OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Oh and the blood result can change a low-risk pregnancy to a high-risk. I am low-risk right now but the consultant said that if the blood results are anomal, one can end up with a high-risk anyway.

I found the following quite comprehensive
(careful very scientific)

apeainapod · 02/05/2007 22:41

Hi to all, old, new and those in between.....

Looks like these little ones are growing like the rest of us - thank God.

Feeling normal again - yip skip. The taste buds are flowing and the Pinot is chilled - before anyone has a go at me, a small glass a night does no harm, I have 3 others to prove it

Will anybody be finding out the sex of their 'beans' or will you wait for the grand finale?

LucyK1978 · 03/05/2007 09:32

@ German Gal - Good news that today's scan will be over the tummy!! They say they will look for the fluid on the back of the neck today which will give an indiciation, but then yes, I also have another scan next week at a special clinic which is supposed to be more detailed and take other test too.....? Keine Ahnung!

Sooooo excited!!!! (get more piccies!!!) Sorry. Must. calm. Down. Will. Make. Myself. Puke.

GermanGal · 03/05/2007 10:00

Hi LucyK
I know exactly what you mean.... I have the second scan on Saturday (pictures!! pictures!! "Real" colourful ones this time) and I'm SO excited I can't concentrate at all.... arrrggghhhh!!!!
Just told my boss, who now wants to know when I'll be back.... errrrrmmmm.... bring on the one year 60% paid maternity leave

Is anyone getting very forgetful these days?? I don't know if it's just me or if that is another "side effect"? My brain just doesn't seem to function anymore....

aikigypsy · 03/05/2007 13:08

Choudru yes, my life is very dramatic these days. Probably a bit too dramatic. My friends tell me that I should write it all down because I won't believe how much was happening at once, in the future. The big worry now is that I'm going to have to move house at some point before the baby arrives my roommates are very anti-infant -- and I have no idea where I'm going to go. I might go live with family for a couple of months around October-November, or might get another place near here, if I have the money. Decisions, decisions.

pea -- I definitely want to find out the sex. I keep getting urges to buy pink things, and I want to know what I'm getting myself into.

LucyK1978 · 03/05/2007 13:35

German Gal - I hadn't even thought about the images being in colour.....!!!!! I am seeing a different doctor than normal today, and hope she speaks a little English, or everything will be translated via my husband, bless him!

And I know what you mean about being forgetful, I've been severley ditzy (but then that is normal for me too!)

choudru · 03/05/2007 14:54

Glad everything was fine in the end easywriter. Bet you're relieved!

aikigypsy - what a palava! Hope you're not worrying too much about it - not ideal for pregnant women. Good luck with it all - I'm glad you have family around to help out if you need them. Good idea about writing everything down. I did that while dating then boyfriend (now DH). Feels kind of nice that I have recorded all my thoughts from that period.

And once baby arrives you won't be able to remember your own phone number, never mind any of your life prior to giving birth! ;)

Pea - yes I will be finding out the sex. Am far too impatient to wait.

choudru · 03/05/2007 14:56

By the way, I didn't feel sick last night for the first time in months! Didn't puke up or anything!

If I don't feel sick tonight either I shall consider myself officially 'smug and not sick'.

Pleasepleasepleaseplease!

choudru · 03/05/2007 15:00

By the way no.2, has anyone given any thought to antenatal classes yet?

I know it's early but I am definitely going to do NCT. Booked them last pregnancy but gave birth before they started!

I still have no experience of natural childbirth or ever had any proper advise on breastfeeding etc.

Last time everything happened in such a rush that it all just went by in a blur.

The main reason I want to do them is to meet other mums in the area since I have only just moved to Leeds from London. All my friends are down south and I need to find a way to stop pining for them.

You guys are my emotional crutch sob

geekInPigtails · 03/05/2007 16:31

choudru, at my booking in appointment I was given a booklet about the antenatal classes offered by the NHS in my area. The list was:

basic 3 evening course, covering labour and pain relief options, and some basic after-birth stuff like how to change a nappy and depression and stuff
relaxation and breathing techniques
waterbirth
breastfeeding
young parents
twins or more
(I think that was all!)

I put my name down for the first 4, and I've got dates for the first 3, but got a reply saying that the breastfeeding one is over-subscribed so I'm on a waiting list. (Btw, I've not made my mind up whether I actually want to go for waterbirth, but I'm definitely interested, which is why I'm going to the class!). I think if I do manage to get on the breastfeeding one too then they sound pretty comprehensive and I won't worry about booking anything other than NHS. If it looks like I won't get on the breastfeeding one, I guess I'll see if I can find an NCT or La Leche one or something. Not sure how late to leave it though.

Do the NHS not offer anything like that where you are? I'm curious how varied the service is...

choudru · 03/05/2007 17:36

Wow Geek, what a choice.

I didn't get offered any information about antenatal classes at all.

I have to admit I will probably go for the NCT ones anyway even though they are pricey. Reason being that I kind of want to meet other mothers in my situation i.e. early 30s, taking a short break from career to have children.

The ladies attending the NHS classes where I was in London were much MUCH younger - 16 year olds making me feel ancient!

I hope I don't sound like I have my head up my (ever expanding) backside, but I feel i'm more likely to strike up a friendship with someone above a 'certain' age.

Maybe they are usually filled with women of a broad age range and I have totally got the wrong impression.

Thoughts and advice please.

nykate · 03/05/2007 22:02

Thanks for the scan info. BTW, I am in London, but new-ish to the country, so just trying to figure how things go here. When I had DD2 in the US, nuchal scans/blood tests were considered fairly new and not paid for by insurance, so I've never had one. But, always had tons of scans as 1)my OB would do them in the office in the beginning for dating and to check heartbeat and 2) DD1 was diagnosed in utero with hydrocephalus, so was scanned very often to check progress and DD2 was scanned frequently as a precaution. Just feeling a bit anxious now and hoping for some reassuring news at this scan.

Did anyone watch Midwives Undercover tonight? Really disturbing. I got really emotional watching it.

nykate · 03/05/2007 22:04

Oh, sorry, forgot to ask if anyone would recommend antenatal classes for 3rd timers or would it be a waste of time? My mw kind of just skipped over it. Thanks for your thoughts.

choudru · 04/05/2007 08:49

NYKate,

Hope everything works out with the scan results. It's not easy waiting - I'm so less anxious now that I have mine over with.

As for the programme - I didn't watch it because I knew I would find it depressing. I wimped out.

Which hospital were they undercover at? Was it really bad?

I guess it's more fuel to Loopy's homebirth crusade...

Didn't puke last night either - I feel like I have a new lease of life! Still had to go to bed at 9pm though but rather be tired than tired AND sick.

LorLa · 04/05/2007 10:12

Hi to all due in Nov. I haven't been on MN since I found out I was pg but am hoping to do some serious chatting while going through all the many changes!!! I did watch most of the programme last night until it all became too scary and I turned off. I live in London and so it was scary to know that is the worst area. Still, I didn't see anything about St. Thomas' which is where I hope to give birth - has anyone given birth or heard anything about St. Thomas'?

I am 11+4 and still haven't heard about my scan so am very anxious. Hoping to get a letter soon with not too long to wait for a scan !!!

LucyK1978 · 04/05/2007 10:45

I didn't watch the Panorama programme last night either. Hubby wanted to but I asked him to switch channels, as I wasn't feeling brave enough! We had just come home from our lovely 12 week scan experience, and I wanted to stay firmly on my 'happy cloud'!!

About St. Thomas hospital, I have Lupus and at one stage thought I would have to travel into London St Thomas for all my checks as they have a special Lupus maternity clinic - I hear they have a fantastic reputation!

apeainapod · 04/05/2007 11:17

Lucy sorry to be ignorant - what's Lupus?

Oh dear suddenly thinking what the hell am I doing? I yelled at the little ones yesterday ALL day and I just keep thinking that I am going to be an even worse mother when this one comes along. Porr little girl, she won't know what's hit her.

RGPargy · 04/05/2007 11:21

I didn't watch the Panorama programme either last night coz i didn't know it was on!!

I dont know about antenatal classes. I'm 10+4 with my second baby, but the gap between this one and my DS1 is 17 years. I never went to any antenatal classes with DS1 either but i spose as i've been through it all once before (albeit a long time ago), should i go along to these? I'm thinking i might go along, more for my DP's sake, than anything else!

What do you think?

Pheebe · 04/05/2007 12:44

I have to say I don't set much store by the NHS ante-natal classes. When I was pregnant with ds we went to one and walked out halfway through as the mw spent nearly an hour telling us when we went into labour we wouldn't really be in labour and that if we went to hospital too early we'd definitely be sent home so to stay at home until we were in too much pain to move! I thought this was absolutely disgusting and told her so and dh, me and 2 other couples walked out. We didn't go back and won't be going to any this time either. Having said that, we have lots of bubs in the family and all get involved so we both have lots of experience caring for if not birthing los.

LucyK1978 · 04/05/2007 12:55

Sorry, Lupus is an immune system disorder whereby you have 'nasty' anti-bodies that can attack against foreign things in your body, such as your internal organs or in pregnancy can cross the placenta to affect the baby. These anti-bodies can also cause miscarriage, premature birth or heart defects in the baby. I've had it for years and fortunately it's never been aggressive. We had a load of extra tests done at 10 weeks and pleased to be told my existing anti-bodies haven't risen and results weren't too high, so fingers crossed all will be okay!

We will have extra scans along the way and we've been advised to have a treatment to help dilute my 'nasty' anti-bodies (done at 17, 20 and 24 weeks), so I hope everything will be just wonderful! (I'm a positive thinker!)

RGPargy · 04/05/2007 14:09

I'm sure everything will be fine Lucky.

Good luck!!

geekInPigtails · 04/05/2007 14:15

choudru - totally understand the desire to have something in common with the other ladies at the antenatal classes (other than the baby obviously!). I'm hoping there'll be at least a few people I can relate to at the NHS classes I go to, but I obviously won't know until I get there!

nykate - i hesitate to offer any advice since I'm a first timer and you've already been through this twice! (I'm in awe ) But... personally I would consider at least finding a class that covered things like pain relief options and medical interventions during labour, since they may be different (or use different terminology) here from the US. But as I say, I've got no experience and tend to be a little paranoid so maybe a quick chat with your midwife will clear things like that up enough for you.

rgpargy - i think i'd say the same thing to you as nykate, medical stuff moves on so quickly that it might be worth attending a class about that side of things, but obviously you can probably skip the 'how to change a nappy' stuff! The NHS in my area does a single Refresher evening for non-first-time parents, which I'm guessing just does a brief reminder of the more technical stuff.

lorla - hello! have you considered calling your midwife to find out if a scan has been booked for you and the letter has just got lost in the post? If you're expecting a 12 week dating one, it's getting pretty close and I think they don't like doing dating much later than that because it gets less reliable.

I'm sounding like a real advocate of the NHS aren't I?!? No reason except that this is my first time (as I keep saying, sorry) so I've not had any bad experiences with them yet!

Ladies, we're not doing very well at compiling the roll call - come on, someone dig out Fingernails' last update and add themselves!

LorLa · 04/05/2007 14:50

Thanks geekInPigtails. I always blame living in London for everything but I haven't even seen a midwife yet. I had 1 doctors appt where I took the pg test and another where he took my blood pressure and told me I had been referred. I called the hospital on Monday and they said they hadn't received mt referral but rang back on Tuesday and they said they have. I think I will call on Tuesday if I still haven't heard. The worst thing is rushing home at the end of the day to see that there is, yet again, no letter in the post!

Likewise - this is my first as well, hence my cluelessness!!!!

RGPargy · 04/05/2007 15:36

Geek - yeah i know technology has moved on an awful lot in the last 17 years. But also, now that i'm pg again, it only feels like yesterday i was changing nappies etc and it's all starting to flood back into my memory banks lol.
