@Alice0606 Not many appointments. I'm getting extra scans because of my advanced maternal age and also because ds was tiny according to my personalised growth chart (I'm tall, broad shouldered, muscly and look like I should be producing baby rugby players whereas ds was a dainty little creature for the first couple of weeks).

I think I've got a scan at 28 weeks, plus a midwife appointment, a consultant app at 32 + a scan to book my repeat section and then a couple more midwife appointments. Oh and an anesthetist app in April to discuss a general anesthetic for the section.

@Northernbeachbum I think it depends how you are planning on sleeping. Some of my ante-natal class with ds spent a fortune on baby monitoring equipment but never used it because their babies were with them all the time. Ds never slept long enough at first to be put to bed without us until he was at least six or seven months old.

@Northernbeachbum @ClareB83
Ah, ok. I think I know the sort of monitor you mean. One where the baby sleeps on a mat, or has a sensor attached and it sounds an alarm if they stop breathing/heart stops beating? (I thought it was just the movement of breathing they detected, hence not realising what you meant straight away.)

We’re not getting one, we’ve got a snuzpod so our little one will be right next to me at night. Smile I think they can be reassuring for anxious parents, particularly if there isn’t space for baby in the same room. On the other hand, I’ve seen some people say they often get false alarms - so it might end up being more stressful.

Sorry, that’s probably not terribly helpful. I think it really just comes down to your sleeping arrangements and whether or not you think it would give you some peace of mind.

Shutupanddance1 · 15/03/2018 05:12

I have the angel care monitor with the sensor mat underneath. To prevent false alarms we put a small piece of MDF cut out to same size as the mat for under it, from what I know most false alarms are due to the mat slipping on the slats on the cot.

I found it very reassuring, especially them first couple of weeks of sleeplessness when the worst things possible would be running through my head like ‘is the baby still breathing/alive/ok/still on their back?’ - I’d still wake up in the middle of the night to check.

My friend has a sleepyhead I think? I wasn’t keen on it when I looked at it but different strokes.

Northernbeachbum · 15/03/2018 06:52

Yes I mean that style for after they arrive sorry. DP is keen but I'm not sure I want to spend the money. He will be in with us but the cot has to go at the foot of the bed as that's the only place it fits. @shutupanddance1 would you recommend the version you had?

I think we might try without using the sleepyhead and then see how it goes. I'm getting a MyHummy too so maybe that will do it alone (does it show I am paranoid I'll have a non sleeping baby!).

I like the idea of reusable nappies, but probably for when they're a bit older and going through less. Maybe after a year old, I'm not sure whether I can face the increase in washing!

Cookie1831 · 15/03/2018 08:45

I had a sleepy head for my second and it was a god send I have heard they aren’t recommended but no definite link to SIDS but am going to have a read again, we are non smokers and I tend to have average sized bubs so low risk otherwise but totally agree it is individual choice, similarly didn’t use any angel care monitor etc x
I have hardly any appts this time because it’s baby number 3 saw midwife at 16 weeks, scan at 20 and then midwife again at 28 weeks x

ElizabethLemon · 15/03/2018 09:13

@Alice0606 yes I said to my H that the abdomen size may be pushing up the overall estimate. I’ve got another scan at 32 weeks then again at 36 weeks so we’ll see what happens.

This week I’ve had the scan, a GTT and community midwife appointment. It’s been a busy week and I do feel like I’ve been prodded and probed quite a lot! Next up is an appointment with the midwife at the hospital week after next then at 31 weeks I’ll see the community midwife again.

We’ve not got a sleepyhead or monitor! Sleepyheads weren’t around when I had my 1st but I have read good things about them as well as the safety concerns. We went to get a few bits from John Lewis the other day and the assistant was really pushing the sleepyhead and was full of praise. We won’t be getting one though. Baby will be in with us for about a year so don’t really need a monitor either.

I don’t like the idea of reusable nappies but I know that it would be too much for me in reality. I did suggest reusable wipes to H but he wasn’t keen.

Ca55andraMortmain · 15/03/2018 09:22

We had an angelcare mat with DD and it drove me bonkers. She was an absolutely dreadful sleeper and I kept forgetting to switch the bloody thing off before I took her out of her crib to feed her and it went off every time and scared us both shitless! I've heard you can get ones that clip to their nappies so don't go off just from lifting them up!

We've used cloth nappies with DD since birth so if anyone has any questions about them fire away!

Shutupanddance1 · 15/03/2018 09:25

@northernbeachbum - i’d Recommend getting a monitor as it meant after 6 months once she was going to bed we could go downstairs and relax for an hour or two - we still use it now when we are sitting out on the terrace and DD is inside asleep. I got mine off a friend second hand so didn’t have to pay full price for it - perhaps you could get one on a buy and sell page if you don’t want to spend too much? I’d recommend the angel care one on that I’ve never had any problems with it and the range on the monitor is good.

I know a lot of my friends have the video monitors but I think they would make me even more paranoid! I have no idea about sleepyheads, they seem very expensive for what they are?

Northernbeachbum · 15/03/2018 09:42

@cookie1831 great to hear the positive review. We bought ours officially second hand off a friend but they'd never used it as their baby slept anyway

I will definitely look at second hand monitors......most things apart from the mattress have been second hand to be honest as I can't see the point of new

Cookie1831 · 15/03/2018 09:47

We are bad parents we have a video monitor but never even got it out of the drawer for DC2 and he was in the nursery from 10 weeks..... we have an old house so you do heat every grunt and fart though Smile
My DH thought I was mad buying the sleepyhead as expensive but he was 3 or 4 weeks old and there first night in it he slept for 6 hours straight it was a miracle!!!
