Due to recent sad news and at the suggestion of others, I have started this new thread. Let's hear everyone's news.......

Jemima and PLP: thanks re advice about tuna. I have been overindulging in it lately, more than one or two cans a week. I'm going to try to go 'cold turkey'.

Anyone else with cravings? Apart from tuna I'm quite partial to salt and vinegar crisps, but that's about all. I did ask dh if I had a sudden craving for something at 3 o'clock one morning, would he go to the 24 hour supermarket for me. He said he would, but I'm not sure I believe him. A really naughty streak in me is tempted to try it, even though I'd be putting it on, just to see if he'd go! Would that be really wrong of me?!? Or is it a perfectly legitimate test of how much he'd do for me while I'm carrying his baby?!

Nettee · 28/03/2007 11:21

oooh Kinki that would be naughty, but if you think he might I would say you are quite lucky. I know that DH wouldn't.. but then he likes his sleep too much

Edie I am totally thinking about maternity leave and counting down the weeks. only 21 now - hmm still seems alot better to count the months 4 1/2 - doesn't seem so much. Have got a meeting with my manager about it tomorrow.

my dog has chewed DS's shoe that I only got two weeks ago and now I have to go into town and get an identical pair for another £26. Who would have dogs, especially puppies - when is it they grow out of chewing?

good luck with your cats Laksa

Hello, re the tuna, it's all fish eating fish that you're menat to go easy on - so tuna, swordfish, mackeral, shark. Because when they eat teh littler fish, they absorb their mercury (in teh sea) and get higher concentrations than other fish. But you're allowed 2 portions a week, and salmon and trout are always good as they have those omega oils in them. I'm seriously craving sushi, the vege version is good, but not the same at all.. I wasn't aware about the shellfish, I was happily chomping away on prawn curry, thinking that it was a yummy way to boost my iodine levels (I have a crap thyroid). So can I still eat cooked prawns?? I'd have serious cravings for picked onion Monster Munch, if I didn't live abroad, where the only damn crisp flavours are plain salted, bolognese and paprika. Urgh. Oh, and of course icecream, but since that's so nice anyway, I'm not sure if it counts as a pregnancy craving, or me just being my usual greedy self..

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 13:52

Afternoon all, I've been trying to shop for maternity bras this morning - yuk. Debenhams had none, tried Mothercare ones and they just seemed to spread my boobs out to the sides, horrible. Where have you guys been shopping?

I'm feeling sad because my DH has to go to Finland when I have my 20 week scan, I've phoned the hospital and they are fully booked so can't change my appointment. I might be overreacting but he didn't seem too bothered to be missing it which is upsetting me . He came with me to the 20 week scans for DS1 and DS2.

Holly29 · 28/03/2007 14:18

Hi Hope

I really like the ones on Blossom Mother and Child (you can google it). They are properly nice, if a bit pricey. I haven't bought any yet because I started with tiny boobs and haven't yet gotten big enough to fit into a maternity bra, which seem to start at 34C.
Hope this helps.

I totally understand re: DH and scans. I would be upset - not that I have a date for mine yet (only 14 weeks tomorrow!).

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 14:32

Thanks for that Holly. My 20 wk scan is on 9th May, so it's a little bit away yet. I can't believe it, he hardly ever goes away, and it's sod's law it would have to clash with my scan date - BUGGER!

Holly29 · 28/03/2007 14:45

That's really annoying, I totally understand. Is there any way you guys could maybe pay for one private scan? I know they're quite expensive but if he's away for work, then maybe he can pay for it?

I do understand, honest.

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 14:56

Oh Holly, I wish I could see you and get a hug!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great minds think alike, I've been looking online and trying to find somewhere. Think if I maybe had a scan the week before with DH then I wouldn't be so nervous about going on my own.... IYSWIM. He's just phoned and he said he's really sorry he didn't sound bothered, he is, it's just he knows it can't be helped. So of course I'm being typical female and feeling all guilty now for being sulky on the phone

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 14:57

PS I also had a bit of a tantrum earlier and ordered a doppler from ebay (hired one)!!

Holly29 · 28/03/2007 15:45

I would totally try to find somewhere if I were you. I know the chances are tiny of anything being actually wrong, but what if they tell you something you weren't expecting or you need to make a decision on or something? It is not really fair to be on your own... I'd go for a private one the week before or something, definitely. I was going to recommend the Fetal Medicine Centre in London but you're in Northants/Oxfordsh I see.

Don't feel bad about being sulky! I had to ring my DH at work today and rant at him for 10 minutes about my Mum (who is being a total pain at the moment) and then I felt all guilty at being ranty but it's just the pg hormones! That will excuse anything!

Doppler is so exciting! I have so far not succumbed because I know I'd get obsessive and be unable to concentrate on anything else. It would be bad for me...

Big hugs back.

laksa · 28/03/2007 16:30

Sorry your dh won't be there HWBB, I know how you feel. I have had to reschedule all my scans so far around dh who managed to be abroad for both original dates You should def go for a private scan like one of those 4d ones, think they are about £100-150?

They always seem to go away at crucial times. Mine had his last trip abroad (total of 8 this year!) scheduled for the middle of sept...Does he think babies come to a timetable. I was not amused and knocked that one on the head at least...

Luxmum, you can eat cooked prawns, I am.

Edie, wish I could take you up on the offer. You would be driven mental though. I have 2 oriental type cats (egyptian mau and tonkinese) and they constantly talk at you. My tonk is especially mad, if you sneeze, she will complain at you and chatter till you stop

Kinki, I think you should 'test' dh, I have sent mine on loads of errands so far...but not in the middle of the night yet.

Well I have found a cattery but not sure if I trust it so am going to visit on the weekend.

Hope everyone is well,

xx.

laksa · 28/03/2007 16:35

oh, just a thought HWBB, but my scan was referred to by the midwife as a 23 week one...which implies that you can have it at 20 weeks or 23, do you think they would be able to change the date to 23 weeks??

was that clear or am i just rambling

fff45 · 28/03/2007 16:40

hi everyone,

been a bit swamped at work so am just catching up on news today!

re dp/dh not attending scans: I was gutted when my dp didn't come to a midwife appointment to hear the heartbeat, so it would be dreadful if he can't make my 20-wk scan!

I'm also curious about the cravings - I've been baking sweets like crazy! but also wanting spicy and garlicy food a lot. Results: one very definite bump

on the cheese issue: i was chatting at work the other day about what you can and can't eat during pregnancy, and one woman said she had a friend from France who ate all sorts of cheeses constantly - because it France they wouldn't dare tell you not to eat one of the country's staples! So I reason, perhaps best to buy French soft cheeses, rather than English ones? But I'd go with the baked brie business just to make sure

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 17:25

Hi Laksa, I phoned both the hospital I'm booked into and a hospital in Oxford, both are completely booked up for several weeks either side of my appointment.

I haven't mentioned wanting to book a private scan to my DH yet, think he's still recovering from the £140 Nuchal scan. Bit awkward also because at 9 weeks I had some spotting and the NHS hospital couldn't scan me so I drove straight to a private hospital, and that consultant is trying to invoice me £120 for a 5 minute job!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He also added 6 days to my due date, incorrectly I might add. I'm querying this bill, he still hasn't got back to me, I queried it about a month ago! So with all it's cost so far I'm a bit worried about how he'll react tbh . But then the good news is, a refund for some tuition fees (very long story) I've been chasing since December has finally been agreed and I'll be receiving a cheque for £200 - that should in theory soften the blow??

I'm glad I'm not alone in my thinking, thought I was maybe overreacting.

laksa · 28/03/2007 17:49

just went to the loo and its happened again its pink tinged mucus? Tried called the EPDU but nooone answered, do I go to A and E, I'm not actually bleeding as such. Could someone advise? My doctors are also closed now.

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 17:58

Oh Laksa, poor you. I don't know what they could do at A&E at this time of the evening though, it seems common practice to refer women to the EPU on these occasions, wouldn't want you to end up sitting in a cubicle for 3 hours and just being sent home Do you have an out of hours doc? What about your midwife, has she given you an emergency contact number? Failing that, there's NHS Direct. Have you been overdoing it today? 'Try' not to panic, it could be coming from a cervical erosion or something. Def try and make some phone calls just to get some advice. Let us know how you get on.

PS Do what you need to do, if that means going straight to A&E then do it. Good luck Laksa x x

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 17:59

Have you tried ringing your doctors? Our doctors leave an answer phone message for out of hours contact numbers.

Holly29 · 28/03/2007 18:29

Laksa

I would go to A+E if you are at all worried but the problem is that they are really slow and you may have to wait some time and if the EPU is shut until Monday they may not be able to scan you... I would go though. You just never know. Typical this happens on a Friday afternoon!

It makes me so annoyed, in France you'd ring an emergency doctor and they'd come out to see you (albeit you'd pay for it) but here you only get to ring someone on NHS Direct who will undoubtedly just say Go to A+E! Urgh....

Good luck. xx

laksa · 28/03/2007 19:55

well I managed to get to see a doctor and they said it is probably ok since I'm not bleeding. The doc said he'd ring the hospital and book me a scan (couldn't I have done that myself tomorrow) and then he will ring me to let me know when it is for. He said I might not be able to get one till monday or there might be a gap for one tomorrow.

I asked him if he could listen to the heartbeat to set my mind at rest. He did and said it was hard to get a constant sound. He then tried again and took my pulse to check he wasn't hearing my beat (didn't understand the confusion) by accident and said the beat was definitely too fast to be mine...so I guess I heard the baby's heartbeat

Sorry think I am rambling. Will let you know how the scan goes. Am probably overreacting but I feel really crampy at the moment so am worried

Thanks for listening guys xx.

sophus · 28/03/2007 20:25

Laksa good luck, i hope it's all okay, sure it will be. Make sure you get as much rest as possible - good excuse for an early night.
I'm miserable as sin today - no reason for it just got the glums.
Went late night shopping to look for maternity clothes and got really depressed. Didn't like anything and really resent having to spend money just so i can look fat, so i didn't get a thing.
Partner is in US for two weeks and i miss him in an irrational hormonal pregnant way.
Grumble over.
x

Hopeitwontbebig · 28/03/2007 20:59

Hi Laksa, I'm glad you got to see a doctor and heard the heartbeat, that's reassuring isn't it. Have you had these crampy feelings before. Cramps can be very common in pregnancy, do you think you're being hyperaware of your body at the moment? Completely understandable of course. I really hope you get your scan tomorrow. Hold on to the fact that the heartbeat was heard. Good luck tomorrow. x

Nicki10 · 28/03/2007 21:02

Laska I think you are living in SE london.

Tomorrow morning at 08:30 you should go to Kings College hospital. You need to go to the third floor and I think it's ward 8, turn left outside the main elevators. I think you are booked into Farnborough but they are useless and too small.

Kings is absolutely fine with self referal and they will always see worried mothers that day. You need to get there early and you may have to wait for a couple of hours but they will defineatly see you.

I have done this myself at Kings 4 times because Farnborough could never see me for a couple of days. They are brilliant and don't care which hospital you are booking at. If you can't go in the morning they do scan up until 17:00 but they have to do rounds in the afternoons.

I know how worrying this is and I will be thinking of you, keep us posted. [simle]

kinki · 28/03/2007 23:34

I'm thinking of you too Laska. Hope you get your scan and the reassurance you need. Keep strong.

EdieMcredie · 29/03/2007 08:57

Laska

I am still getting period type cramps, sometimes quite painful but they seem to coincide with my tummy getting a bit bigger! Follow Nicki's advice and good luck. Let us know, we are all behind you love xxxxxxxx

Hopeitwontbebig · 29/03/2007 09:32

Any news on your scan Laksa, how are you this morning? x x
