On the subject of cheese....I used to work in a cheese shop selling mostly unpasteurised farmhouse cheeses and our advice to customers (based on the boss's wife's research..she was a was a nurse) was it's not a case of pasteurised v. unpasteurised, but rather soft v hard cheeses. Unpasteurised hard cheeses (like cheddar and parmesan) are perfectly OK cos the milk is cooked as part of the process which kills off any harmful bacteria. Soft, mould ripened cheeses like brie and camembert and blues should be avoided whether pasteurised or not as the mould ripening process can harbour harmful bacteria like listeria, but mozarella is OK as long as its pasteurised as it isn't mould ripened. Sheep and goat's milk should also be avoided whether pasteurised or not as they carry toxoplasmosis which can get into the milk. Hope I haven't worried anyone unduly, but the misinformation out there used to be one of our bug-bears in the shop. Mind you, I'm sure several million french women would disagree about what is and isn't safe....but I personally wouldn't take the risk. Sorry...didn't mean to preach but this is an issue that I feel quite strongly about.

mytwocents · 14/02/2007 14:05

Must be having a girl then, I am looking unlovely indeed....
Thats a lovely sling H&A , am unsure 'bout them as newbie too but looks like we may not be moving now so could be alternative to lugging buggy/pram up steps......
Very jealous of building work actually, had planned to move to little house and refurb but falling through as I write so staying put most likely....sob.....sob...
Yes CHEESE!!!!!!!!!! Feel for you cocobear, I lived in the middle east and real cheese is very hard to find, can you gat anyone to send from Beirut? very of trip to rome sputnik, love italian cheese.
I too found a dark hair on my chin!!!!!!!! Much alarm, esp as am blond.
lol at 'nesting' I spent sunday clearing kitchen cupboards, threw away food from 2001 !!
Just wanted to share another weird dream last night ; had a lovely little baby but kept leaving her places and forgetting about her! Every time I went to find her she'd rolled under something, sofa, table, car! Also when finally had hold of her she had one bright blue eye and one pale green eye, very weird as dp and I both have dark brown eyes.....anyone into interpreting dreams?
Is this a premonition that I'll be a terribe mother or perhaps a warning....

mytwocents · 14/02/2007 14:09

Thanks for info daisy, Ive had very mixed warnings, french relatives who say all is fine and someone told me not to eat ementhal too which doc said was fine........I have to admit I did have brie on toast the other day but grilled for ages, really looking forward to some gorgonzola and a large glass of something italian some time in June.........

sputnik · 14/02/2007 14:31

Interesting about the cheese Daisybump. No one mentions listeria here in Italy, but I have been cautious anyway, I admit to eating some stilton in the UK at xmas, but otherwise have only eaten soft or blue cheeses cooked, presumably that's ok? But you have me worried about the toxo, I eat tonnes of feta, and lots of the cheese here is sheep's cheese.

hollyandalice · 14/02/2007 14:33

Oooo interesting Daisy, maybe I'll stop stuffing brie into my mouth likes it's going out of fashion!! Do you know if cooking it gets rid of the bacteria (sense of desperation setting in)?!

On the subject of girl v boy pregnancies, I definately am having a better pg this time round (had girl last time, now am having a boy). Last time I was sick all day every day for weeks and then sick occasionally all the way through, this time I've only been sick in the mornings and it's stopped now. Also last ime my hair was falling out in clumps, I broke 2 hoovers and kept blocking the drain. My hair was visibly thinner and I looked awful, maybe it was the stress from all the sickness + working full time. So I suppose I do look better this time round!

Mytwocents- you are not the only one having disturbing dreams. The other night I dreamt my dd was squished and killed by a boa constrictor, it was horrible!!

sputnik · 14/02/2007 14:36

Oh and don't worry about the bad-mother dreams My2cents, I had them all the time last time, some of them pretty horrible. Thought I'd got away with it this time round but had the first one the other night. We lost the baby on the beach as we were too busy watching what DD was up to.
Needless to say I am actually the world's greatest mother .

Taffindra · 14/02/2007 14:39

I'm not having DREAMS about being a bad mother, I already am one! Left DS twice this weekend in a v.packed ikea sitting in the trolley whilst I wondered round the lights department in a daze. DH kept coming up to me saying 'where is he???' in a panic. I really am not fit to be in charge of a child, it scares me.
On the subject of WAXING....is it really more painful when you're pregnant? Am going for a brazilian this weekend pre-holiday, and am now v.scared (mind you, can't be worse than childbirth, surely?) Am also ashamed about lenght and breadth of hair, its astonishing - is there a length at which its too long to wax? If so, I'm there now! Am anticipating much shame and embarrassment, and screams of horror from the wax-er.

sputnik · 14/02/2007 15:27

Taffindra, that's not you, it's Ikea does funny things to your head.

notsolilKel · 14/02/2007 16:00

heelllloooo ladies
Funny I'm the opposite of you H&A... last pg with DS (while working FT) was absolutely horrible. Sick all the way through save 2 weeks, prenatal depression, etc etc and now it's a girl and I'm literally barely noticing the pg bit (apart from gi-normous bump and insatiable appetite). I'm certain that working full-time has much more to do with a negative pg than baby's gender....

Why oh why did you have to mention cheese...(sigh). I've a food shop directly across the street from me. It's just too easy...

Still on the hunt for the perfect bouncy chair. Anyone care to help? I've an impossible list of demands, including:

-colour: must not be entirely pink or blue, prefer neutrals
-padding: must have nice fabric cover capable of removal
-weight: lightweight
-adjustability - prefer this
-handles - prefer this too
-collapsible sun shade - would be nice for summer
-toy bar - toys must be removable.

I'm most concerned about weight. With DS we had a hand-me-down rocker chair style like this and it felt like lifting the Titanic when attempting to shift him to another room!!

Problem is, the lighter weight ones see here don't seem to ever come with reclining adjustability, which I really want. Also never with carrying handles. GAHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. How do you move them around?

There is the Babybjorn Sitter which is light and adjustable, but no handles. And in black only (blech). And is £60. Yikes.

Soooo finally, this one
might be good but GAWD is it gimmicky or what? I'd hate to accidentally electrocute the poor thing whilst remotely changing the vibration speed (gulp!)

Taffin - for the wax, trim the length at home first with either scissors or beard trimmer (the kind with a guard). A half hour before the wax take 2 paracetemol. And drink no caffeine (no chocolate either) the 12 hours before. It might help...

hollyandalice · 14/02/2007 16:39

I think tiredness has a lot to do with feeling crappy. This time I am catching a nap during the day when dd does (is everyone else doing this or is it just me being lazy!!). I feel much better for it!

Mmmm lilkel I don't think such a bouncer exists!!! I have bought and sold numerous ones from ebay and I've only encountered one with such specifications and it's not made any more!! It is from Mothercare and is in my garage (it's so good I kept it for no. 2!!). They do a similar one though I'm not sure how lightweight it would be, also it's blue so not great for a girl!! The best rocker I've had has been the Sereno from Mamas & Papas, it's hideously expensive, but it's really cushioned and soft, has handles, is adjustable and is not too heavy, also you can put the covers in the washing machine. It doesn't come with a toy arch, but you can buy them seperately. It goes wthout saying that you can get them a lot cheaper from ebay!!

hollyandalice · 14/02/2007 16:40

Has anyone received any valentines love yet? I haven't , but then I never do (dp doesn't believe in it).

notsolilKel · 14/02/2007 17:44

H&A you are the queen of shopping I like the look of the Sereno, and OMG it is bloody expensive, but as you said, there are loads online (and in more colours too!!) I even found one in pink check!! check it out here!

So when the sonographer says, they're 90% sure it's a girl, do you think it's pretty much certain? Certain enough to buy a pink checked rocker/bouncer??

Sending lovely thoughts to everyone ....(((HUGS)))

bumperlicious · 14/02/2007 17:55

Wow, we'rw dead lucky. We have one of those Sereno chairs lent to us by my niece, didn't realise how expensive they were.
Hope you are all well. God I feel like an old women. I keep saying 'oof' every time I get up out of a chair, in the manner of my 77 year old MIL!My hips are killing me, and it's still early days!
No valentine's for me, but DH and I don't do really do it, though I did get some flowers on Monday, but they were just because Dh loves me! (his words not mine!). Right, I've had a long day at work, I'm off to make a cup of tea.

Ooof

hollyandalice · 14/02/2007 18:16

Wow! I got a dozen red roses and a card!! I feel really guilty now coz I didn't get him anything!

I had the pink Sereno, it was fab! Didn't buy it from new though, dp would have killed me!! Lilkel I took the sonographer telling me dd is a girl to be set in stone (a bit silly really. I went to hospital with 4 pink sleepsuits, pink vests, blankets etc. If she had been a boy I'd have been screwed!!). I think the way to look at it is if you buy something from ebay and it's not right you can just resell it and you are no worse off. If you want the toy arch for the pink Sereno the one they sell now for the Nostalgia Sereno has pink on it so will match ok.

hollyandalice · 14/02/2007 18:21

Lol at the oofing bump!! I definately make some old lady sounds when moving, bending down, getting up etc. Pretty much all the time. Have loads of phlegm too so have horrid hacking cough in manner of old lady who has been smoking for 67 years!! I'm so beautiful, no wonder dp bought me roses!

notsolilKel · 15/02/2007 09:27

Good morning ladies. Been up since 5:30 again with cranky DS. Please, please teeth come soon...

I've gone and done it now. Begged MN Towers to get us a discount on our beloved Cath. Just don't tell DH or he'll lock my credit cards away... see here for request

Have a brilliant day!

OP posts:
hollyandalice · 15/02/2007 09:52

LOL !!! Discount would be received warmly!!

justbeme · 15/02/2007 10:08

Good luck with getting the discount - You lot seem to be Shopperholics anon!! Lol!
Also had to laugh at the old lady noises - I think im turning into my horrible 75 yr old "MIL" - Yesterday I banned myself from slating anybody (she's never got a good word to say about anybody) - me thinks Im turning into a miserable old moo!!
Oh and my 11yr old DD keeps saying she cant wait 4 mths for this baby to arrive and "Can't you hurry up?"!

Taffindra · 15/02/2007 11:13

Thanks for advice re:waxing. Problem is can't actually SEE said area due to huge bump, so triming is going to be v.tricky and possibly dangerous. Funny about Coffee, I though the opposite was true - I was going to have a large Latte before I went in - glad you put me straight. I might ask if they do epidurals, they are the best.

K1K2 · 15/02/2007 11:46

Thanks all for the condolences re: Nan and a happy belated VD to you all , hope you girls all got your loving treats yesterday , whatever they were ! I am joining the ranks of Sputnik, KD Racey and Taffindra as I am in the throws of building work, 6 weeks in to a major build , total mess outside and inside of the house but it'll be worth it and extra space to move around in time for no. 2.. Funnily enough our builder's called Bob too! Thanks for the cheese tips H & A and DB - does that mean no brie is safe ( unless you cook it)? When H &A mentioned the pie d'Angloys I thought right, straight to our nearest deli for that , as I have been gazing wistfully at soft cheeses so long now - went out for a pre- Valentines meal to a Greek restaurant on Tues w/ DH and stoically spurned the feta based dishes. And I really love feta and goats cheese. It was one of the first things I pigged out on after having no 1 child.

On a totally different subject - "pubic topiary" - how do you "Brazillian" girls, stop the itching down there? I only have to trim and a shave a little and I am scratching it for days afterwards , much to DH's disgust! Not that I 'll be able to see down there much longer with the bump to do it! And speaking of bumps , I have a great tip to fellow MN's whose budget might not stretch to CK stuff. At the moment , smock tops seem to be in vogue, ( whether your pregant or not) according to, ahem, Primark - I am not proud! Anyway, I went mad in the shop the other day and bought 6 tops for a total of £40.00 . It's the first time I have ventured into the realm of the smock top and I must say there are some very nice ones there, better than some of the one's in the special maternity section of Mothercare and Dorothy Perkins, check it out! Well, I'm off work another day for the half term holidays - it's a sunny day too here where I live - must make the most of it and log off now. Take Care all x

hollyandalice · 15/02/2007 11:55

Just found a great link\www.eatwell.gov.uk/asksam/agesandstages/pregnancy/?view=printerfriendly#A219900\link} on eating cheese in pregnancy on a government website. You were right Daisy about the pasturised soft cheese not being ok either. It also says that it's all ok (even blue cheese) if it's cooked!! Hooray! I don't even like raw brie so I'm going to make myself a brie toastie right away! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !!

hollyandalice · 15/02/2007 11:56

Oops having a pregnancy brain moment!! link

notsolilKel · 15/02/2007 13:51

mmmmmm brie toastie mmmmmmmm

if only we could solve all pg-banned foods by toastie-ing them. Like sushi.

Girls our beloved Cath is getting slammed on my request thread. I'm so tempted to retort but am doing best to zip mouth shut...

OP posts:
sputnik · 15/02/2007 14:19

Not going to say anything about Cath.
