Yes just saline drops bigfam. The one I have is called Mandanol Nasal Drops if that helps.

Your evening sounds good! I'm just making some dinner atm!

Bigfam · 13/01/2017 19:28

Thanks, I'll have a look. I was also thinking about buying a nasal syringe as well, will see how it goes anyway. Dd 1 2 & 3 and ds are all fed so I'm now cooking for myself while dp is off out. Baby is asleep now (preparing for her 12.30-4am wake up session!)

stripeyorangesocks71 · 13/01/2017 19:34

No worries! Yes we have a nocturnal baby here also... I'm hoping it changes soon 😴 we are only 15 days into this adventure!

StubbleTurnips · 13/01/2017 20:49

Ah the nocturnal ones, you have my sympathies! DD still sleeps worse than her baby brother, he was up once last night for a feed and went back down. She however was up about 8 times before finally getting in with us at 3am Hmm

DH has gone out this evening and I've had a double wake up with both of them screaming Shock it's going to be a long evening.

Joining you all here on the sleep deprived lounge. Baby KitKat's sleep this week has been crap. Not sure if it's because of her vaccinations or we're just having a bad week. She wakes as soon as she goes in her moses basket, despite how long we've held her beforehand or how much rocking we do once she's in there. She only really settles on either me or DH, and I thought we had made progress with that. If she has settled she's woken up with wind or with a snuffly nose. DH offered to take her at 5.30am for a couple of hours as I had barely slept all night. I was so grateful I cried! |-O

StubbleTurnips · 14/01/2017 11:19

Ah kit they're all a bit unsettled after jabs. We're doing dentenox eith all evening feeds now as it helps with he wins. With going down we've found that swaddling is the only option, both ours have / had a really strong Moro reflex which always wakes them up if unswaddled. It's not for everyone though as some parents / medical types see it as a risk.

OP posts:
Bigfam · 14/01/2017 14:08

We had a better night last night, woke at half 12, quick bottle then back down until 6am.
Hope baby kit is doing a bit better after jabs & everyone got some sleep.

How's your lo doing nurse?

Romy is 6 weeks today & showing off some full on smiles, definitely no mistaking it for wind. Has anyone had a period yet, I'm starting to panic a bit that mine hasn't returned...

Bigfam · 14/01/2017 14:09

How was Baby stripey last night?

NurseRosie · 14/01/2017 14:40

Not quite caught up but thought I'd better up date. We are on home leave and attending everyday for antibiotics. Lo doing really well although gets passed himself at times. We both have thrush again and I've struggled with my GP again, finally got a prescription sorted but they didn't fax it to the chemist so I'll have to go to the walk in centre once we've finished on the ward.
Hope all is good with mums and babies x

Mejse · 14/01/2017 14:52

stubble we are having to swaddle too, the little guy has a really strong rooting reflex. If he puts his hands near his face, which he does often, he will try to suck them but he can't quite manage it. He wakes himself up and gets really worked up.
We were only up 3 times in the night last night which is a huge improvement. DH goes back to work on Wednesday I'm feeling a little nervous about doing everything on my own

Thisisbonkers · 14/01/2017 19:16

Ugh we had a terrible night last night and by this morning I was ready to throttle DP due to his lack of help (the very least he can do is change him when I've been feeding for hours!) but he did take him downstairs this morning and gave him a bottle while I got a couple of hours.

Not looking forward to tonight. All he's done today is feed. Nipples are raw! Finally managed to get him asleep for a short while and hope that I can get him to settle later. Tough day.

stripeyorangesocks71 · 15/01/2017 09:53

Morning all! Sorry bigfam yesterday was a bit chaotic for all in the stripey household. Was DP's birthday, we had been up most of the night with lo (he is so nocturnal 😴) and we had family visiting. Lo is doing ok with his breathing now however we are keeping up with giving him the nasal drops as it helps him breathe during feeds. How is Romy doing? x

OrianaBanana · 15/01/2017 11:02

DD may as well be nocturnal the amount of times she wakes for feeds. She fed constantly during the day too. We are co-sleeping otherwise I've no idea how I'd cope.

Thrush and mastitis here at the same time, feel terrible. Still, struggling on, forcing myself into the shower now, hopefully I'll feel better soon...

duxb · 15/01/2017 16:00

Another nocturnal one here - we are now at five weeks and two days old. Still dealing with thrush but my milk dried up so we are now FF.

Fingers crossed we can get sleep like we do during the day at night soon (ie: feeding every three to four hours)

SolomanDaisy · 15/01/2017 20:07

DD is pretty good at night, she usually has a chunk of five or six hours sleep though about half the time she has to co sleep to do that. During the day is so variable it's crazy. Today she has only cat napped and won't be put down, other days she has had a three hour nap in her cot. She also feeds very frequently during the day.

I hope all the sick babies are better soon!

Bella1985 · 16/01/2017 09:09

Help! I'm a longtime lurker, have posted a couple of times but mostly taken comfort from reading your posts as DS was due and born at the end of Dec so always seemed a few steps behind most of you. But I desperately need advice...so am delurking...bear with me and the long post...

Are the nocturnal babies all bf or do some of you ff and still have nocturnal babies? I'm a FTM and have been ebf DS for 3 weeks and I'm slowly going insane. He fusses at the breast from around 9pm until 5am non stop (it used to be 1am-5am but the hours of fussyness are getting longer) If I dare try to put him down he screams the house down, becomes frantic and inconsolable, rooting like a loon. Going to DH doesn't comfort him either, despite his best efforts. He will feed/suckle for hours on end. I've heard about supply and demand etc but it's not very comforting when I'm desperately tired.

I'm fantasising about switching to formula (really want to stick with bf - keep reading it gets better and much easier than ff after the first 6 weeks) but sort of wonder if I'm just deluding myself - switching to formula is unlikely to switch my baby's personality at night is it?! Last night was particularly bad so this morning is a very gloomy one, we had visitors all afternoon yesterday too so didn't manage to sleep when DS slept...hoping to get some sleep squeezed in this afternoon and will feel better about bf and things in general afterwards.

Would appreciate your insight as I don't have many mum friends so feel very much alone in this. There's a bf support group I'm headed to tomorrow but just wondered if ff is not what I imagine it to be...

Insertwitticismhere · 16/01/2017 09:35

Ah Bella our nights are like yours at the minute and dd was born 13th Dec. I bf my eldest to 16months so feel like I need to stick it out with dd2 but I'm so much more tired this time - probably because I have a toddler to chase now so no napping with the baby!

Anyway this 2015 study made me feel better. It finds that there is no difference between bf and ff babies in terms of night feeding.

There's loads of mumsnet threads on the topic, most recent I saw was this one

Hope you manage to catch some zzz's today!

stripeyorangesocks71 · 16/01/2017 09:38

Sorry to hear you are struggling Bella, I am also a ftm and wanted to ebf with my little man. Unfortunately I couldn't keep up with how much he needed so I decided after getting out of hospital that we would try and use formula as a top up. Now I can safely say we are mixed feeding due to the amount he seems to need! It's going well and he happily feeds from breast and bottle, plus my DP can help feed too which he loves doing. My little man is still nocturnal as they come and it's wiping me and my DP out but I hope we start to make progress soon!
You are doing so well having ebf for 3 weeks! I know how hard it is now I've tried myself and can only say well done Smile it's not a bad thing to top up with formula, mix feed or ff. It's your choice so go with what you want. Sending Flowers and Cake

StubbleTurnips · 16/01/2017 09:51

bella DD was like that, and trust me no matter what method of feeding happened it didn't stop the night owl-ness. remembers at 9m old waking every hour for 6 weeks Shock

Sounds a bit colicky, have you tried any medications for it? We've found that dentenox has made no improvement in DS evening colic. Trying coilef next.

Same as stripey we mixed feed, so he can have it in a bottle at night.

Just repeat this too shall pass it got me through the newborn days last time.

SolomanDaisy · 16/01/2017 10:57

Bella, my DD is EBF and was nocturnal. She just gradually shifted to sleeping at night. She still cluster feeds, but it's more like 8-11 and then asleep till five. If you can hold out for a few weeks it should get better.

kittyscot81 · 16/01/2017 12:21

bella I'm also a ftm who is attempting to ebf and baby is now just over 3 weeks. I've been finding him much more unsettled in the evening and at night time. Friday consisted of a 10 hr crying marathon accompanied by the onset of mastitis, so I am not doing very well either. I have figured out that at least some of the screaming and rooting is comfort driven and think he actually has colic or wind. Feel your baby's tummy and if it's really hard they might have colic. I've found holding baby upright over my shoulder has helped settle him.

OrianaBanana · 16/01/2017 14:24

Bella are you co-sleeping? Can you feed lying down to get some rest? If not co-sleeping maybe DH can watch over you both while you sleep and feed to make sure baby is still feeding, then maybe try and move baby to the cot when they've finished? Or at least let you have a little bit of sleep while baby is feeding. I'm not much help, stm here and have almost the same problem but I co-sleep so at least snatch a bit of sleep while she cluster feeds at night. Flowers It will get easier and you're doing brilliantly x

Bigfam · 16/01/2017 16:34

Bella my lo is ff and has been since birth & she's still waking some nights from half 12 until 5am, I hope that gives you some comfort. If you're not co-sleeping, maybe read up on how to do it safely and try it? Then you can try and dream feed?
I actually read a study about co-sleeping (provided it's done safely) it's actually beneficial to newborns, there's a study I read online and the results were amazing!

stripey I wish I'd gone out and bought saline spray after you'd said it was helping, Romy had a scare last night that nearly had me phoning an ambulance, she was so blocked up her mouth and lips went white, after I sat her up she rapidly improved, anyway I went to the chemist earlier and picked some up, after the first spray in each nostril loads of horrible mucusy blood came out (I'm assuming it's from when she was born) and she sounds loads better, she's still a little grunter, but the blocked sound has cleared right up, thank God! How's your lo?

nurse hope baby is doing better now and your daily hospital visits are putting him back on track to being healthy & happy 😊

Bella1985 · 16/01/2017 17:29

Thanks for all your replies. I was desperate for a quick fix and ff clearly won't be. We have the chicco next2me but haven't attached it to the bed yet as I had an emcs and found it hard to get in and out of bed with it attached. DS seems very uncomfortable flat on his back so we've got it raised, not sure how that will work attached. Will look in to feeding lying down, I'm a little petrified of falling asleep on him so will research it to make sure we go about it safely.

Thanks insert for the links, those are really interesting reads and very reassuring. Will hold on to that mantra stubble. I appreciate the responses very much. You're all Star

stripeyorangesocks71 · 16/01/2017 17:45

Oh bigfam what a scare I hope she's doing ok now and you have nothing else like that happen! My lo seems ok, little bit snotty every now and again so using the saline drops and they clear his nose pretty well.
We just seem to have greedy baby at the moment he will feed and we wind him several times in between, then he'll finish and seem settled, then shortly after start routing again as if to want more, so we give him a little more or he will bf more and then it's like he's overflowed and brings the extra bit back up.. then seems comforted and stops routing for more... is this normal? It happens at least once a day currently for the past few days
