Really pleased you managed to see the gp again bluebell. Sounds like you've got a really good one there who is willing to try all the avenues to help you.

HopesAndDreams15 · 20/07/2016 14:54

Oh Bluebell I'm so sorry to read your post, I can't add anything helpful that the other lovely ladies on this thread haven't already said but I just wanted to send you these Flowers

Pulpi the cramps sound like a good sign, hope things get going for you soon.

Hope those still pregnant are coping with the heat as much as possible and managing to stay cool.

julfin · 20/07/2016 19:07

Hello folks

Sorry I've gone dark for a while. I haven't caught up on the threads yet but will hopefully do so this evening. I hope everyone is doing ok. Have been thinking of you all even though I've fallen behind on what everyone is up to and how you all are. Just wanted to post my birth story, and will catch up on other news later. Also here is a photo of Jasper.

Anna - hope you and your family are doing ok - thinking of you especially.

Hugs to all.

J xx

Birth story - the detailed and painful version 😳

On Wednesday daytime I had occasional abdominal twinges but nothing painful or particularly striking, so I just carried on with my day, pottering about and seeing friends. On Wednesday evening at 11.20 my waters broke as I was getting ready for bed. Again, not very dramatic, and I know sometimes it can take a while for things to really get going, so I decided to try to get some sleep. But pain kicked in pretty soon, and I was pacing up and down, counting contractions. There wasn't much respite between contractions, as I also had a constant (and very strong) period-type pain in my tummy, back and thighs. By about 2am (although I lose track of time after this) I'd woken my husband and phoned the labour ward, and the contractions were roughly every 3 minutes, so we were advised to come to hospital. When we arrived, unfortunately there was no delivery room available, and we were asked to wait in the waiting room. I was in agony by now, on my hands and knees on the floor, with constant abdominal and back pain as well as the contractions. After a while I was examined and was horrified to be told that I was only 2cms dilated and that I had a long way to go yet! They thought the baby might have turned into an awkward position which was causing such pain. I was given some pethidine (which I'd previously thought was the one thing I didn't want, but it was too early for an epidural and frankly I'd have taken anything at this point!) in order that I could get some rest, given how early in the process I appeared to be. I was sent to the antenatal ward, where I asked for gas&air but they only have that in the delivery rooms so I couldn't have any. After a while the pain got even worse (presumably the pethidine had worn off), and it also felt like I simultaneously needed a big poo and had a baby coming out of my vagina 😬. I wanted my epidural. When I mentioned all this to the midwife on a couple of occasions, she said that I couldn't be very far dilated yet because I'd only been 2cms at last check, and she was reluctant to check again yet because there were risks involved, so it was best just to continue waiting. I agreed to this a couple of times, but eventually it got too much, and I was convinced that the baby was arriving and I was ready for the epidural. I sent my husband to get the midwife and insist on this, and when they came back to the ward they could see the baby's head between my legs. I was very quickly rushed to a delivery ward. I was unable to lie on my back due to the pain, so was up on my knees on the upright bed, with my hands and face on the headboard. No time for an epidural, gas&air or paracetamol, and the pethidine was just a distant memory by this stage. It was pretty damn painful, I can tell you - I'd strongly recommend some form of pain relief! At this point they couldn't find the baby's heartbeat - in retrospect probably just because he was in an awkward position rather than that it wasn't beating. I did just 3 pushes and he came out - born just after 9am. I then had an injection for the placenta, and there was time to give me gas&air for this too. The placenta delivery seemed to take quite a while. I also needed stitching for 3 tears (to the front end, rather than the perineum).

Since then, recovering gradually. And Jasper is doing fine, albeit too hot and lazy to eat properly!

July 2016 (10) - the final thread for bumps!
dats · 20/07/2016 19:17

julf THREE PUSHES! Crikey!!! Glad the pushing part was quick after what you'd been through - well done, girl! xx

pulpi · 20/07/2016 20:00

Juflin - Wow. You are a superhero. I am in complete awe (and a little bit of terror!).

birdandbee · 20/07/2016 21:06

Bluebell - You massage from base to nipple (which probably isn't a very good explanation) Google "hand expression technique" and you massage with that motion/ direction. I personally used my knuckles in that motion (as you would give some a deep tissue massage) which hurt but seem to do the trick Smile

julfin · 21/07/2016 00:20

Seems I posted that photo already. Ah well, you get to see him again 😄

Ha ha I laughed heartily at "Dats who are you feeling?" from Elliz and "Bitch" from Anna!

Dats - crikey, two hours! Congratulations!

Cheery - gorgeous boy! Hope you're ok and get out of hospital soon.

Bluebell - congratulations on your little boy, and sorry you've been going through such a traumatic time. Massive hugs to you. Glad you're getting help. I love the name Ruben - it would have been on my list but it doesn't really work with DH's surname. Impressive size for a small bump! My own small bump turned out to be 7lb 4oz.

Dats - I love the Nameless One's little outfit - very cute!

Rolly - love the name Raffy! I wanted a Raphael but DH wouldn't have it.

Beaut - thanks so much for the really helpful BF advice. We are still getting the hang of it here, so those tips are much appreciated.

Congratulations also to Birchy, Mascara and Allthegood.

Sympathies to those who are still pregnant in this heat 💐🍩

Thom - nice to see you back online. For fb you need to befriend Becky Scase.

In other news here:
Jasper: He is very chilled. He sleeps a lot. He's too hot/lazy to feed much, which means he's lost slightly more weight than he should have done, but he seems happy enough so we're just keeping an eye on it. He's developing a lovely little personality and hilarious facial expressions.
Me: I was initially doing very well, getting out and about and feeling fine despite lack of sleep. But yesterday and today I've had a headache that won't go away, and swollen hands, feet and face. We went to hospital yesterday evening because of this and because I had a bit of a meltdown and felt totally overwhelmed. They monitored me for a few hours and found nothing (including pre-eclampsia) - it's probably just sleep deprivation and heat exhaustion. I'm due back for a follow-up tomorroww_. Feeling better this pm/eve, although headache still there.
DH: He has coped much better than I'd feared. He's stepped up and got on with things. He's also been warming to jasper much more than expected - he's really quite affectionate with him, and has acknowledged how cute he is. It's early days yet but things are a lot better than they were during pregnancy. Thank you so much for all your support through the difficult times - it really kept me going.

Day 6

Liz09 · 21/07/2016 03:15

Congrats to all the new mums on their little ones!

Due date here and no sign of anything happening. Plus, I've got a cold so I'm a little bit miffed all over. I suppose, on the upside, my cold may have diminished (or gone completely) by the time I do have the baby and that's more ideal. Hmm

Bluebell20 · 21/07/2016 04:32

Oh good lord Julfin, what a story! I can't believe how often people are doubted by midwives when they say they are ready to push! Glad little Jasper came out safely in the end.

Bird and primary, thanks for the massaging tips. I'll have a go in the shower.

Tams, yep this GP is fabulous - and unfortunately for me, about to go on maternity leave herself! However, she is going to hand me over to another female doctor. Hoping they will be as good.

Woken up tonight by Ruben doing some horrid sounding mucusy breathing. Winded him a load which seemed to help, although hasn't rid him of it entirely. Complex little beasts, babies, aren't they? Got to say, I did enjoy getting a sneaky cuddle in as I winded him. Wink

Lessons we have learned today:

• don't bother changing a nappy if you think he might not be done feeding. He will only fill it again, violently, within a minute of latching back on.

• strip him to feed him, to avoid soaking absolutely every babygro with the milk that drips out before he gets a latch.

tams13 · 21/07/2016 05:53

Quite a birth story there julfin! Only three pushes!?! Glad your dh really seems to have taken to Jasper and fatherhood. Sorry to hear about your headache. Seems like a daft question but are you drinking enough too? You'll need more fluid than usual if you're bf.

bluebell it's a shame this go is off on maternity leave but hopefully she'll get the ball rolling first.

liz sorry to hear about the cold. Fingers crossed it doesn't last too long and disappears before the baby arrives.

Struggling a bit here at the moment. I feel like this baby will never arrive (which would be ok if somebody just told me that because physically I'm fine). There are babies arriving all over the place in my NCT group and while I'm really happy for them that their babies are here, I have a little cry every time. Absolutely no sign of anything happening with mine. I know they're fine but I'm struggling with the waiting. I thought they'd be early but they're now nearly a week late. I've also gone from (by dates) being the third due in the group to now being almost at the back of the queue. I never expected to actually be the third but I don't know how much longer I can keep waiting and watching the babies arrive. Dh is being really good and really supportive but I know it's getting to him now too. I feel it's unfair of me to keep putting this pressure on him.

julfin · 21/07/2016 07:00

Liz - sorry about your cold - hope you feel better soon.

Bluebell - laughing at your changing and feeding tips! I feel that "Lessons of the day" should be a regular feature on the thread. How are you feeling today?

Tams - yes I am drinking absolutely loads. I'm always a big consumer of water, but now even more so. I'm sorry you're struggling with the long wait - it must be very frustrating - but equally when it finally happens I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. What was your due date?

GoingLoopyQuickly · 21/07/2016 07:09

It has takene an hour and a half to catch up on this thread. I haven't even ventired to the post natal one. How many of us arw still waiting? I am only just shy of 39 weeks so not even late yet. Bit ds came at 38+4 so this is the longest I have been pg. It feels different and I have no idea what to expect. Just restinv while ds is in nursery, doing a few cleaning tasks and saving my emergy for non nursery time and labour.

pulpi · 21/07/2016 09:51

GoingLoopy - like you, I'm still waiting for this one to make an appearance. Off to the midwife this morning, so hopefully things get going. No more cramping, but plenty of Braxton Hicks overnight. I've placed my bet that this one shows up on Saturday. Here's hoping neither of us have to wait much longer!

40 weeks today!

tams13 · 21/07/2016 10:24

Thank you julfin. I'm 40+6 today. I shouldn't moan though because I know others have had to wait much longer. Hope your headaches fade soon.

Hope the midwife goes well today pulpi and fingers crossed these braxton hicks become proper contractions soon!

pulpi · 21/07/2016 15:10

Well swept out now. Midwife said I'm 2-3cm dilated, but that my cervix is still 1cm thick. So we're getting there. Feeling crampy since the sweep and definitely feeling a bit tender. Will have another sweep at 41 weeks, if nothing happens in the meantime.

primarynoodle · 21/07/2016 15:58

Ooo pulpi fingers crossed for you!

tams13 · 21/07/2016 16:08

Fingers crossed pulpi.

How long does a sweep take? Got my first one tomorrow at 41+0.

primarynoodle · 21/07/2016 16:42

Tams i had 3 - first 2 did squat all, third one i had after having very mild contractions that morning. Started losing my mucus plug that evening and had dd 48 hours later...

I would say the sweep moved the labour on as the contractions were stalling but dont think they work unless your body is getting ready to go immenently. Midwives have always told me to have sex after it though as that is the ONLY thing that is more likely to make a sweep work (although still not a surity by any means)

pulpi · 21/07/2016 16:56

tams - the sweep took all of 2 minutes. Not the most comfortable procedure, by any means, but so long as you keep relaxed and breathing, it's not too bad.

primary - I think my mucus plug was long gone prior to the sweep, so here's hoping things probably kick off now! The midwife suggested sex and walking, although not both activities at the same time.

dats · 21/07/2016 17:25

pulpi do you want this baby to arrive or not? You have to do them at the same time. Come ON!

pulpi · 21/07/2016 17:45

dats That's that then! I'm away to scandalize the neighbours!!

tams13 · 21/07/2016 18:48

Could be an interesting evening then pulpi. We've just got back from a walk in the park - I don't think the dog walkers would have been too impressed with multi tasking like that. You could always boost it by eating chilli covered pineapple at the same time. Wink

Thanks for the sweep stories. I'm not expecting it to be pleasant but wasn't sure whether it would be a couple of minutes of unpleasantness or ten minutes of it.

dats · 21/07/2016 19:16
Grin

You're just not committed enough tams!!

primarynoodle · 21/07/2016 19:46

A minute at most tams (unless you have a really committed midwife!)

tams13 · 21/07/2016 20:03

I'll clearly have to try harder tomorrow dats. Grin
