Plus size pregnancy

Hi everyone. I'm 5w5d and currently a size 20. When we decided to start trying I expected it to take at least 6 months....we fell pregnant straight away - first time we tried. Hubby is now congratulating his 'super sperm' on a daily basis (I had nothing to do with it obvs!😂

I've tried to find a thread for plus size pregnancies and can't find one so thought I'd start one up

I really hope I get a nice bump and don't just look and feel fatter x

@lifechanginglemoncake very true, we are where we are. I had visions of myself eating so healthy by now but food aversions and morning sickness have meant sometimes I just have to eat what I can.

Also dc #1 here. I haven't thought that far ahead in terms of actually having a baby! I found my symptoms come and go as well. Although 13 weeks here and still being sick xx

Jodieem · 26/01/2019 17:10

Hi, im so pleased I've found this thread! I stumbled across it after googling pregnancy weight gain in the thighs and it resulting in me feeling miserable reading about expected weight gains. I'm 25 weeks with a bmi over 40 I'm short and was disappointed to find out I'm actually 2inches shorter than I've always thought I was so bmi was a bit of a surprise! I found it hard at first being referred to consultant led as I was expecting to be judged and told off about my weight but I havnt been weighed in hospital since 12 weeks! Got my gtt on Monday praying I don't have it but it runs in my family and I have pcos so my risk factors are high! Thanks for the links @lifechanginglemoncake I'll be checking them out!

Daisy2990 · 30/01/2019 14:24

I am also consultant led for being 40.5 on the BMI scale.. like the above poster, they measured me as being a bit shorter than previously and this tipped me over the edge.

I was absolutely FRANTIC with worry about this until about 20 weeks, thinking I would be sent off for re-education and group dieting sessions. I'm vegetarian so my diet is not that bad. At 12 weeks I got a ream of weird questions ("Have you ever tried eating healthily? Do you think you could cut back on pasta sauce?"... eh??). Nothing since.

I'm at week 33 now and have gained about 9kg. More than I hoped for, but honestly, nobody has batted an eyelid.

What has annoyed me is that all attention has been on BMI, and the apparently near-certainty I'd have GD, when, in parallel, everyone has missed the fact I was horrendously and severely anaemic for months.

I don't care so much when they weigh me now I'm close to the end. I eat reasonably without calorie counting, I don't stuff myself with cake. I'm not sure what else they would want me to do.

Daisy2990 · 30/01/2019 14:28

@lifechanginglemoncake

I also have a family history of DVT.
First pregnancy this was apparently missed. This pregnancy I was put on blood thinning daily injections from 17 weeks until 6 weeks after birth.

In my PCT if you have 3+ risk factors you get put on injections more or less immediately. They are things like... BMI, close relative having a spontaneous blood clot, etc. (I was vaping zero nicotine very early in pregnancy so they put me down a smoker which I thought was a bit unfair, but hey ho. That counted against me.)

Anyway it might be worth checking this has been picked up, the injections are not that bad really & better safe than sorry.

Whowouldhavethoughtit · 31/01/2019 14:48

I'm so happy to see this thread running again!
I'm only 4 weeks pregnant and a size 22 (though very tall) and already the plus size fear has set in. I'm worried about what the Dr is going to say next week but I'm probably over thinking it. More than anything I'm wondering how well a scan can be through my big belly and if I can find a plus size bump band 😂
@daisy2990 I was debating going on to 0% nicotine but is that not good?

IcyToes · 05/02/2019 12:15

I'm delighted to see this thread! 6+5(ish) and a size 18-20 but I'm only 5ft2 and weigh a whopping 30lbs more than at the start of my last pregnancy. I'm really scared about it as I was consultant led for my weight then.

dreaminofholidays · 06/02/2019 20:47

hello, nice to see this thread getting some action. 😊

I'm 25+5 today, I've got my GD test on Monday. Dreading it. It sounds so boring just sitting their for 2 hours. Need to find a good book to read.

How is everyone feeling?

How often do they weigh us? xxx

Whowouldhavethoughtit · 06/02/2019 20:48

Hi @IcyToes!

Congratulations. I'm 5 weeks so not far behind.
We're you consultant led purely because of your weight?
I've called the Drs and been told to wait and see the midwife at 10 weeks. This is my first so I'm pretty nervous and really want to see someone now!

clairemarie2702 · 11/02/2019 23:42

Glad to have found this thread. I’m 10-11 weeks and a size 20, BMI over 40 and a blood clotting condition so my care will be consultant led.
I’ve already had a few scans due to intermittent bleeding and all have been ok. Since 9 weeks they’ve been able to pick up baby and heartbeat through a tummy scan so that’s more comfortable.

Official dating scan is next week so hopefully we will get a decent pic x

Willacybaby19 · 12/02/2019 17:59

Helloo..
I'm 16w+7 today and a size 18. I'm forever looking at my stomach thinking is that baby or just fat?! I've been told I'm going to be consultant led also and that I will need to be GD tested.
I'm quite disappointed with how I've been treated by my midwife as she prescribed aspirin at a too high dose and didn't explain what it was for. It was only after speaking to the pharmacist that he explained for pre-eclampsia.. But I've not history of high blood pressure or any previous medical issues. I have a my 2nd MW app on Thursday so I want some answers for sure!
Hope everyone is doing ok!

Whowouldhavethoughtit · 13/02/2019 13:51

I'm 6 weeks and still waiting to hear from the midwife. I'm hoping I'll hear soon. We are debating going to get a private scan done just for peace of mind.
@Willacybaby19 that doesn't sound very nice. You will have to let us know what happens.
I carry a lot of my weight on my tummy so at first I was nervous but now I just think I can hide it for longer 😂 there is a plus size pregnancy Instagram page if any of you are on there?

Willacybaby19 · 13/02/2019 22:48

@Whowouldhavethoughtit I was close to 11 weeks before I had a midwife call and I was 12 weeks when I finally saw her.. I duno this is my first pregnancy and I just haven't had the positive experience from midwife apps yet. We had a pirivate scan at 6 weeks and it was so nice to see the heartbeat!
I've got my 16 week app tomorrow (I'm actually 17 weeks now!) so I shall let you know how I get on!
I've been looking on so many insta pages and different pregnancy apps but the only one I really like is baby centre.
How you doing? Any symptoms yet?

clairemarie2702 · 18/02/2019 12:13

Well Ladies, following some recommendations from this thread, I’ve just received my first few maternity items.

ASDA - lovely soft material and very affordable. Look a little on the large side, I’m a 20-22 Pre-pregnancy and went for 22, I’d advise to go for the smaller of the 2 if you’re in between sizes like me.
Simply Be - some nice cotton underwear, reasonably priced.

Whowouldhavethoughtit · 20/02/2019 10:21

Hey @Willacybaby19

How did you appointment go? Sorry for the late reply I'm terrible at checking 🙈
We have booked a private scan next Monday and we'll be 7 weeks 6 days.
My symptoms have been really up at down. Some days I've felt sicky the second I wake up and cramps. Other days I have nothing at all. The main thing that has been consistent is tiredness! I'm absolutely shattered.

@clairemarie2720 I had a look at adsa stuff and it looks lovely. I work with a very petite lady who is pregnant and she has been getting bits from there too and she said they are great quality. Did you have your scan yet?

Willacybaby19 · 20/02/2019 14:14

Dont worry about it @WhowouldhavethoughtitGrin I was the same person constantly tired, would nap for nearly 3 hours in the day and then go to bed for 10ish and wake up at 7!
The appointment went so goood! It was a different mw cause the one I'd be assigned to was on holiday and bloody hell she was a breath of fresh air! She said all my booking app tests came out back negative and perfect. My iron levels were brilliant and my blood pressure is absolutely fine. She doesn't know why I was given 150 mg of aspirin as I've never had any previous medical history and its my first pregnancy. She said yes my bmi is hight but she could tell by looking at me I was healthy. I honestly could have told her I loved her then and there Grin
Safe to say, we've switched midwifes and now go to her at a different clinic!

Ive just bought some asda maternity clothes, waiting on delivery as I write this! I'll you you know how I get on!

Lavellan · 22/02/2019 23:29

Hey y'all. I'm 11 weeks in and bmi 36 at booking in. Was a bit of a shock to see "high risk" in my notes since I feel healthy and all my tests were good. Now that my nausea has passed I've stopped the white bread and trying to cut down sugar as a precaution. I was getting fed up of plain carbs anyway! Before getting preg I was doing a lot of high impact exercise which I've had to stop, still need to find something to fill that gap with. Hoping to get some pregnancy yoga in at some point, even though I am hilariously bad at yoga! Grin

clairemarie2702 · 23/02/2019 02:40

Hi @Whowouldhavethoughtit
My dating scan was today and our due date is confirmed as 3rd September and I’m now 12+4 weeks.
We saw the baby wriggling around a lot and appearing to have hiccups which was nice. The scan picswerent very clear though unfortunately, maybe because baby was moving so much!

Willacybaby19 · 23/02/2019 16:00

Hey Ladies!! I for one have been loving this little boost of February sun! Because I know when summer does come around and I'll be 7/8/9 months preggers, I won't be happy!

My maternity clothes from Asda arrived, everything fits perfectly except, 2 pairs of smart trousers that even with a bump and extra fat will still fall down! but other than that the work dresses and tops make me feel so comfortable!

I hear ya @Lavellan, it was a shock to me too but with the new midwife I haven't felt "fat" since that appointment. Don't let it get to ya, enjoy yourself whilst you can. I'm loving my new shape. So much more confident and proud!

Isn't it just amazing to see the baby @clairemarie2702, my pics weren't clear either but hey ho. Wait till you go for the 16 week midwife app and she lets you listen to babys heart.. that will take your breath away!

Hope everyones keeping well!

clairemarie2702 · 23/02/2019 16:56

@Willacybaby19 it certainly is.

I’m a bit funny with fabrics so was relieved that the ASDA clothes feel like cotton.
I’m thinking of getting a private scan at 16 weeks as I don’t think I can wait 8 more weeks for a better pic lol

Whowouldhavethoughtit · 25/02/2019 16:42

So Asda is going to have to be my go to for maternity clothes then. I'm dreading summer, I plan on living in maxi dresses, flip flops and chub rub leggings!
We went for our private scan today, little bean is measuring perfectly and has a nice story little heart beat. I definitely feel a lot more relaxed about it all.
Have any of you seen any bump bands suitable for plus size or have you used any yourself?

Willacybaby19 · 28/02/2019 00:01

Hey ladies! I'm having a real struggle of a day today. Emotionally I feel wiped, like I can't seem to shake this down mood in the ways that usually work a treat. I think this is the first time I've felt floored with emotions during pregnancy. I don't suffer from depression or anything like that but i've definitely felt different today. Hope it passes soon because so far I've really enjoyed pregnancy.

Hope you're all doing good x

Lavellan · 01/03/2019 10:18

Normally when I get down like that it lasts a few days, but I've noticed with pregnancy it's more like a few hours just now. And then back to happy, and then sad, then irritable, happy again... It's actually quite a nice change for me not to get stuck in a rut for so long.

I've gone and bought two pairs of maternity trousers from george - £8 each! - hope they're ok because although at 13 wk my work trousers still go on fine, they feel horrible on my belly by the end of the day.

And two pairs of dungaree dresses from New Look. Trying the normal and the maternity styles. Maybe if they both fit I'll keep the maternity one for later on.

clairemarie2702 · 02/03/2019 22:42

@Willacybaby19
I’m usually in control of my emotions but I have found it tough during pregnancy. If you don’t feel more like yourself within a few days it’s worth seeing your doctor.

My first consultant appointment was all about my weight and the additional risks. I’m going to join Slimming World next week to manage my weight gain.
I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend xxx

Beeseeinya · 03/03/2019 10:48

Joining you!
I'm 8+5 due Oct 9th 1st pregnancy
Age 36, 19st bmi of 42 I think.
First midwife and GP apps were quite sympathetic, no lectures yet. Got my full first mw, scan and consultant apps all within a few days of eachother at the end of March.
Very concerned about weight complications but just trying to stay calm at the mo. Might not even be a real baby in there so why worry Grin
I've joined slimming world, been trying to Work it out for a week. A bit tricky with the nausea but I haven't eaten this healthy in years so I'm sure it will help.
Weight seems stable (I can fluctuate by 6lb in a day from water retention!)
My main problem is piles. I suffer with them horribly since going on Cambridge weight plan a few years ago. I can no longer eat bread, or I'll be in agony next day. I've managed to control this for the past year or so with high fibre diet and water but being pregnant everything has slowed down. It's really painful, every day so I'm terrified. I'll have to talk to the GP about it at some point but it's so hard to get an appointment where I am and I'll do anything to avoid dealing with it :(

Willacybaby19 · 03/03/2019 15:37

Afternoon Ladies!! Hope we're all good.

clairemarie2702 Thank you for the sweet message, I'm feeling better for sure. Might of just been a bit of a day!

Is slimming world something consultants recommend or is this something you've decided to do on your own? Because I wouldn't have even thought about joining during pregnancy. I mean I'm overweight I know this, but I actually like myself the way I am and I eat healthily and drink endless amounts of water even before I was pregnant. I just don't wana spend my entire pregnancy worrying about being fat, we're growing life ladies, we're more than our weight!

Anywhooo, I've felt the baby move so much lately, like big waves of movement and we have our 20 week scan on Wednesday so very excited for that!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! xx
