Thanks @Decaff! I'd highly recommend a private scan - I treasure the NHS and won't say a bad word about them but having the extra time in the private scan meant it could be so much more detailed. Even though it was just a dating scan she ruled out NT defects and took measurements of the head, stomach, thigh bone and CRL, as well as ensuring the brain was developing symetrically. It was absolutely amazing, the best 15 minutes of my life! We're going to have another one at 18 weeks (as my big scan isn't until 22 weeks and because I have an anterior placenta I won't feel any kicks before 25 weeks ish). Will probably find out the gender then! Exciting!

@Gemxo, @thingymaboob I had 4 days of bliss with no sickness and then last night, BOOM - worse than ever! Though thankfully even at its worst I'm only sick twice a day, and I've kind of got used to the constant nausea!

Gemxo · 24/07/2017 14:50

Can being off so much (work) in the beginning of pregnancy affect my stat maternity pay?

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 15:01

@Gemxo not as far as I'm aware but your 6 weeks smp goes off what you've earnt 8 weeks before leaving

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 15:18

@Gemxo There's a good article here: www.maternityaction.org.uk/advice-2/mums-dads-scenarios/pregnant/sickness-during-pregnancy-and-maternity-leave/

Basically, your SMP will be unaffected UNLESS you're on statutory sick pay during your SMP qualifying period. You can find out your qualifying date here: www.sdworx.co.uk/resources/smp-dates-calculator If you're on SSP during the eight weeks/two months before that date, your SMP could be impacted.

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 15:21

@Victoriaaaaaaaa I think your SMP is calculated based on what you earn 8 weeks / two months (depending on if you get paid weekly or monthly) before your qualifying date, isn't it? And the qualifying date is 15 weeks before your due date.

NI Direct (same rules as the rest of the UK, just summed up more clearly!) says: "your employer will average your gross earnings over a period of at least eight weeks up to and including the last payday before the end of your qualifying week. The qualifying week is the 15th week before the week your baby is due."

Gemxo · 24/07/2017 15:28

This was my results, so am I right in saying my smp will only be affected if I'm off after October 8th? So me being off now is not affecting my mat pay?

January Babies #4 - Blooming in to second trimester!
peachgreen · 24/07/2017 15:34

@gemxo No, it's the 8 weeks or 2 months BEFORE that week. So from August 8th (if you get paid monthly) or August 13th (if you get paid weekly). And that's only if you receive statutory sick pay.

So time off now is fine.

That's my understanding, anyway - but best to double check with your HR team.

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 15:36

This is mine I'm very interested to know now @Gemxo

@peachgreen as gem said

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 15:37

But don't you only get so much from employer for 6 weeks and then standard for rest? So won't it only affect the first 6 weeks pay?

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 15:43

@Victoriaaaaaaaa They work out what your average weekly earnings are based on that 8 week period. So if you were on Statutory Sick Pay for any or all of that period, it would lower your average weekly earnings. So:

  • For the first 6 weeks you'd get 90% of your average weekly earnings based on that calculation
  • For the the remaining 33 weeks you'd get £140.98 UNLESS your average weekly earnings were less than that, in which case you'd get 90% of that

As statutory sick pay is only £89.35, if you were off sick and only getting SSP for that entire 8 weeks, your SMP would be much lower. If you just have a couple of days off here and there it won't be impacted much at all.

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 15:44

But I'm not an expert so definitely best to check with your own HR department or Citizen's Advice!

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 15:46

So it's not affecting it now but will be in August? So say I have 2 weeks off in August and carry on at work as I do now that shouldn't affect it below that amount? I'm really not well enough to go back yet 😩

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 16:01

It's hard to say how much impact it would have if you have 2 weeks off in August without knowing how much you earn per week, but I would imagine it would probably only impact the first 6 weeks, as it's unlikely to take your average weekly earnings down below £140.98.

Basically, your SMP is calculated based on weeks 17-25, so you should try to avoid having time off sick then if you can. But your health and the baby's health are the most important.

Here's an example. Say you earn £18k a year. Your weekly earnings are £346.15 before tax. That means for the first 6 weeks you'd receive £311.54, and for the remainder you'd receive £139.58.

If you were on SSP for 2 weeks during that 8 week qualifying period, your average salary would drop to £281.95 (£346.15 (normal pay) x 6 + £89.35 (SSP) x 2, all divided by 8 to get the average). That means for the first 6 weeks you'd receive £253.76, and for the remainder you'd receive £139.58. So only the first 6 weeks would be affected.

But if your average weekly pay for that 8 weeks drops to between £112 - £140.98, all your maternity payments would be reduced. If your average pay dropped below £112 you wouldn't qualify for SMP and would get Maternity Allowance instead.

Again, it's only am issue if you get SSP - if you're paid in full for your sick leave, it won't be impacted at all.

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 16:02

If you want to PM me how much you get paid I can do the calculations for you. It's really confusing, I know!

Again, I have to emphasise that I'm not an expert and you should definitely seek advice from your own work / Citizen's Advice.

MegRam · 24/07/2017 16:50

@peachgreen is right in theory, but you absolutely must speak to your HR department. Your tax code and company benefits also affect the total amounts you receive, as well as your company policy - this is particularly true if you have any benefits in kind.

Your payroll department (or provider) should provide you with a payment schedule, but the timeline of that can vary hugely, so the best you can do is have an open and frank discussion with someone in your HR team and ask for guidance.

Statutory maternity stuff is pretty simple, but it's the variability of your individual professional and financial circumstances as well as company policy which makes it very complicated.

I work in HR operations.

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 17:24

Thank you @MegRam, I couldn't agree more that it's vital to speak to your own HR department. But glad I got the basics right!

Tax is definitely a whole other minefield...

Roseandbee · 24/07/2017 18:07

I've actually been in my qualifying period since the 11th of July (despite only be 14 weeks preg currently), i get paid monthly on the 10th of each month. My 15 week date is the 7th of Oct, and you have to take your last pay day before that date, which for me would be 10th of sept and count back 8 weeks from then. So its 8 weeks before your last pay day before the qualifying week, if your paid monthly.

BELLAARA · 24/07/2017 18:26

Hello, just wanted to tip my hat and join this thread.
Just over 16 weeks and due 7th Jan. Thanks so much to those who have posted bump pics- I've been a bit worried I'm showing large due to eating too much Shock but it's nice to see the range and know it's all normal.

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 18:51

I've gotta wear my hubbys boxers to keep my pants up instead of rolling down 🙈🙈

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 18:52

Only 14+4 think some of it is bloat still but definitely a bump coming from abdomen!

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 20:54

@Roseandbee That's really useful and important to know for anyone who gets paid monthly - thank you?

peachgreen · 24/07/2017 20:54

Sorry that was meant to be an exclamation mark not a question mark! I was being sincere with the thank you!

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 21:12

@peachgreen it's amazing how one thing can change how the sentence is supposed to be taken!

Roseandbee · 24/07/2017 22:33

Lol @peachgreen I was so hoping I'd get my date moved at my scan so it wud start a month later (stupid 10th of the month payday), as I've been feeling dreadful these past weeks but feel the I couldn't be off sick. It's lucky I work from home as I've only got through by working on a laptop in bed.

Hi Bella congrats!

I'm pretty sure part of my bloated stomach is a real bump now as there just no sucking it in. I'm really struggling with my jeans, they are all digging in despite being below my belly. I've ordered some maternity ones to try on but I wonder if it's too early.
Btw it sucks having to buy online, jean shopping is a nightmare for me at the best of times

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 24/07/2017 23:29

@Roseandbee tell me about it! Went to about 6 stores for them all to tell me they don't stock in store ordering online is only way! 😩
