Morning folks

Myfairone, the taughtness could be Braxton Hicks if you don't feel it all the time. I've had a couple already. On the otherhand your normally soft belly (well mine is since dd) becomes much firmer as the uterus grows and fills with placenta baby water etc.

Miaou · 05/03/2007 13:52

Cyee, Nika has said more or less what I would say re. reusables! I started off with 12 totsbots then added 10 more kushies basics. The kushies I got for a song off ebay and they don't really hold a lot, but they were good when ds was tiny and needed changing several times a day. I had a dryer and could not have managed on so few nappies (ie the original 12) without one; if you haven't got a dryer I would say you need at least 16 to start with (and will need to do a wash every day).

WRT poo, when they are tiny, the poos are pretty liquid anyway (particularly if they are breastfed; bottlefed poos are more solid and a lot more stinky!!), so you will need to change the whole nappy each time. As they move onto solids though, washables (with fleece liners) move into their own, as if you see your dc going red in the face and concentrating, you can whip out the fleece liner (with poo) and replace, leaving original nappy on. Did it just this morning !

I also think that washable liners are better than the disposable ones, as you can just shove the whole lot in the wash, rather than having to separate out the liner. Also they are a BIG no-no if you have an older sewage system - they are called flushable but really they aren't! They are notorious for blocking up sewage pipes as they take forever to biodegrade; when I used them I ended up bagging and binning them, which seemed to defeat the object really. Ditto washable wipes - just throw them all in the wash rather than worrying about them blocking the loo or stinking up your bin. HTH!

Cyee, just thought I'd also recommend Motherease one size reusables - I've used them on my 2nd and 3rd and they are still as good as new. Will use them for no 4 too. Only problem is they are a bit big on newborns. I might try using muslins for the early weeks because it'll be warm (hopefully) and they'll dry fast. Also, Sandys are good but come in sizes so ultimately more pricey as you have to buy new ones every so often when baby outgrows a size. The Nappy Ladys website is great.

Cyee · 05/03/2007 14:35

Thanks so much for the nappy advice - it's fantastic. Have got some totsbots and wraps and fleece liners and biodegradeable liners and nappy nippas and and and and...

I'm thinking that the best way forward is to spend so much on the gear that I find it tough to use disposables. I'm really committed to trying and think that in the summer and while on mat leave I really should give it a good go.

Loving all the poo talk.... I really don't know what I've let myself in for do I?!!!

Hello everyone

Apologies for being so rubbish at posting regularly. I do try to keep up honestly! Glad to hear things are going well, and that we are all getting past the half way mark. It is lovely to see the baby at the scan.

Well, we had our scan at the end of Feb and all seems good which was lovely and reassuring. We are having a boy, which means I will have boy, girl, boy! There's definitely a pattern emerging. Think he will be into football like his older brother, lots of movements and kicks - in my opinion this is the best part of being pregnant.

Good luck to all those who are having or about to have scans. Take care xxx

Myfairone · 05/03/2007 16:33

Thanks for all the replies to my 'low kicks' post. Most reassuring! I have my 20 week scan on Tuesday 13th so that should settle my mind some. I cant remember who it was that said shes not happy unless she's worried about something! Well thats me too!

Twoplusone - Sorry to hear about your Mum's friend. Thats awfully young and very sad. I hope that you manage to offer the support your Mum needs right now.

I hope that everyone is feeling fine and that MS is a thing of the past! Mine seems to rear its head if I dont eat every 2 hours! Hey ho!

Big hugs to all.

cupcakesgalore · 05/03/2007 19:19

Good for you Cyee. Babies look really cute in reusables - esp. in the summer when they might just be in a t-shirt and nappy. DD1 had a really cute pink gingham nappy wrap and she was 4 mos old in that astoundingly hot summer and looked v.v. cute in just her nappy! Much cuter than disposables!
Kyte- don't worry about kicks yet. If it makes you feel any better with my 1st i felt nothing till about 22/23 wks.

Cyee · 06/03/2007 08:35

Sorry to hear about your mum's friend twoplusone - I missed that when skimming through yesterday. That's really sad. Both my mum and MIL died young in their 50s an even though all deaths are sad, there's a real reverberation of grief when people feel death has happened too soon (if there is such a concept). Thinking about you all.

Myfairone · 06/03/2007 12:00

Hey everyone!

Well I have finally given in with my regular shoes/boots and been out and bought what have to be 'the most comfortable boots in the world'! OH MY! I feel like I'm walking on air!

Has anyone else noticed that lots of maternity tops have bows? I didnt realise until today when someone commented that I am normally wearing a bow!

I have a couple of shirts that have a silk ribbon that ties just over the bump! I guess its okay to show it off!

Feeling pretty okay today! To make a change!

Hope you are all well and having a good day.

typhoonsmum · 06/03/2007 15:18

Hi. About these dopplers.
I bought one of the Angelsounds ones off Ebay. They are hand held with earphones and a little coloured heart in the middle
I was showing it to my mum just b4 and she pushed the heart in and heard it snap. The point of the heart now dips into the machine.
Since she did that I haven't heard the heartbeat as strong. Is the baby just facing away from the doppler or has my mum done something to it.

I was at my mum's house today and weighed myself on her scales, and was quite surprised to find out I've only put on about 1.5 kilos so far. I knew my bump wasn't that big, but even so ... ! My m/w was a little concerned that I was so slim when she saw me at 16 weeks - oops! Anyone else not put on much weight yet?

Greyclay · 06/03/2007 16:11

Hello all! Nice to read how everyone has been progressing. It is also nice to read the varying experiences that everyone has been having regarding baby movement, bump size, aches & pains etc.

I'm 22+ weeks and have been feeling gentle movements on and off throughout the day but I'm getting to a point where I want to feel things more consistently to be reassured that that everything is ok. Sometimes I feel them very low, and sometimes they are very high which may be the arms and legs flailing around I'm not sure! Also, my bump is still fairly unnoticable....I just look like I have a pot belly. Sigh!

Actually, it seems to be my breasts that have experienced the most dramatic changes much to my dismay. They grew almost immediately and I don't even recognize them as mine anymore! It is hard coming to terms with some of these changes we go through isn't it?

Anyway, that's my own little development update. I wish you all the best as we journey towards July.

Myfairone · 06/03/2007 16:37

Hi all,

Miaou, a friend of mine put very little weight on too. She is now 7 months and her tummy is hardly noticeable. I on the other hand have put on 14lbs and my bump is very noticeable. I was told that it really depends on your body shape and size. My friend was told that she is carrying more in her back and hips. I was told that because I started off so small (with very slim hips) that the baby has nowhere to go but upfront.

I guess it makes sense!

Miaou · 06/03/2007 16:41

It does myfairone, but this is my fourth pregnancy and with previous pgs my weight gain has been "normal" iyswim - hence me being a little surprised about this one! I am naturally quite slim and very small, so I really expected it to "show" a lot more by now. Will see what the m/w says.
