We do reusables. I've got OneLife birth to potty and bamboozle popper size 2s as they can be used from 10lbs folded down. My favourites are the bamboozles.

Oh and it was barf city in my toilet this morning. Thought I was over the ms.

lynnec · 22/02/2007 22:21

Jennster, that was the same as me!!! I have felt terrible all day and night!!! Dh more or less threw me out of our new car when i started wretching, and just as well he did, i was sick as soon as my feet hut the pavement and have felt sick all day and night, i hope the ms hasnt came back with a vengeance!!!!!

abgirl · 23/02/2007 09:02

pulapula, we have a renault scenic that we bought when DS was on the way - quite boring but v easy to drive and lots of room, am definitely of the 'take everything with you' school of going on holiday now, and the car copes very well!

thanks Abgirl - you are a star!
Finally Heard the Heartbeat with midwife yesterday (am 22w) - like a little horse galloping!!

Re Reuseable nappies - can someone explain in SIMPLE english for me if my understanding is ok -

You buy a WRAP (which can have poppers/velcro) this looks like the shape of a disposable nappy. or sometimes does this have nothing and then you do it up with a nappinippi clip thing)

People have said this may last all day with a wipe out if not dirty.

then inside this you put what?
Some people have spoken about buying NAPPIES. (are these the terry toweling ones?)
(or am i getting confused and these are for people not using wraps?)

Now do these go inside the wrap? 'cos then people have spoken about LINERS- do you have these as well?
and then at night people have spoken about BOOSTERS (i think i understand that bit!)

Can someone clarify pls???

Jamantha · 23/02/2007 10:18

as far as I understand - and I'm only pg with 1st so no expert - you use a cloth nappy which is surrounded by a wrap. The nappy can be a flat square thing (like "old fashioned" terry one) or a more modern shaped one. The nappy may have poppers or velcro to do it up or may need pins/nippas (plastic things that you use instead of pins). Not so sure about how the wrapper is fastened - presume it has poppers or something? Again as far as I see, the nappy needs changing more often but as long as it doesn't get too much poo leaked into it the wrap can be used a few times before needing to be changed. Oh and the nappy will probably (certainly?) need a liner to help contain the poo so that it can be flushed away more easily.

Hope that makes some sense and please someone correct me if I'm wrong

Jamantha · 23/02/2007 10:21

oh and I think boosters are extra bits of cloth you can put inside the cloth nappy to add more absorbancy so that it can last better overnight, or if the child produces a lot of wee (probably for older child?)

And yes, hearing the hb is great!

Jamantha · 23/02/2007 10:23

sorry - just remembered this which might help

site which gave useful descriptions of how it all works

abgirl · 23/02/2007 10:37

I used disposables but my sil used reusables, they tend not to be so watertight, particularly overnight, so you may end up with more washing of clothes than if you use disposables - I am thinking of switching to reusables for this baby but will get a bigger size rather than for when the baby is a newborn as their nappies need changing so b**ing often!

Miaou · 23/02/2007 11:11

Hello - everyone wondering about cloth nappies needs to look at \thenappylady.co.uk/\this site} - tells you everything you need to know! Abgirl, I'm surprised at the leaks thing - ds is in washable nappies and I have never, ever had a leak (had plenty with the dds who wore disposables!). Contains explosive poos in a way disposables rarely manage, and they are also great for when they are older and work out how to take a disposable off (not possible with washables and a poppered wrap!).

I think Kyte's approach of buying a few different ones to try is a good one; however when I was expecting ds I knew I wouldn't be capable of making a decision about which ones were best after he was born (sleep deprivation!! ) - so I threw my lot in with totsbots. I got size 2 non-aplix ones (that you fix on with a nappy nippa) - I used them on ds from birth (he was 8lbs) and he is still wearing the same ones now at 18m! I've bought a few size 3's which he wears at night with a booster inside. Total outlay - I would guess less than £150. I also use fleece liners and washable wipes, so no cost there either. It makes a HUGE difference price-wise - I guess I made my money back within three months - plus once I have finished with them they have a good resale value so you get money back!! Also think of the environmental impact - okay, you have the extra washing to take into account, but nappies account for so much of the landfill waste we create each year it's scarey!

OKay, I will shut up for now - as you can tell I'm a washable nappy convert! Any more advice/questions you have, please ask, I can tell you what it's like using them on a daily basis

Miaou · 23/02/2007 11:11

I'll try that link again! the nappy lady

abgirl · 23/02/2007 11:49

Miaou

Thanks for the info - am definitely considering for this baby - I think when DS was so early we just didn't have time to make all the decisions about which to use and he had to have disposables when he was in hospital. He was still only tiny when he came home (less than 5lbs!) so I think we just got into a habit...

Miaou · 23/02/2007 11:57

abgirl - that's understandable!! Don't feel guilty . My SIL was really keen to use washables for her first, but in the end it was just one more "big" thing (in her eyes) to manage, along with b/f, and in the end she decided to just stick with eco-disposables. I had to reassure her that her reputation didn't go down in my eyes as a result

pulapula · 23/02/2007 12:27

Hi Lynnec,

I used a company called body clock for my TENS - www.bodyclock.co.uk - hire starts at £22.95 for 30 days (see link to babycare TENS) but I'm sure I bought an ex-rental for around £30 from them. My midwife gave me the details, so worth asking yours next time you see them. Boots also do TENS rental.

The Mazda 5 looks good on the website- sliding doors are really useful when getting the kids in and out. But all the optional extras means the price could easily mount up. I think we'd have to look at second hand.

Abgirl- the renault scenic looks OK too- I've just done a local dealer search and second hand ones available for a good price, although most seem to be grey which is a bit boring!

pulapula · 23/02/2007 12:28

I hope I haven't offended anyone with a grey car by saying I thought they were a bit boring! the only cars I've had have been white, blue, black and silver, so not the most interesting colour choices either!

22 weeks today!
Think I will pop before 40 weeks, feel huge already!!!

Miaou · 24/02/2007 08:43

Me too auntymandy - my bump was almost non-existant up until a couple of weeks ago, and now it's really noticeable - oh, I'm going to be huge.....

auntymandy · 24/02/2007 08:48

I always get big. And measure big! Once measured 5 weeks over!!!

lynnec · 24/02/2007 13:57

Same here!! The doc said baby was big in the scan
Is it true the second baby is always bigger???
Dh is 6feet 4,so im starting to worry

Miaou · 24/02/2007 13:59

Second is usually bigger I think, though not always. My first was 6lb 13oz; my second (and third) were 8lbs each.

lynnec · 24/02/2007 18:41

Miaou, i have heard that before, my first was 8pounds8, so im hoping the second isnt any bigger!!!
