FloriaTosca · 01/06/2007 16:38

Hi Honey. I certainly hope you are right...I dont "think" I'll lack the perseverance, but I have a few friends who had problems (1 didnt produce enough for a hungry baby the other developed mastitis)and my mum developed abcesses after 8 weeks of feeding my brother (she was poisoning him for a week before she went to the doctor !).
I've been told that getting them "out" and exposed to the air helps prepare them for the onslaught..which wont displease the DH But I certainly want to bf (I've not been bullied into it by the mw) Thanks for the encouragement

karlou · 01/06/2007 16:54

Hi all! Have to agree with honeyapple about breast pumps. I was given an Avent manual one with dd1 but didn't get on with it at all, I would sit for ages pumping away and only produce a piddling amount - only for her to wake up and want another feed! I never bothered with dd2.
As for bf - it didn't come that easily first time round. Both dd1 and myself were newbies and it took a while to get established. When I was still in hospital one of the midwives gave her a little formula feed with a syringe just so she wasn't so hungry and would actually settle for a feed instead of rooting around angrily! The mw totally understood why I didn't want her to have a bottle. Within 6 weeks though we had got ourselves into a (sort of) routine though and I ended up feeding her until she was 3 years old, as I was advised to by a genetic counsellor due to my family history of breast cancer. It was much easier second time round, dd2 fed straightaway and again I fed her till she was 3.
As others have said it is so rewarding - I loved those cuddly moments - both don't beat yourself up if it doesn't happen easily at first or turns out not to be right for you.

honeyapple · 01/06/2007 16:55

Sorry- I know some women do have difficulties that lead them to stop BF... but on the hole, I feel that you just need to keep going! Like a cow, the more you are sucked at, the more milk you produce... and if you stop or start to give formula, then your milk supply will start to stop too. For the first week or so with my DS it was pretty blooming painful on the old nips... but fortunatly this didnt last for long and they soon toughened up! Never had any probs with BF my DD... hope this one is the same.
I would far prefer to suffer for a little bit than have to deal with bottles and sterilisers for months. I am way too lazy for that! (And it's also expensive)

honeyapple · 01/06/2007 16:56

On the whole!! Whoops... what hole was I referring to then??

Just thought I'd say that I bought both my breast pumps used on ebay - were really good price and great condition. If you are going to sterilise anyway, doesn't really make any difference. I have to say though, my steriliser was my worst buy - has been used twice and that was to sterilise the two pumps when I bought them! I just washed thoroughly and figured didn't need to be too clean - didn't sterilise my boobs!

Anyway, I got a manual Avent pump which I found really good. When I returned to work full time, I bought a Medula mini electric pump to avoid getting RSI if I kept using the manual one! Although electric is noisy, I found it quite efficient. My DS was able to still have exclusive breastmilk while I worked - he's 1 and has never had any formula! Not very glamorous being attached to the pumps but no-one has to see it!

As for nappies - can't remember who asked but I have a Little Lamb which is really good. Dries fairly quickly (although not as quick as terries) and has a great fit! They do quite a good trial set on their site which I think is about £10. Worth trying.

Can't remember what else has been said - memory is shocking! Hope everyone is well and enjoy the weekend!

j20baby · 01/06/2007 20:35

gosh, you've all moved fast, thought i should get my 2 pence worth in!

i bought an electric pump when dd(7) was born and it was awful, the mw recommended that i got a manual one, which i did, it was loads better, i've still got it now and my friend got one off ebay, but then decided she didn't want it so i bought it off her for £5, i figured i'll just sit there doing both at a time

i've bought a few reusable nappies, way too many apparantly, but never used them before so no idea what they're like!

have you all joined up to the boots parenting club? i've received 2 of the vouchers for the changing bag, and my friend got one too, so i've got 3 changing bags, but apparantly they're not very hardwearing, so i'll just use them till they're no good then move on to the next one anyway, what i was going to say is, i got another voucher for the bag sent through the post, so if any of you want it, let me know and its yours

hope the scans went ok today, and the porker title sounds good to me

Hi, scan went well today although it took 2 attempts as the baby had gone head down and laid on its front so they couldn't get all the measurements! Managed in the end and also found out I am having

another boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help, had trouble getting previous 2 boys names.

Shouldn't really say this but a bit down as really hoped for a girl this time as last baby. I'm sure I will be pleased when he is born but feel guilty that I feel this way.

congrats jersey! your well on your way to having your own football team!! just think, no periods or biker boyfriends to deal with when your dc are older

seriously though, i'm sure its only natural to feel like that, and it'll pass

and if you really want, we can swap for a few days, as i'm only going to have girls

and i've got loads of boy's names to help you out!

are you a traditionalist or do you like ones a bit different?

OP posts:
greedygreedyguzzler · 01/06/2007 22:37

jersy - i know how you feel. i was a bit disappointed finding out we are having another girl although i do have one of each at the moment. not sure why i was disappointed really i just was, but it only took about 48 hours to get my head round and now i am really excited. i do think it is really worth finding out the sex beforehand if you know you might be disappointed one way or the other cos then you have ages to get used to the idea, rather then being upset when the baby is born.

just think how much fun they will all have together.........i am worried about my ds now cos he might get left out being the only boy. at least you dot have that worry!

greedygreedyguzzler · 01/06/2007 22:38

what do you all think of the name Raya by the way? for a girl, obviously!

hi everyone!

you lot have been very chatty!!took me ages to read through!!!

got serious baby brain so cant remember everything thats been posted and am very tired so cant be bothered going backwards and forwards all the time!!

ft,sorry to ehar about everything youve een through, lets hope that the second of the year is a better one for you xx

j20,thanks for the tip about boots,im already registered with them with dd,but wonder if i can register again with this one?like having freebies!!

breast pumps,i had an avent manual one with dd,and like soemone else said that they only got a little bit out after pumping away for ages,i was the same.i used to get hand ache so dh would take over doing the pumping!!after about 3/4 hour id only have a couple of ounces.i like the idea of teh electric one,but the price i couldnt believe!!!im going to bf this time (although as i only stopped bf dd in end dec/beginning jan i did think it would be nice to have my boobs to myself for a bit,but then id feel guilty for not bf this one!!)dd was 2.5 years when i stopped.her peadiatrician told me bf for as long as poss,id only intended to do it for a year, but dd got too attatched so i just carried on.this one however im determined that i will stop at around a year old.dd wouldnt have a bottle or beaker or cup so taht was another reason why i carried on.

ive bought quite a few bits off ebay, moses basket and stand (for downstairs),rocking crib (for upstairs),snowsuit doodah for bringing baby home in,baby monitors,bedding,erm...and probably alot more than i can remember atm!!

ive got just about everything for the baby now, apart from the pram.so i can soon start getting things for our new house and save for the things that are too big to get jsut yet!

nappies, well i was going to get some reusable ones, but im worried incase this baby has cf aswell, reusables would definately be out of the question then!!dd is still in nappies, and has the runs alot, and usually ahs about 5-7 poos a day.so reusable ones were out of teh question with her.my mum is old school "you should put them in terrys",but teh thought of washing them when dd had had the runs just put me off!!

dd is sat waiting for the postman to arrive today, ive bought her a pair of lelli kelly shoes off ebay!!shes been going mad about wanting a pair for ages (and shes not even 3 yet...imagine what she'll be like when shes a teenager!!)i was gobsmacked at the price of them though, some are around £35,and they are only like sandshoes!!!i found some that are like a clarks shoe, and they were £27.i can see why people sell them on when there lo's have grown out of them at that price!!(ive bought brand new though,my cousin bought a pair of shoes off ebay and ended up with 6 varrucaes!!shed never had one before in her life and got them after wearing the ebay ones!!yuk!!!)

anyway, glad to hear the scans went ok yesterday, good luck for those next week.im seeing mw on monday and have my scan on thursday!!i cant wait!!!

MrsFish · 02/06/2007 16:37

Hi all, I'm home

Hi everyone, I'm back from holidays and haven't had chance to skim the thread yet but wanted to say Hello!
Inzidoodle, don't know of your history (will probablylearn of it when skimming) but just wanted to say that I hope all goes well at the hospital. I very much hope that your midwife is just being cautious. Will br thinking of you. x

HonorMatopoeia · 03/06/2007 12:07

Ok,read through now (and Inzi i now know you're nezi of old - makes much more sense now!) Still thinking of you, will watch thread for news. Big hugs.

EJT - sorry to hear you've had that scare - I live in fear of that happening again (after my early bleeds). Hopefully you're taking it very carefully and please don't worry about being signed off again if you need to.

I've read all the info on bf pumps and napppies with great interest. I failed miserably at bfing with Dd and would very much like to do it with this lo.

I have my scan and a consultants appointment tomorrow so I'm literally spending a day at the hospital. Had another 'funny turn' whilst away on holiday but was able to control this one by disappearing outside and sitting in a doorway - felt a right prat, people must have thought I was as drunk as a skunk!

Glad both you and lo are ok inzi. I had the protein thing with a sample of mine a week or two ago. There was a trace one day and gone the next. Apparently if a bit of discharge gets into the sample it can effect things. If it was gone though then that is the main thing. They may not have specifically said to rest up but I know I did after my hospital jaunt. If nothing else I needed the rest and I'm sure you do too. Can you call in sick? 6 hours in hospital today is more than a good enough reason imo. Take care of yourself hon, hopefully there will be no more pains from here on in. x

jersey · 03/06/2007 19:22

Thanks everyone, getting over the disappointment now. Thinking of Luke, Thomas or Daniel as a first name. Has to go with Michael for a middle name as DS1 has middle name after DH, DS2 after FIL so DS3 will be after my dad. At moment think Luke Michael is in the lead!

Raya sounds loverly never heard it before!

Inzidoodle glad everything ok, had a few incidents with DS1 and DS2 when had to go in to hospital but usually once you get in everything behaves itself. Reasuring but you do feel silly at the time .

DS2 is recovering from chicken pox but DS1 has it now so another week without sleep! How come when preg 1st time I thought it was hard work! That was a doddle .

Hope everyone ok and scans are going ok.

Thanks for the offer J2OBaby, my SIL has also offered to swap one day a week (only joking) as she has girls only. Am I right in thinking you are in Hull? I was born at North Ferriby and my grandparents lived on Hull.

alicet · 03/06/2007 22:09

Hi all!

Back from my week away - rubbish weather in france (boo!) but allthe eager babysitters more than made up for it so dh and i had a lovely relaxing time and ds got spoilt rotten. Sure I will be in for some fun times this week!

have just skim read this thread so can't remember who said what.... Sorry to those who have had scares (ejt and inzi?) and stressful times otherwise with bereavements and sh*tty exes. BIG hugs to you all.

Breast pumps.... I had an avent isis uno electric / battery powered one - it was fab and pretty quiet too - certainly not offputting. Not cheap at £85 but would highly recommend. Lots of mates who initially bought manual ones went on to buy electric ones in the end...

Can vouch for bf being bloody hard! ds had a tongue tie which I only found out after several weeks can make it very painful to bf. I was on the verge of giving up as it was so painful (my nipples were cracked and scabbed and AGONY) and only continued because I discovered nipple shields. If this baby is also tongue tied I will be DEMANDING they sort it out quickly - it is v ery easy to deal with when they are tiny. A great book I found was 'what to expect when you're breast feeding and what if you can't' by claire byams-cook (can get on amazon). great no nonsense advice and doesn't make you feel like a failure if you have problems. A definite must have I would say!

I had both a steam steriliser and a microwave one. Have to say that the mwave one was definately much better - much much quicker and easy to travel with too (both sets of parents live at the opposite end of the country to me). Got an avent one second hand off ebay for about a fiver. I am very happy with getting second hand stuff that I can clean. Would be reluctant to get soft toys once I've seen how much ds eats them and wouldn't get a second hand car seat but have bought a lot of other things on ebay. Just be aware of how much things cost new and search for deals on the web first. Some things like tiny love toys aren't that much cheaper and if its only a couple of quid saved I would prefer to buy new and sell them on after I've finished with them!

Welcome nellie!

Great news on scans that sound as though they have all been good. Sorry you didn't get the dd you were hoping for jersey - I don't think there's anything wrong with hoping for one over the other. Sure you will get over your disappointment before he arrives and love your new son every bit as much as the others! I thought I would be disappointed to have another boy but actually think it will be so so much nicer for my ds that I am now really happy about it.

Think that will do me for now - sorry for anyone I've missed out - been htinking of you all!
