Gorgeous scan photos!

Gemsie1984 · 07/06/2018 05:07

So I stripped on the scales this morning (early yes but suffering from insomnia 😩😴).
I've mentioned earlier that I lost a bit of weight so far in this pregnancy because of pretty bad MS. My MS has eased a lot comparatively, although still get the odd bad day when I struggle to eat much. Generally I'm eating a lot more anyway. I've now lost 23lbs. I'm a bit concerned now, or should I be? I'm still by no means slim, I am plus size but my concern with the continued weight-loss is that baby is not getting what it needs. CRL at 12 week scan was bang in the middle but does that mean much at this early stage? I'm mainly eating what I fancy: raw vegetables, fruit, rice noodles in broth, chilli peppers.. gone off meat for the most part although I try and have chicken just for the protein. I don't think I'm eating more than 1,000kca/day. This isn't intentional though really, just not fancying food yet particularly and what I am is low calorie. I know it's not ideal. Is it safe to continue to lose weight in pregnancy? If so, I would continue as I am although I obviously don't want to risk anything. I feel okay physically.. apart from MS occasionally. I don't have dizziness or weakness although I am very tired, but chalk that down to pregnancy.

😂 STEPPED on the scales.. not stripped!! Predictive text!

Cakelaur · 07/06/2018 07:51

@Gemsie1984 I've lost a couple of kgs so far. Don't worry too much is what my dr said. You can try drinking protein shakes. PhD woman (the natural organic one) is good for pregnant women. But you can sip that to give you extra protein. I personally couldn't stomach it but that was a suggestion by my chiropractor.

GoldilocksTheGraceless · 07/06/2018 08:28

Hi @Gemsie1984 I really feel for you. I've lost 15lbs due to MS and it makes me feel uneasy too. My bmi is 27 so I know I have weight to lose. Two things to bear in mind: 1 is that all our vitamins nutrients and calories go to little bean first. This is apparently just a fact and is something I'm holding onto dearly! That means that even women who sadly don't have access to sufficient calories and lose weight when they are already underweight can and do have healthy babies. The second thing is regarding your protein, don't worry too much about trying to force meat, in fact things like chickpeas (hummus to go with your raw veggies?) or beans have more protein than meat so there are other options.
I totally agree that it doesn't feel the most natural thing to be happening but it sounds like your dr is content and the scan showed a really healthy baby so I'd try not to worry. Just wait - our appetites might come back with a vengeance very soon!!!
Hope this helps xx

SteveHolt · 07/06/2018 08:49

Just an update on the water-before-scan thing, I actually had to empty my bladder completely after they first tried to do the scan, so they had a better view and more room to try to move the baby around (it was being very lazy), so you don't necessarily need to have any at all! Although it turned out I was 14 weeks so maybe that makes a difference!

Anyone have a slightly high nuchal fold measurement? Ours is at the very top of the normal range, so waiting on the results of the blood test...

MagicalCreatures · 07/06/2018 08:52

@Gemsie1984 like pp have said, I wouldn’t worry too much. If you are plus size, then reducing your calories to 1000 roughly a day (which isnt far off what a diet would probably be) would make you lose that sort of weight.
That’s totally normal and would be what a fitness instructor would advise you to do if you went to a gym. A woman’s calorie intake should only be 2000 a day anyway.
You are still eating a great selection of foods (raw vegetables are the best) and all the goodness from that Is going to go straight to baby first.
Are you taking pregnancy vitamins as well.

Gemsie1984 · 07/06/2018 11:12

Yeah I'm taking pregnacare although it makes me gag! As long as baby is fine then that's okay. I know the health benefits of losing weight, but it's quite a lot in a short amount of time. I am keen to carry on, although would prefer it to come off a bit more slowly. My DP is asking me daily what I've eaten and tries to force me to eat almost and it's making me paranoid. I know they mean well but when you can't face food it just compounds the nausea. Thanks for the advice ladies 🙂

MissMedusa · 07/06/2018 11:24

@Gemsie1984 I'm the same as you and have become a pregnancy vegetarian. I just can't stomach any meat or eggs, even cheese (my favourite thing in the world) is difficult. I've lost 12lb and I'm overweight too so in general it's a good thing but I also worry about the baby but think of all those women with HG throughout their pregnancy with out extra weight to spare who still have healthy babies. The baby takes what it needs from you first so the only thing that may suffer is your own health and nutrition and your body can handle a few months of nutritional deprivation (at least that's something we can thank our extra padding for). You might even be avoiding problems in later pregnancy (like GD and pre-eclampsia) by getting a bit of weight off now. It's not ideal, i know, I'm 14+2 today and am just the last couple of days seeing a light at the end of the nausea tunnel

Paranormalbouquet · 07/06/2018 11:31

@Gemsie1984 I don’t think the weight loss is a problem at this point, after 20 weeks it might be. You could ask your midwife to refer you to a dietician? To help you come up with a personalised plan. I’m afraid I gained 3kg in first trimester with eating through my nausea but have had a very small appetite since surgery (coming back now). My plan was essentially to aim to maintain my weight from now on, and hopefully therefore be slimmer by the end.

I’m terrified about scan tomorrow. Also not sure what they’ll be able to see- I have a thick dressing on my wound and an extremely gassy bloated stomach (look around 7 months pregnant right now!).

MagicalCreatures · 07/06/2018 13:09

@Gemsie1984 I agree. You can’t force stuff down your throat because that will just have an adverse effect and your more likely to bring it back up again. I think you’ll be fine and it does sound like a lot over a short period of time but then if your overweight, you’ve got more to lose so it does come off quicker, like with any diet. My sister is much heavier then me and when we both diet and cut our calories the same, she loses double what I lose in a week.

On another note - I know we all experience watery discharge during pregnancy and I know it’s totally normal. But for others of you, does it seem almost like a small patch of water on your underwear with know colour.
I’ve just rung midwives at the hospital to check im not leaking small amounts of amniotic fluid as it’s been happening over a period of a few weeks and she says it’s very unlikely so it has put my mind at rest slightly but are any of you the same x

Yes I am similar. Had it all through my last pregnancy too, just seemed to have soggy knickers the whole time shrug

Gemsie1984 · 07/06/2018 17:20

My discharge is like white-clear snot mostly. Sorry TMI. I sometimes feel it leaking out 🤮 sometimes makes my knickers feel wet if I'm not wearing a panty-liner.

Gemsie1984 · 07/06/2018 17:41

What have people bought so far?
I've bought a couple of newborn sets of clothes, baby bath, few blankets, bottle set with steriliser (I'm planning on breastfeeding but will express also), a crib, crib sheet set and some beanie babies (a little monkey and an elephant) oh and a lullaby teddy that plays music from his belly.. that's probably it for now, will go again after 21 week scan. My plan is to have everything by 6 months, bar the pram. The pram will be the last thing and most costly so will have to save a bit, especially as the one I've fallen in love with is £££ 😩🤑 I should be sensible and buy second hand like I said I was going to, but logic flies out the window sometimes..

charlybs · 07/06/2018 18:01

We are reusing almost everything from first time so hope it will be fairly cheap.

I bought a second hand double pram yesterday.. first hand was over 1k which is just absurd! Expensive travel systems just aren't worth it, especially when after 6 months you'll want a light buggy you can fold and go with.

I will buy a special little sleep suit after the 12 week scan, all being well. Booked in now for 26 June. If this one is a girl (e.g. opposite to my son) I might get a few cutesy things after the 20wk scan.

Might also get the new version of Ewan the sheep - I heard he now has a washable cover and a motion sensor! haha the things we get excited about these days.

Ameliaclem · 07/06/2018 19:05

@charlybs thank you the recommendation I’m coming home from work and going to bed for an hour or two every day I’m just absolutely exhausted and struggling! I’m 13 weeks now so I’ll do some research for yoga classes in my area - I might need to go shopping for a costume though as my bump is getting bigger by the day!

Congratulations on your news too!

marthvader · 07/06/2018 19:08

I still haven't had my scan letter through. I'm 12 weeks next Tuesday! I called them and they said scan would be between 12-14 weeks and they're just really busy but I just want to know a date! My OH works away a lot so would be handy to know a date to plan around! I've given in and booked a private scan for Sunday as I can't stand the waiting. A girl from my work announced her pregnancy yesterday and she is due 4 days before me - I wanted to tell her about me too but managed to resist but can't wait to share with her!

charlybs · 07/06/2018 19:19

@Ameliaclem Yes the exhaustion is ridiculous isn't it! It should in theory start wearing off soon and we will all feel like beautiful blossoming glowing things. apparently!

@marthvader don't blame you organising a private scan that's leaving it a bit late!

MrsTeaPlease · 07/06/2018 19:59

@magicalcreatures yes this is exactly the same for me! Wet knicker patch and nothing else, glad someone else has the same!

MagicalCreatures · 07/06/2018 22:21

It’s awful isn’t. Glad it’s not just me too. Constantly knicker checking coz feel wet all the time. And I feel like I should be changing my underwear 3 times a day. X

It's driving me mad! Makes me feel dirty 🙀 changing my undies every half hour 😖🤫

Gemsie1984 · 07/06/2018 22:48

Panty liners is the way forward!

GoldilocksTheGraceless · 08/06/2018 10:05

Morning all :) just discovered that hula hoops stop nausea in its tracks. If anyone else is still struggling give them a go!!! I had to run in to a Tony & Guy to sit down and have some water. They gave me a bunch of biscuits 😇 and were so lovely so that was a huge relief and then I managed to get my hands on some hula hoops which have really saved me! Taking the train from London to Manchester this afternoon will be interesting... particularly as I'm going for a 'boozy weekend' for my friends birthday so I may be napping through most of it!!
Hope you all have a great day and a great weekend! 💛
