Congrats on the good news, Mejse

Leg cramps, OMG, they kill me. Drinking loads of water helps, but then that means I have to get up for the loo all the time!

My little one seems to be moving quite a lot less these days, guess he's more cramped in there.

How many of you know if your babies have already turned and have their heads down? at my 28 wk appointmen, which was last week at 29 weeks, the mw said he still had is head up but it was okay for now. but then i read they should have turned by 32 weeks or you would begin to worry about breech...

Thanks stubble and londonmama for flexible working request advice. I'm too scared to do it now though I know it's sensible. I have a 1-2-1 tomorrow and wondering if I'll be brave enough to air it gently. He's a great manager (very unusual in my company!) so hoping he'd take it well enough and be glad I've raised it now.

Cramps - omg, I had awful awful spasms last night, every time it happens it's so bad I want someone to come along with an axe and get rid of my leg! I know what helps (flexing toes downwards) and it does go eventually. But sympathies to all those with the same.

London mine is still sitting up apparently :) hoping he'll fancy changing his view of the world soon.

Welcome queen sorry to hear about the loss of your eldest and that your pregnancy hasn't been very straight forward. Flowers Are you being induced then? X

Report

Hi ladies, not being induced, my babies like to come early, she's head down and fully engaged, had a tear in my waters which thankfully healed. Starting the steroids tomorrow so hopefully she will be fine when she's born.

Congratulations to all other ladies too, how is everyone? Xx

Mine is still fairly active but the movement feels a bit different (31+4), less kicky more swooshy. She says as she just got a massive boot!

NCT tonight. 'Homework' was to say how different people might be affected by the new baby; friends, family, colleagues etc. The card we picked was 'the family pet'. I currently have one cat sat purring away by my shoulder and another rubbing around my feet. They are going to be traumatised 😔 DP's cat (technically they are all mine but he is the chosen lap!) will be fine I think, as long as she gets the lap, but one of them is going to be so jealous of something else taking my attention from her.

Finally saw the physio this afternoon. After lots of tears from me she finally agreed to give me crutches so I can leave the house without being in so much pain I'm trying not to cry within 5 minutes.
I was basically told not to expect it to get any better. All the advice and exercises they gave me to try I've already been doing for the last 3-4 weeks. When I said it was really painful to walk they gave me strategies to avoid walking (supermarket shop online, drive to a field where you can throw a ball for the dog instead of walk him, get someone else to do the hoovering).
I've still got 2 months to go. Not walking pretty much means being housebound for the next two months and a pretty miserable maternity leave!!
At least with the crutches I can now get around without the same level of pain.
They also said I should speak to work about working from home as much as possible in my last two weeks as long days at my desk are likely to be making it worse. At least at home I can sit on a gym ball whilst on my laptop, and get up and stretch properly every twenty minutes etc.

Welcome queenc, sorry for the loss of your eldest boy Flowers Hopefully this baby will stay in a bit longer. There is at least one other lady on this thread who's had steroids for possible early labour.

londonmama I think first babies are more likely to stay put once they get comfy than subsequent babies, as there's less space. My baby had been head down for ages but I'm not so sure now, the kicks feel different and my bump is much higher.

barking sorry to hear you're suffering so much. The pain in my hips and ribs has really stepped up as well. I wore a support belt today which helped the hip, but made the rib pain worse. I've been in bed since 5.30 as it's the only vaguely comfortable way of being. If it keeps going I think I'll have to ask for some stronger painkillers, I've been close to tears with the pain. Simple things like unloading and loading the dishwasher is agony, as is putting my daughter in the buggy. At least I've only got 7 weeks to go.

Welcome queenc. I hope your baby holds on a bit longer!

barking, bad SPD is terrible. Yours sounds like mine was last time and it was very restrictive. I ended up trying a chiropractor, not sure if it helped or not. Mine didn't get any worse after this point though and actually eased up a bit after DS's head engaged. My physio this time told me that the exercises don't help that much and they're largely about relaxing you! She also said the Dutch don't do crutches for SPD any more as they don't think they help (lucky for me really as I've got carpal tunnel and couldn't use them).

I had my kraamzorg introductory visit today, we get the full package of 8 days, 6 hours a day! It sounds great but it was made very clear we will be expected to do things the Dutch way! They're sending me extra bed feet to raise the height of the bed. I've got to get two kruiks, which I'm a bit worried about. They're essentially baby bed warmers and you leave them in the bed with the baby. Does that sound safe? I'm worried about the baby overheating, especially since they don't expect you to be in the same room as the baby for naps.

Report
barkingtreefrog · 06/10/2016 21:45

Solomon I'd have to disagree with that physio, without crutches I can't walk, with crutches I can!! Not saying it helps improve the actual spd pain, but it means I can take enough weight off the area to leave the house, which is all I wanted!
I'm seeing a chiropractor as well. Not seen an improvement yet but going to keep at it and hope it makes a difference.

I think possibly getting a room thermometer might help you get a sense of whether it's the right temperature or not? You could put it right by the crib and see if the temperature matches up with the advice over here?

Report
DartmoorDoughnut · 06/10/2016 21:48

DS's monitor is currently telling me it's 15, I don't want to put my heating on yet darn it!

Report
SolomanDaisy · 06/10/2016 23:00

Apparently the theory on crutches is that they feel like they're helping at the time but they do longer term damage. They were the only way I could walk last time too, but then it did take a while to settle down after the birth.

I'll definitely have room thermometers, I still use one for DS! The kruik instructions tell you to take the baby's temperature and if it's below a certain point you use two kruik and a hat! I can't imagine taking the baby's temp before every nap.

Report
Bumplovin · 06/10/2016 23:12

Im a physio myself and with severe spd Id say def crutches can help. Ive got it myself and I don't need crutches but walking is very sore. If it got really bad taking some weight off is a good idea. I see an osteopath and that I believe is keeping it from getting worse at the moment

Report
Bumplovin · 06/10/2016 23:17

But I should add you shouldn't stop moving, moving is generally better for reducing pain it's just avoiding movements that aggravate it

Wow, another thread!

I've had interesting couple of days. The boy decided to take a day off and stopped moving yesterday morning, tried poking him, had my usual coffee, chocolate, cold water. Lasted at work until 11am before going to the hospital nearby. All is good, they did heart monitoring etc. My regular midwife send me off for a scan today just to be on the safe, I was quite impressed! It was great as I didn't think I'd have another scan. The boy is measuring spot on, is estimated to weigh over 4lb at 31+4 and is head down. I thought he was anyway, my bladder is under permanent pressure! All the midwives were lovely and reassuring that I did the right thing by coming in.

I'm definitely finding the last bit of the pregnancy more stressful that the early days!

Report
barkingtreefrog · 07/10/2016 06:03

bump exactly, I know from past sports injuries that the worst thing you can do is become immobile, so it made no sense to me. I only intend to use them for walking further distances, the hospital was a good example as by the time I found a parking space I was miles away and it was so painful by the time I got to the appointment. I won't use them around the house or moving around at work, so I'll still be working all the muscles, the only time I'll use them is for activity I wouldn't otherwise be able to do at all. We're going to see friends this weekend and we've got a dog walk with a pub stop planned. Until I got the crutches I'd have had to wait in the car, so they will make a huge difference to my quality of life!!!

Must have been scary Azure, glad everything's ok!

Barking, I hate getting out of the car, it's one of the hardest things to do! I used to have an exercise ball at work which I alternated with my office chair, which helped a bit during the day. I'm glad I'm not at the stage of needing crutches this time, the Dutch are not into compromise on these things (as
my previous requests to take baby aspirin and have the flu injection have proved to me...)

Report
Popskipiekin · 07/10/2016 09:42

Barking so sorry to hear you're in so much pain but don't write off your entire maternity leave - isn't the general experience that it does get much much better after you've given birth? I had excruciating SPD last time and was still getting around with a crutch immediately post birth but walking normally and pain free (bit stiff maybe) by 2 weeks after. I work at a hospital (in a non clinical role) so I managed to speak to a pelvic consultant who sees lots of ladies at the more severe end of things and he said categorically that you'd have to be extremely unlucky for it to last more than 2 months after birth (and he had never seen anyone with pain after 3 months). I know - because I've seen mumnset threads! - that there are people out there who do suffer longer than this, but they must be the real and very unfortunate exceptions. Very much hope you can find relief. You absolutely should look at working from home - that's what I did last time. Do you have occupational health? our OH lady was great and explicitly told my manager that they either lose me entirely or let me work from home. They chose wfh :) (because they hadn't found a replacement yet!)

Will leave the kicks count site here for anyone who is unsure - it's always good for a refresh www.kickscount.org.uk/mums/your-babys-movements/

No leg cramps last night, had drunk a lot of water yesterday and scoffed ready salted crisp - so it appears to have worked!
