A spray bottle of water sometimes recommended to cool you down, or a cloth you can wet and wipe face etc with

RasperryInAMelon · 09/02/2017 08:14

Esme am I being daft... a small hug to make your first wee easier!?... Confused

She wrote jug! To fill with warm water. Grin

WishIWasSleeping · 09/02/2017 08:24

Raspberry - not daft! Your first few wees can sting as the whole area is so tender and swollen and sore. If you have stitches it's also good practice to have a jug of warm salt water next to the loo at home to use to rinse as you wee or just as your finishing to help keep clean and assist healing.

MissMooMoo · 09/02/2017 08:25

raspberry you will be very sore down below and possibly have stitches. Urine will burn so if you pour some warm water over yourself whilst you wee it can help apparently.

I am taking a few pairs of flip flops, one for the shower and then one for wearing around the hospital instead of slippers.
Also planning to pack a different bag incase of a longer stay to either leave in the boot of the car (if we have one by may!) Or at home that DH can just collect and bring.

EsmesBees · 09/02/2017 08:31

You'll need some hugs as well as a jug raspberry 😉.

ginandcake · 09/02/2017 08:54

I definitely needed a hug for my first wee!

teainbed · 09/02/2017 09:12

First wee in the shower or bath!

Rustler74 · 09/02/2017 09:21

Thanks for that list. Copied it to my notes. Bag will be made ready soon, mainly because whatever I'll need to buy goes straight in there!

RasperryInAMelon · 09/02/2017 09:47

Hugs and jugs 🙈😂

Thanks for clearing that up!

Must say my wees didn't hurt (I was so full of IV fluids!) but the wee in the shower thing I did for a good few days just in case.

For my first wee I had to do it in a jug (so my own jug wouldn't have helped!) as they wanted to see how much there was - was that just me!?

I found this invaluable for soothing sore bits (I had a pretty bad tear and stitches due to the forceps, but I imagine it's just as good if you've only been stretched!) www.earthmamaangelbaby.co.uk/shop/new-mama-bottom-spray-120-ml-4-oz.html
Before I bought that I did spend some time looking for witch hazel (supposed to help if you put it on your maternity pads) but the only ones I could find were distilled and I didn't think the alcohol would help.

PowerofThree · 09/02/2017 10:09

Impressed that people are already thinking of bags! Teenage me would have been very organised and made a list, neatly folded everything etc with reasonable time. Sadly grown-up me is likely to think about being organised and have a mental list before randomly throwing a bunch of shit in a bag at the last minute...

I am not looking forward to all this soothing of bits and first weeing!

My other little app is helpful at times!

Lavender oil mixed with a little milk in a bath is amazing. A midwife told me about it just after I had my first and I took no notice to begin with. Day 5 I took a lavender oil bath and wish I had done it sooner.
With our second I took a lavender bath the same day I had her and I healed much quicker, I had a second degree test with my second and no tear with my first.

For first timers, one thing that took me by surprise was the after pains when your uterus is contracting back to normal size and also I bled for 4 weeks, which I also wasn't expecting. It is normal. I just wasn't expecting it.

RasperryInAMelon · 09/02/2017 10:24

What ap is that Wish?

raspberry it is pregnancy +
It has beautiful graphics of baby. I think it cost money after a certain amount of weeks but I paid for it, less than £2 if I remember correctly

Sipperskipper · 09/02/2017 10:59

Place marking!

I think tearing is what I am most scared about. Can't think about it without crossing my legs!

peasandquiet · 09/02/2017 11:15

Juat remembered to write to my employer today to let them know about mat leave, I'm right on the deadline so anyone before 24th may should have done and after you need to do soon! Hope everyone is better organised on that front than me!!

I had to do 1st wee in a jug to prove I'd been. It wasn't that bad from memory, tho had a local for stitches so potentially not as bad as I probably went soon after. The most memorable part was how much wee there was ... it was insane, as I felt like I'd only wee a teaspoon full each time in the last few weeks of pregnancy so it was a huge relief 😂
Will be packing bag after 30 wk scan I think, see how that goes will probably determine how thoroughly I do it!
My recommendation to add to list is Vaseline, good to put on baby's bum to help get the sticky meconiun off, you shouldn't need sudocream when they are first born.
Also lanolish for your nips and I saved hotel size toiletries to make my wash bag smaller, haven't been as on that this time so will do lots of asking for samples on cosmetic counters in the next few weeks.
Hairbands also important for those with long hair, it gets in the way!!

Adventuregame · 09/02/2017 11:21

I've got hair bands on my list - whenever I see any births on TV either real life or fiction I always think 'Why on earth haven't they tied their hair back' !!!!

Adventuregame · 09/02/2017 11:31

Is anyone else planning on doing bi lingual OPOL ? My partner and his family speak fluent Welsh and he's intending on speaking that to baby. I won't have a clue what's being said but I'm all for it as I read that if a child is bi lingual from birth then they find it much easier to learn other languages at school etc so that can only be a good thing ! I know welsh isn't the most useful of 2nd languages (if at all) but it seems silly not to do it if we have the option ?

savagehk · 09/02/2017 11:37

Opol? One parent one language? My 4yo is fully trilingual. We have an au pair who speaks only French to him, we speak English when all together and OH and I both speak the third language to him, as now he's getting much more English out and about. I think we were trying me English OH third language at first though.

Adventuregame · 09/02/2017 11:46

Yes it'll be me and my family, friends speaking English and then OH and his family speaking welsh. I have tried to learn bits of welsh but it's so hard !!!

savagehk · 09/02/2017 11:50

I'd go for it. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work (which I think is unlikely), and if it causes confusion by the time baby gets to nursery/school you can always revert to 100% english. It generally seems to be a good idea to expose babies to as many sounds (language-wise) as possible in the first year anyway.

newbieho · 09/02/2017 11:56

Adventure OPOL is on our agenda as well. The kid won't be able to master grammar as it's very tricky but as long as he can communicate and read later on in the second language I am happy.

teainbed · 09/02/2017 11:58

It's funny getting towards the business end of things isn't it? And imagining what might happen.
