congratulations to SOSPL

and well done OCTO for the school appeal - must be such a relief.

Some advice needed please. This might seem really petty, but its about ds1 name. In case you didn't know, he's called Joshua. Me and dh chose it because a:we really love it, and b:because it can be shortened and still sound like a proper name iyswim. But (and I just know this is going to sound petty) we hate it when people just write Josh on cards. I think its so lazy that they can't be bothered to write the ua at the end. Granted, when he was born, some people did ask us will he be a Joshua or Josh, and we did say he'll be known as Joshua, and thats what we'll call him, but this being the real world, chances are he'll get called Josh (including us)
Its got to me a bit more since Williams birth, so not sure if I'm being unreasonable. Any advice appreciated.
(think I might stick this on the AIBU thread)

Hi all,
just checking in to say hello and wave to everyone >

Not going to get much time on here in the foreseeable future so wanted to say well done to all you ladies with your babies... and some amazing birth stories.

Not wanting to put anyone off, but mine was pretty awful..... only on gas and air so pain was pretty painful and had 3 contractions between getting out of the car and getting into delivery suit and the biggest water break in history over the car park floor as DH is frantically trying to mop me up and I had a giant bath towl between my legs (incase I floated away) but once in the suit only had 2 hrs of second stage labour and time to push ....however cord was round babies neck, and had 1doctor, 3 midwives the registrar and 2 pedriatians in room at one point. DH was crying and they were blasting over the tannoy...emergency in delivery suit 1 so DH told me later..... as Ethan was v blue and took 90 second to resusitate... but hes fine now. I remember them all shouting at me - you have to get this baby out in the next push... nothing like pressure... and I'm still to scared to hae a poo now incase everything falls out!!

So labour vibes to all you ladies out there and no matter how tough it gets, when its an emergency all hospitals are AMAZING!

love Mand
xxxx

elkiedee · 20/04/2007 12:28

Congrats to SOSPL, and such a speedy delivery too.

I was struggling to sleep, first because of acid/thinking I'd be sick, then just as I was settling, someone decided to pull in for a bit of nookie outside our house, in the back of the car - engine running the whole time (about 15 minutes). What a cheek! This was about 1.30 am.

My final GP's appt this morning, nothing really beyond what I knew from last week's.

Got home to find cat has been sick on the bed again. I really can't handle this, I love having them upstairs at night and in the morning when we wake up, but they're heading for much more limited time in the bedroom in the day....

Octo - great news on the school appeal, what a relief for you all. The whole school application process is a nightmare as there is no guarantee you'll get what you want, so you've done fabulously well to win through on the appeal.

Runny - don't really know what you should do on the Josh/Joshua issue. It would annoy me too if I was in your position. I think all you can do when people are talking to you is correct them, and ensure that whenever you write Joshua's name down you write the full version. Also, always call him Joshue when you speak to him as he may well start to correct people too. My SIL has a rather long, unusual name that we always shortened when we first met her (probably as we felt it was such a mouthful), until my BIL told us off about it. I would never dream of calling her by the shortened version now, it just wouldn't suit her as we've now got used to it.

Well am having a very lazy day today. Dh took Em to school and I am still slobbing around in my dressing gown & have been back to bed for a sleep. Very unlike me. Just having lunch then must kick my arse into gear and do something.

runnyhabbit · 20/04/2007 12:42

Emmy - It is difficult, because part of me thinks I should've nipped it in the bud (he's nearly 2) but its only started to be more obvious recently, and its on dh side of the family. (tbh, I know that I'm very lucky if this is the only real gripe I have in my life)

I'm hoping that they'll ask what William will be known as, then I can I get in about how I feel about Joshuas name being shortened, without making a huge seperate deal out of it iyswim.

Emmymummy · 20/04/2007 12:46

So I assume then that William will be known as William, and not Will / Wills / Bill etc? Yes you've just got to assert it from the off I think and everyone will get used to it. Funnily enough though my mum used to refer to Emily as Em and it really annoyed me at the time. Now Dh & I almost always call her Ems, so we all end up doing it!

runnyhabbit · 20/04/2007 12:50

Yes, William will be William (although dh has called him Willy a few times, but I think thats just to wind me up)

Emmymummy · 20/04/2007 12:52

Bet he'd never call him that in public!

Bugmum · 20/04/2007 12:55

Dippy - Now look what you've done: I didn't know about angeltots, and the new baby now has a denim-print wrap, and both he and DS have a groovy stuffable in a great print. Plus I had to have some of the mint green fleece liners and a pack of terry boosters...to go with all the other liners and boosters I've already ordered

runny - Tricky one. How much do you hate the shortening? If you don't actually hate it, I'd bite the bullet, although I do think that always referring to him by his full name, and bringing it up if there's a discussion of William's name, are both good ideas. Oddly, the name we've chosen for the new baby we have already chosen the shortening for (in as much as you can control these things!) and when we send the announcements, will do: Names, to be known as Nickname.

maveta · 20/04/2007 12:58

Good luck with dh CD !! Have a lovely quiet p.m. to yourself.. what are your plans?

LLL - thanks for sharing your birth story - nothing can put us off at this stage LOL! It´s good to hear even the scarier stories because at the end of the day you all got through it okay and you´ve got your baby so it still helps to reassure IYKWIM?

Runny - not sure what you can do about the name, you can try and make your point but TBH people can be very pigheaded - my name is spelt with an ´ie´ at the end, not a ´y´ and people I have known all.of.my.life. INCLUDING FAMILY MEMBERS!! Have some kind of blind spot to this point. This despite my parents telling them, ME telling them, signing my name off with a giant IE at the end but I don´t know, it´s hard to get some things through to people. Do you ever call him Josh? If not you can probably get in the habit of correcting people every time but if you guys do call him that too sometimes it´s going to be hard for people to understand when they are allowed to use it and when not. I do sympathise and can imagine it is annoying.

Elkie - cat sympathies as always from here.. not had any vom from them lately, but I´ve had a couple of near misses finding my cat imitating puss in boots from Shrek trying to cough up a hairball on my bed. He gets very unceremoniously dumped off! Our other cat sleeps on the spare bed during the day and loves it, this is now also the baby´s room and went in yesterday to find he´d been sharpening his claws on the brand new rug that MIL had bought the baby. Just about FREAKED OUT on him. So that room is officially out of bounds now.

Hi Emmymummy!!

Emmymummy · 20/04/2007 13:12

Hi Maveta!! I get that with my name too. I am ClaIre, but people still insist on writing Clare or, worse still, Clair. Sometimes I feel like replying to people with my name in capital letters so they get the idea.

Em would love a cat for her birthday, but yours & Elkie's experiences are just the sort of things that put me off (also dh hates cats, plus we have a busy road outside our house and cats are always getting knocked down, so not fair really). She's getting a goldfish instead

runnyhabbit · 20/04/2007 13:15

Maveta - I have the same problem with my name (but ends in y, not ie) my so called godmother still gets in wrong. Although tbh, I don't see her that often, and even though my mum (its her sister) has corrected her for the past 31 years, she still takes no notice, so guess there's no hope!

Do you still think I can still blame getting worked up about things on hormones?

Emmymummy · 20/04/2007 13:18

Runny - could still be hormones - try eating lots of chocolate and see if that makes you fell better .

Right, should I get off my bum and have a shower now?

runnyhabbit · 20/04/2007 13:24

mmmm - chocolate have got more of craving for it now than I ever did whilst pregnant.

Fancied chip shop chips yesterday for dinner - told dh that baby wanted them. He looked bemused, and reminded me that I wasn't pregnant. But I told him, that as I'm bf, baby choses his food through me

He must've have fallen for it, cos we called into the chippy

Emmymummy · 20/04/2007 13:27

LOL Runny. I was hoping that having the baby would kick-start me into a fabulous, healthy diet, but maybe it won't then! I do remember when I got home from hosp after having Em I HAD to have chip-shop chips too, so maybe all bf babies crave them (via mummy)!

nuttygirl · 20/04/2007 14:06

Congrats to Eca and SOSPL (and anyone else I haven't congratulated yet!)

LLL - birth story sounds v dramatic, glad everything's ok...and the 1st poo isn't as bad as you'd think (although it's v scary!!!)

Thanks CD for the witch hazel tip...it's working a treat!!!

Well DVT scan was clear but have been to docs today because my back is v sore. Have been given some exercises to do and told to take plenty of painkillers. Means I'm managing to escape nappy duty .

ILs coming tomorrow so hoping that everyone gets along . Feeling a bit like piggy in the middle with mum & DH...mum v relaxed about everything, DH worrying loads...ARGH.

zazas · 20/04/2007 14:36

Hello - well I was in labour and I did have my baby!

Sienna Grace arrived at 10.07 this morming 7lbs 9 ounces - 10 days late but all perfect. It was an incredible, wonderful labour, at home in the pool. Such a contrast to my csection emergency under a general last time!

I can't tell you fantastic I feel, no pain relief, no tears (except ones of joy) and a beautiful litttle baby asleep beside me.

Thank you all for the wonderful support over the last few days as I doubted I would ever go into labour - power of positive thought brought this one on xxxxx

Emmymummy · 20/04/2007 14:38

Zazas - congratulations, that's wonderful. I'm so pleased you had such a positive experience, particularly compared to your last birth. Well done!

Runny - beautiful photos, William is gorgeous.

I want mine now!!!!

Katy44 · 20/04/2007 14:46

CONGRATULATIONS ZAZAS

I haven't had any emails Think LuceWheel was going to send one a few days ago, and then the photos! Can someone resend them to me, please?

Bramshott · 20/04/2007 14:53

Oh brilliant Zazas - you must be relieved!! Congrat too to SOSPL, Lucewheel and anyone else I've missed.

Nutty - glad to hear scan was clear, but sorry you are still suffering.

Rushing now as Orla is crying in the bathroom (well she seemed happy in there before, just lying on her change-mat - bad parenting, me?!? ) Niamh watching Jungle Book video for 50millionth time but sod it!

Katy44 · 20/04/2007 14:53

The waiting list is now very short!
