Good question EmmyMummy, I've always pronounced it SA-RAI (like Sara with an I at the end of it). Just googled the pronounciation of sarai and some man is pronouncing it SAY-RAI
Another person pronounces it suh-rye-uh????????????Go figure.

I must say all your experiences are really helping a first timer like me, I never realised breast feeding could be such an issue but now that i realise it could be I'm not going to beat myself up over it if it doesn't happen or if I don't like it. I too have big nipples (sorry) and thought all the better to feed the LO with..how wrong was I. AngeG\Maveta what's the name of the book please?

AngeG · 23/01/2007 21:50

I'm here EllieK

AngeG · 23/01/2007 21:53

Yvie - book is called. What to expect when you're breastfeeding and what if you can't by Clare Byam-Cook. It really is helpful.

12weeksandcounting · 23/01/2007 21:53

Re Holby City - no didn't hear it anywhere - just thought she was good at sticking her tummy out if she wasn't!

Baby in armed combat with bladder - must goo before pee myself

12weeksandcounting · 23/01/2007 21:54

go not goo or poo!

AngeG · 23/01/2007 21:55

12wks - psml at your goo/poo/wee. Did read it wrong to start with. You're right it did look quite real.

12weeksandcounting · 23/01/2007 21:56

and as a final question - way tmi - how do you know you have big nipples? Off to measure mine - will report back tomorrow!

AngeG · 23/01/2007 21:56

Isabelly good to see you. I think if I'd missed that much on these threads I'd give up and start again. In fact I have done that a couple of times

AngeG · 23/01/2007 21:57

Fair point 12 wks. Will compare sizes tomorrow

YvieE · 23/01/2007 22:02

Like the following names you mentioned

Asher - because it's a nice unique name
Noah - actually suggested to DP No'a female version but he didn't like the apostrophe
Phoebe - so cute, family friend just had a baby and named her this
Charlie - modern but traditional as well
Aaron - cousin also loves this name has a great meaning
Isobelle - beautiful name (like your spelling)

Okay baby is kicking obviously wants some more Jelly and Ice Cream

YvieE · 23/01/2007 22:03

Thanks AngeG

MIABT - Did you find out anything more about the prem twins?

EllieK · 23/01/2007 22:49

i haven't caught up on the thread yet but spotted the nipples conversation! on phone to dp (he asked if he qualified for dp status yet?!) and he says to tell you all that mine are just fab men!

EllieK · 24/01/2007 00:08

ok, just caught up!

maveta re bottles, if you're short on funds then don't go for avent bottles!!!! I refuse to use them as they are SO overpriced, i used a couple of them and found them no better, if not worse, than the much cheaper tommee tippee or even Tesco own!

On the subject of combined feeding, try not to think about it too much as this tends to just add problems, Matthew was 9lb 3 at birth {i'm only 5'4" and a size 10!) and by 6 weeks I was strugling to breastfeed without having the dining table to lay him on, even had to have physio on my shoulders after 3 months, so switched to bf combined with expressing and ready mixed formula. didn't really think about it, just did it, and had no problems with him not bf after bottles or the other way round. he was also quite happy to take some feeds formula and some bf, that way i kept going til after 3 months with him still primarily bf.
sorry to go on but i feel that the professionals try to discourage anything that isn't bf, when in reality you have to go with whatever works for you and your baby. and at only 21 last time round i had a real battle on my hands getting them to listen to me!

Matthew was diagnosed with reflux, and he had very bad colic, but at 6 months I discovered it had been a milk/lactose intolerance all along . they never did work out exactly what part of cows milk caused the problem but he's gradually growing out of it. now at a point where he can have everything but milk, he has yoghurts and cheese but not custard or drinks of milk. just have to hope this one doesn't have it!

as for names, i really like Joe, tho I am a firm believer that you can't make a decision until you see your baby, the name should suit them IYKWIM. Ds is (ready for this?!) Matthew Philip James Kirkby-Catterwell. .
Philip is a family name on my side, James on his dad's. we didn't like either as a first name so he got 2 middle names instead. he has both surnames as I wanted him to be able to use his dad's name as soon as he was old enough to understand it wasn't mummys name too.(we had just seperated when we found out i was pg). If you ask him his name now he'll tell you it's Matthew James Catterwell daddys influence perhaps?!
With this one I will prob just use my surname, as it will be different from Matthew whatever (something I am really finding difficult to deal with).
So if I go with Joe it'll be Joe .... Kirkby, every middle name I can think of sounds wrong with Joe, tho ok with Joseph, but I don't want to use the full version!

mammoth posting over now

good mornig folks! hello and hope you are all well.... had strange dreams that BIL locked me up for being pregnant and wouldnt let me out / anyone see me in a flat full over spilled cans of paint. hmmmmmmmmm

off to antenatal appt - 2weekly is a chore. forgot i needed to pee in a bottle -struggling now! might be gtting a scan as LO isnt too active. will see when i get there. 28weeks today!

have a good one to the rest of you - nearly half way through the week.

muminabigtumi · 24/01/2007 08:52

Hieveryone

Oh BUM! I forgot to wish you luck 12 weeks yesterday.....so a belated "good luck" forthe GTT this morning. I have mine on Monday morning....itis the only antenatal appt I am getting time off for as so far they have been wither when I am in surgery at work and I've just scurried in to the midwife or on my day off up at the hospital! So I am actually looking forward to sitting about with my feet up and a good book....will be taking sarnies with me tho for when I can eat....I remember last time I was bored and for me...when bored all I want to do is eat.

Hi YvieE - sorry to hear you won't make the funeral thats a real shame hun, I have not heard any more about the twins as yesterday was my day off but Iwill see if there is any more news when I am in work this afternoon - thank you for thinking of them.

Well...shock horror - James slept thru till 6.15 - !

Totally agree with the Mixed feeding/breastfeeding discussion...last time round was hell for me - So much pressure to breastfeed and not enough information about mixed feeding. I was under the impression that BF was an all or nothing thing and if I had been informed otherwise then I think I could have carried on with mixed feeding ....never mind....I am glad you first time mummies will have this knowledge and I fuly intend to give BF a go and not stress if it doesn't work...I've got bottles and a steriliser in case....never managed to express last time - apart from about 5ml in the scbu!!! (with an electric medela breast pump) When I got home I just couldn't work my breast pump.... (an avent hand held one by the way...)
Also recommend the "What to expect when breastfeeding and what if you can't book" - it is really good.

Re nipples - apparently size does not matter....however my boobs are rather big and I found that I was nearly smothering James at times and had to keep poking them in to make sure he could breathe....think it was probably a problem with me not positioning him correctly but I was worried sick he was going to end up choking.... Managed to sort it by getting one of those V Cushions which he lay on and was higher up and that helped - also was good for my C Sec scar as he was lying on the cushion rather than me....
Oh it's all coming back to me now....lol

I agree the Avent bottles are quite expensive...just plumped with what I know and got n with last itme (apart from the strange whistling noise the Avent ones can make!) I found that the Tesco ones last time were ok but the teats collapsed in easily and James couldn't suck on them very well....just suppose every baby is different and will ..just like us Mums prefer a particular type. Maybe just buy one or two initially and see which one you and baby gets on with before buying more...also a good point from you 12 weeks about the nappies...
I may just buy a few and see how I get on, I think I am most worried about spending £200 quid and then them sitting in the cupboard cos I can't be arsed to use them...and Phil would REALLY not be happy about that!!!!

muminabigtumi · 24/01/2007 08:55

Weeonion

Hope your antenatal appt goes well....I hate peeing in bottles!
x

geordiemacminx · 24/01/2007 09:22

Morning ladies!!! Good luck to all those with appointments today!! I only get to see midwife every 4 weeks.. which is good in some ways I suppose..

Re breast feeding.. will buy that book too, am hoping to breast feed for a good wee while, had thought about buying stuff just incase but have figured that the shops WILL be open when he arrives, and if I cant manage to get there then there are plenty people that will, so not going to bother stock piling bottles and sterilisers and such like just yet!! Have had quite a few recommendations for the tomee tipee close to nature range though!! My nipples are getting pretty huge too.. although I suppose its all relative to the size of your boobs

Cant remember who it was I was talking to about the travel cot.. it arrived this morning... very impressed!! It is the size of a dinner plate.. unzip it and it literally pops out and up.. its fantastic!! Even better was watching dp tyring to "pop" it back in!!!

Thanks to everyone for all your kind messages yesterday, they truely made me feel so much better!!

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 24/01/2007 09:30

Morning all. Good luck with your appt. Weeonion.

MIABT, I don't know how you cope with Jaes being such an early riser. Becky nomally gets up at 7.00 ish but this a.m. she woke up at 6.00 and I am knackered. It makes for such a long day as well don't you find?

How is his cold? B is not too bad today, and no broken night last night which was good, although I woke up for the required loo trip!

Has anyone heard from Pesha?

12weeksandcounting · 24/01/2007 09:47

Morning folks - have been for first bit of test and have to go back for 11.15 for next blood test - also got her to do chickenpox while she was at it - says very likely to come back immune as have already had it.

Lots of my friends in the village are also pregnant - so get to have alittle catch up while there! Funny to think we'll all have little ones again.

GMM - glad you're pleased about the travel cot - my appointments are every 4 weeks aswell until 32 weeks then fortnightly I think.

WO - I am due on the 15th.

4.5cm diameter

Thinking about food constantly.... and would kill for a cup of tea!

Pesha · 24/01/2007 09:54

Caught up last night but took so long I didnt post and hadnt made notes so apologies to anyone i forget.

Re bottles - I found avent best and well worth the extra money as all the others used to collapse in and it drove me mad! Tried tomme tippee with the bobbly teats that are supposed to be like nipples but wasn't very impressed. With dd i used to give occassional top up bottles, i think advice is that babies dont need top ups if you feed properly your supply increases blah blah blah but you can see on dds growth charts when i gave bottles and when i didnt! She took about 4 weeks i think to regain her birth weight and i just never had much milk. Didnt do it as regular thing though and she was fine. Also with ds as me and dp weren't living together and were very on and off if he had him at his house he used to give him bottles of formula and had his first at about 2 weeks but i still bf til 8.5 months and i never gave him bottles myself and he was fine too, no confusion. Oh and i also have big nipples and was just last night saying to dp look at that, hows he supposed to get that in his mouth!! Last 2 had no probs tho so not really worried, and babies have specially designed little noses so they can breathe out the side and not be smothered And def recommend feeding babies on cushions on your lap, if you get it right you can then feed hands free!

Said to dp the other night about everyone getting pressies after birth. He said 'Well you aint getting fuck all, Ive done my bit' Dont think he was entirely serious but realistically if he's moving in we wont be able to afford anything anyway.

Scan was all fine cyst has gone as far as they can tell which i think is just them covering their arses! I really hadnt realised how much this was affecting me until we left the hospital and i was all excited 'our babies got feet!' i said to dp, 'little feet, 2 of them, up here' 'and a nose, did you see his little nose!!' Its like finding out im pg all over again. Oh and its still a boy!! However i was 28+1 yesterday, his head is measuring 30 weeks Dd and ds had big heads and they came out ok but still! And he's still breech and back to back. Think i need to do a search on things i can do to encourage him to move, I know it doesnt matter til 36 weeks but thats only 8 weeks away so think ill start trying to encourage it sooner rather than later while he's not too huge!

Bramshott · 24/01/2007 10:02

Great news about the scan Pesha - that must have set your mind at rest!

Right, am going to try and stay off here today as I'd really like to finish work by 3.00 so I can pick DD up early and take her over to tea with my friend who is visiting from Singapore. Let's see how I do!!

Bramshott · 24/01/2007 10:04

Oh, and I made another fruit cake last night, and burned that too!! Only a little bit round the edges though, and I am eating it anyway! I can tell that by 40 wks I am going to have to start setting and alarm clock and carrying it round with me if I've put anything in the oven!

Pesha · 24/01/2007 10:05

Oh dear im crap arent i?!

Hope your not feeling too bad with gtt bbck.

Hope mw appt goes ok WO.

And doesn't liath have a scan today?

Glad your feeling bit better today gmm, I was bit like that at weekend, spent alot of time crying!

Hope all poorly people and LOs are feeling better today. DP has a cold and cough so thinks he is dying! Im a bit coldy but not too bad. Is horrid on top of being pg tho isnt it.

Meant to ask about mw appts, havent seen mine since start dec as been to hospital to see consultant but now cant remember how often im supposed to go. I have another appointment with consultant at 34 weeks (am 28wks) but dunno if i should see mw before then or not, what ya think?

charNbump · 24/01/2007 10:23

weeonion - 28 weeks today too! wohoo! not long now x

CaptainDippy · 24/01/2007 10:36

Morning Lovely Ladies! How are we all? I am still feeling low and getting silly and panic-y about pointless stuff - Have spoken to my MW and GP and both were v.unhelpful and couldn't suggest anything at all to help my mood; so just struggling on ... for now. Anyway, as I am feeling like this and DD1's Pre-School is still bloomin' shut (), DH has taken the morning off, so he can take her swimming and generally entertain her - Bless him!! So he is off with her and DD2 is down for a sleep (hoping she stays there longer than yesterday - she is very restless and unpredictable atm, which I am finding v.hard - one min she'll be happy and smiley and fine and the next, screaming on the floor inconsolably!!!!)

Sorry for the slight rant there.....

AngeG - My DD1 is going to be 3 at the end of Feb - and already wanting a man for her Birthday!! Good grief!!

Yvie - Didn't realise your Grandpa lived in Ghana - So sorry you won't be able to travel out for the funeral; but like someone else said - I am sure he would have totally understood about Bubba etc. It is sad, but it isn't your fault you can't go out there. You have your own precious memories etc to keep you going - Perhaps schedule a time to go out alone and say "goodbye" in your own way - Be it going into to a church or just going for a long walk. [hugs]

Glad the scan was ok Pesha - Good stuff! If Liath does have another scan today, I hope it goes well. I've no more scans to look forward to (unless something happens, which I hope it doesn't!); but lots of lovely tests like a HVS at 28 weeks cos of DD2 being a bit early - Joy!!
