Due to recent sad news and at the suggestion of others, I have started this new thread. Let's hear everyone's news.......

Morning All

I'm glad your well Laska.

I know what you mean about the food thing I am absolutely craving sloppy Brie. To the extent that I even went to the covent garden cheese shop yesterday to ask the expert if there is any brie that is safe for pregnant women. When she told me no because of the risk of listeria I said I know but I want Brie a little to sharply, the woman next to me looked horrified I was very and said sorry but it's the only thing I fancy. The other thing I can't get enough of is wagamamas and DP thinks we should get a baby grow that says grown in wagamamas !

Laska I am not having a homebirth but my friend runs a birthing pool business and she recommends that women hire it 3 weeks before due date as the hire length is 4/5 weeks.

laksa · 27/03/2007 11:33

Nicki, thanks for that info, was thinking of hiring for 2 weeks before due date and 2 weeks after so that seems about right. Don't think our hot water system will be able to keep up so was going to get a self heating pool...but wow they are expensive, the ones I've looked at are about £310 to hire for a month

You know you could indulge your brie craving by heating the brie to 160 degrees and eating it like a fondue, would that satisfy it?

xx

fio fio, a stone!

canadianmum · 27/03/2007 12:06

nicki, funny you mention wagamamas. Before pregnancy it was my favourite place to go for a quick lunch and I craved it regularly. Since pregnancy I have gone off it, everything tastes really different - weird!

My main cravings are salt and vinegar crisps, salty chips, tinned peaches (!) with plain yogurt. And I NEVER eat tinned fruit normally.

I think my belly popped at 14 weeks but I am a second timer, first time wasn't until 17 or 18 weeks (and that was twins ).

OP posts:
Nicki10 · 27/03/2007 12:28

Wow Laska that is fantastic news I didn't know I could do that. I always enjoy brie more when it is left to melt for a while so that's sounds fantastic. That's what I'm having for dinner. Melted Brie and French Stick mMmmm.

Fio Fio a stone that's incredible is it through morning sickness?

I just look fat at the moment. I can't wait to get a real bump so people don't just think I've eaten all the pies!

honey2theb · 27/03/2007 12:41

Having a HORRIBLE day really really bad. Work is really getting me down. had to tell my boss about pregnancy because i work in a heavy industrial factory office and he wanted me to go out into the factory! when i told him he said ' oh its only a few steps!' the cheek! if i need steel toe caps and a hard hat surely its dangerous!
Things are going bad in work. i wish i could quit but we so need the money!! Now i feel ive told everyone in work too soon and im jinxing myself!

on the brighter side i just came home for lunch and used my doppler! baby is playing away nicely! Its getting a lot easier to find the heartbeat now too.
Sorry for whinging, but i really needed it!

Honey xx 17 weeks!

Hopeitwontbebig · 27/03/2007 13:02

Honey, so sorry you're having a horrible day. Sending you a ((((((((hug)))))))). Hope it gets better!

Laksa that is good news about Brie. Does the same apply to Camembert??

FilBrit · 27/03/2007 13:41

Hi Everyone!

Honey - I'm so sorry about your work, your boss sounds mean! have you asked him to do a risk assessment (can you tell I work in HR ?! ) you have the right to have one and not to work in areas where you may be exposed to risk, and that can include v noisy machinery...

I'm really craving Raspberries and Tuna right now (thankfully not together!) - but is it right you can only have tuna once a week because of the mercury? However since Nikci10 mentioned wagamamas now I want their food!

Laksa - I'm English but my Husband is Filipino, but I've been lucky enough to visit there quite a few times and am gradually learning how to speak Filipino - although everyone laughs at my "silly English accent"!

Hope you're all having a nice Tuesday...

laksa · 27/03/2007 13:45

sorry you're having a bad honey, but at least you're having fun with your doppler

HWBB, you can do the same with camambert. Listeria is a bacterium which thrives when chilled and can be present in soft (mold ripened) cheese but if you heat it to above 160 degrees the bacteria cannot survive. Not sure I would trust a restaurant to do this. I am dying to have a brie tart from cafe rouge but don't trust them to have heated the brie through thoroughly enough so have decided not to risk it. If you do it at home and test the temp then it should be fine.

xx

Luxmum · 27/03/2007 14:33

Hello,
I have written messages before, but my posts didn't save, so this is my first for the Sept thread. Firstly, I hope you're all doing well, and the little Bumps are happy and safe. I went for my scan last week, and it was 8cm long, kicking and waving on the ultrasound, which was lovely to see. I'm quite big already, and desperately searching for NICE flattering maternity wear, but that's another story... I eat brie on an almost daily basis, and have suuuch cravings for mozzerella - surely if it's pasturised, it's ok?? I eat the President camembert brand, it's not the same as the lovely stinky 'proper' cheeses, but it helps.. The proper cheese shops like those in Covent Garden wont stock such travesties as pasturised cheeses, but your Tescos will.
I wanted your opinions on something. For my first baby, my practical, lovely husband didn't get me a present , and I know some women are lucky enough to receive gifts from their DH/DPs. So this time, I thought I'd save up a bit for each of the 9 month and buy myself something nice - ie a eternity ring with the stone of my babies sex (which i don't know yet). It's going to cost about 500 euros, and I know that the (very sensible) opinion of my DH last time, was that the money could be better spent getting things for the baby - prams and stuff. This time round, we've a house to renovate. So, am I being selfish, and should to money be spent on the house, OR damn it all, I'm carrying this thing for MONTHS and it's made me sick as a dog for ages, and don't I deserve something nice??
I'd appreciate your opinions, as you can guess, you know what I want, but am not sure if I'm being unreasonable, or not. Unfort, my friends got loads of expensive gifts from their DHs (who earn more than my DH, and I think to be honest my friends deserve weekly diamonds for being married to the blokes, but that's different..) So... can you help me?

thanks

Nicki10 · 27/03/2007 14:38

Hi Luxman

Welcome to the thread. You can have fresh mozzerella it's one of the cheeses your allowed according to the midwife.

According to the midwife and cheese expert in covent garden it doesn't make any difference whether the cheese is pasturised or not as blue veined cheese and mould ripened cheese breed listeria. It is how they are made and actually nothing to do with whether they were pasturised which I didn't realise until yesterday so be careful with that. I think our best bet is to heat it to 160 like Laska suggested.

laksa · 27/03/2007 14:49

Talking of cheese. remember reading this from a fellowmumsnetter a month ago:

'On the subject of cheese....I used to work in a cheese shop selling mostly unpasteurised farmhouse cheeses and our advice to customers (based on the boss's wife's research..she was a was a nurse) was it's not a case of pasteurised v. unpasteurised, but rather soft v hard cheeses. Unpasteurised hard cheeses (like cheddar and parmesan) are perfectly OK cos the milk is cooked as part of the process which kills off any harmful bacteria. Soft, mould ripened cheeses like brie and camembert and blues should be avoided whether pasteurised or not as the mould ripening process can harbour harmful bacteria like listeria, but mozarella is OK as long as its pasteurised as it isn't mould ripened. Sheep and goat's milk should also be avoided whether pasteurised or not as they carry toxoplasmosis which can get into the milk. Hope I haven't worried anyone unduly, but the misinformation out there used to be one of our bug-bears in the shop. Mind you, I'm sure several million french women would disagree about what is and isn't safe....but I personally wouldn't take the risk. Sorry...didn't mean to preach but this is an issue that I feel quite strongly about.'

Does that help anyone, or have I just scared you...

laksa · 27/03/2007 14:51

oops just crossed posts nicki, you said it alot quicker than I did

Great re cheese, def gonna have some camembert and cook it and dip-yum.

Luxmum, I'd say go for it!! I got a beautiful eternity ring from my DH on my 30th birthday, but I had to ask for it!! We bought it from this website. The diamonds were really good quality (I used to work in a jewellery shop, that's where I met my DH, he was my assistant Manager!), 4 c's and all that!!! Might be worth a look.

sophus · 27/03/2007 15:59

hi all
you started talking about headaches, so i got a headache - just like following the crowd.
Anybody else terribly dehydrated? I am drinking water non-stop and i still need more. Eveyr part of me is dry - skin, eyes, insides.
Been a bit grumpy of late but hard to stay grumpy when it's such glorious sunshine.
Luxmum - buy yourself something lovely. my mother was given a beautiful piece of jewellery when each of us were born and she in turn will leave us in her will what she was given on our births.
I had a podgy bump which was definitely chocolate related and now it has gone hard and officailyl bump like - i am 17 weeks tomorrow.

Hello,

Glad you are better Laksa. I'm now 16 weeks and not showing at all during the day, but by evening time I seem to develop a bump. Must just be fat or wind!!

With regard to what you are meant to eat and not eat, I've been very bad. I drink about 2 glasses of beer/wine a week and I have tried to cut out soft cheese, although last week I did eat a piece of brie. I also made a prawn curry without even realising I'm not meant to eat shellfish, until a friend reminded me.

This is going to sound really bad, but I do sometimes forget that I am pregnant. I was putting something high up on the wall at work yesterday and climbed up some ladders. After about 10 minutes, I realised that perhaps I shouldn't be doing that in my condition! I have had a risk assessment - I'm a teacher, but it would help if I remembered I am pregnant!!

TeeCee · 27/03/2007 16:03

Hi all.
Feeling remarkablY well here.
Just having loadsa grief trying to get a home birth organised, nothings ever easy aye.
I'm eating crap food really, I just so can't be arsed to grill fish and steam veg. DP made homemade pizzas last night but I refused salad and made him make mne chips instead! And tonight I really fancy homemed beefburgers, chips and beans! So not like me!

Luxmum · 27/03/2007 16:16

Ohhhhhh Hopeitwontbebig, what a GENIUS idea - it's my 30th BDay about a month after I have this one, so what a great combo pressie, now I can put the pressure on DH!
Am really miffed about the cheese threads, have to say I was enjoying my brie and feeling very smug about it all, and now I can't have it!! (Unless I cook it), and I forgot how divine melted Mont Dor is, so I'm going to buy some tonight and eat it with a clean consience. Just a shame really, as I love cheese soooo much, especially the smelly gooey French ones. Sigh, only another what, 6 months of it to go.. All i crave now is blue cheese and rare steaks and carpaccio, which I love, but not to this overpowering extent. How on earth do women on permanent diets manage it? It must drive them up the wall, thinking about forbidden foods all day.. My utmost sympathy to anyone who has been in that situation..

EdieMcredie · 27/03/2007 16:41

Fio

Because I want to know about your work?

laksa · 27/03/2007 16:48

emalushka, I am eating shellfish, just not raw, its ok as long as you cook it

Hi teecee, how come so much trouble with the homebirth (sorry if you've said so before) I am just like you, am eating very lardy food which is unlike me...at least your burgers are homemade. I woke up on sunday morning and my dh asked me what I wanted for breakfast and I replied 'protein'...I made him go to Macd's for a sausage n egg mcmuffin. My baby is made up entirely of fastfood!

Luxmum, I told my dh I wanted an eternity ring for the birth of my first child but this was when I envisaged it happening when we were financially better off. Can't justify spending money on it when we need to decorate the whole house, kitchen and bathroom as well I say go for it if you can afford it though.

xx

Nettee · 27/03/2007 17:17

Hello everyone, a busy day in here... love the idea of an eternity ring for a baby. I didn't get one with DS but then got one for the following Christmas .

I am loving the weather today. Have put on one of my summery maternity outfits and it makes me look about 6 months gone - makes me smile, I love having a bump.

I have been quite naughty with food this time round - should know better being a midwife - I must admit I thought that pasturised brie would be ok - must stop eating that. Haven't fancied alcohol at all though so no problems there.

EdieMcredie · 27/03/2007 17:39

Just been back to GP about rib pain and he has referred me to pregnancy physio.

Also listened to baby's HB which sounded brilliant

He commented on my large bump

I look as though im due...
