Hello all and welcome to this month's thread!!
Let's all stop feeling sick and start expanding now

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Castanet · 05/06/2007 21:18

housemum, yep, the head-sand bit is well practiced here as well, however, better to be prepared for the higly likely (statistically) bad news than being shocked and terrified after your nuchal. CVS can be done from 12 weeks onwards and you get your results in 2 days. Don't want to wait another month and worry like mad and in worst case cenario, having to have a very late and traumatic termination.

Loucee · 05/06/2007 21:42

Hi ladies

Blimey, I was away for the weekend and am totally lost in this thread! Love reading your chat and have tried to catch up as best I can. We went to Arran and stayed at a spa, it was fantastic and had a lovely time. Was hard work at times with DD (16mths now) in a hotel room but was lovely all the same.

Skidaddle - yep, I am not joking when I say that taking a pic of my belly side on is the same size as when I had my 21 wks scan with DD, how work haven't guessed is beyond me as my clothes are so tight. I am 12wks + 1 and have 12 wk a wk on thurs so if all is well I'll tell them the following tues (when I'll be 14wks but work tues-thurs).

I've been eating all nuts except peanuts, MW didn't say not to when I asked her.

Beanstermummy - yes a good HV is so vital in those early days/wks, I just hate it when they give inaccurate advice which sometimes helps the new mother but later when they find out the facts they regret their decisions and realise HV was crap. (nt in all cases but just sometimes when new mums are unsure of what they want). Hopefully with so many of us on this thread we can all provide additional support to each other in those early days/weeks as well.

My hair is brittle and dry, anyone know any good treatments to help? Preferably buy over the counter ones!

BeachBunni · 06/06/2007 09:02

14 wks today . I'm so excited. Is anyone else realising how quickly the time seems to be flying by now.

Can't help with the hair situation Loucee as mine has turned into a big greaseball. When I used to dye my hair and it got really dry I used Kerastase stuff. It's great but you can only get it in those shops that sell all the hairdressers products.

Now it's still early but is anyone else counting down the weeks until you can go off on maternity?? I'm planning to take mine quite early as I manage a shop and commute and I'm literally on my feet all day from 6 in the morning to 7.30 at night. I get a sore back and legs at it is without having to carry any extra baby weight. I'm not planning to return anyway. If nothing else I'll be getting a transfer and cutting my hours. Roll on the next 4-5 months.

Nbg · 06/06/2007 09:20

Great to hear your scan was ok Fifi. Its a good feeling when you've been isnt it.

Loucee, I would try a leave in conditioner treatment for your hair.
Boots do a good range and alot you can buy in single satchets so you could try a few different brands and see which are better.
I have heard VO5 is quite good.

darty · 06/06/2007 09:30

Hi, I am reg mumsnetter with namechange as life very complicated at moment.

I am coming up to 12 weeks. I have other children and am due end december. Hello everyone.

Have a namesearch under Darty. This was posted the day I found out. Amazing.

Beanstermummy · 06/06/2007 10:00

Housemum and Castanet - at the ripe old age of nearly 36 I thought the results of Nuchal scan would be pretty high due to age alone - but combined with blood test they came in at 1 in 6737 which as they only class high risk and recommend a CVS or Amnio is 1 in 300 or less was pretty impressive and as they also factor in mothers weight it really wasn't boding well as I'm at least 3st overweight - just goes to show you really never can tell.
Our CUBS (nuchal plus bloods etc) was done at the Nuffield Hospital in Glasgow and was £200. In Forth Valley NHS they don't offer nuchal at all even if at risk!! don't know about CVS - the only info I have read from them so far says Amnio. As for other NHS trusts I have no idea - one thing you do pick up from MN is jsut how varied the care levels are for us all.

Caz10 - long time no hear - have you had yoiur Nuchal yet at Nuffield? let me know how things went

Loucee - Arran sounded lovely - we're off there at the end of this month for a long weekend - camping which should be fun with a just 2 yrs old loopy mad DD - add to nutty Godparents and friends, and DH doing an adventure race on the Sat over there and also a 30th birthday for one of the said nutters - should be fun all round

Ah well - best get back to work - well waiting around for collegues for site meeting but hey ho at least it's not raining for a change

Happy thoughts

Nbg · 06/06/2007 11:08

Hiya Darty.
Hope everything is ok for you

Nbg · 06/06/2007 11:13

OMG Darty

Neuro · 06/06/2007 11:17

Beachbum I CAN'T wait to go on maternity leave. I'm looking at it as a break from work but in order to do something really exciting and new (and tiring). I've got relatives all over the place, so will be quite gypsy like for a good chunk of maternity leave. I'm prob going to take the full 9 months off now that i can get maternity pay for it. It'll be quite nice going back to work in September as from schooldays, it always feels like the beginning of the year in a funny way.
I might go in for a weekly meeting once a week though just to know what's going on in the company to avoid shell shock when i return for real. Seems like ages away...
My tummy will not stop sticking out. I am wearing all black today and if you didn't know me, you'd probably just think 'she ates some pies!'.
I feel sick today though

Neuro · 06/06/2007 11:20

Darty what does this mean:
Have a namesearch under Darty. This was posted the day I found out. Amazing.????
Am i being thick?

mimicakey · 06/06/2007 12:28

Neuro, we can be thick together! The suspense is killing me Darty!

I am excited today! Just spoke to my friend who is due in August.

Ambi · 06/06/2007 13:12

I cannot WAIT for Mat Leave either....

Bumpbands are amazing, it was delivered yesterday and I haven't taken it off yet. Feels naughty sat here at work with my jeans undone but no-one can see.... Recommend to everyone

Thanks peanutbutter, i think i can talk my hubby into that scan, as it's only 10 mins from our house.

Housemum · 06/06/2007 13:34

Neuro/Mimicakey - go to "search for messages" and type Darty in where you can put the poster's name - you'll find a thread with a spookily accurate prediction!! Look at Darty's earliest post, then scroll up for the reply from "MakingDo"

BeachBunni · 06/06/2007 14:28

lol Neuro. Think I'll change my name to beachbum, it would actually suit me better

That is quite freaky darty. Wish I'd be able to get one done.

macdoodle · 06/06/2007 16:57

Just booked my private nuchal scan 2 weeks today I will be 12+3 I think - round here you get early dating scan then anomaly scan and triple bloods at 18 weeks (too late IMO)...at 36 I feel the need to know my risks (not that I think I would be able to terminate a downs baby not the end of the world is it) but I would like to know (and I suppose it could be worse than downs) and be prepared - quite nervous actaully and £200 yikes but worth it

Furrymummy · 06/06/2007 19:01

Hello, beckle - headaches not going been very bad today. Now I just feel very sleepy.
12 weeks tomorrow though!
Pecka - my next scan is on Tuesday as well - will be thinking of you.
Hello everyone else!

Loucee · 06/06/2007 19:07

Hi Darty - off to read your thread in a mo.

Thanks for the hair tips, bought some VO5 hot oils to try - will do some pampering tonight once DD is in bed.

Beanster - great results, must give you a nice piece of mind.

How does everyone feel about flying? I avoided it when pg with DD but we're godparents to my niece at the beginning of July and will need to fly down - it's only and hour and a bit but feel nervous.

Housemum · 06/06/2007 19:15

Flying is fine unless you have a reason to be high risk for thrombosis - I went on hols to Florida when pg with dd2, the only advice the midwife gave me was to make sure I drank plenty to avoid dehydration, move my feet around (she suggested trying a tennis ball to roll under each foot in turn) and to wear flight socks. She did say not to make 2 long-haul flights though, so I had to miss out on a free holiday in Dubai that DH won - he took a mate from work instead.

Short hop like yours should be no problem.

Caz10 · 06/06/2007 19:30

Hi all

Beanstermummy I decided against the nuchal scan - still not 100% it was the right decision! But £200 is so much, we are strapped for cash as it is. I am only early 30's too. (can you see I am trying to convince myself?!).
Also, I just don't think I would go for amnio or CVS, esp now as I have discovered I am rhesus negative blood type. So what would be the point really?
(still trying to convince herself...)
I have worked with children with DS and to be honest I think there are many other "conditions" which would be far harder to deal with. Have worked with kids with cerebal palsy too and I think I would struggle with that.

On a lighter note, who has been buying all the TopShop bump bands?! My 2 nearest stores don't do maternity so went online - they're sold out in black!!!

macdoodle · 06/06/2007 21:21

Caz the risks if you are under 35 are low anyway - I would not have one if I was a year younger but I will be nearly 37 when babe is born didn't have one with first was 30 - so FWIW I think you have made right decision - am not sure whether I would have amnio/CVS if it showed high risk not thought that far in advance as risks of miscarriage so high (?about 1/100 for amnio compared to say a risk of 1/300 on a positive nuchal aghhh mind freeze!)

BeachBunni · 06/06/2007 21:57

Flying is fine Loucee. I flew a few weeks ago to Spain, just made sure I was really hydrated. Moved around a lot etc. I'm also flying over again in August. I'm usually a very nervous flyer (tears at the airport) but for some reason this time I was more relaxed.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 06/06/2007 21:59

I have just booked flights to spain in August!

Thought it would be lovely for the kids to have some family time before a baby arrives on the scene

becklespeckledfrog · 07/06/2007 10:09

Hello all! 11 weeks today and can't believe I've made it this far! Scan tomorrow and feeling very nervous. Feel very washed out today though, my MS is awful in the evenings and seems to be getting worse. Last night I finished work, went to get my bag, got a whiff from the canteen and threw up - I never throw up! Does anyone else have MS that's getting worse? I hope it doesn't stick around all pg, due to my current crappy diet I have definitely lost weight. My trousers are usually tight on the thighs and hips but loose on the waist and they are now tight on the waist and loose on the thighs and hips. Really hope the nausea clears soon so I can eat real food again!

cazzybabs · 07/06/2007 13:36

My matnerity clothes arrived yesterday. I have no bump bands though! Baby is sighing with relief as it is less squashed. also dd1 has started to tell lots of people and so it is out at work now (she goes to the school I work it) and the nursery dd2 goes to and some of the parents of the children I teach know!

skidaddle · 07/06/2007 13:51

Becklespeckle - yes my ms is getting worse too - I only get it in the evenings now but I feel terrible and I am 13+2! Can't bear the thought of this going on much longer and more to the point when will I ever be able to have sex again (too sick in the evenings and dd there in the day)?!!
