Now here's a random question... what are everyone's thoughts dummies?

I personally don't want to use them, I never had one, but my partner is keen to use them..

Thoughts?

ButterflyFree · 22/03/2017 19:31

I'm with you @mcnics - don't want to use dummies. I guess because neither of us had them when we were babies either?!

Haven't actually discussed it before with DH; I'm sure he'd be fine with it either way though.

Notyetthere · 22/03/2017 20:03

I would like to think that we won't use dummies but I don't how I will feel after days of tiredness where a dummy might afford me 30mins of rest. I remember my mum struggling with my brother and the relief weeks later when she introduced the dummy. I was doing my gcses at the time and she was worried about my sanity as db was up crying all night.

OP posts:
Spindelina · 22/03/2017 22:49

DD used a dummy to sleep until she was nearly 3. It was that, or my boobs (we coslept until she was 15mo), or a level of crying-based sleep training that we weren't comfortable with. So we went for the dummy! It was only ever for sleep though - she wasn't allowed it out of her cot/car seat/sling/buggy/wherever she was supposed tonne sleeping.

Spindelina · 22/03/2017 22:49

tonne to be

Bawbles · 22/03/2017 22:53

mcnics my pet hate is children with a dummy permanently in their mouth, while toddling around and playing etc. You see parents putting photos on social media and never see baby without it in their mouth.

My daughter had one for sleeping, it was a comfort to her and I had no issue with her using her but once up from her nap the dummy was put out of reach.

It really helped soothe her when tired/grumpy but can massively impact on speech development so you just need to be careful not to overuse them.

We limited it to when she was in her cot and naps. She was a very early talker with beautiful clear diction so I'm happy it didn't impact on her speech as that was my main concern.

Seahawk80 · 23/03/2017 08:06

That's interesting @Spindelina and you're right, I suppose some people would see what I thought of as dingy and cramped as a cosy environment!

@natienka the London nursery scene is crazy isn't it. I'm in Brockley and it seems ok here but down the road in Blackheath the waiting lists are over 18 months

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 08:37

I was initially anti dummy but then became more open minded having had actually had a baby.

I was very keen to not let it affect bf which made me not attempt one for a couple of months.

It ended up my daughter wouldn't take one anyway when offered one when she was teething. Her little cousin spends 99% of the time with one in which I find such a shame because he's so cute. ☺️ There struggling to get it away from him tbf.

However I remain open minded and will not rule it out for dd2 🙂

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 08:38

They're*

LuciBee231015 · 23/03/2017 09:24

I'm hoping to breast feed, so if I do introduce a dummy I won't do it until around week 4/5 when we should have learnt to latch on properly etc. Then I may introduce one for sleeping as I think they can tend to want your boob just for comfort when going to sleep rather than actually feeding! Will see how I get on, I'm certainly not ruling it out. Will just have to see what baby is like. I agree tho, will try and keep it for sleeping only.

You could not introduce a dummy and they could start sucking their thumb which is actually worse for the teeth etc and you have no control over it. At least with a dummy you have some kind of control.

danigrace · 23/03/2017 09:57

@ButterflyFree sending love to your SIL, fingers crossed for you all. That's great the mole removal went well and you aren't sore.

@Seahawk80 so are you on the list already for your preffered and guaranteed a spot? That's good you found one you like and one less thing to worry about going forward!

My dummy thoughts - I never had one bit my sister did. Not planning on using one as 'first port of call' but if baby is unsettled and lots of other things hae been tried then we try a dummy and they find it soothing then that's fine. I guess it just goes back to the classic all babies are different, I was offered one but never took to it whereas my sister found it comforting. But I agree with other posters after the first 5/6 weeks and sleep time only would be the aim if baby did take to one.

No nose bleeds here but have had bleeding gums, probably exacerbated by the fact I'm scared to use the interdental brushes whilst they're more sensitive... I just need to woman up and get on with it!!

Well... DP finally decided he was 'ready' and ordered a DNA gender test kit last night, so it looks like we will be finding out the baby's gender! (mentioned in previous posts we aren't having ultrasounds so this is the version of gender reveal for us!)

danigrace · 23/03/2017 09:58

*but my sister did, I didn't bite my sister instead lol Smile

Notyetthere · 23/03/2017 10:17

I will definitely be open minded with regards to dummy. I also don't like the idea of baby suckling on their thumb.

Finally got a MATB1 form yesterday. The midwife also offered to listen to listen to baby's heartbeat. While she was feeling my belly for baby's position she pointed out that she could feel baby's foot! She even pointed out the toes end but all I could feel was a moving lump. We were laughing about it as she tried to demonstrate the baby exact position by laying on the floor. She also pointed out baby's bum position, right behind my belly button!Grin.

OP posts:
LuciBee231015 · 23/03/2017 10:33

Glad you got your form sorted not

I wish I knew what position my baby was in, I literally am clueless, I feel movement and kicks all over the place but have no idea how baby is laying.

butterflyfree thinking of your sister in law. Can't imagine what they must be going through.

LuciBee231015 · 23/03/2017 10:51

Ladies, not sure what you are doing about monitors but the Tommee Tippee video movement and sound monitor is currently on sale for half price at Argos for £99.99. Pic attached.

Lallypopstick · 23/03/2017 11:35

Ooh thanks for the tip Luci - I've sent it to my OH who has appointed himself as being in charge of buying a baby monitor.

I hadn't thought about a dummy but I'm not ruling one out. My niece sucked her thumb and still does aged 5 - you can't take a thumb away but you can take a dummy when they're a bit old.

Just had my whooping cough jab. My arm feels ok at the moment!

Not I hope my midwife tells me where everything is at the next appointment. I can feel hard bits sometimes but no idea what they are!

LuciBee231015 · 23/03/2017 11:48

I just went to get it from Argos and was sold out! So Tesco direct ate doing it for same price! 👍🏻

DrewOB0 · 23/03/2017 11:50

I got a snuzpod! Using offers etc I got it for £140 :)

TinklingTheIvories · 23/03/2017 14:13

Really need to sort the midwife and wc jab out after moving!!

I'm thinking of a dummy to soothe at night (once latching established) as I had one, and it disappeared one day but I wasn't that bothered (apparently). Never been a thumb sucker. I know some people who continued that habit until high school so I really want to avoid that if possible. Also don't like the sight of a dummy whilst the kids are active and doing things, so it'll be firmly for soothing at night if needed to save the boob as a soothing mechanism

ButterflyFree · 23/03/2017 15:29

Since @mcnics and I never had dummies AND never sucked our thumbs when we were little, I guess we're both banking on our babies following suit... 😅

I still have not purchased one single baby-related item 👀 ...However, I am feeling rather pleased with myself today as I have now booked and paid the deposits on both the Midwife-led care natural delivery package at the Kensington Wing, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, and also for placenta encapsulation from a great little (one-woman) company called Placenta Plus.

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 15:34

@ButterflyFree oooh that sounds good. That looks like such a lovely hospital as well :)

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 15:35

Never thought I'd say the words lovely and hospital in the same sentence 😂

ButterflyFree · 23/03/2017 15:54

@glitterglitters I know 😂 not two words you'd expect to pair together in a sentence.

I think I've become a bit spoilt with my hospital experiences in Dubai though; I go to a hospital called Medcare and I had my thyroidectomy surgery there, staying 4 nights. It's more like a hotel than a hospital! I'm doing all my prenatal appointments at its sister hospital - Medcare Women & Children's Hospital (check it out online if you want a snoop, it's relatively new and majority female-only staff) - which is a really beautiful space, and I would certainly be giving birth there if I was planning to deliver in the UAE.

I had emergency surgery at Chelsea & Westminster on the NHS when I was a child and stayed there on the paediatric ward more than 2 weeks so I'm comfortable and familiar with the hospital already, but lucky enough to be able to plump for the private maternity wing seeing as it's covered by my insurance :)

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 15:58

My parents lived in Thailand for a few years as my dad was working for the UN. Y mum had a few health problems and ended up in Bangkok's Bumungrad a couple of times. They had fountains, Starbucks, McDonalds, a wine menu and all sorts. Private gardens. It was quite fancy 😂

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 16:01

If I end up at the "big" hospital rather than the midwife led unit at the smaller hospital here I've told dh under NO circumstances am I going in a shared postnatal ward. I'd rather pay £100 a night for my own space. 🙈 is that bad? I'm funny about having my own space and stuff.
