bumbleclat your union should be able to answer all your questions but as far as I was aware your maternity leave and pay starts from the day you give birth if you haven't already started, you can't delay it.

I was intending to take a year off and work up until the last minute so I got more time the other side but now I've made the decision to return to teaching there's no need as I know I'll start back in September. I've already got half term booked off as holiday so I figured I just wouldn't go back afterwards Grin

Rainfall yes, yes, yes to the cramp! It's horrendous!!!

SteffiMuse · 23/08/2016 23:16

Looking for some advice if possible. With DD who is 9 I had an emergency section and due to complications had an inverted t cut. I saw register last week who said the risk of rupture is too high so have been booked for an elective at 39 weeks but as I'm having twins also isn't this leaving it a little late?

SouthDownsSunshine · 24/08/2016 02:23

I'm not sure Steffi, worth asking for a second opinion. It might be that they've booked you in for then, but they'll whip babies out earlier if needed. I have the impression it's the same for me - I'm booked in at 39 weeks but with regular heart and growth scans so they can identify problems early.

I'm awake with period like back pain. Had it on and off before going to sleep, and now it's back and woken me up. Hoping it's just braxton hicks or wind! Slightly anxious as this is how labour with dd started!

barkingtreefrog · 24/08/2016 04:56

Steffi I think that's just the ideal time they want to wait until, but you'll have scans before then I'm presuming so they can move it forward if necessary?

South I hope you got back to sleep, I seem to have random insomnia, been awake since before 4am and can't get back to sleep. She was kicking earlier, but not enough to keep me awake this long!!! Feeling generally quite uncomfortable.

ElodieS · 24/08/2016 06:42

Morning all! How are you doing this morning south? Hope everything calmed down overnight.

I think it's worth checking steffi, it may have all changed but with DTs I was told I wouldn't be allowed to go over 38 weeks... As it was they came on their own at 37. On the other hand, if you were to start going into labour before 39 I guess they'd just whisk you straight in for EMCS?

Bigfam · 24/08/2016 06:57

How are you feeling now south? Hope everything's ok?

BristolLFR · 24/08/2016 07:51

Ooh, sounds uncomfortable south, hoped it cleared and you got some sleep.

I had the weirdest dream last night. Dreamt we had a baby boy (we're team yellow) but it was a proper meat head and looked like a Mitchell brother, but with a big Donald trump bouffant! We felt like we couldn't give it any of the "refined" names we liked (Elliot, Reuben... DH had already vetoed those names IRL) so eventually settled on Bruce. Baby Bruce Confused

Everyone we showed it to did that quickly recovered shocked look and just said "oh... He's um, nice"

I was glad to wake up!

SolomanDaisy · 24/08/2016 08:19

South I hope it's gone away! Are you going to get it checked out?

My SPD is now definitely here, going to book physio for next week when DS is back at school. I feel quite lucky to have got it this late, after how early I got it last time. I'm also hoping that it will get a bit better after DS is back at school when I'm doing less sitting on the floor and going on day trips!

I have a growth scan tomorrow, I'm getting a bit nervous.

Thisisbonkers · 24/08/2016 09:15

Ooh ooh! I can help on the cramp thing! I googled it as I was waking nightly with it in both calves. It said to stretch them out before bed, so stand opposite a wall, feet flat on the ground then lean towards it.

However, I forget to do that. So if I wake with the start of the twinges, instead of pointing my toes which I really want to do but brings on the cramp instantly, I lift my toes up as far as possible, stretching out my calf muscle. It then goes away Smile Google also suggested trying not to sleep with pointed toes, but I'm not sure how you can manage that once asleep!

Thisisbonkers · 24/08/2016 09:16

Much luck to those having scans and Flowers for the sleep deprived.

Hello all.

Are you feeling okay now South?

My official mat leave doesn't start until 39 weeks but I'm hoping they will let me use my 3 weeks annual leave before that so I can actually go off at 36 weeks. I say hope as all 3 of my regular supervisors are off long-term sick (!) and the acting manager is only prepared to put it down as an annual leave request rather than approve it herself! Annoying as I has provisionally agreed I could do that with my annual leave with my managers before they went off, but they never got around to changing it on the annual leave calendar. I wouldn't have left it so late to start my official maternity leave otherwise. DD1 was born at 39 weeks so midwife has said it's fairly likely this one will be a bit early too, so I don't want to work too late! Work very stressful right now and I can't wait to go. But yes as long as my requests are approved my last working shift will be the 30th of October, so 9 and a half weeks to go!

Minispringroll · 24/08/2016 12:06

bumble I think your mat leave starts the day your baby is born...I also don't think you can delay it much beyond your due date. Which means, if your baby arrives at the beginning of the holidays, you cannot simply say you are using the holidays and then start mat leave after. It doesn't really work that way. However, as I understand it, you also don't have to go back before the summer holidays to get paid. I intend to put the first day of the summer break as my return date and therefore get put back on full pay for the summer holidays.

SouthDownsSunshine · 24/08/2016 12:07

The cramps are coming and going but no worse. I'm guessing I either need a poo, or they're braxton hicks! My midwife is at my gp's surgery this afternoon, so I might give her a call and see if she can squeeze me in.

Popskipiekin · 24/08/2016 12:26

Mat leave starts the day after your baby is born if baby is born before you were scheduled to take mat leave. I booked it to start at 39 weeks last time but DS1 decided to pop out a week before that - the only practical issue (aside from how enormous/exhausted you might feel) I can see with not booking ML until 39/40 weeks is how ready you will be to handover your role if the baby does arrive earlier than scheduled. My replacement had only just arrived at 38 weeks and so I was hurriedly sending emails and having phone calls to hand things over a week early when my waters had gone and I really should have been just focussing on the baby... Starting at 36 weeks this time round in case DS2 has similar ideas Grin

Popskipiekin · 24/08/2016 12:27

Oh South I do hope she can see you today! Can you go along and just wait? So much better to be seen and get some reassurance.

Azure83 · 24/08/2016 12:36

25+2 midwife checkup done! All good, bump size spot on. I'm booked in for my anti-d at the hospital but have to sort out the whooping cough jab with the gp myself. And got to do blood tests ahead of the anti-d. I'm loosing track of all the appointments!

Can anyone feel the position of the baby? I don't have a clue! I don't want to poke my tummy too much but the midwife just touched it gently and said 'he's laying this way'!

On mat leave, I put down the due date (or week due) as the start but have about ten days leave to take before that. As I understand it, if the baby comes early, the mat leave starts from birthday and any unused leave gets 'banked' for later.

goinggrey1978 · 24/08/2016 12:38

As we get paid pro rota, if you don't go back for a week or 2 before the summer holidays you don't get paid I've been told by a very nice ad min lady at my school, so will be talking to her again when I get given my maternity leave form, as contracts run from September to July as far as I'm aware!!

Also anyone looking for silver cross travel systems or other silver cross equipment, I've just been told there's a silver cross fb page which may be worth looking at, it's a closed group so may have to join to see what it's all about!

Minispringroll · 24/08/2016 13:08

going That would be odd, though, since you'd technically be working during that time (but school is closed). When I switched jobs at Easter, my old authority paid up until the end of the Easter holidays and then my new one paid for the days in April afterwards. I would think it's the same principle. I have a friend, who had her baby in September, so took mat leave from the first day of the autumn term until the first day of the summer holidays...and she got paid for the summer holidays on either end. Not sure whether that depends on the council involved but it shouldn't. Hmm Might have to contact them and ask.

BristolLFR · 24/08/2016 15:58

kitkat (as a last resort) surely if you have 3 weeks of leave left 3 weeks before you go on mat leave, they have to let you take it? Otherwise it'll roll over to the following year surely?

In which case you then just start your mat leave when you were going to start the 3 weeks hol, and pin the 3 weeks hol on to the end of your mat leave!

Some people get so funny about leave requests etc, I count my blessings where I work is so flexible!

Nojo82 · 24/08/2016 17:50

The way I'm going today I'll b taking my leave early. Any advice?? Today one of my feet/ankles got really swollen. Was in work so couldn't put my feet up, even had to take my socks off.. got really sore but bearable. Got home and have my feet elevated but have since developeda headache.. well read on the net that if only one foot is swollen then to contact gp. Anyone any experience of this?

Thisisbonkers · 24/08/2016 19:20

I'm possibly being a bit naive, but my maternity leave is starting on my due date (Sunday 4th) and I'm taking two weeks annual leave before hand...

56 days left in work Grin

nightcap · 24/08/2016 19:28

Have just been catching up with the thread, it's been ages and seems like so much has happened for all of you...

Everyone sounds so organised, I've yet to buy a single thing! Luckily we've had loads of friends all emptying their lifts so already have most of the basics covered. The one thing that turned out to be most useful last time was premature baby vests (mothercare ones I think) with Velcro down the sides so you could lie it flat/open, put the baby in one side then just fold the other side over (if that makes sense). Really useful in a poo explosion too. DS wasn't premature (10 days late!) and weighed 6lb 7oz but newborn stuff was huge on him because he was so scrawny.

We've had our scan now and it's another boy!

KitKat1985 · 24/08/2016 19:36

Bristol I could do that technically, but I've already had to send my MATB1 form to HR a few weeks ago, (as they need the dates apparently at least 15 weeks before you intent to start your maternity leave), so my maternity leave date is already sorted so would be a pain to change it now, although obviously I suppose I could if I had to.

SteffiMuse · 24/08/2016 20:09

Oh south you ok?
Hope everything is fine

Time is going so quickly isn't it?
