what’s happening to me

frankiefumbles · 12/10/2018 18:47

@Filouise I get dizzy when I stand up or move suddenly. So I need to just take things a bit easier.

I don't understand the weight thing. I'm a bit upset because I suddenly look like a blimp, and I've hardly been eating. I'm guessing this must be something the body is doing on purpose. I'm eating less than a third what I normally do and yet seemingly porking out daily. I've gone up a cup size already and now that's tight again, and what's bothering me most is my tummy! It's not like there is a bump, but the whole thing has suddenly gone flabby.

If id been eating plenty I would be okay with it but it's so frustrating I've barely had a meal a day and yet this! Let's hope it's all worthwhile.

earlybirdhasanap · 12/10/2018 18:51

I've put on half a lb but I know from last time it's nothing to go by as I didn't put on any weight in the first trimester but by the end I was 2 1/2 st heavierBlushShock. I'm hoping I don't put on that much again as I'm still a stone heavier than my previous pre pregnancy weight.

Beckyv88 · 13/10/2018 12:18

It seems like it’s pretty normal then, even this early on!

It’s hard to accept that my body is going to change so much, but I know it’s worth it. I guess now I realise how much of a sacrifice my mum made - she was an 8 her whole life til she had 3!

SurfingOwl · 13/10/2018 15:34

I’m so big now I can only wear maternity clothes. It doesn't bode well for the next six months.
