I hope this works! Here is a new thread as the old one was getting v long.
I hope everyone is doing ok. If I'm anything to go by you will be wandering around queasy and exhausted - isn't this fun?!

Chickenpox and pregnancy

Hope that helps!

Housemum · 15/05/2007 09:18

Oops - this is the bit I meant - if you have already had it you should be ok, only be careful if you never had it as a child - didn't mean to panic you with the other link, that's if you actually have chickenpox.

chickenpox and pregnancy

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 09:28

You did really scare me!!
Its ok i've read the proper one. I really want dd to get it before nb comes along so hopefully we can get it out the way.
I definatly had it when i was little so hopefully def immune. I will let mw know though.

BeachBunni · 15/05/2007 09:46

Not wanting to scare you bambino but def let the mw know because I've had chickenpox twice. I only got a few spots the first time that obviously didn't build up my immunity and the second time I ended up in hospital.

birdseed · 15/05/2007 10:05

bambino1, if you have definitely had chicken pox as a child then you shouldn't be at risk and so not a problem

If in any doubt then you can have a blood test to check that you are immune. If you are not immune and you have been in contact with it then you can get given antibodies against it (via a drip), which don't prevent you getting it but make it much more mild.

Worth mentioning it to midwife anyway.

You do hear occasional stories about people getting it twice, but if you have a normal immune system and not on steroids then this should not be possible as you should already be immune. What might have happened in these cases is misdiagnosis the first time round.

You can get shingles, which is reactivation of your own virus which hides in your nerve roots waiting until your immune system is a bit low. commoner in old people. Not a risk to fetus as far as I understand.

birdseed · 15/05/2007 10:08

ambi - they come in black and white, so could photocopy them at local library rather than paying loads and loads.

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 10:08

Thanks guys. I will give midwife a ring.
Dd is driving me mad today! I made the mistake of telling her she was having her hair cut today at 1pm. She loves having it done so every five mins she is asking to go. I keep saying after lunch so now she keeps asking to have her lunch. AHHHHH!

MamaMaiasaura · 15/05/2007 10:13

lol bambino - your dd sounds very swithced on

BeachBunni · 15/05/2007 10:21

What's the deal with steroids and chickenpox birdseed? I was on three different steroid creams for a bad skin condition when I was a baby so maybe that was it. I've never heard of that before.

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 10:36

Switched on is an understatemnet! She knows everything and also remembers everything! She still goes on about things that happened in Lanzarote last year before she was even two!
Makes me laugh everyday with what she comes out with!

MamaMaiasaura · 15/05/2007 10:54

she sounds lovely. I am starting to panic a bit. GOt to leave for scan soon and although got really good strong preg symptoms and not have had anytrhing to cause concern just really worried. DP coming with me, will be first scan he has ever been too. Am only about 7 weeks.

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 11:08

Enjoy it awen! You may not be able to see much of a baby shape at seven weeks though! I think most preg women are worried before the first scan I certainly know I will be when my 12 week one comes along. Its just natural.
Let us know how it goes.

BeachBunni · 15/05/2007 11:12

Good luck with the scan awen, you'll be fine. I know I'm on hot coals for mine - 9 days to go. Let us know how you get on.

Niks · 15/05/2007 11:19

Does anyone else have to pay for their 12 week scan? I found out that my first scan at the hospital of my choice is at 20 weeks and that if we want the nuchal scan we have to pay!! I wasn't going to go for it as I am still fairly young and to be honest wouldn't want to have the stress of a high probability hanging over my pregnancy but dp read all the info i emailed him and said he's feel better if we did have one. I just think it's a bit much asking for a ton to rule out the possibility of downs...
Also - man I want to eat!! I have managed to get to 8 weeks feeling smugly untired and unsick and now I want chips ALL THE TIME. I never eat chips - I've got some in the oven now! And I feel like death warmed up and look it too. I'm sure I never felt this crap with dd - mind you I was 22... maybe I was still full of the joys of youth and now I'm an old git I am more senstive to the joys of pregnancy! Urggh
How is everyone else?

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 11:26

I don't have to pay for 12 week scan. I've never even heard of that! We donate some money to have scan pictures to take away.

I'm on/off eating at the mo. Last night I managed 3/4 of a whole pizza and was still hungry (dh had a 1/4) but today I hardly managed to eat half a bowl of cereal. Although I have this big craving for cheesy tuna pasta so going to make that for dd and my lunch in a min!

I look and feel terrible all the time too! Just think its one of those first 12 week things! Well i hope so!

Niks · 15/05/2007 11:38

I was on/off food for a couple of weeks but now it seems to be go go go!! I'm liking the sound of cheesy tuna - thinking cheesy tuna chips... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I had never heard of having to pay for the 12 weeks scan either but I am quite glad dp has gone for it as I don't think I could sit here listening to all your scan stories knowing I had another 13 weeks to go!
I called my friend this morning to moan at her about feeling so rough (which of course she found hilarious as I had been boasting about feeling fine up to this point)and she reminded me that it's only a matter of weeks now until we're all running around feeling fabulous, weeding the garden and generally glowing with health. Hard to imagine that now though as it's such an effort to haul my ass off the sofa in order to put the chips in the oven...

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 11:46

Lol Niks. I am exactly the same. I've been sitting at the comp for mist morning and house still hasn't cleaned itself so guess i'm going to have eo do it!!
Think i'm really starting to annoy DH with state of place and he just keeps saying, your pregnant, not dying! Charming hey!
Oh well better get dd lunch on for her and I also really need a wee! Again! I will pop back later to see how todays scans have gone!

dundeemarmalade · 15/05/2007 12:11

cheesy tuna pasta sounds good.
made dh drive to shops last night for loaf of sliced white and some wafer thin ham - wierd given usual high level of food-snobbery chez marmalade.
housekeeping here consists of waiting til dust has formed thick carpet on all surfaces which can then be simply rolled up and chucked away...
frankly it's an effort just to sit upright at the moment.

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 12:17

It is tasting really good!

Beanstermummy · 15/05/2007 12:17

Hi Guys

Niks - in a number of Scottish NHS trusts you only get one scan - I think Edinburgh and South Lanarkshire only offer a dating scan then nothing after that - not sure which is better- early one or later. I'm under Forth Valley (Stirling area) and we do get both but are having to pay for nuchal scan as they don't offer that -see thread on Nuchal scans (no idea how to link to this!!). I know the Nuffield in Glasgow offer early scans etc for £75 and the Nuchal is costing £200 (combined with the blood tests). Where abouts in the UK are you? I think scans are only an issue up here in the wilds of jockland thou.

MacDoodle - don't worry - we all have our major off days - I find locking myself in the car on my own of very long shower works a treat in cutting off from reality! I cheered myself up yesterday by looking back over all the piccies we have of baby Bean - how quickly does time fly!

MW yesterday predictably uneventful - shared care between them and the Docs but she didn't even do BP, weight (thank God) , height etc - let alone as how I was doing, offer to listen for heartbeat etc - scan should be next week though so happy with that.

All in, things ok really. Happy thoughts to you all - any news from Pecka???? thoughts are with you hon

Niks · 15/05/2007 12:41

Loving the housework tip Dundee!! The food snobbery in this house runs fairly high too - especially with me (dp will eat anything if it stays still long enough) but have just thoroughly enjoyed a chip butty with a chunk of white bloomer and lashings of butter, ketchup and mayo!!
Beanster (hi!) I live near Luton so my hospital is Luton Dunstable. To tell the truth I haven't investigated too earnestly as I haven't even had my intro letter from them yet - this is on the hearsay of my gp so maybe I should look into it a little more closely.
Will try to find nuchal scan thread...

peanutbutter · 15/05/2007 13:49

Nbg - how are you feeling? I've also heard that migraines are common in pregnancy

awen - good luck with the scan you lucky thing!

We're looking to get away for a few days next week and I'm on the brink of booking a Haven at Filey in Yorkshire - has anyone been there? We went to Haggerston Castle near Berwick last year when ds was 8 months (he's 20m now) and it was better than we'd expected so we're thinking of doing it again but at this one near Scarbrough.

Had to collect ds early from nursery yesterday when they rang to say he had a mild rash all over his body and a toddler in the same room had just been taken to GP and her Mum told she had German Measles. Ds has had his MMR (and I've had the Rubella immunisation at school) but the problem is that my own GP practice didn't want to see him unless he was actually poorly with it (which he isn't) but nursery are saying he can't come back until he's had a diagnosis from a doctor. I reckon the rash will probably clear up in a day or two in which case I won't bother with the Docs. If the rash doesn't go I could still get him in to see the GP on Friday perhaps.

Hmmmmmm - just thinking "aloud" here really. Anyway, it'll be 2 weeks tomorrow til he's even back at nursery so the rash is bound to have gone by then anyway isn't it??

CazzaH · 15/05/2007 13:57

Hello,

I had my first appointment with my GP yesterday. When i told her i was pregnant she said, 'oh, i see'. She worked out my due date then asked me to pick a hospital. I had no idea (having not lived in London very long) and asked her to recommend one, which she did - saying she'd 'heard it was ok'. She then took my blood pressure and a urine sample - not telling me what the latter was for. She told me i'd get a pack from the hospital, that i should make another appointment with her in 6 weeks and to get the midwives contact details and phone her. As i was leaving i mentioned that i was finding it all a bit overwhelming - it being my first child and unplanned. She said 'uh huh' and called the next patient.
I went home and cried. I was expecting her to at least ask how i was feeling! She didn't tell me what was going to happen in terms of scans, contact with the hospital, ante-natal classes etc etc. She didn't ask me about any unexpected pains or nausea or my moods.
I feel let down by my doctor. But then, i also wonder whether i am over-reacting and being melodramatic. I know i should have asked more questions but she was just so business like and uninterested.
Can anyone let me know their thoughts?
Thx,
C

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 14:05

peanut butter - German measles is extremly dangerous to preg women/ unborn baby. Don't want to scare you but ring your midwife and make her aware of situation.

bambino1 · 15/05/2007 14:11

Oh CazzaH if it makes you feel any better when I went she looked me up and down and said so are you happy about this? I reploed yes very and this will be my 2nd and she went oh i see and from then on assumed i knew everthing, gave the midwife number and basicallly shuved me out door!

How are you feeling anyway? When are you due?

You get so much support on here and any questions just ask!
