My first labour was long but I didn't have any intervention and recovered pretty quickly. It's worth reading up beforehand so you understand some of what might happen but the chances are that it won't. It's hard though even imagining being in labour first time round let alone that there will really be a baby at the end of it.

BunBunMum · 06/01/2018 11:16

Hi All
Can I join please?
I’m 34 and if all goes well this will be my DC2 as I have a 2yr old son. I had a mc before I had DS. I’m due on 27th august so towards the back of the ‘bus’!

Pollyp87 · 06/01/2018 11:21

Thanks for all the labour stories, I’m sure I’ll get my head round it in a few more weeks when it feels really. I know my pain threshold is very high and I’ve had a lot of gynae problems before so hoping it won’t be too shocking!

It’s only been the last couple of days that my boobs have started to hurt, that’s one symptom I’ve not really had. Slept for England last night though!!

Stephiewoo · 06/01/2018 11:31

Hey @BunBunMum how you doing?

This is one busy bus for sure!!!😃

BunBunMum · 06/01/2018 11:37

I’m good thanks Stephiewoo. Tired and a bit queasy but not sure if it’s pregnancy or the fact my toddler has been ill and sleeping even worse than normal! Not looking forward to going back to work and telling my boss next week (safety reasons for telling early). Looking forward to getting up to speed with the group!

peterpanwendy · 06/01/2018 11:51

So I've just had a look at all the old wives tales and they (along with the Chinese predictor) think I'm having a boy! It was about 7:5 boy:girl and obviously all the bump ones I couldn't do yet 🙈

I am 9 weeks today! The tablets have definitely kicked in. I still feel like I'm on a boat but I'm actually able to get up and do things (the house work really has been piling up!)

Also my DP surprised me this morning by saying he'd really like us to have an early scan so I have booked one for next Saturday when I'll be 10 weeks. If all is well I think I'll then tell my boss. 1 week of work to get through first!

BertieBotts · 06/01/2018 12:08

Wedding ring on string one for DS predicted a girl. Interesting because my mum is actually really into that dowsing stuff and sets a lot of store by it.

She reckons it's because he's "in touch with his feminine energy" Grin

peterpanwendy · 06/01/2018 12:17

@BertieBotts that tickled me Grin

This will be the first GC and first GGC on both sides for my family so it's very exciting. My side of the family has very few boys and DP's side is quite even so a boy would be fantastic, there hasn't been one born in years. I also have lots of boys names I like! For selfish reasons I'd like a girl, mainly because of the mother-daughter bond and the pretty girl clothes! I will be happy with either.

Hana327 · 06/01/2018 12:36

Hi all, I was previously on the other thread and missed this new thread due to being poorly!
@E2017 I know how u feel. Are u off work? I find bed rest the best thing!
Been prescribed anti-sickness tablets and currently off work with hyperemesis gravidarum. I'm feeling absolutely horrible! Can't eat or drink anything. Would do anything for just a normal day of wanting and being able to eat what I want.

Has anyone else struggled with this in previous pregnancies? When did u see an improvement?
I have no idea if we will have any more after this one with how ill I feel.
Sorry for the moan!

Gizzymum · 06/01/2018 12:45

@Babydreaming me too! I arrived half an hour after my first contraction fully dilated so no other options pain relief wise. I'm going to ask my midwife this time if there's any way to get more pain relief with such a short labour - perhaps induction with an epidural? Although my DS was 9 days early so I have no idea how early they'd have to induce...

Those who already have DC, how will you manage childcare and labour? I think we may have to either take DS with us or get very friendly with the neighbours in the hope we can just knock on their door in the early hours of the morning and they can babysit until my parents arrive (they live an hour away).

BertieBotts · 06/01/2018 12:53

I'm not sure yet. Because we're abroad it's much more tricky. It's possible we'll have family come to stay who can look after DS, but in reality nobody is going to want to come for six weeks just in case (plus, I'd kill them!) - possibly we can get people to overlap?? Who knows.

If not, DS has lots of school friends he might be able to go and stay with, I'll have to talk to them closer to the time, I do have friends with DC here as well so they might be able to take him at short notice too. We'll end up having to all have emergency childbirth bags packed for short notice use Grin I don't think I'd want to take him with me as I think I'd find it a huge distraction and really irritating, plus it might be frightening.

BertieBotts · 06/01/2018 12:56

Timing is quite good though being school holidays because whoever looks after him hopefully shouldn't have to worry about getting him to/from school on time. They don't go back until the 10th September, so should be enough time for him to come back home. Fingers crossed I don't go two weeks over, anyway! But if one of his school friends can have him, that part would be easy enough, at least.

TheSleeperandTheSpindle · 06/01/2018 13:11

Luckily my DM only lives 10 mins away so she’ll be able to look after DS even at short notice. She also has him for the 3 days I work so has plenty of stuff for him at her house too.

My first labour was relatively quick and straightforward. Waters broke at 5.30am, got to hospital at 9.30am fully dilated and DS was born at 12.25pm. No pain relief but did end up with a 2nd degree tear.

I listened to a hypnotherapy mp3 in the last few weeks of my pregnancy and it really helped keep me calm. It didn’t stop the pain but made me more able to cope. When I first arrived at hospital the midwife didn’t believe that I was ready to push until she examined me! I would really recommend it Smile

Stephiewoo · 06/01/2018 13:12

School hols with me too so very handy, only one issue for me and that none of the adults in the house drive, it's just me, my eldest is off to China again in August for a year. So need to book my C section in June probably to make sure everything ties in. Little one will probably be with her dad in Surrey, I'm hoping anyway!
Having a really emotional day, suffer badly with reactionary depression and anxiety and pretty much want to do a runner today 🙈🙄

CumbrianExile · 06/01/2018 14:10

Well my parents live 2.5 hours away and the PIL a flight away so I'm hoping my labour is as slow as last time to give someone a chance to get here Grin
Luckily we do have friends that we can call upon in the short term if needs be, will discuss with them nearer the time but can't see there being any issues.

My waters broke 48 hours prior to me giving birth, and my contractions were approx 24 hours after that! Went in the be induced and kept telling them I was already quite far along but they wouldn't believe me at first! Eventually checked and I was 7cm so not quite ready to push but certainly ready for the gas and air that I wanted! Once I got onto the delivery ward it was fine though. At least it must have been for me to do it again!

Sorry your not feeling too good Stephiwoo ThanksCake

RainbowsAndUnicorns23 · 06/01/2018 14:21

Silly question, but I've been eating pineapple ice lollies.. these are ok aren't they? Strange because usually i hate pineapple!! Haha.

peanut2017 · 06/01/2018 15:03

@Stephiewoo hope you are ok. I have anxiety too and have recently come off meds. Got prescribed others that more research have been done on but that gives me anxiety thinking that if anything happens then it would be my fault. Hope you will be ok.

@Gizzymum not sure about who will mind our son when in labour. In laws live an hour and a half away. Mother lives 20 mins but is nearly 72 years of age but works so not like a typical 72 year old.

My son will be around 16 months old so trying to picture what stage he will be at by then. My mother has only minded him twice in 8.5 months she's not the granny type

peanut2017 · 06/01/2018 15:05

@Stephiewoo plus you are having your 4th so you are bloody amazing for that alone

gkeen369 · 06/01/2018 15:18

My Labour was Looooooongg!! From first contraction to birth it was 46hrs but it's was ok. Just gas and air and the birthing pool.

@TheSleeperandTheSpindle I also used the hypnobirthing tracks and found it massively helpful. Even just the breathing exercises worked so well with the gas and air. I want exactly the same with this little one if it works out that way.

Herecomesanotheron2018 · 06/01/2018 15:20

For fellow sufferes of hyperemesis, there is a fantastic support thread on the pregnancy topic. I've found it really helpful. My meds have controlled the sickness but the nausea and gagging is still so debilitating. 🤞 those suffering get some relief soon.

My labour story isn't an overly positive one. It was a 42 hour labour. I can remember it was the worst pain ever, but I honestly can't tell you what it felt like or anything. It really is like that side of things just fades away.

I then had an emergency c section under a general anaesthetic. So not overly positive (sorry!) And I did have ptsd as a result afterwards. I have to say though, throughout the process of the decision being made for an emcs, prepping for theatre etc, although I was scared we might die, I still felt sooo safe in the hands of the doctors and anaesthetist. I just had to put my trust in them and they were amazing.

I know this birth will probably be a planned c section under a general anaesthetic, so I'm hoping it will be calmer this time. I plan to discuss my concerns and fears with my midwife and consultant though so they can put me (hopefully) at ease. I'd suggest anyone else worried speaks to their midwife too :)

I think some hospitals do tours of the hospital and wards from 39 weeks which might help put some of your minds at rest to be able to see where it all happens :)

StrawberryLemonade · 06/01/2018 15:24

My last labour is a total blur but it’s totally not the part of this whole experience that I’m worried about!! I was induced at 37 weeks and it was quite quick considering. I couldn’t tolerate Gas and air so had diamorphine as I wanted an epidural but they needed to wait for my bloods first due to potential clotting problems. When I did have my epidural it only partially worked but wasn’t too bad. I ended up with an instrumental delivery. But really wasn’t as bad as it sounds!

Aspergallus · 06/01/2018 15:30

Hello all.

Feeling just awful. Continous nausea, dry retching and diarrhoea. Tummy really bloated and tender.

This is so different from my first 2 pregnancies -I'm only 6 weeks and felt like this for over a week now. With DSes wasn't really feeling anything till 9 weeks.

I'm worried that something is wrong, perhaps this is a molar pregnancy. I just feel so much worse than with previous pregnancies.

Sorry to be so downbeat, just feel so grim.

Stephiewoo · 06/01/2018 15:38

Aww thanks @peanut2017 I've been on meds since 2003 and won't be off them. Lifelong complete imbalance.
I was on escitalipram with my last pregnancy and my GP at the time did so much research on them, they are safe, but always advisable to reduce them. So by March I will be down to 10mg until the end of the pregnancy. Chuck in a bit of gestational diabetes as well followed by SPD (floating pelvis and dodgy hips) all will be well in the end.😂😂

YouCantBeSirius · 06/01/2018 16:01

I'll be having an elective csection this time so my parents will take my DD and DSD overnight. They live a 30 minute drive from us but both work full time so if I were to go into labour earlier I don't think they'll be able to help so DP would need to stay home with our girls while I went to hospital myself.

Kiki275 · 06/01/2018 16:11

@aspergallus you poor thing, sounds horrific. The common denominator in your first two pregnancies was that they resulted in DS's... perhaps this one's different if you're expecting a girl. I'm sure I've seen a thread that says girls produce more of the vom inducing hormone (sorry not a very scientific explanation :))... or twins! Try not to worry, not easy I know but there could be many influential factors.x
