verso - you ramble away, girl! a post-natal doula may well be able to look after lo while you catch up on some shut-eye ... I remember the hysterical hallucination stage .... not great - although for me it happened while I was in hsopital, as they were so short staffed, that I got no help at all!

My mum, when ds was 7 days old, told me off for picking him up every time he cried, as she said I'd 'spoil him' ... I didn't pay any attention to that - and ds isn't the slightest bit spoilt!

J20 - I know it's quite pricey (or not, depending on where you live, and whether you have a trainee), but could you hire a doula? Has anybody else got any ideas?

Hello all

I haven't told anyone yet except DH and my boss so not sure what the reaction will be fuss wise DH has been great though. suspect my mum will go a bit mental as first grandchild. Haven't really thought about help after the birth - one step at a time and I guess it'll be easier without other little ones around.

Had my booking in appt. today was really nervous as I'm such a newbie to all this but midwife was lovely. I thought that as a 1st timer I would have to have baby at the hospital in Abergavenny but she said it is fine to go to the midwife led unit in Brecon (all being well) or to have a water or even home birth yay! Also I was really worried that I am a bit overweight and that I would be high risk because of this but she didn't mention it so I asked and she was really laid back about it and said I was low risk. 1 week, 2 days to scan so happy this long wait is nearly over when does everyone else have theirs must be a few coming up?

ejt1764 · 19/03/2007 17:55

Hi Kittiwake - great news about your booking appointment - FWIW you may well be better off booking a home birth anyway, as it's easier to change your mind to the hospital option than it is to do it the other way around!

Thats good news Kittiwake. I know its early days but do you have a preference for what you might do. Water birth sounds great, i spent a whole day in the bath when I was in labour. In the end I didnt even get out to wee as it hurt so much more. Sorry if TMI

J20 I cant believe you have to be on your own at the birth. I cant really think of any other ideas other than a doula if you can afford one. Does your dd go to nursery? Ds's carer often babysits for him so could that be an option while you give birth?

Verso, your ramble was lovely and you love you child, cant say fairer than that.

I just love the way we all moan about our parents. Mine used to turn up to "give me a break" and proceed to sit on their backsides holding ds while I made tea. I will be tougher this time round thats for sure.

ejt, very impressed with the singing at the rugby. you are now my tenous claim to fame!

I remember the lack of sleep hallucinations. In hospital I thought ds looked like my dad, and I got really freaked out after 10 minutes of sleep all night, as I kept thinking I was trying to breastfeed a mini dad. Very freaky

Kittiwake · 19/03/2007 18:20

Hello Kezza lol! Not sure what I will do needs further thought midwife said that the birthing pool could be used for pain relief even if I didn't want a water birth. Don't think I would be able to wee in the birthing pool at the midwife unit but who knows by that stage maybe I won't care what are you going to do this time around?

J20BABY · 19/03/2007 18:24

theirs no way i could afford a doula, haven't even looked!

my dd goes to school so if i could go into labour and have it all done and dusted between 9 and 3 one day, that would be good

i'm sure i'll be fine, i'll sort something out.

haven't even thought about home/water/hospital birth yet, whats everyone else having? a water birth sounds lovely, maybe i could just stay at home and have it in the bath

J20BABY · 19/03/2007 18:31

p.s is anyone having problems with swollen legs, they are really itchy too, s'pose i'll have to go see gp when i get chance.

ejt1764 · 19/03/2007 18:44

J20 - that could be one way around the whole problem of childcare ... have the lo at home! Then your bf can be there for you and your dc ...

Kitti - they'll have had a lot worse than wee in the birthing pool at the hospital, believe me! If you look closely, they'll be a fishing net or equivalent next to it ... that's not for scooping babies out of the water ....

ejt1764 · 19/03/2007 18:45

J20 - I'd get thee to thy GP ASAP - swelling this early on is unusual ...

J20BABY · 19/03/2007 18:47

i will try to get in this week, may be water retention, but they ache from the swelling, if you know what i mean, just have to put my feet up wont i

Kittiwake · 19/03/2007 18:54

Ejt - I have so much to learn
congrats on Saturday by the way must have been such a fantastic atmosphere and a great result for you too

vitomum · 19/03/2007 18:57

hello all. i haven't posted on this thread since early on its first incarnation. I could probably gestate this baby in the ammount of time it would take me to catch up on everything that's happened since then on the thread(s) so i hope it is OK to crash back in from time to time. i would be really interested in hearing when people are getting their scans. I got my appointment today and firstly it's on Friday 13th (yikes) of april, and secondly i will be nearly 16 weeks by then. I'm really disappointed it's still so far away. anyone else in the same boat?

ejt1764 · 19/03/2007 19:23

hi vitomum - feel free to crash in and out as you need ... my scan is on Thursday - the trusts around here do a scan between 12 - 14 weeks - and I'll be 12+2 ... on the one hand I want it to come quickly, but on the other hand, this is a big milestone for me (my last pg, I had a mmc, which was detected at my dating scan at 13+1 - I had had no notion before then that anything was wrong)

I'm looking at Thursday with a mixture of sheer terror and nervousness ...

Kitti - hee hee! Saturday was fabulous - really worth the effort and hard work we put in ... what's nice is that although the TV series has finished, a lot of us are going to carry on singing together as a supporters' choir - and the club have said they'll welcome us back to sing at matches. It would have been a real shame to have not carried on afterwards - I've met some superb people!

MrsFish · 19/03/2007 20:49

ejt - that is exactly what happened to me, found out at my 12 week scan last october. I was so nervous when I went this time, but it was just amazing to finally get it over with and actually see something moving on the monitor. Good luck for thursday

greedyforbabies · 19/03/2007 22:22

i had a water birth last time ladies. it does sound lovely and in some ways i guess it was. i found it really uncomfortable at the pushing stage cos i wanted to get into all sorts of weird positions to push (as you do!) and the midwife kept pushing my arse down and telling me to keep my bits under the water! i didn't feel as if i could get into the best position for me. also i had to get out of the pool holding baby still attached via cord and placenta still inside me and try and manoeveur myself onto the bed without slipping over or dropping the baby! NOT EASY!!!! i would say a water birth is good for pain relief but i wouldn't recommend actually pushing the baby out in the pool!............................oh! and there's the bits of poo floating around to contend with too!

not sure what to try this time!!!

J20BABY · 20/03/2007 09:32

nice greedy... really looking forward to the floating poo, it'll be like going to the beach and swimming in the sea

Will be back to write a proper post in a bit...

Mumpbump · 20/03/2007 12:17

Morning all! Am absolutely exhausted today as ds has not been sleeping well for the last few nights. I haven't got enough energy to concentrate and do some work which is a bit of a problem although work quite quiet so not too bad...

Vitomum - is your scan a dating scan? If it is meant to be a nuchal fold scan, there is only a small window in which they can do it.

Kittiwake - childbirth was one of the most humiliating experiences in my life. You get everyone peering at your most intimate parts, lots of bodily fluids everywhere and no modesty left by the end of it. The only thing I was pleased about was that I didn't sh*t myself in front of dh! Also banned him from being anywhere near my nether regions for the whole event, especially when they were stitching me up!

J20 - I agree, go and get your swelling checked out. If you are thinking of a homebirth, my m/w also said that it's easier to book it and change your mind at the last minute, than to go for a hospital birth and try to swap to a homebirth at the last minute.

Greedy - I wanted a home birth or a water birth last time, but ended up being induced so had to be monitored all the time. I did get into the bath when the contractions first kicked off and that certainly helped, I think...

Hello to everyone else! Hope everyone else is feeling okay today...

Kittiwake · 20/03/2007 12:23

Have added myself in good luck to those who have scans tomorrow

Mumpbump 21st March
Kezza 23rd March
ejt 22nd March
Kittiwake 28th March
vitomum 13th April

Greedy not so sure about the water birth now I have a bit of a strange phobia about being in the sea when there is seaweed in it or even washing up water with bits in it (stop laughing!)
