Due to recent sad news and at the suggestion of others, I have started this new thread. Let's hear everyone's news.......

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Nicki10 · 15/03/2007 13:38

Ready Girls here's my list of course I haven't purchased anything yet and won't do until after my 21 week scan but this is what we will be buying!.

Bugaboo Cameleon - Grey and Orange
Maxi Cosi Cabrio - Happy flowers for a girl green for a boy
Stokke Sleepi cotbed - Animals bumper and sheets
Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair - They are amazing in Animals
White Company sleeping bag in white
Tots Bots Bamboozles terry nappies - they're so cute and very soft and good for the enviroment
Cath Kidston Cowboy change bag
Mamas and Papas lottie play mat
Bouncy chair from Lulu Sapphire in chocolate and blue/pink
Clothes from Lulu Sapphire and my mum has already started knitting the cutest blanket and a teddy bear outfit.

It's terrible isn't it but I can't stop.

RE discussion on reusable nappies I have always wanted to use them as research has shown that it's nicer for the baby and they have less chance of developing nappy rash as they're softer. Also nowadays they are so easy as they're designed like a disposable anyway that you don't have to mess around with poo and things so I couldn't really find an excuse to use disposable. I was thinking that maybe it's more work but it's really not now they're so good and if I said that to my mum she'd go of in rant mode about how mothers had coped with Terry's clothes for the past 50 years without filling up landfill sites with plastic!. So I will definetly be using reuable!!

Nicki10 · 15/03/2007 13:39

I wish I was at work but when my company found I was pregnant they laid me off and now I can't get a job in my industry as it's so closely knit that they all know and won't employ a pregnant woman. I work in Stage Management.

So I'm desperately trying to find something to do and suggestions greatly appreciated

Nettee · 15/03/2007 13:40

I used washable nappies for the first 18 months or so with DS - not terries but one of the easier types with velcro - They were fine and not that much hassle to wash/soak etc. I didn't use a tumble drier and soaked then washed on a cool wash so probably was ok for the environment. They did leak more often than disposables and at around 18 months DS would flood the largest size suddenly which is why I gave up on them in the end. I don't think I used the best avaiable brand though.

Re Buggies - I have a bugaboo (very expensive I know but it was a pressie from the grandparents). I like it because it is light, steerable, flexible in that the baby can face either way and you can push the big wheels first over rough terraine. Down sides are that it is a pain to fold until you get used to it and it is really wide for going around town.

EnormousChangesAtTheLastMinute · 15/03/2007 13:47

we use re-usable nappies and they're great. much less prone to leaking than disposables and not covered in horrible disney characters or sold by those awful ads on telly (i've got a 'thing' about disposables). must confess dh does most of the washing of them - but he doesn't complain so can't be too bad! we use disposables (some env friendly type) for when dd goes to childminder. also re-usables ooodles cheaper. we use motherease and bought them via fab 'the nappy lady' website. you get your own advisor who tells you what types would suit you best after filling a questionaire out and gives you advice on everything for ever more. the nappy lady

Pennypops · 15/03/2007 13:55

Hey Nicki10 - how about suing the people that laid you off when you announced your pregnancy. That's completely illegal isn't it?

EnormousChangesAtTheLastMinute · 15/03/2007 13:55

nicki10 that's terrible! i'm guessing they didn't give your pregnancy as the reason for laying you off so you've got no comeback?! shocking.
Nettee - guess it depends what type you use - we have motherease and find them great on the no leak front.
We have a bugaboo too (also purchased by grandparents!) and i have a love/hate relationship with it. great for all the things you mention but rubbish at folding and i don't like the rainhoood - awkward to fit and the hood needs to be fully up which dd doesn't like. But these are niggles really, i've never used anything else so suspect i take its manouverability and flexibility (forward/backard facing) and multi-terrain aspect for granted.

Hopeitwontbebig · 15/03/2007 13:57

Nicki, did you say you were laid off when your employers found out you were pregnant {shock]

Did you know to dismiss a woman simply for being pregnant is illegal under the Sex Discrimination Act.

Is stage management a high risk job?? If it is, I'm sure they could have found you something less risky to do. I'm very saddened for you really I am.... and quite

Holly29 · 15/03/2007 13:57

Hello Penny! Welcome.

I can't believe how organised you lot are! I haven't bought or thought about anything at all, except for those very cool Nest high chairs that look like something out of a sci fi film (and I won't even need one of those for a while!). Guess I'd better start thinking about some other stuff... damn it.

nh101 · 15/03/2007 13:58

Wow! Thanks for the advice re. nappies - I will deffo be looking into it further (great link too thanks)

Buggies - anyone think it is worth getting one which can fit a toddler in too (even for first baby) - then you don't have to buy another pram when you have your second baby.

Welcome Pennypops! I think this is the new list (how long?!)

Nicki - that is totally awful. I think I remember you posting about this before - you're self employed, right? Your work SUCKS. I will ask my sister if she needs a stage manager. She is an actress and has set up her own theatre company and they are putting on a play (just fringe) this summer. They may well need a stage manager - but it will probs only be Equity rates. Are you interested?

Holly

EnormousChangesAtTheLastMinute · 15/03/2007 14:03

nicki10 if you want advice on your situation there used to be an organisation called 'maternity alliance' which specialised in rights of pregnant women but they folded in late 2005. I have done a google search and this site has info on what replaced them if you want to pursue it...

Hi All,
And welcome on board PENNYPOPS,
Hope everyone is feeling loads better these days.Haven`t posted in days so I thought I would pop by and see what everyone is upto.
Defo getting bigger by the day and there is not much difference in the size of the bump in the mornings now so I think its just gonna get bigger from now on.

Not feeling anything at all yet but expect to feel things alot later with this one than my first as the placenta is alterior also hoping I wont have a back to back problem for delivery too.

Told my family the weekend ,everyone was over the moon.Glad I did it now as my mum said she thought I was putting all the weight back on that I lost before Christmas, funny thing is though I have only put on about 4 lbs!.

I would love to use the reusable nappies this time round.I was going to use them with my first but as he was prem and had to use the tiny disposible ones we just got into the habit of buying the packs and never got round to sorting any of the reusable ones out,so hopefully this time.

Have already discussed pushchairs with DP as I dont know if I will need a doublebuggy like a phil and teds as DS will walk but gets tired quickly but I will leave it until alot nearer the time to see how his walking comes on.

Got 3 playmats, cot mobils 2 bouncy chairs and stuff like that from my first that have had hardly any wear as they grow so fast they dont get to use them so probably wont buy much new stuff like that and they are unisex colours too so will be ok.Not buying a new cot either as DS is going in a bed this year and there is not a mark on his one so will just buy a new matteress.
Having said all that once I start shopping it will probably all change....you know what its like

EdieMcredie · 15/03/2007 16:16

Hi

Don't think it is too early to be thinking about what to buy. We are getting the salisbury nursery package from argos (wardrobe, chest/changing station and cot) for £400. We are also getting a buggy from mamas and papas, can't remember what it is called but it's turqouise and red and can be used from birth onwards. They do a v cute changing bag to match and also foot muff, parasol and rain covers. All in all will be about £200.

Decided today to make our converted attic the nursery as it is painted yellow and is a really lovely light and airy room.

sophus · 15/03/2007 17:08

Today is my first day of not feeling sick, and it feels great. Don't know how long i'll get away with it but i'm enjoying the normality for as long as i can.
I feel as if i've put on loads, but i also know that a good 5lbs is from christmas and also from not exercising due to the MS. Used to running a lot, competing with my horses etc, and for the past three months i've done nothing. So got to get back in the pool and running else i'll be the fattest chubster in town.
Have done a shopping spreadsheet for all the kit, chosen everything, budgeted it all up, etc etc etc. I'm a hideous planner - drives partner bonkers. Won't buy anything for ages though, don't want to tempt fate.

FlossALump · 15/03/2007 18:36

Hi all not posted for ages! I'm feeling much better on the whole. Horrible taste seems to have gone, indegestion better. Still spotty though!

Weight wise I have probably put on around half a stone or so, however, having not weighed myself since around last summer I have no idea really. Put it this way, at the midwifes I was horrified as I weighed too much anyway. So namechange is very apt. I'm going to start going to to aqua natal next week hopefully. Have been fleetingly considering purchasing Davina's video - but it is most likely to be a passing fad and I am probably beyond saving!

I have already brought something A play mat was reduced from 40 to 15 and I couldn't resist. DS's had detachable toys which have gone walkies with us! We've been looking at various bits and pieces and I am getting some idea of the sort of things we'd like. HAve chosen a carrier, but with buggies I am getting seduced by the above our price range types... Either new ideas are needed or else some serious saving is required.

We'll hopefully find out the sex at the 20 week scan although I am already quite convinced I am having a DS2. We've been talking about names a little bit and have so far come up with one girls name we both like. Not agreed on any boys names as yet though.

DS is not impressed by the whole thing. He no longer wants a brother or a sister or a baby at all, unless it brings chocolate - anyone know of any babies which do this?!

Best bit of news is that I have checked my bloods and they are negative to antibodies, meaning we should be able to go ahead and plan a home birth. DP is well on side now so fingers crossed all will go well and we will manage it.

Edie, yes i am still getting crampey pains occaisionally. And a few times I have felt movement type sensations - apparently at this stage they are called quickenings.

TeeCee, you haven't posted for ages. Hope you are feeling better and will post again when you are ready.

Take care eveyone!

Nicki10 · 15/03/2007 18:53

Thank you all for your lovely messages of support. Yes it is according to them a very high risk job, well it is slightly but not that risky and I would nenver put my baby at risk anyway.

They did lay me off because I was pregnant and told me this was the reason! So I rang my union Equity and according to them they are within the rights to do this .

Holly I would be very interested in any SM work let me know if you here anything.
Thank you so much Enormouschangesatthelastminute I will email them and see what my rights are.

Have a good evening everyone

xxx

nh101 · 15/03/2007 19:25

Hi Nicki - I remember you posting before about your job - bummer. I was wondering if you knew about SMP if you're not working. I am not sure but I don't think you are entitled to it unless you have worked for a certain number of weeks leading up to the birth.

If you don't do enough you may only be entitled to Income Support after the baby's born.

I am not completely sure about this but my sis just had a baby and she worked on ferries beforehand, but stopped about 6 weeks into her pregnancy cos of bleeding. She had to work at Wilkinson's on the checkout to give herself something to do and to build up her entitlement to SMP.

Might be worth Googling or going to Citizens Advice.

LoopyLouLisa · 15/03/2007 20:03

Hi Nicky,

Please don't get too upset. There is loads of help out there if you're not working while you're pregnant.

I was made redundant two months before I got pg with ds. Just after that bfp I left my violent ex and moved into a shared house. I could only sign a 6 month agreement as pg so towards the end the local council lent me enough money for deposit/1st month rent on a private house. i also received housing benefit while pg. also, 3 months before I was entitled to a sure start maternity grant to buy buggy/cot/etc. most benefits are subject to your patner's income too (if you have one) but you can still get some, like contributuon-based job-seekers'. ironically enough, the job i was made redundant from was in local government advising the public on exactly this sort of thing.

as you are not working, you may also be entitled to legal aid so it may be worth consulting an independent solicitor re unfair dismissal. if you are a union member your membership fee may entitle you to some benefits during maternity too.

Good luck and please excuse me for rambling on!

Lisa xx

Hello everyone, My last night shift tonight!! woohoooo!!!! I'm so happy, I'm going to my boss the first thing next week and asking to come off nights. This week has killed me!

It's interesting reading all the stuff about reusable nappies. I really do try to be environmentally friendly, using Ecover products, turning all the electrical equipment off etc, I'm not sure about the reusable nappies though. I'll have to do some research. My sister has been using Greenbaby ones for her two girls. I know they still use up landfill, but they're made from natural products so I figure at least they won't take a million years to biodegrade.

I remember reading your post Nicki about losing your job. I'm sorry you're in this situation. Are you only a member of Equity or are you a member of Bectu as well? They should be able to offer some advice, I'm sure you can claim compensation for being fired for being pregnant. I hope it all works out for the best for you.

I haven't bought anything or even browsed. I'm such a neurotic fool I'm terrified of doing anything like that until I feel a bit more secure in this pregnancy. I'm 13+1 now, and I have no idea at what point I can totally relax, never I guess, but I'm so terrified something might go wrong, I don't want to tempt fate. My sister has got lots of things she's going to pass on to me, a moses basket, pushchair (if I want it) clothes. My mum has offered to buy me a cot as a present. The rest I'll think about later, apart from anything, I'm such a selfish mummy, I keep looking at things for me, nice maternity clothes and such like!!

I gave myself a bit of a fright in bed today. I twisted my body to turn over in bed, and I felt a really sharp pain in my abdomen. It felt a bit like a pulled muscle, it's not really hurting now, but I can feel a twinge. I was terrified I'd squashed the baby as I turned and done something to it (I told you I was neurotic!) I hope it is just a pulled muscle.

Honey - my neice, although not upset I'm having a baby, has told me in no uncertain terms I have to have a girl. I said what if it's a boy and she just screwed up her face and made a puking noise. Nice! (and she's only 4!)

My morning sickness has retreated to just the odd heave every now and then. It's quite horrible because my whole stomach gives a lurch as though I'm about to throw. It's usually when I haven't eaten for a few hours so I'm eating almost every two hours now!

I have what I think might be a little bump, but I'm not sure how much is fat!! I can prod it a bit too much iyswim, I thought if it was a baby bump it would be a bit firmer.

One last thing to round off my ramblings.... does anyone know when 2nd trimester officially starts? Is it at the start of week 14 or at the end (ie the start of week 15?) I've felt so rotten the past 8 weeks, and I know that I won't suddenly feel fabulous when I get in to my second trimester, but I just need that psychological barrier. I think it'll help me relax a bit more.

I hope everyone has a lovely day xx

trinity1 · 16/03/2007 07:44

Hello everyone, felt littleone fluttering about for the first time last night so am walking about with a big smile on my face this morning! My DD is 9 months old today too - am starting to wonder how DP and I are going to cope with 2 under 2 once baby comes along. DD will only be just over 14 months old by then xxx

Nettee · 16/03/2007 07:45

MrsMar - the second trimester starts when you reach week 12 (ie 12 weeks after LMP) but lots of people don't feel well until 14 - 16 weeks. Sorry that doesn't really help you with your psychological barrier. I am hoping for a miracle cure on Monday when I reach 14 weeks but who knows.....

honey2theb · 16/03/2007 09:53

Im 15 +3 ( ooh i love typing that ) and im actually starting to feel good! and i have slept constantly for about 12 weeks so hopefully i'll have a few weeks of feeling fine!! hehe!!

Starting to get really excited about my bubba now but still nervous. cant wait to start buying things, and i really cant wait for my big bump!! am i just strange? my belly is def getting firmer.

hope your all feeling good today! ( or better at least)
