Evening all, had our gender scan over the weekend and found out we are having a boy! So excited and started looking / buying bits and pieces! When does everyone plan on buying the big stuff - ie furniture, travel system etc?

For the people asking about the 16week appt my midwife booked it in at the booking in appt so it def seems very different area by area.
Hope all are ok, and looking forward to xmas with a bump!

Evening all!

Welcome tomato. I am another back seat higher in this bus with an EDD of 23rd june.

I was bored before the scan and am now on a wee high as people are just finding out so it is all exciting. Then I will be a bit bored again.

My 16 week appointment got booked by the midwife during my 12 week scan appointment. I also have a consultant appointment so I am being kept busy.

MumofthreeandBean · 19/12/2016 20:42

catlady I had graco travel systems for my first 3 children, I personally loved mine, had 2 different ones, good value travel system, ours lasted ages too.

Poppydm · 19/12/2016 20:49

Catlady and tele could I be a bit thick and ask what a co-sleeper is? Is that like the close to you crib that attaches to your bed? Or something totally different? Huge congratulations on your baby boy Mrspage. I have my gender scan on Christmas Eve and I'm so excited! Did you have any inkling that it was a boy?
I have my 16 week midwife appointment tomorrow. Does anyone know what they do at it? Are they likely to listen to the heartbeat?
7th January will be here before you know it Hazy. Do you have any inklings?

mrspage1985 · 19/12/2016 20:57

Thanks Poppy I thought it was a boy but my husband was adamant it was a girl!!
Xmas eve - what a fab xmas present! Xx

Evening all! I'be got my 16 week appt tomorrow, really hoping to hear the heartbeat. Although I have an anterior placenta so might not be able to. Trying to convince myself I can feel movement, however with the placenta at the front I have been told that I probably won't feel anything for awhile 😞
Congrats to the early gender scans! We're going to stay team yellow again 😬

HazyHazyJeans · 19/12/2016 21:07

I think it's a boy poppy but I thought that with DD too and was obviously wrong! Ha! So my 'inklings' can't be trusted! Not long until you find out! Exciting! Grin

Quite a few people have mentioned hearing the heartbeat at their 16w appt but I'm sure the MW refused the try when I was pregnant with DD. I think they can be cautious as it can still be hard to find & cause unnecessary worry at this stage. Must depend on the MW...

Sixisthemagicnumber · 19/12/2016 21:55

My friend had one of those Graco mirage travel systems catlady, it got very squeaky and rickety after 6 months of use. It was also quite difficult to steer. Always test a buggy by making sure you can steer it easily with one hand around the shop as there are lots of times you will need to steer with just one hand.

sickofTeletubbies · 19/12/2016 22:30

Poppy yes it's the close to me crib. Although I have heard lots of negative comments about the chicco one. Apparently it tilts toward the bed which means the baby slides. I plan on taking the side off my cot. DD still co-sleeps and I'm definitely taking the advice and not co-sleeping with a baby and toddler. My friend has a Graco pram and hers is very squeaky. It is a beast though and I am very envious of her cup holder.

At my 16 week appointment with DD we heard the heart beat. It did take a long time to find and I vowed that day I wouldn't buy a doppler. Munday I had an anterior placenta with DD and didn't feel movement until 20+ weeks. No problems with hearing heart beat though.

Currently sat on the sofa struggling to keep a piece of toast down 😢

Poppydm · 20/12/2016 04:47

Hope you're feeling better Tele. I was looking at the Snuzpods. Would anyone recommend them? For about the forth night in a row I'm awake at stupid o'clock. Got to be up early in the morning too Confused.

Mooseville · 20/12/2016 06:07

I too am considering a Snuzpod. Any advice would be appreciated.
Are the next to you sleepers really worth the money? We've offers of cribs and Moses baskets that could be put next to the bed for free, however I do still really want the Snuzpod!

HazyHazyJeans · 20/12/2016 07:57

I suppose it depends on previous experience. I had a crib in our room & a Moses basket downstairs for DD. I vowed if we had another child then a next to me/co sleeper crib would be top of my list. Newborns (and older!) want to feel you next to them, a crib near the bed, with bars separating you just doesn't cut it! We ended up co sleeping a lot anyway but a co sleeper crib would've given us extra room. I've actually heard good things about the Chico one. Not sure which one I'll get. Ideally I'll buy second hand but they never seem to come up in my area!

catlady15 · 20/12/2016 08:42

The one I'm getting is just a crib with one side that comes down and the height of the mattress is the same as our bed height (lucky as I didn't measure before bidding!). I hadn't heard of co sleepers before either poppy. I think they're just a crib with one side that can open to the bed so you can sleep next to baby safely? The one I'm getting isn't super fancy. Here's the link if you're interested: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112234226335

Thanks for the advice on Graco. Apparently they're discontinuing that make, so I'm not sure that's a good sign, but it does seem to have good reviews! Thinking I might go and test it out if there are still some left near us after Christmas.

Hope 16 week appointments go well!

Tomatolover · 20/12/2016 11:25

Thanks everyone. I've just called and booked my 16 week apt.

I heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time at my doctors appointment today

Blueskyrain · 20/12/2016 11:29

GRUMP. Its becoming clear that after Christmas I'm no longer going to be able to wear my suit jackets for work. I'd put on a little weight before pregnancy so were a little tighter to begin with, but they are now starting to gape at the buttons.

Why is it, some.maternity clothes are really cheap, but nowhere seems to do cheap maternity suits. Grrrr. I really envy those ofyou that can just wear floaty dresses and leggins to work instead.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 20/12/2016 11:46

Could you just wear the jackets unfastened to buy you a bit more time bluesky?

Hermano · 20/12/2016 12:05

Sleeping options:
I've seen a few chats about snuzpods, co-sleeper cribs etc, and I know about some traditional things like moses basket.

I have no idea what I want to go with to start with. Last time we borrowed a lovely hammock off a friend, baby loved it BUT we got into a habit of bouncing baby to soothe her to sleep, and then as she grew super quickly she grew out of it by ~10 weeks (was supposed to last to ~6 months), and then she really struggled to get to sleep in the cot bed we moved her into. She still had her startle reflex and so jolted herself awake, and could no longer be bounced like she'd got used to.

What I'm really after is a website which lists out all the different sleeping options with a bit of info about each so I can browse and work out which one would suit us best.

Does anyone know if such a marvellous thing exists?

Hermano · 20/12/2016 12:08

Oh and further to my post above, if anyone has any recommendations I'm very keen to hear them. For now I'm assuming there are no space/budget restrictions...

I probably want to keep baby with me in eg the living room for the first couple of months, then start putting them in a bedroom at say 9pm to get used to sleeping somewhere else (will check them regularly and use video monitor) and slowly move naps to bedroom too. So preferably either something portable, or 2 different sleep things, one for day and one for night.

Realistically baby will be in a carrier strapped to me for the first few months whenever sleeping I'm sure! But I'd like other options

Hermano · 20/12/2016 12:10

Oh and I do mean put baby in our bedroom at night, just in case anyone is worried I'm putting them in another room?!
I'll stop posting now...

Blueskyrain · 20/12/2016 12:16

Six, thats going to be my plan for the next couple of days as an emergency, but its really, really frowned on, so I'll have to have something decent to wear in the new year :-(

I was hoping to avoid buying any maternity clothes until about February, when my best friend is likely to be out of hers...

LemonPoppySeedMuffin · 20/12/2016 13:03

To those who mentioned the snuzpod, I had one for DS and thought it was great, will definatley use it again this time. Used it with the side permenantly down so I could just slide him in and out for feeding (he wasn't ever in it whilst we weren't in bed, used a travel cot downstairs for naps/sleeping in the evening) though the side is easy to zip up and down if you like.

The only negative for me was it was a little narrow by the end - we stopped using it at 5 months as DS liked to sleep with his arms up by his head and there wasn't enough space for him to do that without spilling out onto our mattress, which wasn't comfy for him. He was huge though (above the 99th percentile for height and 91st for weight!) and still fit it length wise right to 6 months (I tried him in it the day we got round to putting it in the loft!).

catlady15 · 20/12/2016 13:21

I've found a couple of articles, Hermano: m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/7328302 and www.babycentre.co.uk/a1053610/newborn-sleep-what-to-buy. Thinking maybe a moses basket would also be a good idea. So much to consider!

Hermano · 20/12/2016 15:07

Thanks catlady - I'll read both articles.

I'm worried about the new baby growing out of anything I put them in by about 8 weeks, my last one grew so quickly - was the heaviest baby out of my previous fb group of over 100 so I'm not worrying about nothing - we were seen by paed for a year due to her huge size!

She's now 3 and podgy but fairly normal (and absolutely perfect of course)

sickofTeletubbies · 20/12/2016 15:14

To those asking about co-sleepers. For me it is a must this time as DD would not settle and it was exhausting getting up to settle her. I know the moses basket is right next to you but it's so much harder lifting the baby from there instead of being able to settle the baby right next to you. It may sound totally lazy but life was so nuch easier when she was right next to me. She actually hated her moses basket and slept much better in anything else. I didn't buy a co-sleeper though. I pulled the side off the cot and pushed it up against the bed. I also plan on swaddling this time. It's a big no no and totally against baby law but DD was tiny and I think she needed the security of being wrapped.

To those first timers who have already have plans for sleep training. This is awesome and you should totally stick by them but please remember babies haven't read all those baby books. In fact. Burn those baby books because your baby will never fit in to that box no matter how much the midwfie/health visitor tells you they should. You are also not a shit parent if your child doesn't sleep blissfully at 3 months old.
