oh and by the way,who watched bb last night and what do you think about there being no men??!!

i think itsjust going to be a summer of bitchyness, screaming and pmt!!!!cant believe there is only goingt o be 1 man put in on friday.its ok for the men watching, all teh skinny minnies are bound to be in bikinis all summer..but what about us girls that want to see some hunky muscley men tanning tehmselves in the garden??!!

Mumpbump · 31/05/2007 09:20

Morning all!!!!!! Well, bubba is fine - has everything it should have, nothing it shouldn't have and everything in the right place! So relieved... Only downside is that it is presently in a breech position - I thought it was lying differently - but it has ages to move and I have to scrub our kitchen floor anyway, so will save that for the last few weeks...

Pleased to hear that all is well with you, EJT!

Good luck to Tallis and Jersey for tomorrow!

FloriaTosca · 31/05/2007 10:03

Wonderful news Mump!

We havent watched bb since the first episode of the first one..so I dont think we'll be watching this one either...there's enough bi*yness going on in our circle of family and friends without watching more but I must admit that not watching puts you at a disadvantage in the after dinner conversation stakes for the next 3 months!!!

Right I'd better get off and do some work and stop myself moping ; I'm having one of my melancholy days...(I lost my Dad in March) and though I keep blaming the hormones, I suppose days of wanting to do nothing but sit and cry are really all part of the grieving process, but it can't be good for the LO so I'm going to blitz the kitchen and get myself into a better frame of mind before I have to start work at 2pm.

Hope everyone has lovely Thursday

ejt1764 · 31/05/2007 10:06

buffy - inappropriate dreams about the wiggles ! hee hee!

I watched bb last night - hmmmm don't know what I think just yet ...

mumpbump - fab news about your scan - mine was breech too, but that's not unusual!

Jersey & Tallis - Good luck for tomorrow!

soundbites from my ds:

we were doing some patterns: loops, and zigzags:

'Mammy, which is the zig and which is the zag?'

When I was in hospital at the weekend, I phoned home at 7pm to say goodnight:
ds:'Mammy who's looking after you in the night?'
me: 'the doctors - they have doctors here at night'
ds: 'oh ... are they nocturnal doctors?'

Mumpbump · 31/05/2007 10:11

Cute, EJT!

Floria - you really have been through the mill, haven't you? I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I have not yet lost a parent, but since my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and now lung cancer, am just beginning to get an inkling of how devastating it must be. Being pg can't help, I'm sure... Thinking of you...

ejt1764 · 31/05/2007 10:22

floria - thinking of you ... I can't begin to imagine how you're feeling - we're here if you need to unload. love and hugs!

Tallis · 31/05/2007 11:02

Hello all - just back from a lovely ten-day hol with dh and I feel really spoilt rotten. So much to catch up on - I feel very out of the loop.

Ejt I'm sorry you've been having such a tough time. Have you been signed off again, or have they calmed down after your scan was so positive? You always seem to be having to deal with this vile-sounding dep head. Could you not talk to the head instead - if this dep head is being so bullying I think he/she is on very sticky ground. My mum works in an HR dept and they have to (quite rightly...) walk on eggshells these days because the laws around pregnancy etc are so strict.

And J2O - I second all the others who (though this sounds a little sweeping...) reckon you're better off without the sperm donor. I've not been in your position, but we all know what it's like when you don't know where you are in a relationship because the other person is blowing hot and cold. In the end I think I prefer to know where I am...that way you can get on with coping and moving forward. He sounds so nasty it's unbelievable.

Got the dreaded 20-week scan tomorrow (fingers crossed for you, Jersey). Am jealous of you people who can look forward to them. I had terrible dream in which sonographer said, I'm very sorry but the baby has two heads. Not a good moment. Is it too much to hope for that all we Oct-due mums will have positive news to report? I can't bear the thought of the stats table having bad news on it. I know it's much less likely to get the bad news at this stage, at least.

But at least I've finally begun to feel movement down there (at 19+5). Like a goldfish nudging against a plastic bag, or a baby hippo blowing small bubbles that rise up through mud, is the only way I can think of describing the sensation. Quite peculiar!

greedygreedyguzzler · 31/05/2007 11:23

good news about your scan mumpy

good luck to the others with scans looming!

karlou · 31/05/2007 14:16

Great news mump and ejt. Good luck today tallis and jersey (hope you had a fab birthday!)

Sorry to hear of your loss Floria. I lost my mum to cancer when I was 22 (it will be 13 years this November) and still have down days, especially around the anniversary of her death....but it does get easier, or at least you kind of get used to it. My LO is due on 28th Oct but could easily be born on the day she died, 7th Nov - I'm not sure if I want that or not. On the one hand it would mean I had a reason to celebrate the day instead.....but then again...

FloriaTosca · 31/05/2007 15:45

Thanks for the sympathetic ears mump, ejt and Karlou. We have been through the wars over the last 12 months, with losing Robyn in September, Dads diagnosis in November, losing him in March and then Dhs "fit as a fiddle" uncle suddenly dropping dead on his usual 3 x a week 5 km jog in April. I can tell you something...I'm sick of wearing black!
Mump I'm so sorry about your Mum, my Dad had asbestosis and mesothelioma (a particularly nasty form of lung cancer that is only asociated with asbestosis) but I'm sure there is a lot more that can be done for her than there could have been for him. It just seems so unfair that she has to face it doesnt it, particularly after she has already been through so much. I do hope that the medical profession can work one of their daily miracles for her and with a grandchild on the way it will give her something to look forward to. Dad didnt know about this one;I was only 10 weeks along and he was too ill to have to worry about me again.
Thanks ejt, I'm feeling a bit better now; cleaned the kitchen and I've just been to see my Mum; she's bought me some maternity smocks because strangely enough she was feeling down this morning too, buying the tops made her feel better.
Karlou, I'm sorry to hear about your Mum too, that was a terribly young age for you to lose her at. I can understand how you still get upset, especially at times like this when a girl wants her Mum around. I was always such a daddys' girl and am finding it hard to cope with life without him. Our LO is actually due on 5th October..which would have been Mum and Dads 50th wedding anniversary..if it happens it would certainly be a distraction on the day for us all (when we had been planning a big celebration)but I have a feeling this one could come early..Dads birthday was 14th September...not without the bounds of possibility either for an old bird like me, and I know exactly how you feel about that too..either date for us could be a day of very mixed emotions. I hope your arrives just when it is needed!

j20baby · 31/05/2007 16:51

hi everyone, just a quick post because i am shattered, thanks again all, for your support re the sperm donor.

ft - you really have been through it lately, haven't you, you poor thing, i hope your feeling a little brighter.

tallis - i love the goldfish description, thats exactly what its like

sorry for all those having bad dreams, i haven't really had any bad ones, just wake up a lot to use the loo and then can't get back to sleep.

good luck for those with scans tommorrow.

i'm hoping to get an early night tonight because i'm tired, and i'm so ratty at the moment i think its best to hide from people and turn my phone off, its all the little things that keep p**sing me off, like i put a mirror up in dd's room today, one of them 3 peice wavy ones, the fittings where meant to be stuck on( apart from the bottom ones which i screwed) and it fell off, smashed and marked all her flooring, i felt like crying but was fuming, so i marched back to the shop and put a complaint in, my cat's kittens are driving me crazy, although the vet said they can go to there new homes on sat, and the bulders are messing me about with my kitchen, but hopefully it will be getting fitted 12th June and my dd seems to thrive on winding me up.

hmm not really a quick post at all, sorry for the rant everyone, i wouldn't bother reading all the above really, its just me moaning

OP posts:
j20baby · 31/05/2007 16:53

builders rather!

sorry again for the rant and has anyone thought of names for the next thread?

OP posts:
FloriaTosca · 31/05/2007 17:17

J20 Isn't that that what daughters are for? ...I've been winding my mum up since conception apparently and have become quite professional at it..it only takes a look for me to set her off now!
Oooh, sorry about the mirror ]sad] I'm sure it was just 7 minute bad luck, not the full 7 years. It is just one of those days isn't it? I used to think that some one was sat on a cloud and for amusement would pick on me to throw thunderbolts at whenever he was bored.
As for new thread names..well "growing into porkers" would continue the piggy bump theme for me!

Mumpbump · 31/05/2007 17:19

I like that one. Was trying to think of something clever to do with being half-way, but got nowhere.

greedygreedyguzzler · 31/05/2007 21:13

yeah! i like the porker title! i am a porker already! yippee!

FloriaTosca · 01/06/2007 08:25

Ok I know I said I'm "mrs I'm not buying anything before the birth" but; ... I've seen a few things that will probably be useful, like a breast pump and a microwave steriliser...has anyone got any advice on brands? Should they be new or would an e-bay bargain be ok? We also had a long talk with the mothers last night (they are the ones who are going to be baby sitting when I start teaching in the afternoons again) and the compromise is terry squares for when my Mum is here (she was a nursery nurse in the 60s/70s and they are what she was used to) and reusable shaped cotton or bamboo ones for us and Dhs Mum (though she would prefer disposables..)...I've seen the thread on here that rates "tot bots" highest..we were looking at all the different types and quite like the description (and price) of "little lambs"..has anyone got any experience of these?

Mumpbump · 01/06/2007 09:17

Morning all!

Floria - from a hygiene perspective, I bought a new manual breast pump last time. The electric ones are meant to be quite good, but very expensive and they can be a bit aggressive off-putting. Expressing is difficult and you need to be relaxed, not put off by electronic noises, plus I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it so didn't want to invest that much cash in it. I only used to express a couple of times a week and only got a few ounces at a time at most... So definitely glad I didn't spend the money on an electronic pump.

I got an Avent steam steriliser at an NCT Nearly New Sale - have a look on their website to see if there are any near you. They take 6 minutes so are really quick, but a bit bulky so if you only have a small kitchen, you might be better going down the Milton sterilising route.

I have bought a new cot of someone on here which I am picking up at the weekend - last time I bought a second hand one where you only needed one hand to drop the side. I found I just left the side down for most of the first few months so the one I'm buying now has a two-handed mechanism. I am also (finally) buying a cot-top changing table. We always just changed ds on a mat on the floor (also bought the mat from NCT NNS), but he is less wriggly if he's up high. It is worth having two mats so you can have a changing "station" both upstairs and downstairs.

I also got a Karri-me sling (which I loved) and so didn't buy a buggy until ds was 5 months old. I am in the process of buying a double-buggy, but more because the lady who will be looking after ds on Mondays has a daughter of a similar age.

I would only buy one packet of vest/sleepsuits as you never know what size baby you're getting until it arrives. Fitted sheets for the cot, rather than flat sheets because they're easier.

And an absolutely must-have for your labour bag if you're planning on breast feeding is nipple cream which you apply frequently in order to prevent problems, rather than cure them...

Lots of info there - sorry it's so long!!

Kittiwake · 01/06/2007 10:31

Morning

Lots of useful info there Mumpbump as a first timer this is a whole new world to me .

I have become and e-bay queen though, have already got some Tots Bots, a baby gym/playmat and a moses basket and am now obsessively looking at listings for slings and breast Pumps!

Good luck to Tallis for today.

I have finally been feeling the little one move around this last week took ages before I was sure that is what it was but definite now.

honeyapple · 01/06/2007 10:36

Hiya...Havent posted for a bit as this thread moves so fast i never have time to catch up... however, i do love giving my twopence worth to any talk of baby stuff and what not to buy!

floria- are you planning on expressing because you will be going back to work? For me I found it totally useless...I had a avent hand pump first time around and it was about as productive as just squeezing your boobs yourself. My sister had an electric one which was much better at doing the job (she went back to work so was able to express enough for her babies)...however the noise is pretty horrendous... and you will feel like a cow being milked . With my second baby I never even bothered trying to express. Fortunatley I wasnt working so this wasnt an issue. And I absolutely wouldnt get one second hand... I never had a steriliser as i never needed to sterilise anything.
Sorry Mumpbump- I have to disagree about nipple cream, never used it, can't see the point... put a bit of E45 on them maybe...

See I am an opinionated old moose!!

Nappies! Well it sounds great that your mum and MIL are all up for reusables. I am going to go for it this time... I had a nappy lady suggest motherease one size to me... should fit from 10lbs... she suggested using muslin squares for a newborn (with a wrap). Dunno about little lambs... cant they send you a trial pack? She also suggested I have a trial with some sized nappies... Tot Bots Cotton size 1 and Tots bots Fluffle size 1. This is made of polysester though... but drys super quick. I dont have a tumble dryer, so that's why she suggested it for me. However I have heard that they are really big and fluffy! Also no good as a
night time nappy. The Motherease will work out cheaper because it is one size... supposedly fits until potty training.
I think the cost is a lot to start up, but then in comparision to disposables, you will save loads. There is a nappy thread on MN... you should ask about little lambs on there.

Right, DC want to go swimming... yikes, got to squeeze my bazookas into a rather tight bikini ... hope I look PG now, not just fat, or that I need a big poo!

ByE!

honeyapple · 01/06/2007 10:39

kittiwake- great you have had some positive kicks!

You should try a carboot sale... or NCT sale, much cheaper than ebay. I got rid of loads of baby stuff at a car boot... in the end I was practically giving it all away. Sold my babybjorn sling for £3! ... wish i knew I was going to have another one then!

Kittiwake · 01/06/2007 14:00

Thanks Honeyapple I was realy excited it's such a strange feeling isn't it hard to explain to anyone else really .

I have looked at NCT but I live in the middle of nowhere in rural Wales so nothing near to me in fact nearest NCT group/classes are miles away. Carboot sales are good idea though will have to try those. Ebay is good for me as things get delivered!

I have some Fluffles and some Bamboozles that I got from e-bay they are new, not used. The Fluffles are certainly very fluffy but I can see how they would dry really quickly. I bought some to try, as I don't want to get a tumble drier either. They are lovely and soft despite not being cotton, so we will see how they go.

FloriaTosca · 01/06/2007 15:28

Kitti, glad you are feeling something now...not had many big kicks myself, just swimming sensations (22wks tomorrow)but it was like having a mini dolphin in there when I had a bath this week (only been showering since conception because we went on a water meter!) I really will have to start swimming again it looks like I've got a real water baby!
Thanks for all the useful the info Mump, dont worry about long messages, the more info the better as far as I'm concerned..we dont have to worry about upstairs and downstairs changing as we bought a bungalow in Nov! (anticipating elderly parents needing to move in eventually!)but hadnt even thought of sheets! and interesting to hear about the karrime sling...we are being given a pram but I was concerned about rough terrain when walking the dog, a sling would be easier (and probably make me burn off more calories!)
Thank you too Honey;...I hope not to have to express too much; I teach music from home which means I'll usually only unavailable for feeding for the odd hour or half hour here and there and our mothers are going to come in the afternoons/early evenings to baby sit while I'm busy, the expressing is so they can feed if LO demands food every 2 hours like I did! but I think that the breast pump had better be one of the things we leave until later and as Mump said, for hygiene reasons I'd better buy new...and who knows I may be one of those that just cant breast feed (I hope not). Thanks for the tip on car boots..I'll certainly be down at the next local one to see what bargains I can snap up!
Found a thread on here about little lambs..lots of differing opinions .. looks like I'll be buying trial packs of different types first before settling on one!

honeyapple · 01/06/2007 16:04

Hi Floria- You WILL absolutley be able to BF your baby . The MOST important thing is that you really want to, you are committed to it, and you wont give up! Even if your nipples are sore and you are tired! Perserverance (sp?) is the key to successful breast feeding, and not being put off by unsuccessful first attempts. i recommend you get good skin to skin/breast action ASAP as the baby comes out... if you have a vaginal delivery... babies have an amazing in built knowlegde of bFing, they root about straight away. . Enjoy it. BFing is the best thing... probably why I am having this LO.
