Hey all! So lovely to read about you all feeling movement - when roughly did you feel those bubbles? I'm 14+2 and so excited to feel the popcorn pop!!

craftymum01 · 20/08/2018 16:26

@AliceRR yes it really is. I know of 5 due in February now!

Baby160P · 20/08/2018 16:46

I feel mega stretching pain today. Not sure who wrote it 😬 so strange

DragonFlew · 20/08/2018 16:55

Just bought the comfiest jeans ever! From Next, I think they were £26.99 and they over bump jeggings. Amazing! So soft and stretchy.
Also bought a dress for a wedding on Saturday but it was huge, couldn't get it a size down so I've had to.return it and going to try and squeeze into non-maternity dress 😬

Alicejj8x · 20/08/2018 18:06

Got my down syndrome Edwards or Patau letter today

My results are
Downsyndrome : 1 in 3003
Edwards or Patau 1 in 44205

It says low risk result
But I am just wondering are these numbers good?

maxiflump1 · 20/08/2018 18:09

@Yakadee I think you have a good case for an elective c section this time. Maybe at your next mw appointment ask her straight out if you can be referred?

@Alicejj8x I think it's if it's 1:150 is when it's high risk. I'm sure it said that on my letter

AliceRR · 20/08/2018 18:16

@Alicejj8x I only got mine on Friday and don’t really understand how they calculate these figures. There seem to be huge differences. MW told me 1 in 125 or 1 in 150 is low.

My DS risk was 1 in 18,884 or something. If you got 1 in 200 it would be low. I think I’ve seen online people have got 1 in 50,000.

I have also read that it can be different on different days.

Can’t remember for the other but will check when I get home if u want to know.

I was googling all sorts when I got my letter but I think best to try not to get wrapped up in the figures. I’m just pleased I’m low risk 🙂

Surprisedmom · 20/08/2018 18:16

@Alicejj8x yup I definitely have a furrier tummy than normal and a couple of stray dark hairs. I really don’t like those ones though so have plucked them out.

First tummy touching happened today from my mum’s friend, though in fairness she was saying ‘next time I see you you’ll have a big belly’. Still made me realise how odd it is that people just randomly touch you now you’re pregnant.

Regarding birth plans I have to keep telling my mom i’m having this baby in hospital not at home. My mom was a total hippy, never looked at the scans, refused all tests and me and my three siblings were all home births. My mom says labour is easy (less than 8 hours and 4/5 pushes for us all) but I keep telling her that’s no guarantee i’ll be ok and I live a good hour from any hospital so I’m simply not taking the risk. Does anyone else have (well meaning) family/friends telling them what they ought to do?

I guess I ought to get used to it since people always give unsolicited advice regarding children, but I wish my mom would stop telling me to do things her way!

Yakadee · 20/08/2018 18:28

@maxiflump1 - I think I do. Bit of an overstate but I think if someone just examined me they'd know what I was talking about. I have my next appointment this coming Thursday so will ask.

@Surprisedmom - it's totally your choice. Try not feel pressured as ultimately it's you who will be going through it all. Xx

Since2016 · 20/08/2018 18:42

I just got my downs letter. They’ve changed it so it now just says low risk. In some ways that’s better I think - no numbers to worry over! I had the exact stats last time and remember getting myself into a total state comparing it to others!

Alicejj8x · 20/08/2018 18:45

@Since2016
Ah didn't you get numbers I got numbers then it says. Lower risk result

Alicejj8x · 20/08/2018 18:45

@Surprisedmom
I M
So
Glad it's not just me lol

Alicejj8x · 20/08/2018 18:46

@Baby160P

@AliceRR
Thank
You both

It says low risk on my letter so I am happy with that and no more
Testing needs doing so happy with that but the numbers just panic me lol and then google doesn't say too much about it.

Yes plz @AliceRR that would be good

Since2016 · 20/08/2018 18:48

No I got numbers last time for DD but they’ve obviously changed the way they do it!

Baby160P · 20/08/2018 18:57

Question

What foods are people avoiding?

I've been so Regimented avoiding everything involving aspartame... diet drinks etc , anything like ham, processed meats, mayonnaise, cheeses, too much fish etc.

My friends told me I'm going to the extreme but I just don't want to risk anything.

craftymum01 · 20/08/2018 19:02

I avoid raw meat, shell and raw fish, pate, and caffene. That's pretty much it to be honest, but I would never question anyone who cut out more. Some of my friends were eating as normal. It is each to their own and what you feel comfortable with.

I'll be honest I have really been craving cigarettes!! I haven't smoked in 6 years!

Baby160P · 20/08/2018 19:04

@craftymum01 that's good to know.

Not the cigarettes how funny after so long!

We had a family do and I wasn't sure on the buffet just Incase so had my other half investigate all Sandwich filling and hat the chicken nuggets were proper chicken etc

People did say things but I just like to know baby is ok 😬

lanalawr · 20/08/2018 19:04

@Baby160P It's each to their own - some will be more risk averse than others. NHS say that processed meats and cheeses are fine but to avoid soft mould ripened cheeses and things like Brie and Camembert unless piping hot. Mayo from a jar is made from pasteurised eggs so is fine, homemade is more variable but if they're lion stamped eggs used then they're considered safe. Some people avoid cured meats, others don't. Most fish are fine but it's recommended to limit to 2 portions per week (no swordfish or marlin though). Pate is a no-no because it has a higher risk of listeria and liver is a no-no because it has exceptionally high levels of vitamin A (not sure about other offal off the top of my head).

DragonFlew · 20/08/2018 19:05

I cut down on caffeine, decaf tea and no coke/pepsi. But haven't really cut anything else out. I'm eating fully cooked eggs and still eat fish and prawns.
Just trying to eat more fruit and veg to stay healthy for babe more than anything! Oh and loads of water!

Surprisedmom · 20/08/2018 19:06

@Baby160P i’ve also generally avoided aspartame, but not to the point of never having any fizzy drinks just only if out with friends and sick of fruit juice (so perhaps once or twice a week).

Otherwise, as a vegetarian it’s just cheese i’m having to be careful about (which makes me sad)

Surprisedmom · 20/08/2018 19:08

P.s. i’m sure most people knew about the listeria outbreak this summer in the uk so i’ve steered clear of the frozen vegetables/fruit aisle and avoided all supermarket salads/sandwhiches. I’ve also not eaten sweet corn since that’s where the outbreak started.

lanalawr · 20/08/2018 19:08

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/

I tend to follow this. Won't be having haggis on Burn's night again this year and will avoid all pate and raw/pink meat. I've eaten chorizo from the supermarket though. I'm drinking mainly decaf tea but have had the odd normal tea and instant coffee if I'm in work and have run out of tea bags. I choose to avoid all alcohol (including in cooking where I can) but I know people who are happy to cook with it or have the occasional glass. Definitely feel more relaxed about food the second time round though (and happy that lion stamped eggs are now ok to eat raw/runny).

DragonFlew · 20/08/2018 19:09

@Baby160P don't listen to anyone else. Do what you want. With my first I was so strict and didn't eat anything on the 'list' because I was worried.
I'm more relaxed about it now because I know it's extremely rare to become ill or cause harm to baby from foods. Someone posted the link to a good article/book about the myths and facts behind these 'rules'.

But as I say it's what you feel comfortable with, don't listen to other people!

Lookingforadvice123 · 20/08/2018 19:33

Re the Down's syndrome etc risks, I didn't get numbers last time, just "low risk" but this time I will get numbers apparently. Personally I'd rather not know as long as it's low risk, I just hope the odds are good! My scan was Tuesday and they said I would get a phone call by Friday if I was high risk so just waiting for my letter now.

Re the food, I'm having caffeine but well within the 200mg per day allowance so one cup of tea or instant coffee and then a glass, can or bottle of coke. I would never normally have coke every day but it's helping me right now! Baby160p what's the rules on aspartame, I didn't know there was a special pregnancy one? I know it's not great for you anyway!

I also haven't had a sniff of alcohol and barely did with DS, maybe half a glass of prosseco twice. This time I'll be more relaxed and will definitely have a glass on Xmas day etc but no more than one small glass at a time.

I avoid liver and the mould ripened cheeses like the plague but other than that I'm fairly relaxed this time round. lanalawr interesting that you've had supermarket chorizo, this is one thing I really miss. Is it less likely to make you ill if from the supermarket?
