We live in a Victorian house with single glazed windows, the bambinos need all the insulation they can get!

I bought a pack of two mamas and papas grobags from amazon for £21, although now they've gone up to £28.
But they're really lovely.

Ive got 2. 2.5 tog grow bags but our house is quite warm im actually wondering if I should get a 1.5 in 0-6 month size too for April/may time. We are thinking of a ceiling fan for the summer months as we tried the grow egg and on a day we thought was not that hot it lit up red and said the room was too hot

Minispringroll · 21/08/2016 20:24

There's a pack of 2 grobags at Amazon (for those, who aren't in hiding at present) as well. They are £20 and 2.5 tog, so should be ok for the little winter babies.

I also got these Swaddle Wrap Blankets in case he's too small for the grobag. I'm not sure whether those keep them warm enough, though. Confused There's an awful lot of baby stuff where I'm just a little confused. I don't have any friends with babies...(and not having grown up here means that some of the things I'd consider completely normal - as in, baby sleeps outside in the pram, even in winter - make people look at me like I'm insane).

SolomanDaisy · 21/08/2016 20:42

My DS was big enough to go straight into grobags, but as this one is measuring smaller I was thinking of getting some gro snugs, which can be used from 5 pounds. Our room frequently got 'too hot' in summer (not in UK) and we just didn't use any covers. Sometimes DS just slept in a nappy, when it reached 28 degrees.

Thisisbonkers · 21/08/2016 21:23

Noted about them not getting too hot 👍 Neither DP or I are cold people (we rarely move from a 4.5 tog duvet, even in midwinter!) but 2.5 just didn't sound warm! Probably worth getting the lighter ones too.

I'm glad I have people hear to ask stupid questions so I'm not overloading my bestie 😳 I'm paranoid about being all PFB!

StubbleTurnips · 21/08/2016 21:32

Springroll DD slept a lot outside, I think it was more of a 'thing' in previous generations but not so much now. DD loves being cold (I should imagine they're all different!) and we had her far too warm for months. Now she can tell us it's easier.

There's lots of guides online about how the togs of clothing and grobags stack up - one here from Frimley Park Hospital www.fhft.nhs.uk/media/1381/is-your-baby-too-hot.pdf

Bigfam · 21/08/2016 21:33

Ds has a bloody tooth abscess 😦 his poor little face is swollen, it's from a cracked tooth but the dentist isn't sure yet if he'll need a g.a at hospital to remove it.

Love grobags, when they're tiny newborns they make the strangest grunty noises if they have trapped wind & kick their legs about (I was forever tucking blankets back in!) Grin

Thisisbonkers · 21/08/2016 22:22

That's really useful, thank you stubble

Your poor DS, bigfam 🙁

duxb · 22/08/2016 07:02

Morning ladies - I must admit, the whole blanket / swaddle / grobag thing is stressing me out. I have no idea what to do for the best. I'm concerned about fidgeting and constantly having to tuck in cellular blankets (hubs and I are both wriggles) but my husband is paranoid about grobags too.

Off for my GD screen this morning - thankfully my appointment is 8.40am but I can't imagine I'll be done and back at work until noon. The food isn't bothering me as much as the lack of being able to have some water and the thought of being sat in the waiting room for 2 hours.....

DartmoorDoughnut · 22/08/2016 07:37

Paranoid in what way duxb? The "proper" ones come with a thermometer and a "what to stick baby in" chart on the back.

In any case you don't need to decide now what to use, the beauty of babies is that you'll choose one thing to use and the baby will probably hate it and want the other thing Grin

If it helps I'll probably be swaddling early on to help with the startle reflex, using a blanket or two to keep him warm - as I said up thread our house is cold! About 14 in dead of winter at bed time with heating on.

Mind you he'll probably end up sleeping on me for the first 6 weeks, they don't like being away from you in the early days. Referred to as the forth trimester if you fancy a read!

Very newborn babies will lose heat quickly which is why you need hats for them.

However, it's safer to keep your baby cool than hot. We have a draughty, single glazed, victorian house - we never needed more than a short sleeved vest, long sleeved baby grow and a 2.5tog grow bag. Dd was a January baby as well. The only time we used a 3.5 bag was for camping!

You don't want a grow bag with sleeves, because of SIDS risk. Their arms will be warm enough from the grow bag.

We only had a few vests and grow bags in each size. We don't have a tumble dryer but we do have a heated airer (amazing), so they'd dry in 12 hours. You'll get given lots, and at this stage you don't know if your baby will need tiny, newborn or 0-3 months!

ElodieS · 22/08/2016 08:39

Hi all!

It's very busy over here isn't it? I can barely keep up! Really sorry to hear some of you have been having a rough time, hope things perk up very soon.

I'm back in hospital with DD at the moment and spending way too much time internet shopping... I've gone from having bought almost nothing to being extremely well-equipped for DC3 in about 3 days! Oops.

I completely agree about it being better to err on the side of caution with keeping babies cool rather than them potentially over-heating. DDs were like little furnaces in their sleep, especially after a feed.

Happy Monday... eugh!

SolomanDaisy · 22/08/2016 08:55

duxb are you not allowed to drink water for the glucose tolerance test? That sounds awful! We are allowed to here.

The Dutch seem to have different ideas about keeping babies cool/warm. We're supposed to heat the baby's bed with a special hot water bottle thing before putting them in! There's also no suggestion they should be in the same room as you until six months. DS was born in the UK, so I'm quite interested to see how we get on with the Dutch instructions...

Bigfam · 22/08/2016 08:57

Oh no ElodieS is it the same dt that was in hospital last time? Hope she's better soon.

Ds was woken by his abscess last night and his face is even more swollen, hoping to get an appointment when oh finishes work.
DartmoorDoughnut is startle reflex where they throw their arms out and instantly wake up usually when you put them down after they've been glued to you for 4 hours and you actually contemplate buying adult sized nappies so you don't have to get up to wee and risk waking them Grin

DartmoorDoughnut · 22/08/2016 09:00

That's the one Bigfam Grin fun isn't it!

OP posts:
duxb · 22/08/2016 09:16

I'll have a read up. We have cellular blankets aplenty ( an odd thing people keep seeming to buy us) and MIL has knitted two. I'm thinking I'll buy a thinner swaddle wrap or two, two gro bags (no arms) and see what baby takes too. Bought a snuzpod at the weekend but no sleepyhead equivalent yet - don't want to spend the money until we see how well (or not) baby settles.

I've had my bloods ( three attempts before success, including one in my hand) the orange drink was vile and they gave me a small glass of water to follow. Not allowed any water at all now until after the second bloods at 11am.

ElodieS · 22/08/2016 09:17

No, it's t'other 'un this time Bigfam, she's not doing too badly actually but we wanted to try to nip it in the bud before they start school. Poor chicks. Sad Your poor DS too, hope he feels much better soon! Guessing you've got him on the ibuprofen for the swelling and pain?

Bigfam · 22/08/2016 09:26

duxb slap up meal after you're done there Smile

DartmoorDoughnut yep. You think you've acheived your goal and are half way through a victory sneak to the toilet & out the corner of your eye you see flappy arms Grin

ElodieS oh bless her. Yes we have ibuprofen and are keeping him dosed up, just have to collect some amoxicillin, he can't be seen by our dentist til thursday though & I'm not sure if it's a good idea to leave it that long... Sad

ElodieS · 22/08/2016 10:56

Hmm, it's always hard to say with LOs isn't it? Did your dentist advise it was ok to wait though? If so, I'm sure he'll be fine, albeit uncomfortable! Hope you're bearing up ok in the meantime bigfam!

Lovewatchingrainfall · 22/08/2016 11:07

Why is it people are always late!! The electrician was meant to be here at 11 to fix our shower and he is still not here!! I have not had a shower in 4 weeks and to wash my hair I have had to lean over the bath which not only hurts my back but it squashes my bump. All I want is a shower! But on a plus note my best friend has just sent me an amazing parcel of a few baby clothes, some crisps (current craving) and a few magazines to keep my DD occupied. Sorry about the rant.

Bigfam · 22/08/2016 11:57

Lovewatchingrainfall washing hair over the bath is some form of torture surely?! Grin

I'm starting to feel baby move more now, where you can actually feel their little hands swipe your stomach. So weird 😀

cnchapmanxx · 22/08/2016 12:07

love i dont know how you have coped. i washed my hair over the bath last week as i couldnt be bothered to wash it the night before when i was in the shower and it killed my back and i felt so out of breath. 4 weeks wow you are due a rant! hope you get it fixed soon but good news about the crisps my curr craving is ribena and readybrek haha!

I literally just missed him so much .. i find on breaks and dinners at work i constantly ring him and text.. and when were at home im always cuddling up on the sofa to him and giving him lots of affection! im a very loving person anyway but im extra extra needy/loving at the moment. he doesnt have a problem with it if anything he is the same but dont know whether its hormones?! or im just still totally in love haha! xx

Hannahcarp27 · 22/08/2016 15:35

Chapman your OH is lucky. I'm the opposite mine is annoying the hell out of me and don't really want to cuddle touch or anything. Feel bad for him as he isn't doing anything wrong I'm just being a cow.
