Topmammy I found out I was on iron last week and am now on the tablets. Been taking them since Friday night. Anyone know how long they take to kick in?

gumbootsandjandals · 09/10/2016 08:46

Sorry you had another crap night SB. I definitely find if I've slept badly it makes me feel very blah the next day (therefore "blah" is my default setting these days!). I can't offer any suggestions but can only reassure you that pregnancy can be damn hard going. Some people absolutely sail through, and some get caught on all the sand bars.

Piano I've done several NCT sales. You need to be early to get the big stuff, and being a member gets you in the door that much earlier. I have seen some fab quality items for sale. Theres always lots of baby sleeping bags. I mainly buy books and toys tbh although have got some nice maternity stuff.

Thanks for the tips on jeans ladies. I'll get onto that today Smile

gumbootsandjandals · 09/10/2016 08:50

SB I am also anaemic but I can't take iron tabs because they make me horrendously constipated. They do take a while to work because you need to rebuild your stores. I would think within a couple of weeks you should feel better, depending how low your Hb is.

I take Spatone but it's actually not that high in iron. Better than nothing though.

SBSparkles · 09/10/2016 08:51

Gumboots to be fair a lot of it was DH moving around all night and keeping me awake! I'm kicking him out into the spare room tonight!! Smile

twocatsandatoddler · 09/10/2016 09:28

evergreen check out eBay for maternity coats. I've been looking on there and there are loads for £5-10 where people have hardly worn them. I have a coat in a size too big that I wore last time that is good for now, but I doubt it'll still do up in December/January. Last time I was due in early December so didn't need a proper maternity coat as it wasn't too cold yet so I could make do with the larger coat worn open with a big scarf, but I might need one this time.

sleepyMe12 · 09/10/2016 09:43

Gumboots spatone is not as high in iron but because it is a more soluble form it's is easier absorbed by the body therefore more likely to have better results, that and you don't get the horrible constipation like tablets.

I've been using spatone since my last pregnancy (during breastfeeding etc) and I recommend adding a little apple juice to it as the vitamin C helps absorbsion and works out alot cheaper then buying with the vitamin C added.

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 09/10/2016 11:42

Eek, it's all starting to feel a bit real now - and I'm flipping 22 weeks.

DH and I have started making plans and lists, discussing names and are going to haul all the old baby stuff down from the loft this afternoon. I even bought my first new baby sleep suit!

I'm undecided about a new mattress for the cotbed we have. I'm definitely getting a new one for the Moses basket. DS 3.5 is still using the cotbed until we get the spare room decorated for him, and we bought a pretty expensive decent quality one. It's in pretty good nick, with a plastic cover and a removable washable top. I think he's only been sick in bed 2/3 times and one wee accident.
It's got a tiny little rip where the zipper of the topper has come away slightly (about 2cm).
If we were to get a new one, I would want a decent one again, but they can be quite expensive.

Those with older DCs, are you getting new mattresses?

sleepyMe12 · 09/10/2016 12:22

The new baby will be using his brothers old stuff, but only 16 months in between so hasn't been in storage etc.
I think if your happy with how it is go for it you know how it has been looked after etc

kikisdelivery · 09/10/2016 13:05

I think I might've caught up! But apologies if I've missed any key stuff... I tried to keep up on hols but on the apartment wifi which was a bit rubbish!

I can second the vote for Next maternity trousers, for sure - not bought their jeans but I did get some work black trousers and they've been wonderful. I might get another pair!

We are still horribly unorganised - I still have literally nothing bought aside from the pram from months ago, and some baby clothes via a local selling group. My parents are both passed away and I'm an only child, but my OH's parents have been lovely and sent us a cheque (we weren't expecting any money or anything, so it's really kind) because they want to contribute to us buying some bits. We'll definitely be able to get some decent items with what they've sent, so now we're back from hols I need to pay it in and then check out different things.

I think I've decided for sure on a moses basket instead of a co-sleeper, for our personal set up with the available space/way our bedroom is laid out. I mean, of course, that may well change!! I've been indecisive this far along, so what's a little more!

On a practical note - are any of you ladies still feeling very low movement? I swear to god this boy is using my bladder and cervix as a football some days Hmm and there've been one or two times where he's booted in a certain area which has either felt like he's going to pop out, or like I need to pee immediately - usually two minutes after having already gone to the loo! I did a quick google and apparently it is usually the baby jabbing on to the bladder or nerves nearby - so it feels like it travels down the entire lady-areas and can feel a little scary/uncomfortable!

Got my whooping cough jab tomorrow... urgh. I'm not looking forward to it from what I've heard, but it's got to be done I guess!

gumbootsandjandals · 09/10/2016 13:25

sleepy I have taken Spatone in all 3 pregnancies. It maintains my iron levels but does not increase them. The only evidence that it is better absorbed seems to be from the manufacturers themselves, but I get that some people will respond better than others.

I am also taking pg multivitamins 3x a week to try and improve my iron levels but so far they remain static. I am overdue a repeat blood test but will hopefully get that done on Tues. If my Hb is still low I will discuss further options with GP the following week (have booked in to discuss constipation management; iron supplementation seems to fit well with that!).

Oh the joys...

topmammy · 09/10/2016 15:25

if my DD barely slept on her cotbed mattress but even if she did I would still use it again. Ours has the top layer that zips off the top too which I'll wash. I read somewhere if sibling's use the same mattress it's safer for some reason.

Anyone else find choosing boys names harder than girls? I had a girl's name all ready but finding picking a boy's name much harder!

kikisdelivery · 09/10/2016 15:48

topmammy yes on the names! I had/have a boy's name I love - well, which both me and the OH love and jokingly/drunkenly picked about a year ago, were we to ever have a son. It's quite a classic name, nowt off the wall, but now we've made a boy and seen him on screen the name suddenly has doubts! I have no idea why, but suddenly it might not fit any more! We both still really love it, but we don't know if we love it for our boy, if that makes sense!

I'm not really one for the current popular boys names either - I just looked at the top 10 list on one site and don't like any of them! Hmmm.... Hmm

sleepyMe12 · 09/10/2016 16:27

We have the same problem with boys names!
We already had sooo many disagreements naming our boy last year (Peter)
This year is even worse.

SBSparkles · 09/10/2016 16:42

Kiki I totally know what you mean! I think mine is using my ladder as a trampoline! When I stand up I get a sudden massive urge to pee desperately!! I get fluttery feelings in my cervix as well.
Lots of people having whooping cough vaccination early! Docs told me you have to be later in pregnancy otherwise it doesn't pass onto your baby? Funny how different docs say different things!

SBSparkles · 09/10/2016 16:47

Topmammy yes we found it really hard picking a boys name!! We disagreed on every name except one!!

kikisdelivery · 09/10/2016 16:55

Sparkles, without wishing to sound too creepy/mental, I'm glad your cervix feels the same as mine! I've been getting these weird fluttery / vibration sensations sometimes, which apparently is all related to the baby bouncing around really low/kicking near the bladder area. It's good to hear I'm not the only one - though I also feel your discomfort! Grin

SpinALittleFaster · 09/10/2016 17:14

sparkles the advice has changed recently and it's now something like 16 weeks on rather than 28. I was surprised that it had changed in the last 2 years given the reasons for 3rd trimester vaccination before. It may be that your gp isn't aware of the updated advice but midwife and consultant should be.

Evergreen17 · 09/10/2016 17:20

Sparkles are you taking your vits? And extra iron? Ok just read your update. It will take a few days/weeks to kick in Smile
I take pregnacare, calcium and magnesium (freaked out about baby stealing my calcium), extra iron, extra vitD (I had deficiency before)

I am feeling pretty well, lots of energy but I am on shorter hours at work Grin
Maybe you are coming down with something? Or maybe just the bubba. We are all different it seems Smile

Gunboots you need to get yourself an iron fish Smile great for iron and not a tablet.
Thanks twocats. I will keep checking on ebay. Hard without knowing sizes though. So annoying everything maternity is on line!
Kikis my whooping cough vac was absolutely fine so dont go in fear
Sparkles I had mine after the 20 week scan, recommended at my surgery from then. And the flu one Smile
Boy names Hmm no idea either!!!!!!!! Yes I agree it is harder

LondonGirl83 · 09/10/2016 18:38

SBS the official NHS advice is the ideal time to have the whopping cough vaccine is between 20 and 28 weeks. Later than that it is less effective and before then is also not advised. Within that 8 week window there doesn't appear to be any distinction. I had mine around 21 weeks.

Sparkles I had a boy name DH and I love and will definitely use if we have a boy in future. We have 3 girls names we like on the shortlist. Its been harder though as I don't love any of the girls names as much as I love the boys name we have!

I have finally made a short list of pretty much everything we want. This will help us be more focused at the baby show etc! Still to pick a baby monitor, diaper bag and a few other bits but I'm leaving that to DH as I've run out of time.

I've looked to see how much we still need to spend and its £££! We are virtually done decorating the nursery and have virtually all the baby clothes we need for the first 3 months but haven't bought anything else for the baby. I need nursing bras and nursing tops as well but I think I'll ask for that for Christmas this year. I'm still in normal clothes and bras and I'm going to try to stick it out if I can without getting much maternity clothes.

Mysterycat23 · 09/10/2016 20:48

Ever try a wrap coat with waterfall fronts, luckily the new one I got last year is this style so can carry on wearing it this year and just need a bigger belt to wrap it over bump Grin

topmammy · 09/10/2016 20:54

Glad it's not just me finding choosing a boys name tricky!
We did have a boys name from last time but like you kiki we're not as keen now! Hmm

DH is going to make a start on painting the nursery this week. We're reusing DD's cot and chest of drawers so it shouldn't take too long to sort out. I will be on the look out for accessories like pictures/bunting to finish the room off soon. We're keeping it simple with white walls wI think 2 opposite walls in baby blue and blue/grey/white accessories.

I am planning on buying a Ewan the sheep soon too to play to bump. Some people I know have done this and it has soothed baby after birth too. Worth a try! Anyone else a Ewan fan?

gumbootsandjandals · 09/10/2016 21:29

Ever I looked at your iron fish last time you recommended it. Am not sure how you would use it with every type of meal?

We are also struggling with boys names. I have 4 so far on my list. DH not really in the frame of mind to discuss them so it's up to me to come up with a shortlist. Girls names we have a few from last time. 3yo DD has also thrown some ideas into the pot.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 09/10/2016 21:31

ifatfirst we will be using the same matress on the toddler bed as I've used with both my girls. Its got a.waterproof zip.around cover and is in fab condition so really see no need to buy new

Evergreen17 · 09/10/2016 21:37

Sounds good mystery and when I wear the bubba he can go under my coat too Smile
