Emmalushka, my friend who is a nurse is a big advocate of home births. She had twins so had to go to hospital but would have had her baby at home otherwise. She says you get the same team of midwives throughout, don't have to worry about MRSA and that in lots of other countries home births are the norm. I would like a home birth but this is my first and I am 25 mins from hospital so I am going to hospital for this one and probably for subsequent ones. It is very rare, but sometimes things can happen during birth and a doctor is needed immediately. If you are at home there may not be time to get you the help you need. It is very rare, cos mostly they can tell way in advance if you are going to have problems and can get you to hospital, but I wouldn't like to take the chance with my first. You don't know what to expect so you might find it more frightening.

nh101 · 05/03/2007 12:18

This is the situation I was talking about where a doctor is needed: cord prolapse. It seems that in a low-risk birth it is very unlikely (one in 10,000 in this study).

You are less likely to have a forceps delivery or a caesarean with a home birth.

Cord prolapse is one of the emergency situations which give midwives nightmares. Cord presentation occurs when the umbilical cord presents in front of the baby's presenting part (usually its head, unless it is breech). As the head descends, the cord is compressed and this can restrict the baby's oxygen supply. Cord prolapse is the next stage - when the cord protrudes from the uterus in front of the baby, and can be felt in the vagina.

Sometimes a midwife or doctor can push the cord up and out of the way, holding the baby's head up while they do it. However, often an emergency caesarean is needed. If a cord prolapse occurred at home, your midwife would probably ask you to go on all fours, with your head lower than your body and your bottom stuck in the air. This would take the pressure off your cervix and hopefully off the cord. The midwife might keep a hand inside you, holding the baby's head up and off the cord, while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. She may well remain in this position while the ambulance crew transported you to hospital. An interesting sight for the neighbours - but potentially life-saving for your baby.

Cord prolapse is a complication which could be fatal in home or hospital. The National Birthday Trust Fund study of planned home births in the UK reported on the incidence of cord prolapse. In the home and hospital groups totalling 10,695 women, only one cord prolapse occurred, in the home birth group - but no fetal death was reported*. The authors point out that cord prolapse occurs on average once in every 900 deliveries (cord presentation once in every 300), but is much more likely in certain high-risk categories: breech or transverse lie, small babies, polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid). Very few women planning a home birth have pregnancies which fall into these categories.

Hey Ladies,
Just wanted to say good luck. I was due sep 25th 06 but went over till oct 2nd!!
I now have a gorgeous 5mo DS here, its hard to believe I was only 3 mo pg this time last year!

Good Luck and enjoy it

NewDKmum · 05/03/2007 13:19

Hello all,

Just thought I'd come crawling out from under my stone. Have had a rough few weeks with dd being quite unwell with chicken pox and pneumonia and feeling sorry for myself because of the morning sickness.

On a more positive note, pg seems to be progressing well and DH is being a real star sorting all the shopping and cooking etc.

Hopeitwontbebig · 05/03/2007 13:25

Hi ladies, hope you don't mind but I've added myself to this HUGE list .
I'm 11wks 1 day with 3rd baby. Eldest is 10, youngest 7!!

I've had a couple of scans already because I had some spotting at 5 weeks and again at 8 and 9 and a half weeks. Last scan showed what looked like a second empty sac. Baby doing well. Such a worry though the spotting. Can't believe how common it is. I've got a nuchal scan booked for 13th March. Like a lot of women, not offered on NHS, so have opted to have it done in a fetal imagaging centre, they even throw in a DVD!

I'm finding this pregnancy FAR more tough than my other pregnancies. More aches and pains etc.

Sorry for long one!!

Welcome Hopeitwontbe!! Love the name

I am feeling really weird today, mainly because my first scan is tomorrow. I feel like I have a big exam coming up but weirdly don't need to do any preparation for it.... I keep forgetting about the scan while I am busy with my boys and then it suddenly hits me - this time tomorrow I will know if there is actually a baby (or two....or three... ) in there or not!!

In regards to home births, two very good friends of mine have had home births and thought they were the best things ever. However, they didn't have the home births with their first babies, mainly because they didn't know what to expect. But if you feel positive about it and the midwife supports it then go for it - I will do nothing but envy you.....

Hopeitwontbebig · 05/03/2007 16:41

Thanks Canadianmum

Good luck tomorrow for your scan. I know what you mean! Nerve-wrecking stuff huh.

Hi everyone

Has anyone got any advice re travel insurance while pregnant? Im off to Barbados in May for two weeks and will be 20 weeks on way and 22 on way back. Need to get some insurance...

Im still being sick on and off but mainly very very tired. Had some aches and pains in bump region and pelvis recently too which feels like stretching. My bump is very big and im in mat clothes already

Maddison · 05/03/2007 18:35

Oops, completely forgot to add my name onto the list - I blame it on the hormones

Fio - I'm so glad it's not just me with the wind lol

Good luck with the scan tomorrow Canadianmum - I felt a little nervous just before my scan, a bit like I'd done the exam and was getting the results

About homebirths - I don't know anybody who's had one but I have read lots of positive stories on here about them. I'm looking to deliver at the local birthing centre, I don't think I'd like a homebirth incase I woke the DS's, I think seeing me in so much pain would terrify them!! But I think if that's what somebody prefers then they should go for it, afterall, it is such a special time in their lives they should have things their way as much as poss.

Hi EdieMcCredie, I don't know about the travel insurance, when I worked in insurance a few years ago we worked from a guide provided by the insurers so any brokers or insurer will be able to tell you if there would be any endorsements on the policy.

I've been wearing maternity clothes too, but they are still a little big so I've pinched DH's belt.!!

Maddison · 05/03/2007 18:47

I don't know about travel insurance now, that should have read.

TOD · 06/03/2007 09:09

Hi all, I like the rest of ye am having good and bad days too!!!
Am nauseated , bloated and very windy, which can be very embarrassing! Am definately getting a little bump also but still in my old clothes yet...With my DS I wasnt this big until I was 17 weeks+.
I am now 12+3 and have my dating scan next tuesday...am looking forward to it but a little nervous too.
I wont be offered a nuchal scan or any antenatal tests but to be honest that doesnt worry me too much...dont get me wrong I want a healthy and happy baby too but no point in worrying unnecessilarily either.
Good luck to all who have scans and visits due around this time!
Take care xxxxxxxxxxx

Flossam · 06/03/2007 09:12

Edie, when I was pregnant with DS I found insure and go would insure me. I'd recommend you find the best quote you can (I got some for DP on money supermarket on Saturday would recommend their search facility) and give them a ring or send them an email to check about whether you might be covered.

I'm generally feeling quite good, indigestion seems to be taking a rest bite, don't seem to be feeling sick at all anymore. Am still quite tired, but haven't been very feel (dodgy tummy)so it might be down to that? I'm thirteen weeks tomorrow so getting to the stage where I should start to feel wonderful. Hahaha. I'll believe it when it happens!

I too am hoping for a homebirth. Just waiting the results of my bloods first to check I have no antibodies. DP is now perfectly happy for this to happen which is wonderful, so just keeping my fingers crossed about the bloods really!

I've been wondering whether I should pay for a nuchal scan, mainly because it is what I had last time and what I know! And to see if there really is something in there! I don't think we will be though, for one thing DP is off on his stag weekend on Thursday, so time for us is running out really. Roll on the 20 week scan as I am managing to really worry that all may not be ok.

Hope everyone else is beginning to feel better now!!

Holly29 · 06/03/2007 10:02

Edie

Greenbee (John Lewis insurance) will insure you right through almost until the end - have a look on the John Lewis website. They are really good. x

nh101 · 06/03/2007 12:04

Edie, I have a normal 12-month travel policy bought before I got PG and it insures me right up to last eight weeks. I bought it from insuresupermarket.com and went to Egypt last month, rang the company beforehand and they said any treatment I needed related to the PG would be covered.

So don't look for a specialist policy as you may pay more when you don't need to.

nh101 · 06/03/2007 12:05

I dreamt I had a homebirth last night! And then I tried to breastfeed and the baby bit me. That is a recurring one actually although after the initial shock I always find I can breastfeed OK. Fingers crossed!

Hopeitwontbebig · 06/03/2007 14:55

Hi all, I went for my blood test today so that the results would be ready when I had my Nuchal scan next Tuesday and the lovely lady suggested scanning me there and then to see if baby was big enough to do Nuchal today. It was!!

Amazing seeing the baby moving about on the screen, we've even been given a DVD. I have to wait for the full results later today.

I've got a couple of lobes or cysts on my placenta, they look like big bubbles. The lady who scanned me at 9 weeks said that not all placentas form nice and smoothly. Anyone else experienced this? Lady who scanned today said sometimes this can cause a slow down of growth after 28 weeks.

Any comments????

atalantis · 06/03/2007 14:59

What a lovely surprise for you to have a scan when you weren't expecting it. I've no experience of lobes/cycts on the placenta, but I'm sure someone here has!

Hopeitwontbebig · 06/03/2007 15:02

Thanks atalantis

I hope someone here has heard of it. Never had this with my two previous pregnancies.

Holly29 · 06/03/2007 15:51

How lovely to have a scan when you weren't expecting it! I am going to have my scan next Tuesday too and was going to bond with you over it, but am so happy you got it early. Would pay large amounts of cash to get mine early at this point... am so excited. Good luck with the results - am sure it will be fine. If you want more people to respond to the bubbles thing, then post on the main board - it gets more replies.
Take care. How was it seening the baby on the screen? I can't wait!

Nicki10 · 06/03/2007 16:10

Hi All

I haven't suffered from morning sickness for the last 2 weeks until yesterday when just as I was walking out of the house it hit me!. The tiredness also seems to have come back.

I am also finding at the moment that I am having pulling pains in my lower abdomen especially if I stand up too quickly, it can be crippling. Is anyone else finding this?.

I have my nuchal scan booked for next Monday so I can't wait to see the baby again. Has anyone found out the sex at their nuchal scans? I have heard that you can now?

Is anyone going to the baby show this weekend at Excel? We are going on Saturday and I can't wait.

emalushka · 06/03/2007 16:13

Thank you so much for your advice about home births. Much appreciated. I'll have to wait for blood test results and scans etc, but if everything is okay, I think I'll go for a home birth. If anything goes wrong, I'm only 10 mins from the hospital. I've never really liked hospitals.

Cysts on ovaries - probably no use whatsoever, but I did read about someone this happened to in Pregnancy and Birth magazine. She had to have regular check ups and more care than normal, but everything was fine in the end. If I remember correctly, she was induced a couple of weeks early.

Take care everyone and enjoy being pregnant. xx
