I love that we're all in this together. Makes it easier somehow.

CocklesandMussels · 11/08/2016 20:43

Stretched sorry to hear that, but I echo the thoughts above that it's better to know about it than not. Hopefully you'll be able to control it with diet. My sister in law had it with four pregnancies and managed with diet change alone too.
Welcome new people!
I've been buying expensive and cute baby items online today, can't wait for them to arrive. The excitement has suddenly started and I'm in danger of buying a load of stuff that I don't really need. Like these swaddle blankets.

Thanks cockles. I hope so. I think this might push us into having a home birth as we won't be able to go to the midwife unit. But maybe that's for the best.

Nice blankets by the way.

coppergrey · 11/08/2016 22:55

Stretched, really sorry to hear your diagnosis. Hopefully you'll get lots of support to help you deal with it. We're here for you.

user, welcome. We're due date buddies!

CocklesandMussels · 12/08/2016 08:11

Stretched I hope you manage to have a helpful discussion about options when you see the consultant, especially in terms of where to give birth.
It's so hard when your birth plans get turned upside down. I was all for MLU, pool, low lighting last time, had the hypnobirth CDs etc, then DD was breech with the cord around her neck so we had to go for CS, couldn't even risk trying to turn her. I was really upset, but in the end it was a great experience and we got a healthy baby which would have been very unlikely if we'd gone with the original plan. I guess what I'm trying to say is that things often don't go to plan, but as long as the end result is a healthy baby and healthy mum then that's the most important thing. Good luck for the appointment and treatment.

CocklesandMussels · 12/08/2016 08:12

Sorry, I hope that doesn't sound too patronising, my perspective just completely changed after things didn't go to plan for me.

Stretchedfortime · 12/08/2016 10:32

Thanks cockles. Not patronising at all. It is amazing to have support from all of you here. Thank you so much. It really helps.

Fedupithink · 12/08/2016 11:00

I love how supportive everyone is on here, this thread has definitely helped me keep calm so far.

My ankles and feet are still a little swollen today but have definitely gone down from last night. Spending today with my feet up as much as possible.

My mum has the most horrendous varicose veins in her legs and I've always had cold feet so dodgy circulation and I'm really worried I'll end up the same way. Has anyone seen any good preventative measures? The advice seems to be feet up as much as possible, lots of water and don't gain too much weight but there must be something else I can do to help?

Bollyroo · 12/08/2016 11:19

Fedup I'm in the same boat. Actually cold hands and feet were part of my reason to moving to Aus! I'm hoping that wearing these supportive tights everyday might help prevent the dreaded veins but I've not heard anything other than you.

Cockles I really think it's helpful to hear other people's experiences. Keep it coming!

helenatroy · 12/08/2016 11:26

Have had swollen feet legs and back pain. Swear by Epsom salts in the bath. Really helps. Is anyone else experiencing discomfort after even a medium sized meal? Going out for dinner late is a problem me for me too as I find I have terrible heartburn the minute I lie down. Also I go from constipation by day to terrible diarrhoea by night. Sorry if that's TMI.

corinne65 · 12/08/2016 11:45

Having just read my excellent birthing book I'm thinking about having a doula (for a hospital birth). Does anyone have any experience or tips? Apparently some of them do post-natal visits & help with breast-feeding too (well - they help with the theory - you have to do the actual work!!)

RuskBaby · 12/08/2016 13:49

I would say with the doula meet them and see if you gel, I've met 3 through yoga classes and 2 of them I could definitely work with if we had a doula the 3rd I wouldn't. They are going to see you at your best and worst so make sure you and your partner are both happy with her. Also. I would suggest getting afterbirth too as it will be a friendly face to help you with any issues you may face.

Stretchedfortime · 12/08/2016 14:15

Hi

We've got a doula - partly because my husband is disabled so we thought it's good to have another pair of hands at the birth. It was helpful even having her on a birth centre tour - she asked questions I wouldn't have thought of.

Had some good news re gestational diabetes. Apparently I'm only just over the line so I should be able to control it with diet. And we may still be able to use a birth centre - just need to talk through the risks with a midwife supervisor. So fingers crossed. The midwife really was very chilled about the whole thing. Off to stock up on pearl barley.

Hope everyone's enjoying the sunshine.

corinne65 · 12/08/2016 14:42

Thanks for the info on doulas - really helpful.

Good news Stretched - what's with the pearl barley? And what other dietary advice did they give you?

CaptainCabinet · 12/08/2016 16:22

Hi everyone

I've been following the thread for a while. Time for me to join you properly.

I'm due 3rd November. Hoping for an elective c section as had difficult delivery with my first.

We are decorating at the moment. The nursery and the bathroom. It's mostly on track but I have to take regular breaks now.

My hospital bag exists in the form of a list (I searched MN threads on the subject).

I am having v vivid dreams too. Both utterly terrifying nightmares and v steamy adult dreams!

Pleased the news is looking better now, Stretched. I'm getting tested next week as I have a couple of risk factors.

I had terrible reflux for a fortnight in July. I halved my portion sizes at each meal and ate early on an evening. I reduced fat and other trigger foods. After a couple of days the reflux got much much better. It's gone away now and I hope it doesn't come back. My sympathies to those of you who are suffering. It's a misery.

Stretchedfortime · 12/08/2016 16:40

Hello CaptainCabinet. I'm with you on the reflux - horrible.

Corinne - I haven't had any dietary advice yet. That's coming on Monday. But our baby is measuring normal size so that's really good news.

For anyone going for a gtt test, it might be worth considering whether you want to go. I didn't even think about this but it seems these are often seen as v unreliable and you might be able to get an alternative test based on your actual diet rather than a bucket of Iucozade. I wish I'd thought about it a bit more now.

Also worth being sure they've given you the full 2 hours before the 2nd blood test (post lucozade). I'm now convinced that I was tested at least 15 minutes too early. This may be wishful thinking but I wish I'd spoken up at the time.

Good luck everyone

Stretchedfortime · 12/08/2016 16:41

Sorry forgot to say pearl barley is very low gi. So in the absence of proper advice, I am banking on that.

corinne65 · 12/08/2016 16:58

Thanks Stretched - great advice which I will follow!

bobcat85 · 12/08/2016 17:46

Sorry to hear that Stretched and hope you get to have the birth you've planned.
I've got a GD test on Tuesday, my diet has been terrible so I'm dreading it but resigned to the fact that I probably have it.

Spottyladybird · 12/08/2016 19:53

Bought a hospital bag so feeling a tiny bit organised. Great discounts in Debenhams and got a Tripp bag for £14!

peaspuddin · 12/08/2016 22:46

Good evening all, I am 24 weeks due 27 Nov. Don't have many pregnant friends that aren't months ahead of me so thought I would try on here! All going well so far. Move next week so a little stressed but can't wait to get the nursery done!

We don't have any funded antenatal classes in my area so I am looking for ideas of good course or if it's worth doing them?? This is our first but I have a lot of mums around (although that's sometimes too much opinion).

Anyway hope you don't mind me joining, look forward to hearing from you.

latinata · 12/08/2016 23:11

Hi all. Stretched I agree with your glucose test advice- I nearly fainted after an hour and a half and the nurse asked whether I just wanted to have the second blood teat there and then. Telling her I wanted 30 more minutes was hard!!

Away with DH for a long weekend as we have a bank holiday on Monday. Just had my second 36 degree hot tub (the hotel have cooled it down specially!) and figure that I won't be pickling my wee one that way as it's lower than body temp! Not quite as good as a 39 degree-er but still lovely!

I've been using my Babymel changing bag as a beachy handbag this weekend and already love how voluminous it is. Heartily recommend! Although left the changing mat and bottle pouch at home not to be a weirdo!!!

Would anyone who got a positive answer from amazon on the sleepyhead mind letting me know their order number? I had a garbled reply saying 'yes you ordered the pod but we'll send you the case'!! Would like to argue!

Have a lovely weekend, all!

latinata · 12/08/2016 23:12

*blood test!! Blush Although sounds as though bloody teats might not be too distant a prospect for us all....

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 12/08/2016 23:59

Hello peas! Congratulations, do you know what you're having?

I've been told I need to book in a glucose test too stretched so thank you for your advice.

Fedupithink · 13/08/2016 09:08

Hello to all the newbies! Hope you are all well!

My ankles and feet have totally returned to normal now after lots of time with my feet up but the heartburn was back with vengeance last night after a late dinner. Seems to be one thing then another for me but trying not to complain, I know I'm so lucky in the grand scheme of things and I am having a low risk and relatively easy pregnancy. Long may it continue!
